[Q] Note 2 Massive Battery Drainage Issue - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I owe a Note 2 N7100 with stock ROM Android 4.4.2. I have only 3G enabled round the clock with sync enabled. I use third party app to manage the screen brightness automatically for lower down the power consumption. Since past few weeks I am noticing that the battery is being drained very fast and resulting into a backup of 10-11 hrs in standby condition with no phone calls at all.
I used both the in-built and Gsam battery monitoring utilities to find out the cause but couldn't tracked it down. Can anyone here will help me out with the root cause of the drainage problem by analysing the snapshots ?

S4 Mini Battery life

Hi all fellow forum members! It was about time to retire my old Galaxy S2, and i decided to buy a S4 Mini. About the same size, better specs and everything. But i dont like the battery life at all. I dont think its normal for my battery to discharge 20% over 8 hours at night. Does anyone have the same problem? I have been trying different approaches. I installed Snapdragon BatteryGuru, put the phone on power saving mode all the time, even switched 3G off, although without 3G there seems to be an improvement, but I'll let you know how's that going. So my concern is that i might have a faulty device.. or software.. idk.. when i had crazy discharge syndrome on my S2 i just changed the kernel and/or the ROM. Any advice or opinions on the battery life of the S4 mini will be welcomed and appreciated!
I don't have too many battery problems, I guess. My phone has been off the charger for around 10 hours - and the battery has dropped to 85% - which I think it OK. I've sent some text messages, checked e-mails, used WhatsApp and had a few phone calls, not exceeding 10 minutes in total. Oh, and the GPS is on 24/7 for now, but I've just got the phone rooted, so this will not be the case any longer. The phone says it still have some 7½ hours left - which wouldn't be enough for an "all nighter" tonight.
I have disables many of the push notifications, which might be the reason why I think it's a fair battery life so far. I used to have the SGS2 as well, which lasted around the same as this phone I reckon. The biggest hog is the Google Services/Framework that takaroundes up 25% of the battery usage at the moment.
I have though of having getting an extra battery for this phone, as it's always nice to have one charged.
My I9195 uses about 3% during night (7 hours, 3G data and wifi off). Try to use an app to see wakelocks used on your device, e.g. Wakelock Detector or Better Battery Stats - they might provide you with some hints to apps that keep your mini from deep sleep, which can cause the battery drain.
Sent from my GT-I9195 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
If it's an I9195, can you try to disable NFC and see if it improves?
My biggest drain is the screen. The device lasts about as long as my friend's S2 (we were playing a coop game together) and then surfed the net over 3G for a while.
We both scrambled to look for a nearby charging socket at almost the same time
Thanks for your replies guys! I will try those apps and report back. Wakelock already found one of my apps that has awaken the phone 1200 times.. shieeeeeeeet.. hopefully now that I have disabled it things will go better..
Hi all! I have found the source of my battery drain. It's Google location services. Turns out it's a common problem on android 4.2.2. I tutned off Google location an I my phone drained 2% over 8 hours. Sync, wifi and 3g were also turned on. There is a fix over at the nexus 4 forums, but it requires root and I don't know if it will work on our galaxies. If you have root, google nip wakelock fix, try it and report back.
I had battery problems on my s4. Turns out it was the SD card. Removed it and battery improved. In the end I had to change it for a new one.

Which one did you use? Sandisk 32GB?
I got an S4 mini for my gf with that card and it has terrible battery life.
The battery drained from 100% at 7 in the morning to 15% at 5 in the afternoon...
That's surely not normal...
Edit:
I noticed that the "media" service took up almost as much cpu time and power as (active for 1,5 hours) as the mobile connection.
I suspect, that some corrupt media files or whatever kept the service alive, which tried to scan the DCIM folder over and over again.
I checked the SD Card which was full of almost 5GB of old pictures pictures which for some reason couldn't be deleted because of "unknown errors".
So I took the SD Card out and put it in a card reader, to back up the files. Then I deleted the files, put the card back and formated the card.
Then I copied only some of the new pictures back into the DCIM folder... I'll see tomorrow if that helped.
Battery Drain
Hi iconata,
Can you let me know how to "disable" Google location services, which you observed as the source of battery drain? I believe I have disabled it but the battery drain issue still persists.
And FYI - the following is the message I wrote to Samsung and am waiting for their test to validate the result of my S4 Mini. Based on what Samsung told me, the Safe Mode calls out same phone settings as Factory Default, but it seems the following test cases did reveal different resutls from what Samsung told me...
Message to Samsung

