Tempered Glass - Recurring Problem - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First, let me say that I'm not a novice with respect to tempered glass screen protectors. I've been using them since they first started coming out for the second gen iPhone and have continued to use them with every Android device I've owned for which they have been available. That being said, I'm having the strangest problem with these protectors on my LG G3 and I'm curious whether anyone else has experienced this.
I'm now on my third different brand of tempered glass screen protector for the G3. Each one has installed fine and looked great. But after a few weeks, each one started to develop an air bubble in the exact same spot. It is on the first right side along the edge about 1/3 from the top. The bubbles have consistently been about 3/4 of an inch long and cannot be pressed out. After it happened the first time, I assumed there was simply an adhesive issue with that particular brand. When it happened with the next one, I thought maybe there was dirt or oil built up on the spot and gave the whole screen a strenuous cleaning. But now it has happened again with the third protector and I'm extremely frustrated to the point where I'm considering going back to the old school, non-glass protectors.
Has anyone else been hit with this same problem?

I've had mine on since a week after release and have no problems

seems rather odd, it's definitely in exactly the same place ?
that can only mean there's something on the screen then, and I'm not sure how the older style would help you any more ?
I ordered a cheap and cheerful glass protector from ebay.co.uk, it's 0.33mm thick, and has a small layer of glue (similar to LOCA you use replacing screens, but weaker so it can be removed easily). this layer helps it remove all bubbles and imperfections. Maybe try a protector which has this glue ?

Maybe your phone has a slight defect causing the issue. Try looking to see if there is a chip, scratch or abnormality in the display
Also I've had many issues with Spigen and Xtreme Guard, howveve, my MIME is great!

I had tried two so far, Spigen and nillkiin, had issues with both with bubbles that won't go away. I had mine in different spots.
On closed inspection I realized that it is because the glass screen protectors where slightly bent at the corners. Maybe happend during installation. It needs to be perfectly flat, once bent you cannot do anything

I'm on my second iCarez protector and I too am having a reoccurring air bubble in the same spot. I thought about switching brands..

Interesting. One of mine was definitely an iCarez.

I should clarify, by same spot, I mean for me specifically. Both iCarez protectors created a bubble close to the LED Notification light.

I had the same bubbling problem with the iCarez. I switched to this one and haven't had an issue for a little over a week now.

I'll give this one a shot. Do let us know if something comes up

I also had the issue with iCarez after about a week, contacted them and they sent me a new one. I told them if it happens again I expect another replacement and they assured me they would keep sending until there were no issues. Doesn't solve the problem though.

I have the Zagg Glass and after a few weeks have noticed no issues at all. This is my first glass screen protector I've ever used and from reading about all the others I'm glad I spent the extra money for it. I actually got it for $27 during a sale they ran.

I have never had any issues with spigen tempered glass

I have the Spigen tR Nano Slim and it seems to affect the touch sensitivity. My phone is always registering accidental clicks when i mean to be scrolling.

I just applied a Tech Armor (.3 mm, 9h) glass protector and it went on very easily. A couple of small bubbles that were easy to remove and now I don't even notice that it's there (except that I think it's actually smoother than the regular glass). It was very cheap ($12 from amazon w/ free shipping) and seems to be good quality.

[Q] Moto X Screen Protectors ?

Hello Folks,
I know there are loads of screen protector threads out there but none of them are recent for the MotoX.
I have had an XtremeGuard Protector on my X for a few months, but the gummyness, orange peel and lack of screen sensitivity is killing me.
What are some good current options that are $15 or under ?
Thanks,
Pete
I'm currently using the SUPCASE Screen protector that came with my case: has everything I need to get it on once and only once(even comes with a lint remover film). Looks and feel great. I don't know what you mean by 'gummyness though, the only screen protector I would describe that has a gummy-like feel(especially when I pinch with my fingernail is the Skinomi brands.

I am using this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EVWX5VO/ref=oh_details_o01_s01_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Thank you for the suggestions folks

I'll second these. I had the ArmorSuit and it was terrible. These are cheap, durable and don't negatively affect the screen.I've been using one for over 2 months and it still looks fine.

