What I meant was that if it works out of the box. There should be an option in WiFi settings for WiFi Direct.

Yes it has
Wifi Direct is a software feature that is present on the wireless chip. Most of the wireless chips that are released now have this. Using the Wifi Direct in the Wifi settings, we can connect to 2 different phones. But how to transfer files using stock Android is a mystery to me. I'm getting the expected speed while connected to a nexus 5. MY chip is the limiting factor here ?

Yes, same here. Can connect two devices. I too couldn't figure out about how to transfer files using stock android(without any apps).
I think app (like superbeam ) is a must to transfer files. But again, don't understand what's the role of stock android's wifi direct connection.

Just an update.. after some digging it turns out that wifi direct in ics is just an api atm so app developers need to make use of this seemingly overlooked feature

Hmm, I wonder if Android beam uses it?
No pure NFC with NDEF messages ... next semester at university i will be doing android develpoment .. if nothing is out by then i will have a go at making an app but it doesnt look to hard i would expect someone to have done one soon

WiFi direct work like this

Now go to your laptop open up wirless networks and do a scan
and hello there is a Phone now showing up click connect
now on your phone a message will pop up saying a computer is tring to connect and asking you to say ok or cancel
say ok
Now your laptop is connected
Now open up xplorer on your laptop click networks and you will have two showing and your phone will be one of them double click on the phone this open up the phone just like in mass storage mode
Now to go the other way eg phone to pc that is the tricky bit
as the stock brouser sucks on android
You need es file exploer and do a lan scan and the laptop will show as a name click it and a message will show on the laptop or it will just open up the shared folders section
It only works on windows 7

Northern, that didn't work for me, but my PC doesn't has got WiFi direct, so that might be a problem.
Anyways, I tried to use WiFi direct with my bother's SGS2, and we weren't being able to get it working properly. I tried the Android WiFi direct demo app, which was able to connect using WiFi direct, but I wasn't being able to send photo's. The S2 had an extra menu for configuring WiFi direct(TouchWiz)
Anyone that has got WiFi direct working on his Galaxy Nexus?

Well file expert needs an access point in order to transfer files and the phone that you want to transfer file must have file expert too.. which is just wireless sharing not wifi direct though..
My Sony Bravia got WIFI Direct too. I tried to connect my GN with it. TV did find the phone. Connected too. But then just kept dropping off the connection.
Did anybody tried it out with a TV?
I noticed it on my sister's GS2, tried it out, her phone can see mine, but i can't seem to find the wifi direct settings for my gnex.

as you can see, google/android gave us the api, but not the interface to manage this...
but released a piece o code to compile a demo app 'wifi direct'.... i do not have other wifi direct enabled device... and i don't tryied this yet... but, here is the sample:

Of course, this is a Nexus issue. I already tried Connectify and established a Hotspot, enabled WLan on Nexus but it didn't find it. I guess I can only connect to networks from my laptop but can not be getting connected?!

Did you setup adhoc mode in Connectify? If so, the Nexus cannot see adhoc wifi at the moment.

Ad-hoc support usually isnt available out of the box, but our good friends here at XDA can hack the wifi driver to make it work.

I do hope so because I'm waiting for it as well. In Gingerbread days, you just have to replace wpa_supplicant with an adhoc-enabled one. Hopefully someone can compile wpa_supplicant from ICS source and add adhoc fix.

I've got Vista. I tried Connectify, established a hotspot, but it wasn't found by the Samsung Nexus.
When rooting my phone, I installed pdanet for the drivers. I realized it had built in tethering over USB, tried it out, and it worked!

Any WiFi direct compatible device will be able to connect to another without the use of a router as a middleman.
Right now in order to do something like media transfer from my phone to my laptop, both have to be connected to my router. With WiFi Direct, I can connect directly to the laptop (provided that it also has WiFi Direct capability).
Think bluetooth, but faster, longer range, and more reliable.

Hey all, I ran into this problem earlier today while in class and was wondering if anybody has a good fix. The wifi signal in some of the rooms in some buildings here at school is relatively weak, so much so that my wireless card on my laptop has difficulty picking it up, but my phone can connect.
On my old iPhone, I used to be able to create a hotspot using Pdanet while connected to wifi, so I was not using any of my data. Do any android apps provide this or similar functionality?
Quick answer is no. I wanna say back in the day I did it with a root app.
You could use USB or Bluetooth to share the Wi-Fi internet access to your laptop

pdanet (foxfi) works on this phone (or at least is reported as working).

Happen to remember the name of that app? I am coincidentally rooted.
Pdanet does work, however it disables wifi before creating the hotspot so I cannot broadcast new wifi from existing wifi.
I use many file sharing apps like Sender & Share it. While it uses hotspot tethering for Sharing file, after recent update to 6.0 there is no option for tethering & portable hotspot in setting. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you

WiFi hotspot or tethering works on devices which have other ways of connecting to internet aside from WiFi connection so the internet can be shared from that other source (like cellular data access) through WiFi. So technically the availability of the WiFi hitspot or tethering option on the previous vesrsions of Android was meaningless and Google made the right decision to remove it from devices which are incapable of using it in Marshmallow. By the way, I beleive applications you mentioned in your post use being-on-the-same-network and WiFi Direct technologies to share files between devices not WiFi Hotspots or tethering.

I think Google believes that nowadays every PC or Laptop has WiFi adapter by default so they can use their own WiFi adapter to connect to the internet.
well my laptop's wifi doesnt working and i was using my n7's usb tethering to connect internet and now after the patch it is gone. i just dont understand why. I was even able to share my files with hotspot to everyone around me and i was able to use airdoid or wifi transfer without any internet connection. I will go back to lollipop 5.1.1..