Hi,
Thanks for advising to check battery under Safe Mode. The following is the 3 test cases I have done but I still have BIG battery drain issue with my S4 Mini.
All the test cases were performed under same conditions:
1. 3G on
2. Power Save Mode on
3. Standby for 8 hours overnight, from 12:00am ~ 8:00am
Test Case-1: All the extra apps installed
- Battery drain: 3% per hour (as I already reported)
Test Case-2: Safe Mode; long press volume-down key, with Safe Mode shown at lower-left corner on desktop
- Battery drain: 0.7% per hour
Test Case-3: Factory default settings; reset to Factory Default setting; all the data were deleted and no extra apps were installed; the phone was back to the original Factory default setting
- Battery drain: 2.9% per hour
Test Case-1 and Test Case-3 almost came with same battery drain issue at same drop rate, so those extra apps installed for Test Case-1 shouldn’t have contributed to this battery drain issue so significantly. However, looks like Safe Mode and Factory Default were very different, although you thought the conditions of the 2 should be same.
I still have battery drain issue even after rolling back to Factory Default Settings, and I cannot live with Safe Mode. Please help.

Hi pudin! You can turn off Google location services from maps app. Go to settings->google location settings and uncheck allow Google to use your location. And to further improve that you can turn gps off, and turn it on when you need to. Yesterday I decided to root my phone because greenify was asking for root permission and everybody was putting the good word for that app. Turns out it's a total croc... you can hibernate downloaded apps, but you can't do the same with pre installed. 0 use. Further more I started to receive an annoying notification that my phone's security has been compromised and it needs to reboot. Got angry, downloaded an official firmware from sammobile, preinstalled, turned google location services off and got this pretty decent battery life. Screenies are below, feel free to post your thoughts. Please note that I keep BaterryGuru and PowerSave on at all time.
Battery drain
Thanks for prompt feedback iconata! Now I can confirm the Google location services have been disabled on my S4 Mini. Also, I don't enable GPS unless I need it so those battery consumption numbers were tested without GPS running in the background. I got the call from Ssmaung tonight telling me my phone consumes more power than what they tested, so I'll return it to Samsung for further diagnostic tomorrow. Will keep you posted if any update.
BTW, I'm not that kind of guy brave enough to root my phone like you guys...
im having 3% battery drain over night
using 2 sims.
wifi off
gps off
powersaving off
Network mode: sim1 GSM/WCDMA (auto), sim2 GSM
here are the screens

battery drain during standby
Hi,
Checked the image you posted and it looks like you were still doing something such as making calls and playing game over night. Your 3% power consumption per hour is similar to mine, but in my case Cell Standby and Device Idle are the 2 major items consuming the power the most over night, when the phone really enters the standby mode. Try to have your phone enter the standby mode without doing anything over night and check if the result is still the same.
strange thing... my battery was showing 16% left.. and went dead..

that screen on over night wasn't me, today ill remove apps and try to get a clean start not from a day use
New FW update that improves battery drain
In coincidence I got notified of a FW update just yesterday night, one day before I sent my phone into Service, and it did improve battery drain significantly, from 3% to just 1% per hour over night after I checked the phone this morning. You guys may want to check the update as well, and I'll test my phone again tonight.

Which firmware?
I flashed the pre-rooted MG4 (over the stock MG4) yesterday, wiped the phone and froze all the samsung bloatware stuff.
That thing is still draining about 4-6% per hour while just lying around untouched. The phone is in power saving mode.
new test factory reset, all bloatware removed, just whatsapp is installed

I still have 1.7% battery drain per hour I think is still bad
GMS arena seems to be the only site mentioning that issue:
Unfortunately the higher than average battery drain in stand-by mode prevented the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini from getting an impressive overall endurance rating. Even so it did more than well and if Samsung improves the stand-by time with future firmware updates, it might be one of the longest-lasting smartphones on the market.

