[Q] CyanogenMod 11 is killing my battery. Help! - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3

I've looked all around for any thread similar to this - couldn't find it.
Long story short. I rooted my phone and installed CM11 (Sept 14). My battery used to last around 30 hours. Now I'm lucky to get 8 or 9. Without any use, I lose around 40% during the night (7 or 8 hours). I used to lose 7 or 8%.
Is anyone having the same issue?

Go to the battery tab in settings and find out what is using the most energy. You can also use greenify to monitor usage.

Or try diff kernel..

what are your governor settings, and clock settings?
You can use Better Battery Stats to track down what is causing the drain.

Clock is stock, governor settings are at "interactive". I got Better Batery Stats. "Android OS" is draining my system. There were a couple of modules mentioned. I was expecting a rogue app was eating up all processor cycles.
I downloaded the Deep Sleep widget. My phone had a 35% deep sleep time.
I'm pretty sure it's doing something all the time that is draining the battery...
So I installed DS Battery Saver Pro. All I can say is WOW. Battery drain went from 7% (on stock Galaxy Note 3) to 40% on CM11 to...
0% overnight / 97% Deep Sleep
That's right. 0%!!! I can't believe it! Battery life is so much better and performance is basically the same.
I guess something was keeping the phone awake with CM11, and DS Battery Saver Pro fixed it!

Okay, it seems like the app Greenify helps a bit but doesn't completely solve the problem. Try that and let me know what you think.

Not that this will help you, but I had the same issue. Normal usage would drain before the day was over...went to Tweaked 3.55 and problem went away, which sucks because I LOVE CM11 minus the camera...for some reason I think the camera is always better with stock based roms.

DS Battery Saver Pro only did so much. With normal usage my phone simply won't last a whole day. CM11 is killing it. I have nothing else installed...

Found it!
So, I found what was eating up the battery. The battery stats didn't help. DS only saved some of the battery at night. The phone was simply consuming obscene amounts of energy while on and every indicator seemed normal.
It was ART!
I went back to stock Touchwiz and hated my phone so much I was this close to selling it and getting a OnePlus. But I reinstalled CM11 and decided to add apps one by one to find out what was going on. Everything was fine and yesterday I finally enabled ART in the end. The phone wasn't any faster, but it went from spending 3-4% battery at night to 45%. And during the day, it dropped 1% every 2 of 3 minutes with light use.
So, there it is. Blame ART and never enable it on CM11 if you have battery issues.

[Q] Instant battery drops

Im getting some weird battery stuff, as well as the Android OS drain. If I restart my phone, once in a while It drops like 20-30%. i'll go from 46% to like 18%. I see the threads about slow draining, but mine seems to happen instantly sometimes (3 different times so far in a week), anyone have solutions? Got it from someone on ebay, can I still/should I RMA?
Someone posted a kernel fix in the international GSII forum, so we're either waiting for that to get ported over here or wait for samsung to release a fix. I have that same bug too. What percent r u getting on the Android OS? Mine is usually in the 60's.
Yeah I saw that thread, and I saw the 2 things causing it. Waiting for that fix I guess, hopefully it solves the big battery drops as well as the small draining. Mines pretty high, 30-50% I believe, and then cell reception takes 10-20% with LOS
That's alot better than mine. Although, I don't have that LOS problem. I'm running stock atm. Are u on a custom rom?
Running Starburst 1.5, stock was better for no LOS. But I like the customization on Starburst. Hopefully by the end of this week the kernel we be ported over.
Most likely a problem with the battery level algo and not an actual battery charge drop. It's probably showing the correct value after the reboot.
Using battery spy I was using like 12%-15% per hour, not even doing anything. Saw online that formating the SD card might help, just did, and now im using .8% per hour. The hell, something was scanning the SD card or something. Much better now, hopefully itll last 10-20 hours instead of 6 hours.
edit: so it went back up again. At .8% it will last 2 days+, but since the events keep taking the CPU, its draining it. I got it down to 4-8% by taking the SD card out. At least it will last a little longer. Cant wait for the fix, this baby will last days after.
Damn that sucks. I just formatted my card too cuz I was running out of options. Keep us updated tho.
so I think media scanner is draining, I downloaded rescan media root from android market and before I was draining at 12% per hour, but when I disable it with the app, it goes down to 5-6%. Anyone else try? Maybe thats something thats draining.
Oh btw have u tried turning off wifi? It only drained 6% after being off the charger for 9 hours. I havent touched the phone during that time span tho. Android os still in the 50s btw.