I bought a couple of the Mimeusa.com glass screen protectors, one for my wife and another for myself. Installed mine first, its a little different installing such a stiff protector, luckily i was able to lift it back up easily a couple times to adjust the positioning.
The wifes I installed a couple hours after, and it felt like it gave me more problems. didn't want to get positioned right, but eventually I got it lined up well.
The next day it fell off in her car while she was driving and got covered in dirt and dust on the adhesive side.
Mine is still on, after 2 weeks of use;
The texture is awesome! i hate most screen protectors, but this is glass and feels so good to the touch. you hardly notice its there.
It hasn't taken and scratches, and it does feel like fingerprints are less noticeable than on the bare screen.
I don't have a case of my X yet, ordered a bumper from amazon, but its not here yet.
I feel that the protector gathers small fibers easily at the edge. there are a couple of very small fibers that have worked there way just under the edge of the glass. They are hardly noticeable, especially when the screen is on.
I have not seen any new accumulation since the first few days, so maybe its more prone to catching the fibers in the hours / day after installation. I would advise avoiding pockets for 24 hours after installing this product if you can.
I will probably use this screen protector until it chips/breaks/gets too scratched up, and then go naked screen for the rest of the phones life.
If you are intending to spend $15 for a screen protector, might as well get a tempered glass one. I'm using this one: http://www.amazon.com/i-Blason-Motorola-Ultra-Thin-Tempered-Protector/dp/B00E0CUP18/
If you installed it correctly the first time, it should stay stuck and without any bubbles.

I would just like to throw out my support for Liquid Armor. I use it on all of my touchscreen devices, and have never had a scratch on a screen since, and it feels just like glass, without anything on it. The best part is that the one bottle can be used for several screens. Though if you don't use it in a couple months, the stuff will harden in the nozzle of the bottle, making it more difficult to use.
Edit: figured Id throw in a link. http://www.amazon.com/Dynaflo-LIQUID-ARMOR-Universal-Microfiber-DYN-LA100SP/dp/B007EZ3EM0

Disclaimer: I posted this in a couple other threads, but I wanted to try and post it where I know we've been discussing tempered glass screen protectors.
Here's some pictures of the redesigned i-Blason protector. As you can see, there is now a cutout for the proximity sensor. The corners also fit the Moto X perfectly (their old design fit perfectly too). Very happy I finally have a protector that FITS and where the proximity sensor won't be blocked! I liked the i-Blason until I had started having proximity sensor issues because I had dropped it several times, and it never once cracked, unlike the MIME, which cracked the very first time I dropped it.

i have tempered glass on my moto X ( mimeusa.com/product/moto-x-ghost-glass-screen-protector/ ) since january.
it was very easy to install and the feel is wonderful. my only complaint is that when you drop your phone, it can crack. better a crack on the protector than a scratch on the device, right? my phone has been pretty suicidal lately, what w/ jumping off tables, so it has accumulated many cracks on the protector. i am replacing it (with same ghost glass) and also buying a bumper case ... that may make a difference in the life span of the protector.
this is my first glass protector and yes i like it. on previous devices i used zagg screen protectors and was VERY HAPPY with them, but when i ordered their protector for the moto X, i found that they must have screwed up on the device specs, as the film didn't even cover the entire viewing screen. UNACCEPTABLE! i will not go back to their products.
I had the MIMEUSA and was very happy with the feel of the MIMEUSA, but it didn't fit properly. The corners were too squared and extended over the screen. The edges were also suppose to be beveled to prevent chipping but mine seemed like they were beveled out, leaving a lip on the glass. This all led to the edges chipping and eventually a larger break.
I ordered the i-Blason to try it and am very happy. The fit is perfect, its quite a bit thinner than the MIMEUSA, and it feels just as slick and smooth as the MIMEUSA and the glass screen. I would recommend the i-Blason over the MIMEUSA. And the i-Blason is only $17 on Amazon making it about the same price as the high quality plastic protectors.

tempered glass screen problems

Am I the only one who has problems keeping the tempered glass protectors on this phone? Ive been through 3 different brands and they all eventually lift around the camera and edges. Its making me thing the phones screen itself isnt 100% flat.
Kind of annoying because Im REALLY good at installing these and never get bubbles.
I've been through two. I don't think it's the screen though as both lifted in different areas. I think I'm just buying the crappiest of crappy protectors.

