Three months to the day? - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

It's been three months since the G3 has been released and we still don't have a unlocked boot loader. I'm new to this device and not all familiar with previous LG models so my question basically, is this normal for a LG device to take this long to get a unlocked boot loader?
I've had many Samsung/HTC devices and don't recall waiting this long for the phone to take off on development. I do really like the phone and it is a very nice phone but for me not being able to flash kernals, rooms, etc is disappointing. Would like to hang on to the phone but I'm just not sure of how future development will turn out. Just my 2 cents.

The G2s bootloader was never unlocked but an exploit to install custom Roms and kernels was found. HTC and Sony allow bootloader unlocking from their own website. Will there be a G3 boootloader unlock? Who knows but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Unfortunately kind off thought that. To bad, such a good phone. Don't know why some manufacturers do this and others don't.

You can watch the bounty thread in the AT&T G3 General forum. That's where the news will likely break from thecubed.
Should be any day now, but I haven't been on IRC to see how things are going.

Category is "Mobile Phones" and search for "LS970"
Oddly there are two different versions. Even more oddly, searching for "970" (the generic number for the Optimus G) the Sprint version is the only one available, even though the International and AT&T versions have already been released.
I don't suppose this will help much in getting the bootloader unlocked but good to have at least. Will be useful if we do. No one is worse than HTC about releasing source.

Most devices don't get the resources that sextape gave us, so they rely on guesswork primarily. We are very lucky to have thecubed also who is doing all of the actual unlocking and has experience with lg devices and bootloaders.

And I grabbed the kernel source before I saw this and I will build if someone can pull the ramdisk. I need all the init and ueventd files and everything in sbin.

Hey, i want to ask something, is that possibilty to get "an unlocked bootloader" is just for spirint,at&t or something related to carrier? I'm living in turkey and probably i will be able to get international one but i don't want to live with lg updates forever, so could you guys give me an idea?
Sorry for my awful english and ignorance...

I'm assuming that if one gets unlocked, then the process for unlocking the other variants will be fairly the same if not the exact same. So if one gets unlocked, then they should all be able to be unlocked, assuming that all of the variants are locked down the same. Someone please correct me if I'm mistaken.
Awesome. I really wanted a Nexus 4 but I guess I'll settle for it's step brother.

Great news- about to pre-order, think a non-removable battery is a deal breaker? Invariably seems I need to pull the battery at some point.

I don't think it's a problem. I have a Nexus 7 with a sealed battery and I've never had to worry about it. Any times that it completely locked up (including while in fastboot), I can hard reset it by holding all the buttons down for a while.

Agreed. Same for my galaxy tab 10.1. You'd think it'd be an issue, but there are other ways to enhance the juice pack and other ways to force reboots.

No development?

I was thinking of giving LG another shot, and picking up this phone. I am surprised that there is still no development for yet. I'm not to sure that I want to pick this up anymore if it is locked down and still has no one working on a solution.

Wait what? Unlocked bootloader for AT&T version is available? Sorry, been out of the loop, this new excites me!
There has been significant progress on both the ATT and Sprint models, check the development threads in each of those respective sub-forums. Hopefully some of that will spill over into the international section here as well.
Not available. Not yet. But you can actually follow the development of it. And something might be happening tonight in the next 3-4 hours.

There is a lot of progress being made for the AT&T and Sprint variants but I asked on IRC a couple days ago if they would also be applicable to the international (the ones we got in Canada) versions and the answer isn't clear yet. Hopefully that is the case!

Yeah just finished reading the thread. Awesome! I'm going to hold out until the Rogers variant gets unlocked. Hopefully there will be a price drop too. Not that it is currently expensive. Looking forward to getting this phone for sure. I love my GNex, but the new nexus 4 just didn't tick my boxes the right way.
**Update**
I couldn't wait. I just ordered it Plus I got them to get it to me for $49 after a $50 MIR. Sounds like a fair price to me.

I was in the same boat. Though it looks more and more like there's just att and sprint development. Nothing at all for canadian version. And who knows if there will be any development. Ah well there's always a place to sell my phone and get an N4 if I get tired of it. Lol.
Sent from my LG-E971 using xda app-developers app
I am in the same boat (living in Canada), I want this phone too and the N4 didnt really do it for me besides the timely updates and being the first to get them. With the Optimus G being practically the same phone as the N4 I am very tempted to get this but without development for it, it is pretty much the only thing keeping me back from getting it.
I got the telus variant, and god this thing is blazing fast!
And, the bloatware from telus is realy kept to a minimum, only one link to download the app that recommends some apps. So, if you don't want any, you don't have any!
The interface is pretty much like the Samsung's one, but better. The additions of nice features like the menu on the drop down menu, the apps on the lock screen, things like that are pretty usefull. And, they put a backup utilities it there, nice touch!
the unlocked bootloader will bring most likely more fun and more open roms, but as of now, the stock rom is pretty good!
I am remaining hopeful that the development for this phone will come. The developer, or one of them, "thecubed" who put together the "FreeGee" exploit to unlock the bootloader has stated in his thread that the Canadian, and Korean variants will be next to get the treatment. In that order as well. Just a matter of time I think.