These are my overnight stats when I was sleeping. It's usually worse when wifi is on.

this is almost definitely correct. battery doesn't drop 15-20% because of reboot...the reading is wrong. Battery drivers have been bad on a few of the latest android phones. Just look at when your phone stays at 99% for the first 3 hrs of use each day...what, does it just get really inefficient in the afternoon because of food coma from lunch?

Trying now, seems to be charging faster too. I was mainly on wifi because cell standby was really high, keep getting LOS. But maybe I wont with wifi off now, and i'll see how battery does. ill keep you updated.
Still bad. Can only wait for the patches/fixes. 8 hours doing nothing almost. Sigh.
edit: sent to the galaxy support on twitter, see how that goes.

Hey man, I got one more tweak for u to try. I just rooted my phone w/ the latest zenomax kernel and Starburst 1.5. Download setcpu and create a profile for "screen off". Set it to 200-500mhz on demand. In theory, this should prevent 100% cpu utilization while the screen is off. I'm testing this myself atm, so I can't give u my battery stats yet.

Think I have the v3 version and 1.5 as well. I have setcpu set to 200-400 powersave. ive tried others and same. Suspend and events/0 keeping eating at the CPU. Thanks for the suggestions though.
figured i'd chime in here. i've had days where the battery was fine and days where the battery was absolute trash. it's happened on stock, and it's happened on root. but it almost always seems to coincide with LOS. the first picture is one of several instances where i've had pretty fast drain followed up by an instant dump in charge under normal use. it's strange how after the drop, it slowly works back up then levels off and drains normally. the 2nd pic is from today. i left my phone at home on accident when i went off to work, and when i returned, i had LOS and this battery stat. you can tell where i lost signal . the last pic is from yesterday while i had the phone at work all day and light use; a nice consistent drain.
FU battery drops and FML
Ok so i read all the posts in this thread and i understand theres a issue that effects the phone from even knowing what the battery % is. i had to post these though. i was at 47% then rebooted my phone. phone boots up and yehhh! woop woop 8% now mind you if you look at the graph it shows a nice constant cerve downward but steady because i was using my phone the entire time. now after the restart/batery drop of 40% i kept using the phone constantly but its funny how it took me over a hour of screen on to go from 8% to 5% !!!!! i bet to get from 5% to 1% it will take 2 more hours for sure. you can see the graph start to flatten out like its a super battery after the 40% drop because it didnt really drop to 8% !!! normally i wouldnt care since my phone battery last just as long, it just goes down really slow from 8%-1% but at 5% it auto dims screen and wont let me use my camera for the next 2-3 hours while i knock off the remaining "4%" of battery left. fml
Get Starburst v1.6. He removed DRM processes which should lower Android OS usage and thus battery draining. Plus with the LoStKernel, I haven't had any issues with losing signal since.
Also, use Titanium backup to remove running services that you don't need. I got rid of the stock email client, digital clock, media/social hub if you don't use those. They don't take up a lot of ram, but every little bit helps.
My battery life has improved after battery calibration. I suggest you calibrate if you didn't already so your battery usage graph may be more accurate. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the tips! I was wondering how you would calibrate the battery. Is it the same as wiping battery stats from CWM?

