New to M8, first things first - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Waiting on an M8 arriving today from Virgin mobile. I assume it will be the international version?
What do you recommend to check first? Bootloader/baseband version? (for s off/boot loader unlock purposes)
The choice was between this and a Z2, the Z2 is still a bit tempting but after trying one in store it didn't really seem to have a wow factor. Don't get me wrong it's got really impressive specs and features but it didn't feel as solid as I imagined, think that's were the M8 has other phones beat.
Upgrading from the S4, so not a massive jump, but from what I've read the M8 build quality and software optimisation are second to none.

I could be wrong on this but isnt Virgin Mobile operating on Sprints or Verizons network, which are CDMA, so you shouldnt be getting an international version.
Be very careful, CDMA and GSM ROMS are not interchangable.

ATT version vs internaltional version?

Guys,
Im planning to buy galaxy note 2 no commitment handset but im confused which one to go for. They are same priced. Since i came to US in fall 2011 i have never used a US locked phone. Im currently using htc hd2 (the legend).
My question is if i buy att phone and then unlock it will flashing new roms etc still be a problem compared to international version. Do they provide only a code to unlock the phone or a complete new rom to flash which removes att bootloader and drivers and makes it like an international version. The only difference i guess is about warranty and lte radio between the two variants. I do not care about lte radio since im mostly connected to wifi but i care a little aboutthe warranty.
Some questions might be stupid since im new to this us version phones so im sorry about it.
Thanx in advance for replying

No,you can't install an AT&T Rom on an Int model & vica versa. So, If you have an AT&T model, you can only install AT&T Note 2 ROM's. If you have the Int model, then you can only install the Int Note 2 ROM's. The difference between models is that AT&T LTE band isn't supported on the Int model. So if you want LTE on AT&T then you'll have to get the AT&T model.
Okay thank you guys for your replies.. It indeed cleared my mind. Im gonna pre order no commitment galaxy note 2 from at&t right away so that i get warranty on phone as well..:good::laugh:
similar question> if i buy an unlocked international note 2 like so: http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Galax...1355456&sr=8-1&keywords=samsung+galaxy+note+2
can i use it on the AT&T network by popping my current GS3 simcard in there without issue?
See we didn't get screwed this time with the crappy processor. If we did, then I'd be all over the international version. But we get the exact same specs as the International version plus LTE. The only advantage the international version has is that it will get updates faster, but I don't care about that, as I plan to root anyway.

Yes, if you get an Int GN2, you can pop in your current GS3 simcard without any issues but you won't get LTE speed.

I would of gotten the Int GN2 if it supported AT&T LTE but it didn't so I'm going to get the AT&T one.
Looking at the advantages of att GN2 such as warranty and lte radio i preordered one for myself on no commitment basis..gonna get it by nov 9th for which i just cant wait.. I dont care about updates either since im gonna root it too.

Not true. As long as the partitions are the same on both devices, and considering the hardware between both are mostly the same, it should work fine, as long as the proper modem.bin and kernel is running.

im planning to get the at&t version, but im waiting for reviews to come up. that LTE seems like its gonna go through the 3100mah quickly. i got the original at&t note and i hate having to recharge every 11-12hrs. its crazy how late at&t is on the galaxy note 2. tmobile even beat them to it.

[Q] Got the SGH-M919 (T-Mo S4): Worth changing?

My old phone broke and I had to run out and get a new one on short notice. I went with the Galaxy S4 from a T-Mobile store (SGH-M919).
I am happy with the phone overall, but I place great importance on getting the best value (I don't want to pay the same money for an inferior product). After doing some research, I've found the "8-core" GT-I9500 available on Amazon for roughly the same price. It seems that the Exynos version is more powerful and will have better battery life (compared in this video). The drawback, of course, is that it doesn't have LTE support (although it should work on HSPA).
In addition, now there's the "nexus" version with an unlocked bootloader coming down the pike. My previous phone also had stock Android (HTC Desire-Z / T-mobile G2), and I was extremely happy with it, especially the speed of updates and the fact that I was always getting new features OTA.
So, should I keep the version I have, or get another one and return this phone?
I want to make sure I'm getting the best experience, would giving up LTE support slow down my internet noticeably? Or is T-Mobile HSPA fast enough?
Any difference between the versions if I'm traveling internationally (I can unlock the T-mobile version after 60 days, so that's not an issue, I'm talking about band support, particularly in China)
Should I even consider the stock android / Google version? If I keep the one I have, I plan to root it and will probably use a custom ROM, and it seems there are plenty around for this version, so is the Google unlocked bootloader even an advantage? (only indication it is was is some of the posts in this thread, indicating that the Google version will get updates faster but that the S4's advanced sensors won't work on it). Then again it's also speculated they have the same hardware, so if that's true I could just flash my phone to the Google version and there would be no difference.
Note: I'm not looking to change to another model of phone besides the Galaxy S4. The HTC One is less powerful, has no SD support, and a non-replacable battery, otherwise I would have chosen it.
Rumor has it, that the "nexus" version, is based off the SGH-M919. Just the software is different. So in theory, once the nexus version drops, the modders would be able to reverse engineer the software and make it so that we can flash it onto the T-Mobile version. I'm not sure about having the 8-core GT-I9500. People are saying it isn't truly an octacore phone, nor will we ever need all the cores active at the same time.

