Question about exfat in AOSP roms - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I have been using C-rom for N7100 and it worked fine for about a week. My sdcard that is formated as exfat was recognized right away using the included kernel.
Suddenly it stopped recognizing the sd card. I thought maybe the SD card broke, but it was recognized in recovery and all my files were there.
I read that maybe changing the kernel, and tried with AGNI kernel, which it says it support exfat, but it didnt work.
Then read somewhere that the C-Rom was outdated and it was fixed on newer roms, and tried to install a paranoid android 4.45 rom (fresh install), but the sd card didnt appear again. I thought all newer AOSP roms have exfat support.
For last I restored a touchwiz rom I had before changing to c-rom and the sd card work without issues.
My question is, why the sd card suddenly stopped working in AOSP and why i couldn't fix it re-installing kernels or roms? and how can I fix it, if it happens again?
Thanks in advance

[Q] FrostyJB ROM V11.2.2, cannot access 64GB SD

Hi, I just flashed my Galaxy S3 with FrostyJB ROM v11.2.2. After the flash, SD card cannot be mounted anymore. I have a 64GB SD card in there. I then flash the kernel with stock kernel, and SD card can be mounted again.
Since this ROM is built using a custom kernel, I'm assuming the optimization is build around that kernel. So is it better to revert back to a previous version of the ROM altogether, or format the SD card with FAT32 and see if it works with the custom kernel, or it doesn't really matter having the stock kernel with this particular ROM?
Thank you for your help.

Mine is working... I suggest re-formatting your SD card from within Frosty.

Thanks tvinhas, but that's not the issue.
I played around more on it yesterday, and here's what I have:
FrostyJB v11.2.2 uses ktoonsez kernel, which seemed to incompatible with exFAT greater than 32GB (or perhaps just incompatible with exFAT altogether, not sure). I tried different combination and this works:
* FrostyJB ROM V11.2.2, with stock kernel
* FrostyJB ROM V11.2.2 with ktoonsez kernel, but must format SD card with FAT32
But regardless, I found another issue with this ROM version, so I decided to revert back to V11.2.1. I found that this ROM for some reason broke my USB connection. ADB and KIES won't work anymore, though windows recognizes the phone when I plugged it in and was able to read the storage. I uses KIES to sync my calendar with outlook, and I disable my KIES air. Rather than mocking around with it more, I decided to restore my nandroid.
Thanks for the help
Frosty V11.2.1 is my favorite and most stable ROM to date. I had issues with my 8gb FAT32 SD card on V11.2.2 so I went back. I was having some other issues as well but they might not have been due to the new version. I can't express enough how much I appreciate you developers taking the time to do this for the community.

Totally agree, this is my favorite ROM, and it is amazing. Can't thank all the people enough in spending time developing and debugging this.

[Q] My GS3 i747 ATT no longer reads my 64gb sd card. help please.

Ive been using my gs3 for some time now, rooted and working great. i updated my clockwork and flashed a few new roms along with new kernels. My problem is now i can not get my phone to mount my 64 Lexmark micro sd. it was fatx then moved it to fat32 but when its fat32 my phone says its damaged and ask to format, so i format then after that it can not mount it. it works fine on my older android phones but they are not rooted. so i suspect Clockwork recovery. im at 6.0.2.3 tried both touch and non touch. no luck. tried many different roms along with stock and stock kernel. no luck. any help? or link to older clockwork recovery that work?
thank you also running 4.1.1 jedi outcast rom right now
Did you try formatting it back to exFAT? Mine is formatted FAT32 and reads fine. Does the card read when you put it in a computer?
Yes I tried to format it in my pc to both fat32 and fatx. Also reads fine on my pc.

MicroSD Not Mounting

Hello all,
I've searched d2tmo forums and couldn't find an answer for this so decided to start this thread. Ever since updating to Kitkat my d2tmo no longer recognizes my 32gb sd card. It reads fine on the latest 4.3 OTA firmware and my computer can also read it. I'm currently running CM11 nightlies. I have a smaller 8gb card in FAT32 that CM11 is able to read though, but somehow it doesn't recognize the 32gb card. Here's what I've tried so far,
- Formated to FAT32, to ext4 and ext2
- Tried to mount from CWR and TWR
- Used Remo recover and other file recovery software to format my 32gb card.
Please let me know if you have any fixes for this issues.
Thanks,
First format it back to FAT32 on PC. Then please flash another kernel and then try to format the card inside the phone.
Thanks Perseus
MicroSD is already in FAT32. Interesting that this could be a kernel issue. I'm currently running CM11's latest 3.4.74.
Will look for CM11 compatible kernels and let you know how it goes.
Thanks again

Hi Perseus,
I've flashed KToosez's AOSP 4.4.x kernel found here and CM11 is still not recognizing my 32gb SD card. SD card is FAT32. I have also tried to mount it from recovery.
Any other insights?
Thanks,
André
This may seem strange. But try to flash a 4.3 AOSP Rom or better yet 4.2 AOSP Rom with built in Kernel. See what happens in that case ?
NOTE - Since you have got the latest Samsung's 4.3 OTA Bootloader, be careful and Weary when flashing Roms. You don't want to accidentally try to flash an older bootloader.

Thanks Perseus,
I'm going to try formatting it to extFAT and use dkp's kernel to see if it will recognize the card. I see dkp can recognize 64gb sd cards. Let's see how it goes. I just came from 4.3 AOSP and TW and want to enjoy using Kitkat for a bit longer.
Appreciate the insights.
I had remembered seeing somebody having the same problem in the aospa thread. Apparently they erased the card and remounted. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=48901946. You could try messaging the post author for details

Recommend kernal for my AOSP rom I am using? (exfat support)

I just went from 4.1.2 to 4.4.4 Dirty Unicorns Rom using Philz recovery. Everything seemed working fine, no gps locking problems, but it will not recognized my 64 gb exfat formatted sd card.
Can someone recommend me a kernel I can flash? Or at least another TW based Rom? It's my understanding that they have native exfat support.

trouble mounting sd card on cm roms

i am using m8(int version) with sense based different roms nicely with s-on.