[Q] Battery Drain - Yet another whining thread - CM7.2

Hello all together
I'm browsing xda for a little more than a year now. You guys helped me a lot!
First I want to apology my english, I hope you understand what I want to say
Not a long time ago the battery of my WFS lasted up to 3 days (incredible if I think of it now).
That was with a self rooted stock rom and some changes (bravia, turboboost script, oc-kernel, etc.).
Out of nowhere I had problems with my calendar.sync.provider. Processes htc.bg and htc.bgp used the most of my battery (found out with Battery Mix).
I could watch the percent falling... Battery was getting very hot.
After i killed calendar.provider and calendar itself those bg-processes disappeared and all went back to normal.
Installed m1nd's rom, tried a lot of different settings, used calengoo instead of normal calendar (uninstalled the other)...
But battery life was never the same since then.
We also had a really rough winter and I was outside a lot. my battery began to drain faster. First I began to install apps like "auto wifi toggle" to stop that battery drain, after all I just bought a new battery this spring - 1500mAh.
But other than i expected - battery life did not increase. So I decided to install CM7.2 (wanted to do it anyway - great work btw!).
And guess what, nothing changed...
You will find some screenshots at the end... (did barely use the phone this 4 hours)
So what can I do? I'm desperate. The battery does not hold the whole day...
Please give me some tipps (if you have others than the general battery saving thread) or at least cheer me up
tl;dr: Phone works for 10h (mail, text, no phones, no games) - Changing battery & ROM does not fix battery drain...
Thank you in advance!
it happens to me too unfortunately, i charge it everyday or every 2 days
when i play a small mini game for a few minutes, battery drains like over 10% in a few minutes.

Please tell about that calibrating

Thing is, I charge my phone everyday. And I've been using CM7 or CM9, battery life never lasts more than a day. If it's only lasting 4-10 hours. Check your sync settings. Keep it only on 2G networks if using data. Get a battery saving application, in my opinion, it sounds like your using a lot of mobile data/wifi.

Battery Hardware Issue

Hello,
I received a AT&T Galaxy S III from Best Buy after my initial one broke. After I received the new one, I put CyanogenMod 10.1 on it and got horrible battery life. I bought new batteries to see if that was the issue and I got the same results. The battery would drop about drastically, a charge lasted about 2-3 hours with minimal use. I wiped my cache (a dalvik cache), cleared my phone, and installed SlimBean on it. After that I got the same results (I don't have a ton of background apps or anything). Should I assume this is a hardware issue since I am using new batteries and have tried two different ROMs? Is there anything I can do to fix this?
Thanks for your help!

There is an issue at the moment with recent cm10.2 based builds not going into deep sleep. Load the deep sleep widget and see if your phone is going into it. If not, you have this issue. See my other post for suggestions. (Turn off Location Sharing/Wifi and SystemUpdateService).

64% is good. It means its not the deep sleep issue. You want that percentage to be as high as possible. Deep Sleep is the lowest CPU state available while in standby. I'm battling an issue on Paranoid Android where I'm getting 1 - 2 % deep sleep.
Better Battery Stats will give you an idea if one of your apps is running out of control. But my immediate guess is that with 64% deep sleep you're running about right. What do you do in those 2-3 hours? What is your coverage like? Minimal signal may give you weird results. (Sorry, I have to wait 5 mins between posts)..

You have to give the phone a little time to settle out too. Any new installation of a ROM or new device takes a little while to build all the caches and work through the background syncing stuff until it settles out to low consumption. How's your cell service? When I have little to no reception my phone tears through battery life while it searches for signals. Wifi will do the same thing too, just to a smaller extent.
Let your phone get down to the point where it needs to be charged (<10%) and take a look at your battery stats in the system settings. Post your time on battery here, and also the top 3-4 things that are consuming your battery with the percentages. Click on the "screen" and let us know what your screen-on time is as well.
That's probably a good place to start.

G Pro Kitkat Battery hogs

is it just me or is the kitkat ROM really sucks----battery pretty well?
I also notice that the CPU usage does not drop to 20 percent idle but when I used other ROM (JB based) it becomes 5 percent.
RAM usage is good but I think it hogs the CPU. I used cpuz on measuring the cpu usage

Where can I get the JB rom for OGP?
For me, Android was best at JB and went backwards with KK.
Yes, I've noticed absolutely horrible battery life with KK. KK just feels like it is several different parts all just thrown together.
The only reason I think is that theoretically JB uses more battery is that the system uses more voltage than the kitkat. however, what's less voltage use if the CPU is always busy and wakeups are just everywhere.
Hi guys, maybe you could post in some battery stats so we could know more about whats draining your battery in particular and suggest some fixes. I've actually experienced the opposite with kitkat-battery life for me improved. There was even an instance that I got the phone to last 30 hours, with 5 hours, 48 mins. screen. On another instance I got 15 hours life and 5 hours 25 mins screen on. I just lost the screenshots as I had to reflash stock when i was doing some G3 mods., but nevertheless i could post some new ones.
I value batter life was well and i'm curious to see how yours could be improved too..