The octa core is two quad core chips put together. I highly doubt it's THAT much better than ours. I personally have no issues with mine. Honestly, I think you're getting more with the T-Mobile variant. You can unlock it and use it on any GSM carrier. I would keep what you have. This phone rocks!

Hi elsbb,
How can i understand that my M919 is locked?
I put my diffrent carrier SIM (AVEA) its not asking unlock code.
Thanks for your help...
1) No your browsing wont be slowed down significantly, but not a feature I would personally give up
2) Not that Im aware of, however the T-Mobile variant I think has better band support overall, cannot remember 100% over the top of my head
3) Not really, its rumored to be hardware wise the same as the T-Mo variant.....Also the T-Mo variant which you have is bootloader unlocked already, not sure why you put that as strong point for the Stock Android variant?
Overall I would say stick with what you have, support wise your better off than the international variant (if your into custom roms, development should be stronger overall for the US variants, And the Google version offers nothing over what you can get with 10 min of your time with the phone you have currently.

Thanks everyone who responded for the useful info. I now feel confident about keeping the M919. It's not worth giving up LTE for the tiny improvement in performance (and less custom ROM support) of the quad core, and since the M919 has an unlocked bootloader already, I don't think there's any reason to get the Google version.

I can't personally confirm it, but this thread may have the info you're looking for.
If you have inserted another carriers sim (that is not your own), and it still functions with data, voice, and text, it is sim unlocked.

The performance gains would be little if any in real world usage, battery life would be better by a small amount IIRC, however I am personally able to go two days or more with low usage, or a day without issues with heavy streaming and ~3hr screen on time, YMMV

[Q] Verizon Google Play ROM?

Is it possible to install the Google Play KitKat version for the One (M8) onto the Verizon One (M8)? I really want this phone, but I can not stand the HTC Sense that plagues its. I know things would have to be changed around since the Play Store version of the M8 is GSM. But I couldn't find any mention here on XDA of a port of the Play Store version to the Verizon model.

VZW users are pretty screwed in this respect, if you're tired of all the hardware restrictions Verizon forces upon its customers then you're best off dropping them and switching to a different carrier even if it means a small sacrifice in reception and coverage. I switched from Verizon to ATT then to Tmobile and yes my coverage isn't as good but it's more than adequate and more important I have total freedom of phone hardware to use.
I have the GPe M8 on order and waiting for it soon.

Unfortunately switching to a different Carrier in my area is not an option. I was with AT&T for 6 Years, but moved to a new state/town where any GSM carrier has little to no Service, you might have service in the left corner of the yard, but none in the right corner, and don't even think about going inside a store/building otherwise you'll have no service no matter what corner you head too...
I just really hate the Sense UI. Is there an option to turn off the HTC Feed Screen (left most homescreen) on the M8 like there is on the HTC One Max? I hate how they have those really tiny Navigation icon on that huge black navigation bar. Just seems like a waste of space, imo.
Hopefully someone, somewhere will make a vanilla ROM (keeping the dot matrix, tap unlock, etc,) some day.
Well here's the thing with Verizon, the M8 Verizon MID is the only M8 blocked on HTC Dev, meaning you can't unlock the BL as simply as the other variants...Also the with VZW you're dealing with CDMA and well most Variants including GPE is GSM...the chances of an AOSP/Vanilla non sense ROM on a VZW M8 arent as good as the GSM Variants so long as the BL remains locked. An exploit will have to be found before anything happens on the VZW M8.

Well thats good to know, well bad actually... I've always had Unlocked/Google GSM device since the Nexus was first released, so I was not aware of all that (BS) surrounding VZW/CDMA devices. The LG G2 was the first locked/unroot (I never rooted it) device I've had in years, and the First CDMA device as well. So Thank you for the little bit of information, its makes me hate VZW more and more :good:
Well fingers crossed something happens, as I really want the HTC One (M8), but I really don't want the Sense UI - Even though the Camera is a downgrade from my G2. The good thing about going from the G2 to the HTC One (M8) is that I'll still be able to Tap to wake it... I'm constantly tapping on friends and family members phones trying to turn the screen on, at takes me a couple seconds to remember it does work like that.
Do you use the One (M8) as your daily driver, if so any complaints about it thus far?

Are all non-sprint HTC One M8s the same?

I'm bailing on Sprint due to poor coverage and I'm thinking about going to T Mobile because I like their pricing model. I'm getting 7 day test drive IPhone later today. I'll be moving 5 lines to T Mobile and Adding a line. One of those is for my wife and she want and M8.
When shopping for an HTC One M8, is there any hardware differences that I should be aware of? I know to stay away from Sprint phones, but I'm unsure of Verizon. If I buy an AT&T or T Mobile branded phone, can I load the HTC stock ROM, or a T Mobile stock ROM and expect to get updates?
I'm not looking for a custom ROM as this is the wife's phone and I need to to be stable ans supportable without spending a bunch of my time on it.
For best performance buy a branded device. So if your going with T-Mobile get a TMO branded unit.

