[Q] Transfer SMS Messages from S5 to M8 - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi There!
I have always used SMS Backup + which has worked well, but for some reason despite trying to transfer 15000 messages I had, it restored them but I can't find them.
Is there a tool that will backup to the SD Card on my S5 so I can move to my HTC M8 and restore From the SDCard?
Thanks.

15000?! Holy **** lol maybe cut down on some of the saved texts doesn't it lag your phone when loading the app? That same app backs up texts to the sd card so try that. It's always worked for me. After you do the restore turn the default messaging app back to the texting app and try maybe to restart the phone

try HTC transfer tool..I works everytime.

If you are rooted you can use titanium backup. Save messages to xml transfer the file and restore the file on the m8.

do a nandroid backup, copy it off the sdcard, put sdcard in the new phone and verify correct radio, recovery, etc and then restore the backup.
wouldnt that work?
also, if text messges are that important, i know there is an app that will send all your SMS messages to your gmail account as a backup, might be called smsbackup.
If the phone with shattered screen is still functional, which is usually the case, there are sms backup apps in the market. I use SMS Backup and Restore. It backs them up on your SD card. Install the same app on your new phone and restore your text messages.

There's an app called mybackup, free version expires in 30 days but that's ok. You can backup your texts online - that might make it easier to get it to the new phone - no need to swap sdcards.

+1 for sms backup and restore. The other mentioned methods will also work, nandroid and such.

[Q] Titanium Backup : can you backup your sms?

How would you recover your sms with Titanium Backup?
is that something possible or we have to use something else?
thanks
I was wondering that too. I have the paid version, love it, but I thought I backed up the messages as well. Apperently not though.
Did I miss the setting?

There's a free program in the market that I used to back up and restore my SMS called SMS Backup & Restore (by Ritesh Sahu)
I've had no problems with SMS Backup+ from the market - it stores the texts and MMS to your Gmail and allows for backup and restore. Makes it real simple.
Titanium does backup the SMS data, but I don't remember where it does, and on my myTouch3G 1.2 it was kind of buggy restoring it (though it mostly works). I think it's the data from Dialer Storage 2.2 that houses the SMS/MMS?
Handcent now backups sms/mms
I used to use SMS backup from above post, but it wasnt able to do mms' (at that time) so I tried Mybackuppro (in the market) and it works perfect. plus it does other backups too. I ended up buying it.
I used to have problems with Titanium with sms/mms, but I havent tried any recent versions.
I use MyPhoneExplorer. It syncs everything on your phone to your PC.
this could be outdated info now, but when i used titanium backup to backup sms/mms, it would make a backup of the phone dialer and the associated files from /system. This is not the best way to backup the sms's since a new rom may have made modifications to this.
i recommend sms backup and restore, which is what i use myself. titanium backup is great for apps and app data though!
Sorry for bumping and old thread but this brings up a question. Would any of these be able to create a backup of your SMS/MMS and convert them over to a text file of some sort so you can print up records of them? I remember when I had a Blackberry I used to be able to do this with software I purchased for it. This would be a great feature I would be interested in using. I tried searching for something that discussed this but came up with nothing. Sorry if its been covered before. Thanks in advance.
To back up texts just make a back up of Dialer Storage [SMS/MMS] and restore.

I think marvzuno wants something that can backup AND convert the message to a text file to be read on a computer or something, not only a backup...

I'm looking for something more like the poster below was talking about. Thanks for the info though. This will be useful just for the backup process.

Yes, Something that would convert the backup file into something I would be able to view on a computer. ANy suggestions or ideas on this?
I'd like to put in my vote for SMSBackup+. The restore feature doesn't always work perfectly, but the backup has never failed me. stores it as plain text in your gmail, which is then searcheable.
Love SMS Backup+, saves them to Gmail and can also pull them back to the device as other people have said, works great, no issues!