What a battery life. 15 hours screen time?
how can we accurately measure? because I only use CPU-Z and installed DS battery saver to save power. right now it only used 2% of my battery during the night. (from 1:45 - 5:50am)
I see. can you tell me what app should I use to determine CPU usage of each app/service?

No, my battery lasted 15 hours, and my screen-on time (total time i spent using the phone) was 5+ hours coz i basically used my phone then for gaming the whole day I suggest you download gsam battery monitor app (it also has a temperature_bat. Usage graph), as well as wakelock detector. Another alternative would be better battery stats. What you would need to observe would be the apps and wakelocks draining your battery both when you are using your phone, and also when its idle.
I also notice that battery capacity is 2A in which it should be 3.140A right?
this shows on kitKat but on jellybean, it's 3.140A again.
is there something wrong with the detection of battery capacity?

What happened was that in kitkat, the permisssions required to be able to access battery stat files changed. Thus, apps w/c could freely access the batter stats in JB cannot gain complete access in Kitkat. This is the case for some battery monitor apps w/c now have lesser accuracy in reporting battery. No worries though, as there are means to bypass this problem. If you have xposed you could install a module for this. Also, some apps like gsam battery monitor come with a separate root companion app. Once you install those batter stats will be accurate.
Here's a screenshot of my battery stats for today..might not be 5+ hrs of screen on as i did a lot of rebooting today (themed with g3 tweaksbox). Nevertheless, this is just to show that kitkat has the potential to provide good battery life. Also enclosed is a screenshot of one of the battery apps i use, gsam.
Hey everybody! I have some findings I absolutely must share so you can benefit as well.
I've been doing some tinkering and I've find a way to significantly increase battery life on the OGP.
First thing you'll want to do is put your phone into airplane mode.
Second, turn your screen brightness down as low as it will go. I mean, all of the way down.
Third, don't play any games on your phone.
Try those three tweaks and see what kind of battery improvement you get.
Unfortunately, Camera has stopped.

Just so you know, first my cell radio and wifi were both on the whole time. Second, i was on auto brightness the whole time. Third, i played clash of clans as you see in there.
If you have not done this already, adjust your cpu to save your battery juice. Set the cpu governor to powersaver or interactive mode if you just using the phone to send msg and make calls. I let my phone run on msm-dvcs and when I'm not plug in. Check out ROM toolbox if you're rooted. Seriously folks, instead of complaint about how much the roms suck the juice, try these different ways to see they make any difference for you.

Lineage OS battery drain

Hi!
I've been running Lineage OS for about a week now and I'm experiencing poor battery life. I get around 2 hours of screen-on-time and I'm not doing anything demanding other than browsing and social networking and I have the settings on Efficient in the power menu. I feel like stock was a good 50% better on battery life than LOS.
I also noticed that LineageOS System, Android OS and the Phone Idle processes eat up around 30% of the battery.
I didn't install any battery draining apps and I'm running the latest version of everything.
I tried reseting app preferences but it didn't help.
I also want to note that standby time is amazing. If I don't use the device the battery level stays the same while it's sleeping. When I wake it, it loses 2-3% immediately though. It seems that it only loses battery quickly when the screen is on.
Can someone please help? Is this normal battery life on LOS?