I think that is good safe advice. Especially when dealing with a wife phone. From a technical standpoint is flashing a T Mobile stock ROM on an AT&T phone the same as buying a T Mobile phone minus the support?
I dont have proof one way or the other, but one would have to think from a manufacturing stand point that making these a bit generic so that the ATT and TMO software work on the same hardware would make sense. When i had my M7 i flashed the GPe rom onto it and it worked well. Then put it back to stock TMO after a while.
So it would be the same scenario. I just dont know for sure 100% if there are any hardware differences between the two..
sorry i cant help out more..

If you care about getting earphones, don't get the t-mobile htc one m8. The t-mobile htc one m8 does not come with earphones. The other carriers at&t, verizon, sprint come with earphones except t-mobile. Why t-mobile version does not come with earphones is beyond me?

Difference between HTC 10 Carrier Models?

I've been running on an M9 for the past two years, and with the HTC11 coming around the corner, pricing on the 10 becomes very tempting. But I might be switching carriers from AT&T to Verizon, so I need to know if there's any difference now between the phones, or if they're all 'multi-carrier' at this point. IOW, do I need to look for a specific Verizon-variant or AT&T-variant, or is there no difference anymore?
Thanks in advance!

Verizon one is a CDMA variant, it supports most but not all of the Unlocked version LTE bands. Also you're at the mercy of VZW for software updates (they haven't even updated to Nougat yet).
On the other hand, the Verizon variant works with all their network features (e.g advanced calling) out of the box. To get the Unlocked version working on the VZW network, you'd have have s-off first and flash new radios. This isn't difficult to do, but beware of the added cost of having to S-off.
So then there are, in fact, two variants - CDMA for Verizon and GSM for AT&T. Correct?

Yes but the GSM one (referred to as U.S Unlocked) is not make specifically or only for AT&T, if that's what you mean. It's sold by HTC for use on any gsm network.
I believe there is also a version from Sprint that is a CDMA variant.
Edited my original post to say the Verizon variant doesn't support all of the Unlocked version LTE bands.

So what you're saying is that the radio can operate on all bands, and I could theoretically buy a 'Verizon' model, re-flash the radio, and it becomes a fully functional AT&T model?
I'm asking, because back in the day, the radio hardware was different. Ive flashed ROM and radio combinations for my Inspire/Desire and M7. My present M9 is a bit of a disappointment, only because I'll never again buy a phone with a camera that lacks OIS. Hence my interest in the M10.
Unless, of course, the purported HTC11 us a world-beater, but truthfully, I'm not confident.

yes. You see lots of verizon users converting their unlocked to verizon or the other way round.
You just flash the HTC US Unlocked RUU, not just the radio. Supercid and set the mid to US unlocked.
You need s-off though..additionally it needs to be on Marshmallow. temp root on vzw nougat got patched and sunshine s-off won't work anymore.

Got it. I did Sunshine for my M9, and it was great. I'll wait to see what HTC does with the upcoming 11, and unless it's incredible - and worth $400 more than a NIB 10, I'll probably go with the 10 to save money and get a camera I can live with. It's hard to imagine what not having OIS can do to your pictures.

Because I'm getting closer to making a purchase, I'd like to touch on this one last time.
Since AT&T didn't carry the M10, I'm forced to look for a Verizon, Sprint or Tmobile variant. I prefer something New In Box, but it seems they're hard to come by, the best condition (and most adorable) being from Sprint.
But if I can't unlock and flash an RUU that would enable the phone to be fully functional on AT&T, it would wind up being an expensive paperweight.
So, any last assurances that this will work out no matter which variant I buy would really put my mind at ease.
Thanks again!

Hi,
I was in your situation and finally pulled the plug on Verizon variant. It came with an OS that is patched by Verizon blocking Sunshine S-OFF/Unlock. But browsing around XDA & google search, I found the steps and spent some $ to S-OFF/Unlock. Long story short, finally I ended up with HTC 10 Verizon variant converted to Developer Edition.
1) Will Verizon variant work with AT&T out of box? Yes, but LTE didn't work for me. I set bands to Global to get 4G. One thing I observed was unable to do OS update. I didn't invest much time on OS update because I was prepared to convert phone to unlocked well before purchase.
2) Which variant of HTC 10 is best? Unlocked if you can get good condition phone within budget. Else, refer point #1.

2) Which variant of HTC 10 is best? Unlocked if you can get good condition phone within budget. Else, refer point #1.

Seems the best price on FleaBay is about $430 with no warranty, but HTC has them for $499 brand new direct, probably because the Ocean is to be released in about three weeks.
I wonder if it makes sense to wait for the price to drop further, or buy now with a direct purchase in the hope of getting price protection and/or a warranty.
Does HTC include any warranty when buying from them?

It came with an OS that is patched by Verizon blocking Sunshine S-OFF/Unlock. be aware that it will just work on the verizon variant, when it is running marshmallow. temp root is patched on verizon when it is running nougat, means only way to s-off would be a javacard/mail in service handled by @jcase for example.
