[Q] Xperia ZL post-mortem - Sony Xperia ZL

I have a couple of quick questions about the xperia UI.
Recently, my ZL died in an accident. Due to my location, I had few replacement choices available, so I opted for a Galaxy S4. It wasn't my first choice, but it's not a bad phone.
There are a few things I miss.
First, what is that thing circled in red on the first picture called? It's a launcher of small apps that appears on the bottom panel when you open Recent Apps. Samsung doesn't have it, so I'm assuming it's an Xperia thing. I want to search for an app or a mod that can perform a similar function, but I don't know what it's called, or if there's an app that does it.
Secondly, I was really getting to like the Xperia's "Album" software. I've found gallery apps that organize in a similar way, but don't include a home screen widget that allows the user to flip through photos. Can this "Album" app be installed on the S4, if so,how, and if not, can anyone recommend a good replacement?

I don't think thats possible on a sammy phone... not unless you port the stock xperia rom to the S4... But you should head over to the s4 forum and maybe ask someone to port it for you.... only the small apps if possible! Also Samsung has their multiwindow and all... maybe use that!
You could also root your phone and use floating window from xposed!

Well, my sister have a s4, and somehow i didn't like it...
And samsung doesn't have a small apps, and also , you can tweak your Xperia ZL using Xposed Modules (Need root but not custom rom)...
Like mine, you can customize the status bar icon, battery icon, nav bar, screen off animation, and many more!
Feel free to ask, bbm or pm me if you have a question

You can tweek any phone with Xposed, but why are you telling him that? didn't you read his post? He states that his ZL died and the S4 is a replacement, he's asking if it's possible to make his S4 to be closer to the ZL.
Now to the topic at hand, from what I heard it's a popular practice to port Sony apps to all Xperia phones as well as other phones. So if you go to the S4 forums you should be able to find the small apps as well as the album app, along with instructions on how to install them correctly. Good luck man, and don't be sad, the S4 is a bit better than the ZL anyway.

I found a bundle of Xperia apps and flashed them, and I discovered the apps couldn't start without Xperia Home enabled and running. Needless to say, it didn't run well competing with Samsung's Touchwiz. Touchwiz can't be stopped or shut down. Most of the Xperia stuff didn't last a reboot. I couldn't get Walkman to run at all.
S4 may be a slightly better platform. It's got a better camera, for one. However, the better user experience goes to Xperia. Walkman's a better music app in every way that's important. Small apps are useful, especially screenshot for me. Album widget is irreplaceable. Now I've got 2 competing music apps, Adapt sound which breaks everything, 2 competing alarm clocks, and of course the one I don't want is the one I can't stop...
It was easy to root, though, to its credit.
Might just get a Z2 and give this one to my wife. Are those easy to root? Z2's, I mean?

Oh, that's a shame and kinda weird. I mean porting should imply that they have been modified to actually run on the device.
The Z2 is easy to root with towelroot or the Z2 root deamon we also used to root our ZL. Then again, everything is easy to root with towelroot.
The best music app is PowerAmp, Walkman kinda sucks when compared to that.
Here are the S4 forums, pick which model you have and see if they have properly ported Xperia apps.

Xperia S Disappointed me.

Hi guys
I was used a galaxy s plus with no comparable specification of Sony Xperia S, but unfortunately I found many problems when I used Sony Xperia S that doesn't appear to me in Galaxy S plus that has poor specifications.
For Example :
1 My Sony Xperia S always refreshing when I enter to Album
2 . The Keyboard Suddenly hidden and I can''t control it (when i typing hidden and appear)
3 . Font type can't change
4. My Xperia stop working one time for more than 7 Minutes and I can't do any thing !!!!
5. the signal of WiFi is poor and i try another device and the signal excellent
6. when I received What's app message during listen to music, the Sony will hung for a moment.
I am really sad when I choose Xperia S when I see these problems
because my friends don't have these problems and some people advice me to upgrade the system to jelly bean and current version of the system is 4.0.4
Please if anybody has similar problems tell me , I want to give a complaint to the company !!!
5, the wifi signal is fine, just because the phone shows it is low it doesn't mean it actually is, use WIFI Anaylzer to see the actual strength. Despite the signal shown as non existent i can connect to my router 60 yards away when stood at the bus stop.
6, Call me stupid but wont all phones pause the music briefly when you receive a message so you can hear the message tone?
Sounds like it could maybe be RAM related... Just another possibility

