Why get AT&T version when T-mobile variant can be sim unlocked for $5 - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Title says it all. I'm running a 851 T-mobile variant with TWRP and AOKP (new rom posted today) on it. Same bands and LTE works perfect. So the question stands why don't you AT&T owners sell yours and do the same? More development is going on since the bootloader is already unlocked and the more using one version the better for development as well in my eyes.
Maybe there is a specific reason but what am I missing?

I'm on Sprint and paid 99 for my phone. That's the only reason.

Makes sense not switching carriers, and sprint is CDMA not GSM so wouldn't work regardless. Threads more toward the AT&T owners and all the Bootloader Bounty chatter....

Got ya. Us Sprint guys are in the same boat. If they succeed in an unlock I'm definitely gonna donate if they don't charge anything for it.

Well AT&T is the better network hands down so there's that and if someone didn't think about bootloaders and development before purchasing chances are they don't need or want to root so there's 2 really good reasons why not to sell an AT&T G3 for the same exact phone on another network. That and also that its the same exact phone on another network.

I did it, mine 855P is the same as international 855 but with LTE from Mexico and USA so I sold it and bought a T-Mobile just for the same price =D and I still have my wireless charger that came with my 855P + an upgrade from 16gb/2gb RAM to 32gb/3gb RAM, a good deal.

Well that exactly what i did had the 850 and sold it on ebay and got the 851. 851's are cheaper actually. Still on AT&T network, agree its the better network hands down. If I chose to sell this it can go either ATT or T-mobile and works on LTE for both.
I guess i don't see your argument at all..

That's really not a terrible idea, lol. I friggen hate having this locked bootloader on my 850. Does the TMobile variant have the EXACT same bands as the AT&T one?
My other option is to just sell this stupid thing and buy a Nexus X when it comes out.

Do it, I made money actually. And you can literally download the IMEI unlock app on Google Play (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.servtified.unlock_lg_g3&hl=en) and pay 5 dollars to have it working on AT&T LTE in the matter of minutes. You do need to add your APN info for ATT but that''s it, works awesome!
Yes it has the exact same bands identical.

Not an argument, actually a reason to be satisfied with their purchase is that its on AT&T. I'm on T-Mobile but I don't defend their service, just went through them to lease the G3 and not pay outright for it. Going back to Straight Talk soon since I already SIM unlocked it. I would hope that a normal non obsessed person would consider all their options for US variants and not go through the headache of switching carriers for the exact same phone and sell the other. Not everyone cares about unlocking phones, some people are satisfied with simply having them, I'm not one of those people, but they do exist.

Why would you assume that? I've seen plenty of posts by users running stock unrooted devices. Just because its not unlocked doesn't mean people don't have a passion for development.

Getting off topic, the point of the thread was for those who are on AT&T and want a unlocked bootloader. I dont think some people are aware of the logical move, and that both versions have the same bands.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus coming to T-Mobile and AT&T *CONFIRMED*

http://www.usatoday.com/tech/columnist/edwardbaig/story/2011-11-17/samsung-galaxy-nexus/51269246/1

Actually it said
"But my test version, provided by Google just a day ago, relied on a T-Mobile SIM card tapping into an HSPA + network."
Which sounds more like it would be sold by tmobile at least.
I could be wrong though.
It's been posted elsewhere that the GSM version works on those networks. I read the article as simply meaning that the test model the reviewer was given was gsm, not lte.

Though I'd love for that to be the case, I really don't see how that is any indicator that T-Mo will be picking it up and selling it themselves. All that the above quote tells us is that the HSPA+ model is compatible with T-Mo's airwaves.
This thread is incredibly badly titled, given the huge assumption made by the OP :\
Thanks for the enormous cocktease.
I went to my Tmobile store and asked when they might get the Galaxy Nexus. The manager told me that Tmobile was not going to get this phone in their stores but it would be sold at Best Buy at some point. I went to Best Buy and asked them and of course they knew nothing about it. Why do they want to make it so hard for me to buy the darn phone? Makes no sense.
Close this misleading redundant thread !
This is very selfish of me but I hope it doesn't come to T-mobile. I want to buy this unlocked from overseas and use it with T-mobile and my legacy data plan. If T-mobile starts carrying it, they might end up filtering the device and force me to buy their more expensive, Android-compatible data plan.

Engadget was able to use both Tmo and AT&T SIMs successfully. Just thought I'd share. It shouldn't surprise anyone though considering the radios support both on paper. At this point, it would be nice to see when ANY carrier in the US will be selling this phone.

think of it this way.. is it REALLY a Nexus with bloatware? not me. its a galaxy phone

I'm Getting the GNexus, but..