[Q] Battery drain on stock 4.4.4 / rooted / unlocked / doomkernel

Up to now I'm happy with my Z1C.
But in the last weeks the battery drain went up.
Before that I could get a day and a half to two days of use , I am a moderate user during the day.
Most of the time wifi is off, 4g is off but bluetooth is on, day and night.
Before I had bluetooth turned off when not in the car.
But because I bought a Smartband talk I switched bluetooth to on without turning it off again.
Up to last week the battery was draining faster because of the bluetooth use but it was still good enough for me.
The last weeks / months I downloaded a lot more music on the external card and switched USB use to MSC so I could use it in my car. I listened to music in the car when driving to and from my workplace (1 hour drive single way).
Because it was charging in the morning and in the evening I did not notice any abnormal behavior.
Before I started to use the phone as a mediaplayer in the car I could get 1.5 to 2 days.
When using it as a mediaplayer this did not change, probably because of the charging in the car
Now I switched from workplace and stopped listening to music in the car.
Now my phone lasts for 0.8 up to 1 day max.
When looking at the battery stats it seems to me the mediaserver was eating up a lot.
So I deleted all data from the phone and I did a reset to factory settings. I also removed 80% of the music on the external sd card.
But even then I get a battery drain from 30-35% in about 7 hours time during the night.
I'm running again with only necessary apps installled.
So for the time being no xposed modules, no smartband talk and only switching bluetooth on when using the phone in the car.
But the problem does not seem to be solved.
I have a weak signal at home (1 bar), I had a weak signal at my previous workplace (1 bar) and I have a weak signal at my current workplace (als 1 bar max).
I wonder what is eating the battery so fast?
Is it the weak signal?
Is it because I charged the battery too much (every morning and evening in the car)?
Is my battery dying?
Is it related to an app (multiple apps)?
I have this phone since april 2014.
I am on 14.4.A.0.108 / unlocked / rooted with the doomkernel v22.
So can anybody tell me what monitoring app to use and how to interprete the results from such an app?
I'm in stamina mode.
Estimated lifespan battery is at 2 days when an actual battery percentage of 42%.
I already have betterbatterystats but I do not know if this is the best app for monitoring.
Is there something else I have to look into?
Today I was trying to get my settings in the state I need them to be and when looking at power management / battery usage I can see the screen is the biggest battery user but that seems normal in the current situation.
What about deep sleep, how to monitor this?
How to identify apps being the biggest battery consumers?
What about the apps in manage notifications, there's a lot of them, will it help disabling some / a lot of them?
I really like to get back to charging the phone only once every 2 days.
Any help would really be appreciated.

Better Battery Stats is you friend, it will help you locate what it depleting your battery and keeping your phone awake, as well as listing the deepsleep times .
If you have a rooted phone download Disableservice from the playstore. Reading your post you use a fitness tracker so disabling all of these might not work, but it's worth a go.
Once it's installed, open the system tab, open Google Play Services, then untick (disable) the following:
ConfigFetchService
FitnessSyncAdapterService
GoogleLocationManagerService
GoogleLocationService
NetworkLocationService
ProximitySettingInjectorService
UserPresenceService
WearableControlService
WearableService
WearableSyncService
then reboot your phone.
Disabling these from running should have no impact on your phone, it doesn't for me, and will give you 10-15% more battery life.
Turning of sync on your Gmail also saves a lot of battery, especially if you live in a poor reception area, as it polls the Gmail server every few minutes. Likewise sync on your normal emails. It means you have to check yourself to see if you have any mail, but will put a few extra hours on your battery.
The other thing that extended my battery life was deleting the cached data. Settings\Storage and hold down on Cached data until you get a popup asking you to delete it. I know it sounds bizarre, but it really worked.
Try putting a stock kernel back in for a few days and see if that makes a difference.

Battery Fast Drain

Hello,I am using Zenfone 2 16GB, 4GB ram . My battery life is bad every 3 minute %1 drain fastly ...
I can see screen time maximum 4 hour or maybe a little more for 4 hour.Screen Light %0 wifi is closed and everything is closed no working program no working bluetooth or nfc etc..I tried everthing for better battery life but ı cant solve this problem ı bought my phone one mounth ago and ı see everyday android is is using %45-50 battery.I never opened auto screen lighter or 4g or ntc. But drain, fastly every 3 minute %1 drain.my firmware is 2.20.40.58 and how can solve this problem can you help me please
To help improve battery life
1. Please ensure to turn off 'Wifi Scanning always available.'
2. Please also see the following information showing 8 ways to extend the ZenFone 2 battery Life. http://www.asus.com/us/support/FAQ/1012981/
3. If still no improvement then recommend performing a hardware reset including cache wipe partition and try steps 1 & 3 again. http://www.asus.com/us/support/FAQ/1011956/
Sincerely,

None of those ASUS official 8 ways do solve the root cause of the battery drain issue.
So far I find most interesting way that may really double your battery life is to activate the "Intel Deep Sleep Mode"
Please check at the link (sorry too new to post a link)

