Android Apps vs Amazon Apps - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just a general question:
Do all android apps work on FireTV as long as I sideload them?
Can I assume that apps from the play store are the same as from the amazon store?
I bought the Plex App for android and I don't want to pay full price now for something that I already bought

A lot of apps work fine, but the 3.0.x Twitch does not work so you'd have to get the older 2.5.0 version.
The Amazon versions of Twitch and YouTube suck when compared to the real apps for anyone that has a K400r Keyboard to control the apps with.
Alternatively since the original YouTube app requires Play Services, you can get the YouTube HD MOD and install it on Fire TV without root.
It is on XDA itself.
All widgets do not work at all.
Only the Memory Booster rectangle and a few other things "widgety" will work.

No, not all android apps work on the FireTV.
Some show up wrong because they are portrait mode. So show up fine, but doesn't seem to accept any types of input at all. Some just fail to load.

Guess I will have to try then

You can always get an app that forces the orientation to be landscape so you can run those portrait apps in landscape mode.
Screen Rotation Control from "jubo co" works well, but will need to be set again if you ctrl+alt+delete to reset your Fire TV or when anything else causes your Fire TV to go off like power outages.
Too bad this app don't have a "set on boot" option.

The latest Plex App works fine after sideloading

apps like hulu, cbs, a&e, etc - are they limited in any way?

does the fire tv support "regular hulu" (NOT huluplus)? i.e., since hulu provides many tv series for free on android now, does that see the fire tv also as a regular android device and work? can someone confirm whether that works.
also, i would also like to know if apps like WatchABC, CBS, A&E etc show the full episodes that come free (without entering subscription info) on a regular android phone/device.
i use these apps greatly for catching up on TV and would like to know whether the behavior is same on fire tv as well.
thanks.
AFAIK most apps see the FireTV as an Android device unless the developer specifically has it work differently with FireTV.
thanks. it would be nice to get confirmation though.
i guess, once rooted, we can always change the build.prop to say it is a "nexus 7" etc?
my fire tv is stuck on the "we are unable to contact our servers, we will keep trying" thing.
i have rebooted like 20 times. also, using keyboard (logitech K400) to get into recovery like here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2799779 doesn't work as well.
edit - ok after reading this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=54976459&postcount=26 i had a better idea and was able to get to recovery and wipe.
but, still couldn't get past the above message.
finally, i put a keyword block for "51.1.2" on the router (removed other blocks) and let it ride. first it updated to 51.1.0.2_user_510058520 and then later after getting in to 51.1.1.0_user_511070220.
i now have root and xbmc. will update as i play with it.
thanks all.
For me the CBS app does work on my stock FTV. Since it isn't an official FTV app, I had to side load it and start it from the settings menu. It also requires a mouse to navigate in the app. That said it performs better and is less trouble to use than the alternatives I've tried (Plex or Playon server). Its a shame CBS doesn't revise their app to FTV, since they allow its use on most other android devices.

hope they don't start blocking this device .

A few ways to boot sideloaded PLEX/XBMC from the Amazon Fire TV interface

Hi all
Unrootable UK fire TV here so these are a few things I found out that made me a lot happier
1) You can use llama to boot a NEWER sideloaded PLEX app (google play store) from the original OUT OF DATE amazon store versions icon - keeping it all nice looking :¬)
As they install to 2 different locations :¬) - (google llama tutorials)
Another good reason to do this is you wont get all kinds of weird program loops when using the back button.
2) if you need an icon to boot up a sideloaded XMBC app - Just use the amazon store Air Buddy app as its own start-up screen has a boot XBMC button if its been detected
3) I found out Netflix and amazon prime would not pass-through DD5.1 to anything I own using HDMI (even though XBMC does fine) - BUT if you replace your HDMI with OPTICAL Netflix and amazon prime will pass through DD5.1
** Bug or did they just do it for a laugh - I think the latter :¬)
P.S. My mini keyboard works just fine too :¬)
Rii 2.4GHz Wireless Mini PC Keyboard Touchpad V2 Black
www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004FSFYG8/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Thanks for those helpful tips. I was looking for a way to have xbmc on the home screen. Just to clarify...I can install llama without being rooted? If so, do you have a direct link to llama? I know I can probably find it if I look around, but with such helpful tips, some provided links to the apps that you're mentioned will make it even more helpful.
wouldn't SPMC be better? i heard you can set it as the default launcher

