[Q] Nexus 7 Lit Black Screen when Trying to Awake - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Hey,
I have been experiencing a bit of weird bug with my Nexus 7 2013. Basically, when I go to use my Nexus after it has been idling for a little while, it will often be on when I open the tablet from its case. However, it does not display any typical Android elements but shows only a lit black screen...I have to hard reset it to get it back to normal function...
Any ideas? Very perplexed....I have tried different kernels and factory reset several times.
--Android 4.4.4 (Rooted)
--Kernal: Faux Kernel 22u/Franco R17
One thing to note: I can replicate the behavior by quickly pressing the power button several times. It goes right into the 'lit black screen' and needs to be reset.
Thank you!

What do you mean by 'lit black screen'? It sounds like a hardware problem to me.

I have the same problem with my nexus 7 2013. It happens very often. When the screen was turned off for a while, it won't react to anything and the screen stays black, but the notification led is still active. The only thing that helps is pushing the power button very long. Then the Google logo shows up and it boots up normally. The tablet is on original Android 4.4.4 not rooted.
I will ask for an exchange in the next couple days.

Great haha. I know that I am not the only person with this problem now ...So you think it is hardware related and not software?
If so, UGH! I've already had to sent this POS in twice now .

[Q] Anyone experiencing powering off and troubles switching it back on (charged)?

Hello guys,
I tried to search for a similar issues but I couldn't find anything similar so please bear with me.
My KF sometimes shuts down overnight. In the morning then I have troubles to switching it on again (clicking the power button, holding it for longer periods of time...). It usually helps for the tablet being connected to the charger, but it takes a few tries to turn it on. After I managed to turn it on again, for example yesterday, it had 80% of battery left.
I am using CM nighties and this is happening already for some time.
I am also using juice defender, I am not sure if that is relevant.
Do you have any suggestion, what could be the cause of this? Maybe a suggested alternative rom? Or some logs I can check? I think the powering on troubles bother me more than the shutting off overnight since I always think it won't come back on anymore.
Also, not sure if relevant. If I try to turn it on and it doesn't, sometimes the button flashes orange. After a few tries it turns green and powers on. Not sure if I am now not only confusing times, when it was simply out of juice.
P.S. On a different note, just curious, does anyone know how if there is a rom with working mic already?
Thanks in advance.
jkb
Yes, I sometimes have the same issue with the power button - in fact it happened to me this morning where I went from about 60% charge to 16% with a sudden power drop.
Not sure why this happens. I thought it was a bad battery so I changed it but am still getting the problem every now and then.

the only thing that i can think of is that during the middle of the night a soft-reboot happens and it cant boot back up into the system. this would cause it to sit there and continually try to boot up. this would use a lot of cpu and a lot of power. as for why that drains battery while being plugged in, well i cant help you on that.
Thanks for the input. I've wiped dalvik, cache and the system and installed hashcodes AOSP Jelly Bean (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2041694) and at least it survived this night without shutting down so maybe this helped. If I come across the same issue, I will update this thread with new info.
Thanks again,
jkb

Sounds like a hardware issue, and Amazon has been replacing those of customers who buy new from them.
Mine has this issue too. I KNOW it has battery power, and is still on, but the screen won't turn on. Only solution is to plug in power, then hold down the power button until it shuts down hard. Then turn back on.
I'm returning mine because of it.
Thanks for the info. I am still hoping this is a software issue.Regrettably I am outside o the US and thus replacing it is nearly impossible. I will see, if the issue returns with the new rom and will update the thread if it happens again, just for your information.

Try going to the WiFi settings and selecting 'never' for keeping WiFi on during sleep. This seemed to work for me.... So far it hasn't happened again.

I think this is the bug I am experiencing:
Shutdown bug stalls out the shutdown. Looks like the device is off, but it's still powered draining battery. Currently requires long power button press to fully shutdown after the screen is black (about 15-20 seconds).
from the 3.4 kernel thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2264563). I am not sure if cm 10.1 nighties contain this kernel, but the description is pretty much spot on.I couldn't test the fix (holding the button for 15-20 seconds), since I already changed roms, but if someone experiences the issue again, he can post if this works and which rom and kernel they are using.
This happens to my Kindle Fire device as well. It just randomly shuts off and it won't come back on until I do a hard shutdown then turn it back on. I currently have AOSP Jelly Bean 4.2.2_r1 on it.