Im buying good ones Ive always used in the past and they keep coming up. Its really annoying.
first one was spigen, next ones were intelligalss.
Do you have a case that could be interfering with them?
I'm using pretty much the cheapest ones I could get on eBay, and had one that cracked and still hadn't lifted. The replacement has held up fine as well.
The only other thing I can think of is perhaps your phone is exposed to a bunch of moisture (humid environment, or sweat?) That might slowly away at the adhesive.
Are you cleaning the screen well before installing?
Same thing : a Spigen that lift around the bottom speaker....
I've had bad luck with TGSPs in the past, but I put a Pleson TGSP from Amazon on my N5x in January and have had zero problems with it so far. Go figure.
I don't use a case - just a dbrand skin and the TGSP.
I have the IntelliARMOR screen protector and using a Ringke Fusion case. Been 6 months and still attached with no lifting.
I've been through a ton.......Go w/ the ballisitic grade. WORLD OF DIFFERENCE and its only a few bucks more
Pleson tempered glass here that I installed as soon as I removed the phone from the package last October. Zero issues.
I've used numerous cases as well.
Commonly caused by the lip on a case. Non-flat glass can cause appearance of bubbles but will not lift the glass entirely.

Found a great film protector

Not many post on XDA but I promise you I do not work for this company lol. I've been searching forever for a good screen protector and glass is off the table. Whitestone is too expensive and I know I'd mess it up! I've gone through several brands of films on Amazon that have good/moderate reviews but they have all had poor coverage or just didn't stick down on the edges, and I consider myself a pro at installing films. Found a new one that claimed it used new technology to create a tpu type film and took a gamble on it as there where no reviews/ratings. I am pleased to announce that with proper care putting it on its flawless, adheres 100% to the sides and is almost unnoticeable by touch or look. (Except for that it's film and not glass) I will note however that be careful installing as the adhesive is very strong, and getting dust out after installing is near if not impossible. I'll post pics tomorrow of the product and a pic of my phone with it installed!

Honestly I just got tired of looking for screen protectors. I made this account on XDA forever ago and decided that since I'd finally found one I'd just like to share my experience to maybe save some others frustration. I always lurk around here, have since the Moto a855 days, just never get on and post.
If someone does decide to try one of these protectors and chimes in that'd be great as I know my low post count doesn't make me look very believable lol
ha. yeah, I suspected some time ago, that an employee or more were making accounts promoting their asian battery, with low post counts.

I got mine on without bubbles, but I learned very quickly the adhesive is extremely strong on these screen protectors and getting tiny bubbles out is very hard. You have to choose a large one and push it around through all the smaller ones. As far case usage goes, they fit snug and the only case I own is a OtterBox Symmetry which I have no problems with.
In the description and picture it states these have a 9H rating, and while I've had mine on since Friday without any scratches I have to call BS on that claim. They are a tpu film, feel like film, definitely don't feel like glass but are 100% crystal clear. They seems fairly durable compared to some other PET films I've used, and they are much thicker/heavy duty. (Can't tell once applied however)

No orange peel at all. 100% smooth like PET. I can't stand wet apply protectors because of the orange peel/clarity so I've never used them. Always stuck to cheap PET and this is very similar.
Like I said though, I can't stress enough to be careful putting it on as it has a very strong adhesive. It is still easy to take off and leaves no residue, but getting dust/dirt/hair out after is impossible. It's not like normal PET that uses static.
I did get a short piece of hair on mine when installing, which I'd normally remove or put on a new film after, but with the adhesive and TPU this seems to have just molded around it and it's almost not noticable. Leaves no air as the protector won't push back up. I'm very OCD with my protectors.
EDIT: Also, another note is that where this is a hard TPU film I have noticed it resist scratches very well but will indent like the wet apply protectors when force is applied such as with a finger nail. It does seem to recover after awhile. Funny how it's a TPU that feels like film. Also, 4 days now and no signs of peeling/no scratches. My phone is in and out of my pants pocket all day long.

Use a piece of scotch tape to remove any dust the gets behind it. Just peel up your screen protector then use the tape (sticky side to screen protector sticky side) to pull any dust or hair off the inside.