I will not call you stupid but my phone is different from other Xperia S so sometimes I feel my phone has a problem in a software
About of All I want now change phone's font but no option to change it directly how can use easy way to change it. I heard about doing something in the root to be able to change font type and I don't have enough experience at this field.
if you have any URL for Explanation of Font changing please post it here

The font change thing is a thing Samsung included. I think their idea was great, considering how much that stock font suck. For us, go to Xperia P, U, Sola section, Themes and Apps, and search for Font Changer Script.
i dont have any of yours problems ... sorry but i dont know why you have ...
only issue is battery drain, everyday charging makes me angry... but its very good phone, smoth and powerfull..
I have the same problem with whatsapp music stutters when message arives really disappointed and phone lags alot

My Xperia S with ICS (.55 custom firmware) is perfect. Even when I was on stock there was no lag and everythings worked well.
dear friend if u know how to root ur Xperia S i have simple way for u just find a same Xperia S with
difrent build.pro after rooting ur phone use root explorer & copy past to system make rw,r,r permision
and reboot ur phone & update with Sony Update or do repair with PC Companion everything will be just great
i did the same my phone is wonderful
Really? I have no problems with it at all. Relating to speed, I can even say my S has a quite faster UI than a Galaxy S3 TouchWiz on 4.0.4 (S3 on jellybean is faster, though).
I must admit that with a stock rom I was also disappointed about the overall performance of this smartphone. Its hardware should be more than sufficient to work smoothly with ICS and it doesn't. It lags switching between desktops, in drawing recent tasks list, resuming apps and so on but with a custom rom (my BL is locked, so all of them come from stock) it works great.
It is still a disappointment because although I like to tests roms, they use to have several bugs so you have to flash again and again, wipe, backup, restore. It can be a pain in the neck.
In general, I love this phone, its design, its screen but its software and Sony's updates suport is disgusting.
Just change to other custom rom like XTX V9 or other base .55, you will free with all problem
AW: Xperia S Disappointed me.
I'm on Stock 45 and have none of your Problems. Everything is just fine. Reflash your rom and if that doesn't help update to another Rom.
Changing your Font is really easy, just use FontChanger! (PlayStore, root)

I am really satisfied with the camera, although a fix on XDA helped to make it focus faster. If you check the thread in this forum where people show their photos, you will see that it can take good photos (at least for a smartphone).
I wasn't thrilled with the stock ICS ROM, so I moved to a custom JB one. That was an improvement; no lags!
Back on the days when I was using stock rom I felt like this phone wasn't that great, I mean I felt it laggy, unresponsive and all that stuffs. However after many roms changes, I found XTx v9, and It's great very smooth. I do really love my phone in this way.
I am happy with my Xperia S from March 2012
It just run a little bit lag after I almost used up the phone memories with many folders on my Home screen.
I just exchange my yellow tint display from sony and reinstall a new custom rom
everything runs fine and fast

Request touchwiz ux for the HTC one

why not just buy an S4 instead of a One

Ok, here it goes again, without the use of the F word.
Why would you want touchwiz on our phones?
Samsung literally tried their best to copy Apple, while failing miserably. Instead of clean and sophisticated (for 2007 standards, people) Touchwiz looked like it was designed by children for use by children. 5th grade classrooms want their ugly pastel colors back!
And now Apple has changed their design, to only leave Samsung and their steaming pile of Touchwized crap to wallow in their own poor, copied design.
I BET Samsung will change the next iteration of touchwiz.
It's unfortunate when others can't recognize poor design when it's being sold to them for 200-600 dollars.
I mean, I have no problem with variety and choices but I'm confident nobody is going to want to port TW to the One.
It's just so.....childish looking.
I do not hate Samsung at all, I actually used the S3 for quite a while and I liked it; however from my experience, TouchWiz is extremely slow and laggy.. I mean even the S4 with all its hardware capabilities still has A LOT of lagging issues because of TouchWiz. I'd rather an AOKP ROM with Samsung that one with TouchWiz, especially since all the Motion features and Samsung applications are just useless, practically speaking.

eurghhhhh! touchwiz is just ugly. I used to have the s3, couldn't stand touchwiz and so ran aokp on it. I really like the look of stock android but i have to say that i think sense 5 is nicer. Yes nicer than stock android. I think that sense 5 is the first custom skin that has ever looked nicer and ran just as well as stock. Why you would ever want to change that for touchwiz i will never know.