Yes, it happened again to me with the same ROM, but it happens less often. I will try the updated kernel once it is finished.
On May 27, 2013, Hashcode listed the known issues of the current kernel on his website:
Sound / MIC debugging
Deep sleep issues with “omapdss_dpi” device
SmartReflex shutdown loop fix.
Charging driver / OTG improvrments

Looks like they've been identified and are being resolved. :good:

Nexus 7 2013 bricked

Hi guys. I'm in trouble. I have a rooted nexus 7 2013 which was working just fine for a couple of months. Then abruptly it seems to have bricked itself.
After checking my mail, I closed my magnetic case as usual. Then when I opened the case as usual a few hours later I discovered it had powered itself off. Strange! But I just pressed the power button and it started booting up. However it got to the X screen and just stayed there. I rebooted several times always with the same result.
So I tried powering up with the down volume and power button pressed and it took me to a screen with "restart bootloader" which I did, and then 'start". But no difference : it stays at the X screen and no further.
I then went to the recovery screen and got the open android robot with a RED triangle and explanation mark. Going power up or down did not bring up any other options
Looks like I'm really bricked!
Trouble is that I'm away from home and will not be back for 3 weeks. I therefore don't have a computer to connect to and try to do something. Only the nexus 7 to work with.
The nexus is rooted and I have TWRP recovery backups on it but no way to access them.
Is there anything I can do to recover from this brick? I really need help and I'm an android newbie.

[Q] sometimes screen doesn't turn on again

Hi there,
I have this really annoying behavior of my nexus that sometimes the screen just doesnt want to turn on which means I have to do a hard reset and the worse is that its happens more and more.
Some days ago I read in this forum something about the light sensor but I couldnt find the thread again
Any idea what I can do?
Cheers
Stephan
Are you undervolting on a custom kernel? That can definitely cause your SOD issue.
prshosting.org
no, its the standard google android rom and it happens with 4.3 as well as with 4.4
The only thing is that the device is rooted but that shouldnt cause a problem
I have this same issue, brand new Nexus 7, it hasn't happened yet today but for the first several days (on both stock and then OTA 4.4) I simply COULD NOT make the thing turn on with the power button. I was cringing hard because my Note 2 had that problem out of the box and I had to ship it back for warranty (for six @%$&'ing weeks), but in that case the button felt obviously sloppy. On my Nexus the button has a very crisp feel to it, I was wondering what I could be doing wrong but it seems to have 'broken in' or something because it hasn't happened the last 50 times I poked at it. Honestly, it felt like a software bug rather than a hardware problem.
I also was running stock and had the SOD. I was lucky because I just had to hold the power button for 15 seconds.

[Q] Power on Problems ??

Does anyone else have power on problems? Sometimes mine will only turn on when plugged in to USB. The last time I tried this it was 90% charged.
Thanks...

Nope.
Nope, no such Problems.
It's kind of weird. The power button is responsive when android is running. My screen blacks out and comes back normally. It doesn't seem like it's a hardware issue. It's just powering on. Some times it takes like 3 or 4 tries before it will power on. I have seen this before with my nexus and gtab but only when I went to a non factory rom.
I really like this tab and I don't have the blue line issue or backlighting problems. Just trying to see if this is a keeper or not.
Thanks

Maybe you should do a factory reset to see if that fixes it.
Looks like it was just the SD card I was using. I am not sure what is up with it but when I added a newer 32g it's starting normally.

Screen on my 5X is randomly goes black

Is anybody have the same problem? Screen on my 5X sometimes goes black, its still working but its completly black. It is happening when Im using apps like snapchat, facebook, or sometimes i don't even need to do anything, it just go randomly black and after couple pushes of power button or even several restarts of phone screen back to normal. I tried factory reset but it doesn't work.
You should return it for warranty replacement (if you have not installed any custom ROM or modification...)
It happened to my wife's 5x, the replacement phone is just fine

Are you rooted? This happened to me yesterday twice. I'm on MDB08L, rooted with classic method and xposed installed with gravitybox....
Also, I was low on battery, around 15%
I've had it happen a couple of times too. Seems totally random, doesn't appear to be linked to any particular app, process, or battery state in my case.
I have installed Chroma rom this morning. No black screen since then... I'll update tomorrow.
UPDATE: Second day with chroma, no black screen so far.
Update 2: still no black screen...