Help wanted

Does anyone know the best prog to back up my sms and contacts and restore seamlessly in my htc one from my desire with no messing about. I tried mybackup but it wont see the backup on the sdcard. Any help would be appreciated .
Contacts i use Google - just needs a quick sign in of your google account and an even quicker sync and your contacts are there ready for you - alot easier than Sim or SD card for me
I have done that but got lots of the same name which means i got to go through them all. The sms migrated ok just the contacts are a pain
do htc devices on first set up not ask if you want to migrate data?
No i cant remember it saying that might need to bluetooth the buggers or something
try

How Do I Restore SMS Backup to the S3?

i had GO SMS on my htc inspire 4G. i now have the s3. i made a backup of all my messages (through GO SMS) on the htc inspire. i then took out the micro sd card from the inspire and transferred it to my s3. when i opened GO SMS on the s3 to restore the backup, the s3 couldnt find the backup. how do i fix this?
It's prolly looking for them in your internal memory rather than external, transfer the folder and/or file from your external to your internal?
I just use SMS Backup+ from the play store. Backs them up to Gmail, just be sure to set your messaging app to not delete old messages before you restore.

well just FYI, i'm not rooted yet.. maybe this is the reason why the phone isnt able to see the needed files.
Or use my backup there's a free version that works well and doesn't require root

You can also try Go Backup by the same dev that made Go SMS Pro. It has option to backup and restore SMS, contacts, and then some. I dont believe you have to be rooted. And as someone already mentioned, My Backup (free version) can do it too and no root required.

Try this:
Make a backup (current is fine) of your sms that is already installed on your phone.
Then, look for where the file is stored (you can use file explorer to do this)
after you find the backup, try copying the file you have previously backed up on your computer, to that folder and then do the sms restore on your phone, (you do have that same sms backup app on the phone, right?)
should work, as long as you are using the same sms app.
Good luck & Aloha!

There's no android app to restore deleted SMS. You will need to do it on computer. Here's a good program called Android Photo Recovery for restoring deleted files such photos, videos and music files from Android phone, but no SMS.
Anyway, you can backup your SMS from your samsung galaxy 3 to computer, so that you will never lose them forever.

Why are you trying to sell a $40.00 Photo recovery package to get back SMS?
I use "AST android sms transfer" to backup and restore my text messages..

Titanium does not backup SMS messages, these are stored in a database, i forget where off the top of my head but shouldn't be hard to find in the forums. You can manually copy this database before a rom flash and copy back afterwards, or back them up online using an app. There are atleast a handful, personally i use SMS Backup + by Jan Berkel. This creates an SMS folder to you gmail account and backs up the each sms indivdually to gmail which makes searching for a buried text a snap, and also allows you to access any message that has already been backed up from anywhere with access to gmail. Did i mention its free .

I found this in another thread regarding pulling SMS messages from a phone, although i haven't confirmed this is the correct (or only) location of the SMS database.
"You can get the sms database from /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases"
I use My Backup Root to save SMS/MMS and call log messages before a flash. It has the capability to back up apps too, but TiBu does a better job on apps.
I use My Backup also. I liked it enough I bought the pro version. Use it every flash for SMS, call log, bookmarks, apps and there data. The free version does all this. The pro version allows you to restore backups to a different phone, only difference between free and paid versions. One quirk I've found is that restoring apps and data you have to do apps, reboot, then restore app data. Other than that its great.
SMSBackup+ for me... never had a problem with it.

I use titanium backup and works perfect for sms and mms. Hit the menu button and select backup data to xml and select the sms option. Also works great for call log backup. To restore just hit menu and select restore from xml.

I was not aware of this, although i do like having my sms's backed up to gmail this is good to know.
The Titanium Backup option sounds good, I didn't know that..
But I use SMS Backup either way.. 60% of the time, it works everytime..
Yeah, TiBu does back up mms and sms messages, I have used the restore and backup many times and its has worked perfectly every time.
Thanks for the replies guys. I personally like the tibu option. As long as I've had the app, i never knew it did that. Tibu is a must have. So it's best to use it beings you've already got it. I'm one that prefers not to have dozens of apps downloaded. I get by as simple as possible. I checked on some of the recommendations and some of them don't backup mms. Thanks for everything guys
Thanks for everyone.

Hi,
Titanium even allows to batch the backup of SMS/MMS, but also Call logs, Bluetooth associations and WLAN networks in XML. It even syncs the backup to Dropbox.
A must have as far as I am concerned when often flashing new ROMs.