Hi
I still dare to activate my Zenfone2 deep sleep mode following the process.
Guess what happened? I have no problem with my proximity sensor nor any issue with ZenMotion after 1 week tests.
And the battery saving effect of this deep sleep mode is working like a champ.
I have not yet calculated scientifically but the deep sleep mode at least *doubled* my battery life, which means before activating deep sleep mode I need to recharge every day of even 1/2 day. Now my Zenfone2 could work without charging for more than 1 day or even 2 days under normal use.
Now I have removed all apps related to battery saving like amplify, greenify, battery doctors, etc.
and I don't even need to close any app in startup management and the deep sleep still works and extend my battery life up to 2 days recharging cycle under my normal usage.
Although I find a side(not bad) effect so far is that the file transfer will be "deep slept" (i.e. backup progress stopped at the % where your screen turns off) and it seems the moving activity in the background is deactivated when screen off. But this is not a issue to me as I expect all apps and activities that out of my focus should not keep draining my battery. I can achieve this by stopping unkown/unecessary wakelocks through "xplosed + amplify" but I don't need them anymore as deep sleep mode seems does the same for me.
One thing really does matter to me is that will all notification still works? My test so far shows that by activating the deep sleep mode will not disable any wifi nor 4G signal nor any notification that the apps should normally give you alarms/warnings, especially wake up alarms.
I'd like to really really thank you for your advise.
I think this "intel deep sleep mode" is really a total soultion to the Zenfone 2 battery drain issue and worth a try, at least for me so far.
I don't know if this process also may apply to non-intel cpu android phones which also have the andorid os battery draining bugs.
--
can you tell me the steps to enable deep spleep mode?
I am a noob bro  but the following tweaks will certainly help u.
I use auto start manager to manage almost all except a few apps like whatsapp and truecaller etc.
Disable wifi scanning and wifi network notification in wifi advanced settings. Our phone's brightness is too much even on the lowest setting so keep it around 25-30% for lower battery drain from display.
Watch out for wakelocks, read the battery graph. I prevented truecaller and playstore from waking up device.
Turn off gps when not using.
Disable asus built in bloatware and certain google apps that u don't use e.g. i dont use google plus, talkback, hangouts and even chrome since these run in background and drain battery.
Google app is also a big culprit. I personally don't use google app and disabling it will make a big difference.
Then use data usage in mobile manager for further tweaks. Avoid 4g/3g when idle.
Mine is a 2gb z00a and i get a decent backup of around 1.5 days with normal usage with calling whatsapp browsing. Intel processor is a battery vamp and this fact can't be changed.
And not to forget after every ota update perform a cache wipe to get rid of conflicting data from previous firmware.
And this intel deep sleep mode is new to me..will also try it.

An app to show idle % per hour battery drain?

Hi, I have a OnePlus 3 with LineageOS, I also used to have the ElementalX kernel on which I enabled the battery monitor and I could see the battery drain percentage/hour in real time, at first it was 1,5%/h idling which is already terrible (for ref i used my schoolmates nexus, which had 0,5%/h and also googled a bit) but then it got worse and worse until it got to 3%/h so I decided to clean flash the rom and leave the stock kernel on... And that has left me with awful OCD about my battery since I can't see the drain in real time anymore (Previously I used the EX Kernel Manager which works only with that kernel)
So I need to know 2 things, does anyone know why my battery drain could have been acting out? And more importantly, please recommend me some apps that can display the idle battery drain in real time...
Thanks in advance.
Ex kernel mangaer works with all kernels. You could use accubattery as well, it does have a similar option too. Idle drain needs to be checked on long runs, for example if you use your phone for texting and turn your screen on/off many times, a battery monitor app could not be that accurate because when it scales the percentage used by screen off it could register the amount of power used by the screen when it was on ( but it wasn't register as screen on because the 1% dropped when the screen was off even if you used that 1% when the screen was on). I hope it's clear enough. English is not my native language and it's hard to explain it.

Question Poco F4 5G phone idle battery drain

hi, has anyone experienced the battery drain when the phone is idle?
last night i've left the phone on 20-22% battery and when i woke up - the phone was turned off because the battery reached 0%...
when it charged - the idle battery consumption was off the wall...
device is about a month and a half old...
i'm using stock MIUI (latest, EU), not rooted
phone is slightly debloated via adb fastboot tool...
phone doesn't use 5G network at home or ever, mobile data is turned off when i'm home
i just can't figure out what is happening...
thanks in advance
Debloated too much I think. Have the same issue when I have Samsung Phone and used adb debloater
not sure about that...
i didn't touch any crucial Xiaomi apps, just recommended ones and never had any bebloat battery drain issues on any device which was debloated or even rooted
update:
last night i left the device with 38% battery, just to see what would happen
in the morning, 8 hours after - it still had 35% charge strange...
note: in the meantime, i adjusted some apps not to work in the background if not needed and uninstalled (almost) never used Google Lens (which i've installed few days ago to try something)
didn't touch any battery settings for common social and messaging apps that i use (Facebook, fb messenger, google messages)
so, maybe the culprit was either google lens or some of those adjusted apps - or the device doesn't read the battery well when under 30%... i'll see what will happen in the next few days...
@60nine Settings > Battery > Battery Use (check "Daily battery usage chart")
Look there if you see any app that has consumed much battery.
you seriously think that i don't already know how to check this? (how do you think i've found that the idle was draining the battery?
no suspicious apps there, idle battery consumption was at the top...
Sorry, I overlooked that you have already wrote it is the idle drain and not a specific app
no problem