It won't be long until we get s-off for 4.3. I did the replacement thing, but the phone had gaps and didn't line up...had the camera issue too. I sent it back. I'd rather have my original phone over a refurb. Just my .02 though.

Perhaps. In my eyes all the carriers are all about the $$$$$.
On the other hand you would think Verizon wouldn't make such foolish decisions such as delaying the One for FIVE MONTHS. I bet they lost tons of money trying to sell their crappy Droid lineup and failing miserably. They also delayed the S4 by about a month behind other carriers. I really don't know what goes through their head honestly. Whatever it is, it's not intelligence...

[Q] Will the G4 ever see all the known ROMS (Dirty Unicorns, Resurrection Remix,...)?

Coming from Samsung and Sony there were always many great ROMS available for the phones.
It looks like there's already a new phone in LGs scope which will come out soon.
(And there's also the locked Bootloader we have here - which might get opened sometime?)
What do you think about the LG G4?
Will developers skip the phone and directly proceed to the newer phone?
Will we ever see so much support like for the other phones (Samsung, Sony,...)?
What are your opinions?
Once the boot loader gets opened for everybody then i think we will see Roms.
Verstuurd vanaf mijn LG-H815 met Tapatalk
Based on how popular the G2 & G3 seemed to be (and really still are) I am sure once we gain the ability to flash ROMs they will start to flow our way. Even with the G4 Pro coming in December (allegedly) I do not think that will slow down the development for us, it will just give the Devs one more device to play with.
(We still have ROMs for both versions of the S6/S6 Edge and the Note 4/Note Edge)
Sooner or later yeah. But first people need root and ability to flash roms.

International version can already be unlocked, rooted and has twrp availible. I am quite confident that there will be developement done. But the device is quite new so let the devs some time.

"We" don't have root yet. Yes there are a couple of devs that were able to root a phone, after bricking their first phone. While it is highly likely that there will be a root method released to the masses, there is no guarantee that everyone will get root access. I bought my G4 with the assumption that we'll get it, but also aware that we may never get it. My S4 is my daily driver until we get root access for the G4.
It should be much easier to find a safe way (for Joe Schmoe) to root, with the rooted G4 they currently have.

I Just got my new G4 for fathers day through sprint unfortunately, also have a LG G Flex 2 which is a POWERHOUSE. well both are monsters, but i cant wait for root and unlocked bootloader+carrier unlock, hopefully they all come soon.
also i just went from a G2 to the G Flex 2 to the G4, love them all
I have a question. I understand that root has been achieved on the G4 and that the method hasn't been released. My main question is this: when that method or other methods are released, would any of them offer a bootloader unlock along with it or would users have to rely on the LG site to do so? Right now I have the 815 version and know the bootloader is unlockable but do not have a pc to do the bootloader unlock process. Am I better off waiting for an official release here on xda that may involve a bootloader unlock?

I have a question. I understand that root has been achieved on the G4 and that the method hasn't been released. My main question is this: when that method or other methods are released, would any of them offer a bootloader unlock along with it or would users have to rely on the LG site to do so? Right now I have the 815 version and know the bootloader is unlockable but do not have a pc to do the bootloader unlock process. Am I better off waiting for an official release here on xda that may involve a bootloader unlock?

Welcome. I'm wonder how it is possible that Windows Phone 10 working on Xiaomi phone when this phone is for ANDROID. So there is a question, is it possible to port Windows Phone 10 for LG G4 ?
Well, good idea, would be great...however seeing how dev unfriendly LG is, there is no chance

what do you mean..."however seeing how dev unfriendly LG is...'' ??
@klisza1993: He's angry about not being able to unlock his bootloader, like many users are. Understandable. But if you're lucky and able to unlock your bootloader, there's a good variety of possibilities. But not a single one to get Windows running on it. Windows on phones is bugged as hell, full of errors so like the camera on official devices is crashing without any warning out of nowhere, etc.
No supporr for developers, bootloader still locked, etc.