I tried that. Tape stuck to the adhesive on the film and when pulling off left a mark where the tape was on it. Like I said, the screen protector has a strong adhesive and doesn't use static. Usually only static pet protectors can have dust removed with tape. In this case, the adhesive on the film is stronger than tape.
How's it holding up a week later?
great screen protector
thanks OP for recommending this
I installed mine a bit over a week ago and have to say fairly impressed with it. It is stronger than your normal PET protectors (doesn't get micro scratches easily) and has very strong adhesive as the OP mentioned (great for the edges).
I did buy the case friendly version though instead of the full screen one
https://www.amazon.com/JOLOJO-Protector-Anti-Bubble-Strengthened-Application/dp/B071NZKKT1/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1501007553&sr=8-2&keywords=jolojo
As far as install is concerned - If you have a rubber squeegee (had one from the armorsuite products) it will help greatly. Combine that with the hinge method and you will get a really good install.
Cons
You have to be pretty damn exact for the borders. There is really no room for error.
Not glass but I am definitely happy with it.
I bought a wet install film screen protector and I am loving it... No touch sensitivity issues, easy to install, and self heals scratches... I have used it on on a few past phones as well as smartwatches and have never had any issues with them.

It’s Supershieldz for me.
Got these today. Chuck is right, they are somewhat a pain to install but the result is great. Recommend.
Does the material of the Jolojo feel rubbery like other films do or is it smoother with less friction?

Mini scratches

Hello there
I own the device for about a week and a a half, and not using a screen protector, my phone haven't fell once and I don't think it was even next to a sharp thing, but now after looking closer to the screen I can a couple of mini scratches on the display l, I've tried removing them with my finger but they just won't come off.
Is there anything to do?
How is that possible for gorilla glass 5 to be so easy to scratches.
Thank you.
Yup, happened for me to. Ordered a screenprotector from germany two weeks after I had got my s9, because they werent in stock yet and it was cheaper to buy it from there than paying 50euro at a local store. When I cleaned and was ready to apply screenprotector , I realised too that it had alot of mini scratches, and I had for two weeks always keep my "phone pocket clean". It doesnt look like brand new anymore , more like 6months of wear. Ofc it doesnt affect when screen is on, but it would have been fun have clean screen under the protector. Really dissapointed of the quality.
Has anyone tried Moxie Liquid Screen Protector? Don't like screen protectors and this sounded like a good alternative. Applied it a week ago and so far so good. Just wondering if anyone's tried or used it before and what your thoughts are.
(Sorry, I know this is a bit off topic from the OP post. If others have had success or recommend it, it might work for after fixing your minor, yet annoying, scratches)
Sent from my SM-G965U1 using Tapatalk
Yeah it is really annoying. I had my S9+ less for about two days when I noticed two x 1 cm long mini scratches right across the middle of the screen. Really obvious when the screen is OFF. Less so when it is ON. Whereas my S7 edge got bashed around for over two years without a screen protector and not a visible scratch. Same with my previous Sony phone. So these new GG screens are definitely a backward step when it comes to scratch resistance. Naively assumed it would be the same surface as my S7 edge.
YES - I have actually tried applying Crystalusion - Liquid Screen Glass Protector and it had no obvious effect in reducing the visibility of the scratches. Granted Crystalusion say it wont fix existing scratches but may make them less obvious.
A web search shows it is a fairly common occurrence on the S9. People like me who have had previous Samsung phones that never scratched and are surprised and dismayed to see how easily the S9/S9+ does. Seemingly no one has had success polishing them out so will probably only make it worse trying.
I will wait in a vain hope that someone comes up with workable method to repair these micro scratches.
I've had the same problem. The front screen got scratched far too easily. Poor form for something this expensive. I found that the whitedome screen protector eliminated the visibility of the scratches as the adhesive fills the scratches, including a somewhat deep one.
My previous phones never had this issue
The Whitestone dome glass protector is great. It was around 35$ though. I followed a video and it went on so easy and looks really good. I highly recommend it.

How do you like it? Is it thick? Do you notice it being there? Does it feel different than the normal screen? Sorry, lots of questions! Never tried this before.
So far I have zero complaints about it. It's a liquid that comes on a moist towelette. Wipe it on and wait 15 min before wiping off. When your done it has no feel. Really just like a naked screen with nothing on it. It does seem to clean easier but maybe that's just my imagination.
This is my 1st Samsung phone and I was worried about a fragile screen. I'm comparing it to my last phone, a Moto ZForce. I've dropped this 4 times. On the back, the face and the sides. I also mainly carry it in the back pocket of my jeans. Screen has zero scratches or cracks. And with there guarantee ($350 if you crack the screen) I would recommend it. Hope I answered some of your questions

I have been running without scratches and screen protector for over a month and a friends and this thread has got me worried.