Ah ok have a good career w/ android.. bye
Hey.
I'm using the latest LineageOS same as you, on my LG G2 D802 32GB and having the same issue as you. If I leave my phone on table for a night, it usually drains 1 or 2%, but if I start using facebook or facebook messenger, or just browsing the system settigs, or just ANYTHING, the battery percentage suddenly starts to count down, like 1% every minute or so.
So i've tried stock LineageOS kernel and Lambda kernel aswell (most advanced, latest kernel for G2 atm), rooting and using Greenify, turning everything down to minimal, underclocking GPU and CPU frequencies, changing govenors, battery saving modes on, screenbrightness to minimal without adaptive, everything syncing off, bluetooth, gps, and wifi is usually off, but nothing really helped and it's been buggering me for a week. Compared to the Stock 4.4.2 or 5.0.2, the battery is half as good. Also, I've been reading posts and I've noticed that not everybody have this issue, because some people experience really good battery - or they just say that -, on the same phone modell. I've been thinking about reverting back to stock because of that, but I havent given custom roms like (crDroid or AICP, I'm torn between those two) a shot, but that not relevant to you because G3.
If I find a solution I'll let you know.
LineageOS doesn't have any battery draining bugs for me currently. Have you installed a custom kernel?
G3 D855 user here. Can confirm the same issue, with all nightlies I have used so far. Standby is OK, but it still drains faster than stock. When I use the phone though, that's when it begins to go down waaay too fast. One percent per minute or two tops, certainly at least 2x faster rate. Tried to solve it in many different ways, so far to no avail. Asked some people with D855 and lineage too and they had no issue. It's a mystery to me (btw I bought a new battery just recently)
Second that, same D855 with latest baseband 21C, i encounter same bizarre battery drain..

I'm glad I'm not alone then!
Same problem as everyone else.
Overnight lose only 1% per hour but using the phone it drains extremely quickly.
Look at this crazy battery history:
I've never had this issue on my other devices running CyanogenMod in the past.
Has anyone tracked this issue down to something in particular?
Phew, its not just me. Stock LOS nightlies, pick any... same issue as described by everyone above.
D855/32Gb etc and can not shake it. Wakelocks are all good, as meant to be, just screen on seems to destroy the battery. Have screen on adaptive brightness with around 50% brightness on slider in the first place.
Something is not quite right. Love every other aspect of LOS apart from the battery drainage.
I've got the issue too. I don'y know why but it starts to drain the battery quite fast during the usage of the phone. Any help will be appreciated.
I don't see an open bug unless anyone else has seen one:
https://jira.lineageos.org/browse/BUGBASH-167?jql=text ~ "G3"
https://jira.lineageos.org/browse/BUGBASH-17?jql=text ~ "D855"
There's also this bug:
https://jira.lineageos.org/browse/BUGBASH-364?jql=text ~ "battery"
which is similar to what happens to me, i.e. get to 30% and then suddenly shutdown.
I think this is the bug:
https://jira.lineageos.org/browse/REGRESSION-372
Clear caches!
I was having this issue, with Lineage OS as well as some others i tried based off CM. I would get better than stock battery life for a few weeks, then suddenly the battery would start draining in a few hours.
Booting to recovery and clearing all caches fixed this issue for me.

This is a hardware issue with the battery, not a software one. You need to replace your battery with an official one from a reputable source (careful, there are quite a lot of fakes around, so don't be tempted by saving a dollar).

This sounds like some app you're installing on your phone.

I'd generally think that, but I haven't installed any apps for weeks!

I had already tried this but no luck.
Could you please check your battery stats?
Does the percentage used equal the total of the individual apps?
In my case, it never does, e.g. 15% usage but only 3% used by apps.

Same for me - the numbers never add up. When this occours, I can watch the battery go from fully charged to 30% in an hour or two, but the battery usage meter doesn't show anything like that kind of usage.
I'd post a screenshot, but I've just taken my phone off charge and have no data as yet. I'll post one tonight - but since clearing the caches, mine is behaving at the moment, although I'm not getting the same all-day battery I was 6 weeks ago.
Same here
Also experiencing this issue on my 6P. Lineage OS system consumes the largest portion of my battery and I usually only get 1hr 50 minutes max of screen time. The phone also seems to die at minimum of 24 percent. Just shuts off. I no longer think this is a hardware issue either as other people seem to be experiencing this. (On a somewhat unrelated note, I also can't flash SuperSU in TWRP without it going into a LOS bootloop)