I currently have a T-Mobile(Nexus S) and Sprint(SII) line. I want to get an iPhone sooner or later, but waiting until the 5 comes out. So I'll have it on my Sprint line. For my T-Mobile line, I'm considering the idea of porting to Verizon for the Galaxy Nexus. But I'm hearing the Verizon version is getting the lock down treatment?
I'm going to keep my number, no matter what. The price of the line is the not the issue(work covers it). Also, the data plan is a non issue since I would get unlimited data with Verizon if I did switch. Should I expect the usual ROM fiesta for the Verizon version of the Galaxy Nexus like I'm used to with my Nexus One or S on T-Mobile? Or will it be different this time around? And I'm hearing you actually can get Wallet on the Verizon Nexus?
sorry to burst your bubble but Verizon no longer offers any unlimited data plans unless you're grandfathered in. And yes I heard the same things thats why I'm getting the unlocked international version on T-mobile USA
The Verizon version will be unlockable just like the GSM version.

Unlockable as in easy as pie rooting, si? Or you mean it has more frequencies/bands to work on other networks? I'm assuming the first one.
Just as a recommendation, look into porting your number to Google Voice. I did a few months back and it's just great to not have to worry about porting my number ever again.

There is no such thing as a "standard" Verizon phone. That they are doing a "Nexus"-type phone at all seems absurd.

Thank you, that was one of my questions! And damn..
Also: As referred before in this topic by Knolly, porting your number to Google Voice..
So if I port my number to Google Voice, how would it work? If someone calls that number, and I'm not on wifi/3G/any internet connection, would I still get calls? Will my calls only go through internet, or it just forwards to my carrier number?

No idea what bad ESN means but you can't use a Verizon Nexus on T-Mobiles network. CDMA phone on a GSM network will not work.
No, pretty sure you hot confused by the penta-band part.
That's just for GSM frequencies.
The Verizon gnex is a different model number too, its the i515 and the GSM is the i9250.
I'm not 100% certain it won't work but I'm 99% certain.
Maybe someone else can second that for me.
Can you sell it on again?
EDIT: I see someone already posted and verified it before I posted this! Me derpsta!
Yes a verizon cdma phone will not work on a T-mobile gsm network. They are completely different networks. Now you may be able to flash the phone to work on another cdma carrier like boost or metro pcs. You would need to buy a european gsm version of the galaxy nexus to use it on t-mobile.

Not to pour salt on your wounds or anything, but here in Canada, BNIB Galaxy Nexuses are ~$450. $300 seems a bit high for such a fatal defect in the phone. Maybe this is Canadian pricing as all of our carriers sell the phone.
Hope you can somehow get some money back for it.

Yeah, there are a lot of them. Besides several different Blackberries, off the top of my head, I know that Verizon has had the Touch Pro 2, Droid 2 Global, Droid Pro, Droid 3, Droid Incredible 2, and the iPhone 4S. I know Sprint has also had several CDMA/GSM devices as well.
I really wish Verizon's Galaxy Nexus had been a world phone with GSM capabilities, but it's not. Then it would be absolutely perfect for me. But up until this point, Verizon hasn't released a LTE phone that also has a functioning GSM radio for global use. Some of them (Droid Bionic, Droid Razr) have a GSM radio (one of those CDMA/GSM combo chips), but the GSM portion doesn't actually function. There were some rumors awhile back that the GSM capabilities might possibly be enabled later, but I never saw where things went beyond rumor.
Don't you people know better to ask your questions here first before spending your money?
At least the seller was up front about the bad ESN. Now wonder if he was the one who stole the device, lol.

Probably covered already... but no, this will not work. Ever. You bought a paperweight. Could've bought a GSM model for $100-$150 more.
Its amazing that you didn't research before buying, and you spent $300 on a bad ESN phone w/o a plan on what to do with it. A simple 5 minutes on Google would have given you the answer.

USA GSM

I flashed Omni today and just because I was bored downloaded Telinfo and popped my straight talk sim in. Booted up, switched to Lte/gsm auto, added the APN and BAM it worked. Nothing else, no build prop mod, nothing. No LTE though just H+ but it worked great. Anyone know why it worked as soon as I installed? Clean install BTW.
I've seen people say this also works with the CM11 nightlies and PA for our LS980. It's very annoying how we have to get through such hurdles to get gsm working on stock roms though because clearly we can use US GSM features on our ls980s but sprint and lgs software is making it painful.

But by default, Sprint's unlock is only to use on international GSM networks, they still lock out local GSM carriers. You might as well use the tricks/mods etc folks are currently using at the moment to unlock for USA GSM carriers.

If you don't need lte you're probably fine with Verizon on att. However wait to hear what others have to say