My hate to touchwiz was one of the main reason to quit Samsung and return to HTC.
Variety is good off course. But it will be waste of time for a developer because there will be a little to no interest on it.
Hello, noob here, please don't crucify me. I used to have a GS3 and while my HTC one M7 is a much more solid, faster and sexier phone there are some features that I REALLLYYY miss. First is the pull down menu from the home screen with all the GPS, bluetooth, wifi controls etc. Second, swiping left to call and right to text from contacts was great... really nice feature. Third, editing contact info or adding a new contact, or even going into the phone icon and trying to find a phone number is ponderous on this OS. Can someone recommend another OS or solution? I wasn't sure where else to post this or how to search for all these criteria, so I thought this thread was the best bet. Thanks for your time!

Custom Sense ROMs such as TrickDroid have the pull down menu with the horizontal row of scrollable buttons for WiFi, bluetooth, etc (it's called EQS - extended quick settings). Also, all 4.2.2 based ROMS (custom as well as stock) have the native EQS as well (you swipe down from the status bar with 2 fingers). I'm pretty sure there are 3rd party SMS/texting apps that will let you do the swipe thing. There are definitely 3rd party phone/dialer apps that handle contacts better, I suggest trying exDialer. It installs 2 icons, one called Dialer and one called Contacts. If you don't like how the program looks, there are plenty of themes for it. Always remember the good thing about Android is you're not forced to stick with default apps for almost everything. You can potentially replace all the default apps if you so choose: mail, calendar, dialer, contacts, camera, gallery, messaging, web browser, clock, calculator, etc.
Edit: there are also apps in the Play Store like "Notification Toggles" that give you EQS capabilities.

One common line nearly every reviewer had to say was about the possibility of the headphone jack pin getting lost. And im like so what, at least it comes with a pin and better than not having anything.

I think it is very good idea..
Now I've got my BlueTooth headphones, I can leave this in.
I can't see why people complained. You don't see iPhone users walking around with their SIM removal tool in their hand do you? No. They leave it at home in the box. When using wired headphones I did just that.
I bought my P6 when they were first released, paying full price (SIM Free), while I'm 'miffed' that the price has dropped, I still think it was an excellent 'phone and at the new lower price it is a steal. Had Huawei managed to keep the price high but spend some money advertising the 'phone they could have sold extremely well. Personally I think the EmotionUI interface is a good one. Less menus and buttons to press, a combination of the best of IOS and Android. If they could add some functionality to the lock screen it could be even better.
Do you guys think we coudl also put a pin push botton in it for making easier photo's with the camera ?
...
I also remember complaining about the theme from what i saw online. But after buying the device and just changing into the other themes that comes with it and nice wallpaper of my selection, it was enough to see that the theme was great Its just that Huawei used a dull, boring, cheap looking theme as default. With a good theme, the awesomeness of the screen also become more apparent.
Whats more, i just added a dozen or more new themes from the emotion UI website, and it looks even more awesome. A totally new feel on every theme and seems like id take years before i even finish using them all enough.
No need for any third party launchers for me at least, just like they advertised it in their teasers :good:
Good job Huawei :good:
For those who want an app drawer, they can just add a folder onto the bottom fixed row where the app drawer traditional stays. The bottom row has room for 5 although by default there is only 4 apps. So a 5th folder can be squeezed in between and becomes your app drawer.
Me personally though haven't found any need for an app drawer yet. And with the creative idea of folders, I actually like that i have a choice.
I don't like the no-app-drawer launcher, it feels like a shanzhai (Chinese word, means cheap copy) of iOS, and I hate putting everything on desk
I use apex and ss launcher, it's a pity then I can't use the themes, some themes are really beautiful
anyway, as a Chinese, I'm glad you like this Chinese phone