Initially I loved it. It has totally hidden the scratches and there is no way I can see them anymore. It is truly outstanding how it manages to do this.
However after a week or so a small section of air bubbles became visible beneath the protector. In a zone along the left hand curved bezel. lt is about 50mm tall by 5mm wide. Not visible with screen on bit obvious with it off.
Perhaps I did something wrong in the install process. Have contacted whitestone about it but no response. Was hoping I might be able to purchase a replacement for just the screen protector as I still have the install kit and the spare bottle of adhesive.
Thanks for the followup. I haven't buy a screen protectors because there is always a but. Hahahaha, hopefully it won't get scratched or someone will finally find a good long term option.
I suddenly found a scratch on the edge today, but I always take care of my screen, I don't put my phone in places where the screen can be scratched. I just keep it with me.
There isn't too many official screen protectors here, but I found a tempered glass branded NANO OPTICS for about 20$. Is it good? Had anyone tried it?
so i have this very strange scratch which is not a cut in glass it seems. Its more like a scratch when you push an eraser against glass (my phone came with it, noticed as i removed the original glass protector).
Strangely if you buff a bit it completely goes off but would reappear as you use the device within few minutes.
Any one has similar issue ... any advise ?

Samsung screen protector for S10+

Has anyone been able to purchase the stock original screen protector that came with the phone? I swear I saw it briefly on Samsung Canada site under accessories page but it's no where to be found now.
Stock protector feels so smooth once you applied a oleophobic coating on it! Not to mention perfect fitment for the phone.
Part number: ETFG975CTEGCA
Does UK, US or other country Samsung sells the stock protector?
Thanks

I believe they're 18.99 for Samsung UK (ET-FG975CTEGWW). Samsung US has a supply of them, but they are not accessible via sales.
It is 19.99 here in the States.
I was able to purchase one but not going to get it shipped till 4/5.

Got myself a Gadgetshieldz screen guard for the S10+ when I ordered my skin from them. It’s a self healing one and no scratches till now and most importantly it works fine with the fingerprint scanner. This one looks much better than the actual Pre-installed Samsung screen guard. The screen and guard cost me only around 10$ including shipping.

To each his own I guess, I hate self healing skins as they have a orange peel finish and it drags/not smooth. The Samsung original one is PET material, not as smooth as glass but much better than self healing protector.

I'm using the screen protector for a while, No orange peel effect. And it is not a glass protector, It's a plastic protector as you know it's more smooth than glass.

How do you apply the oleophovic coat? Where can I find it?
You get 2 protectors (3-5 would've been nice) and they are made in Korea just like the phone. The packaging mentions shock protection, dunno how valid that statement is!
Otao Screen Protector for S10 Plus
I always liked the GLASS Otao Screen Protectors so I thought I would try the plastic one when it came out on Amazon. To Be honest, I was very pleasantly surprised.
Easy to install (Dry install and not wet) and there were no bubbles or any issue after I installed. I have been using it with a Case (Ringe Crystal Fusion) for about a week and I am very happy with it. Fingerprints work fine with it.
2 Screen Protectors - under $6.00 - Great Price! LINK
I peeled off my screen protector, the fingerprint is instant now. And the feel is much better.

Do these have the same cutout for the front camera or is the whole corner cutout?
Saw someone say that the whole corner was cutout.
It is the whole corner cutout.

I've been using these for the last 3 devices. No issues. On my S10+ the top keeps trying to lift. I'm on my 4th one now and about to give up. They install perfect reach time but after a few days you can see it starting to lift near the top bezel. No case touching it. Anyone else having these issues?

I have the same issue without a case as well. If you look closely you'll see that there is still a thin strip of adhesive keeping it dust tight but still lifting around the edges.
Are there any dry application screen protectors that cover the entire screen like Samsung protector? Those case friendly protectors look weird since they leave margins on the display

Same here, i have been using them since Galaxy S8+, never had any issues, once fitted it stayed good until damaged or removed. Now for S10+ i've had 3 replacements under warranty as it is lifting up or peeling of as they call it, and it is not even close to the edge, i have another replacement waiting to be fitted so i will try to put more glue maybe? as it looks like there is just about in the tube, I am so tempted to remove it and have just natural screen without any protectors but it is an expensive phone
All sold out here