We have NON rootable Firetv's so as far as I know there is NO way to do anything clever
"Love to find I am wrong :¬):¬) "
So I think you need llama or you can actualy use "Air Buddy" as I said above :¬)
I am finally happy with side loading these 2 things
1) xbmc-13.2-Gotham-armeabi-v7a.apk
2) com.kebab.Llama.apk
****UPDATE - I had a look at SPMC and...
Amazon store says! - Non-compatible device
If you continue with this purchase, you may be purchasing an app that doesn't work with your device.
so its on the store but you cant install it on fire tv and it has to be sideloaded like Xbmc version I listed :¬(
also I have read it has 5.1 pass through issues.

[Q] How do you display side load apps under amazon Apps?

Hi all,
i would like to know if anyone has been able to display the side loaded apps under amazon apps locate on main pages between Freetime, Apps and Music.
I have searched all over the web but didnt see anything except this one youtube video where this user has it, not sure how he did it but he did it, watch the clip first 35 sec and you will see it. According to me all you do is add about dozen apps and they will show up under Apps section, it didn't work for me.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SCsH86MYl8
It would be awesome someone could provide a solution.
Thank you
For some reason, sideloaded apps just doesn't work. Best alternative to having to go to Settings/Apps to launch your side loaded apps is to install a 3rd party launcher like FiredTV. Works well enough on my AFS.
t from a Freedompop HTC Evo 4G
Install original amazon app it will show all your apps.. But what I can't figure out is original apps on fire tv like showtime won't work

Yea I loved this method till I realized it removes most of the functionality of the stock amazon apps. You can still access them but you have to go through the app menu and they must be loaded on there now.

Request: Google Play & Vudu app

Im very green to this amazon fire tv.
I sent a few apps to AFTV with adbFire on the pc fairly easy but neither the google apps or the vudu apps i tried worked.
The google ones just went blank and back to FTV and the vudu one only lets me get into the search function (with the ftv remote)
Not sure if I missed a step. Main goal is to get vudu working.
-sorry if this is in the wrong area :/
We need more info to be able to help you. Is your device rooted? If its not rooted then the Play Store will not work. The Play Store can be installed it just won't work unless yoour Fire TV is rooted. What is the prolem with VUDU? Is it that you cannot move around inside the app with the remote? If so its because you need either a USB or Bluetooth mouse or an app on your phone/tabet that acts as a mouse. I recommend that you install Wukong Remote on your phone/tablet if you do not have a USB or Bluetooth mouse. Wukong remote is an app you can get from the play store that you install on your phone/table and the Fire TV, and it can act as a Fire TV Remote or a mouse.
Also, the play store does not work on nonrooted devces, but you can install third party app stores. I recommend "1Mobile Market" "Blackmart" and "Aptoide". I use these three app stores to keep all my apps updated and to download any apps I need or want. You can find 1Mobile Market, Blackmart and Aptoide by doing a Google search. One thing to know about third party app stores is to never auto update apps or update all apps. Update apps one at a time and make sure that the version numbers are actually an upgrade and not a downgrade or the same exact version. Third party app store apps have different signatures so sometimes they assume a downgrade is actually an upgrade, but if you pay attention to version numbers and update apps one at a time you should be fine.
To get Google apps working on nonrooted devices look for my thread on here titled "A few good apps", it will have a link to download the four apps needed to make most Google apps work. The thread should be on page two of the themes and apps section here in the Fire TV forums. When you install the four apps do not update Google Play Services past Version 7.0.99, cause its the latest version that works on the Fire TV.

try and get the android tv version, will probably have more success with that.
And you probably won't every get playstore to fully work but all you really want is for it to register so play services will work and thus youtube and playmusic apps will work.

Thanks for reply, I have actually sorted my issues completely now, I have stopped all unnecessary amazon stuff running, huge list by the way, and have Google play all configured with android youtube and all my Google paid apps fully configured and recognising I'm signed in. Xposed setup, custom recovery, six axis with ps3 pads connected, USB OTG configured on boot with mele pro airmouse/keyboard/remote combo ? An to top it off no amazon home stuff at all, I have a launcher installed (was going to use official leaseback launcher but found it rubbish) the one I'm using is called Top TV Launcher 2.97. Very customisable and good on the eyes. Firestick is much more responsive the way it's setup now.
Nice,... I'll have to check out that launcher