I felt it as iOS copy initially and went about complaining. But after buying the device and making my own customization of theme or using alternate themes dont feel that way at all anymore.
My personal take on app drawer is that its just a matter of transition effect. The real usage I agree though is to differentiate frequent used apps from the others. But with the option of folders then that can be solved more efficiently. Either make an app drawer folder and dump all into it or make a couple of folders on homescreen for your frequent used apps and arrange them according to app type. So basically eliminates the need for app drawer, allows users more choice, reduces the doubling of app shortcuts.
I have used the samsung touchwiz as well as Sony UI including its new one on my bros Xperia Ultra. I havent liked them and found them too empty and limited in customization that got me bored of it quite quick. On my samsung device i visit the app drawer like once in a month and have all frequent used apps like a mess on my homescreen thumbnails. The EMUI feels more organized and neater to me. And on the sony, i see that they have a new side tab that opens up on the app drawer section through which apps can be arranged according to frequent use and alphabetical order and some other minor options. To me that is just another waste of space and needless tool because the app drawer by nature would distinguish frequent used apps from that apps kept on homescreen. So no need another round of it.
But maybe many users planned to use launchers anyway and hence they want the p6 to be stock as much as possible ? Or maybe users used an iphone and feel this is all too common and find the app drawer more new and different ? Either way i personally don't want EMUI taking step backwards and feeling like all other phones and would prefer them finding new creative better ways to get around needs. For example, the ability to create folders within folders, for someone who need more specific ordering of apps or if they want to make the folder feel like an app drawer. The ability to arrange apps on homescreen according to recent used, most used, alphabetical order, etc. Or some scrollable bottom tray so that more apps can be fit into it. And things like that. But all of this has to be considered with regards to ease and not eating too much RAM. So if you have some new smart ways of making what you need possible and better then you can send that as feedback (see topic here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2440424) for their upcoming EMUI 2.0.
Good to have you on the forum. How well is the P6 doing in China ?
Okay i found something negative about the phone that music listeners might want to watch out. Since the headphone jack is on the sides, those headphones which got a straight jack (like the S4 headphones i use) just totally sticks out and looks weird. lol. While the Huawei headphones got a L jack that totally fits fine in terms of jack placement, but the headphones itself don't fit my ears. Stays loose and sounds weak. So you would have to buy a new headphone with L shaped jack. :good: But i might just go for a Bluetooth headset :good:

[Q] Different between 4.2 and 4.3

Hey guys...
I want to ask something..
Since i don't get the update, i want to ask something to someone that already update....
What's the different UI, battery life, camera, etc compare to the 4.2
Sorry about my grammar
- 4.3 UI looks like xperia z1 ui. And has theme downloadable from Sony select
- One hand keyboard
- Messiging app.contacts app nice changes
-Battery much better.
- Camera app changed. And more options.
-small apps. Now u can open more than one small app on the same time.
- x reality (not sure)
- Many many other improvements

Seems smoother. NO x reality engine.... BRAVIA engine 2, don think that will change even with 4.4..... so far so good overall
I like how it looks and how smooth is it, but for me there still many bugs on this versión, my pone stucks, and when browing on chrome also, i had to push the reset button 2 times already, camera is better on 4.2 and on 4.2 versión .244 was so so much better. no stucks, no bugs for me, smooth great camera, so I decided to go back to 4.2 and ill w8 for sony to improve the 4.3 or launch the 4.4

I agree about the camera being better before the 4.3 update. I was thinking, after testing the camera once I updated to 4.3, that I wish I could switch back to 4.2. But you say you went back to 4.2? How do you do that? I have about zero knowledge of hacking/modding/custom firmwares/etc, so forgive me if it is supposed to be common knowledge. If you do decide to help me out in switching back to 4.2, perhaps it would be better to send a private message, instead of cluttering up this topic? Otherwise, though, I think I might just find a good alternate camera app from the Play Store.
But anyway, I do think overall, Android 4.2 was better. I don't think Sony really spent much time optimizing 4.3 for the Xperia ZL.

You can downgrade using Flashtool. You can try using the search box too. Many of us here have spent many (many) months and many hours per day to get to know and learn some about these basic operations and tweakings, and to not brick our devices in the attempt.
Please do a bit of researching and reading n.n
BTW, I think I'll wait for KIT KAT too. Looks like it's the hassel free bet.

You can downgrade using Flashtool. You can try using the search box too. Many of us here have spent many (many) months and many hours per day to get to know and learn some about these basic operations and tweakings, and to not brick our devices in the attempt.
Please do a bit of researching and reading n.n

Thanks for the suggestion. I searched around on this site for a little while and on Google yesterday. I'll look into the Flashtool thing too. The main risk that kind of drives me away from doing anything like rooting or what have you, is the chance of bricking my phone. I spent alot of money on my new ZL(a lot for me anyway), so I think for now I will probably just wait until Kit Kat like you. I think I read that Sony will be improving the camera when they release Kit Kat for the Z series phones, as well as some UI improvements, so it sounds as though they know the camera became slightly worse after 4.3. I hope anyway. But thanks for the help. :good:

You're welcome.
Actually, you don't need to know much. But it'd be useful to know more. You can be perfectly fine with a rooted stock ROM, like the 4.2.2.
Now, If you want "the best ROM", that can be a lot of researching, reading, flashing, testing and reflashing.
I'd suggest you to stay with the ROM Sony provides and that you just root it, when there's a easy way (like for the 4.2.2 rom).
There can be lot's of tweaks to do, there can be lot's of root apps to use; but almost all of them just need root. Nothing else. And most tweaks' benefits are not as noticeable as they were for earlier devices with less powerful hardware... So, not much to do there anyway.
I only use a little bunch of root apps, for example:
FullScreen (to play games full screen, mostly)
Rebooter (DoomLord's)
Dynamic NavBar (I use it with FullScreen)
ROM Toolbox Pro (to backup, uninstall, disable, etc some apps)
Disable Services (good to kill unwanted services like "Google Analytics Service")
AutoStarts (really usefull to help control what apps start with the system)
Set CPU (For cpu profiles to save some battery juice)
Avast's Anti Theft feature (quite important)
Avast's Backup app (quite usefull to restore/share apps's data and setings having several devices)
And some others.
With these I tweak the system a bit and make the UI a little more like I'd like it to be. The UI is fine, I'd just like the stupid navbar would hide itself by default when gaming n.n
Well, I got to this conclusion after checking out a lot of ROMs, and their pros and cons; that I'll better do my own little tweakings and the ROM is fine. Haha
Enjoy your time actually using the device. It's already -quite- fine. The 4.3 and 4.4 will make it much, much better, though!
The ZL has a lot of future and you did a very good bet by buying it. It's very beautiful.
Check out the apps I mention, you can learn some by reading what each is for.

Just ordered the Tab S4...any tips for a new owner?

Aside from installing Vanced youtube...I am not sure I need root anymore. Weird to say that as I was big into custom ROMs, root, overclocking my phones back in the day
Anyway, mostly using this to replace my aging original Tab S 10.5 which is now been used inside my PC to display CPU speeds, temps, etc.
It was lagging with EMBY and other things even with custom ROMs but I am glad I was able to find a new home for it to be useful.
Thanks for any feedback!
Same boat, I was really into root and other tweaks, now I'll get frustrated if I have to spend much time getting the experience I supposedly paid for. I actually just browse this forums in hopes of an update on next oneUI versions since they seem to have fixed some of the small caveats I find with the current version; sadly we are probably never going to get it though.
Anyway, the tab is beautiful and fast, and it will do most of the things you are expecting without losing a beat. To get the most out of it I would recommend getting the "good lock" apps to further personalize your experience (I wish someone told me about these before since I used the device for a month before finding them). The one hand operation(together with navigating gestures), the task changer(smaller more manageable app changer menu and initializing apps in floating mode from there), and the multistar(some nice tweaks to the floating mode like swiping from a to corner to start floating an that is already on screen) are the most useful in my perspective. I also downloaded an app called edge gestures to personalize my gesture experience even further, and an app called no keyboard because sometimes you just need to select/move/copy/paste text without the keyboard(even floating) to take any space on your screen.
Other nice apps I would recommend would be concepts(though still in development it is a nice vector based, layer-supporting drawing app), write 3.0 for general note taking(snappier stroke experience you'll get on android, and also vector based), and I cannot believe how much I have gotten into 3d sculpting and modeling with an app called nomad(is just so much fun even without knowing what you are doing).
I hope you have a great time with your tablet!

Than you so much for the information! Mine arrives tomorrow. I will research all the apps you mentioned.
I totally agree with Pazzu510. I use my tablet a looooooot, I use it for work and for media. I'm going to recommed you to give it a try the default samunsg apps that comes with the tablet. I LOVE the file explorer, you can syncronize one note and its just perfect. The browser is awesome too, it has a lot of configurations. I use samsung notes for my college notes, but I already tried noteshelf (very good app too, but samsung works better with the spen in my opinion. Try both and use whatever you like more) Xodo, to annotate on pdf or just open them its just a must have. It has a very good integration with the spen, onenote, etc, and you can have mutiple pdfs open.
I recommend you to set the battery limitation to 85% to protect it. And take a time and configure the energy app administration settings to bring you the best experience.
I'm very very happy with my tablet and I hope you the same!!

Thank you very much. It is on the UPS delivery truck and should be here in the next 3 hours or so. Really pumped to finally upgrade from the old S 10.5
Thanks for the tips!
The tablet is fantastic so far. Just trying to figure out which case style I prefer now. Probably will end up with like 4 cases at least.
The one disappointment was the sound...with the 4 speakers "tuned by akg" I was expecting more. My Mate 20x actually sounds better (which I know is highly regarded for sound but still). Luckily speaker usage is not crucial for me.

I thought the same thing. Almost a year later and still no android 11 with the sm-t837T. So that's pretty much my reason for wanting root. Lineage os! I've yet to root this tablet. Wonder is dex is gone it you flash a custom rom
