tmobile note 4 reception/LTE on ATT network - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note 4

I've been hearing a lot of stories that users using a t mobile note 3 on the ATT network were having issues with reception and getting and holding onto LTE. Seems like an important enough topic to deserve its own thread. Initially I'd like to see issues with the Note 3 as I'm still deciding which carrier model I'll go with, but eventually we can put information on the Note 4 when its released.
I may just eat the locked bootloader with ATT. Really the only things I would miss are xposed modules and titanium, I'm not into custom roms anyhow. Tmobile reception is just too horrible in my area so staying on their network isn't an option.
EDIT: Also wondering if the Tmobile phone can use the ATT Microcell? Also can the Tmobile do tethering on the ATT network?
Edit2: I'd love to see some db numbers as it seems just judging reception by bars is highly inaccurate, most users don't even realize tmobile uses 4 bars versus ATT's 5 bars.

I have the at&t note 3 and the the tmobile note3.I have been using the tmobile note 3 on at&t service since the day it came out. I get the same coverage as the at&t model including lte with no problems sometimes better on the tmobile version. I will be buying the note 4 on tmobile Again to use with my att service until the note edge comes out. I will be buying the tmobile note 4 version again thus year because of the att locked bootloader crap. I can live without the roms but not root access, xposed and wanam apk take care pretty much of the rom stuff. It takes to long to get root on the att model. Look how long we had to wait last year just for root and the bootloader is still locked tight, with no promise of ever being unlocked. The tmobile note 4 will be probally rooted in the first week if release., Bye, Bye, AT&T PHONES ,YOU SUCK AT&T..

I was one of the people to use the TMO Note 3 on AT&T who had reception issues. HSPA+ reception was fine, LTE reception was awful. It wouldn't even pick it up in areas where an iPhone 5 would sit with 2 LTE bars.
Having used the TMO S5 on AT&T, I didn't have any problems. The note 4 should be fine.

Had nothing but LTE reception issues with my TMO Note 3 on AT&T. For this alone, I'll pick up the AT&T Note 4. I don't have much need for root nowadays anyway.

I've been using the T-mobile Note 3 on AT&T for a year now and haven't had reception issues. It does switch to HSPA+ from LTE earlier than my ATT note 2 did but the db signal strength was the same.
Having root is an absolute must for me. I have to have adaway, truecrypt (EDS), debloat, and Titanium backup. I would pull my hair out (what's left of it) looking at all the ads on my phone.

I'd rather have reception than the very few remaining reasons to root these days as I use my phone for business and it's crucial. It may be a small difference or large, but I can't take that chance. Really the last reason I root is titanium and xposed.

My G3 (AT&T variant) has real trouble holding onto LTE, and my Nexus 5 was much the same way.
Makes me think a lot of it is just their network.
I had much better LTE signal/performance on T-Mobile. But better overall voice coverage with AT&T.

I'm also on ATT considering getting the TMo version for unlocked bootloader. Is there a map that shows which bands my city uses (or does it matter)?
Thanks,
-PDX

I am getting the TMO N4 to put on AT&T also. I don't have any plans to put any custom roms on it but I figured if I was going to pay full price for a phone I might as well get all the options. I am trying to decide if I am going to pay to have it unlocked before the 40 days that TMO requires or just wait it out.

If root is an absolute must for you, then what's going to happen when root is completely locked down? It seems like things are going that direction. Will you not use a smartphone anymore?

I'm hoping that you're right and it's not just wishful thinking. I don't need roms, I really just need root.

Ya, they are slowly backing us into a corner. I don't like google's stance on no sd card slots with nexus devices. Soooooo, as long as T-mobile keeps unlocked bootloaders (which is a free pass to root) I'll probably stay with Samsung.

It's already here. Chainfire released it a few days ago. (for the t-mobile version)

I've been using an unlocked T-Mobile note 3 since it came out with no issues with LTE speeds/coverage. I want the note 4 but hadn't read anywhere that it was confirmed to have an unlocked bootloader. Has anyone confirmed that the bootloader is unlocked? Also are the bands going to cover us for all our services on att? Also att is coming out with LTE-A soon, will the note 4 unlocked support it?

Hopefully it's the same case for the AT&T and VZW versions. I really don't want to have to sell it immediately and then go through the process of buying a TMO one.
Would've done that outright, but I can't afford it at full retail. Had to go with a 2yr upgrade and the BB promotion.

u-dig?
Of course the tmo version doesn't work perfect out of the box, but after some minor modifications it will work beautifully!
I've had a tmo note 3 over a year with excellent results!!!
You will need to configure the build prop and configure the apn for ATT..
Then enjoy!

Can You unlock an ATT Note 4 To work on T mobile? I tried out The service I have never seen data speeds so fast before In my life. 70 down 20 up. Will the bootloaders Unlock if I have The phone unlocked for their Network?

Just curious . I have the tmo note 4 running on Att for about 4 to 5 months now. The only thing that changed was the APN. Everything is working fine.
What changes did you have to make to build prop?

Flash Tmobile ROM on AT&T or vice versa - Future Proofing the best!

So I've read thru many threads on here and found people that seemed to have flashed their tmobile ROM onto their AT&T device in order to get proper 3G+ speeds.
1) Does this actually work?
2) Is it better to flash the other way (if possible, AT&T rom onto Tmobile) in order to get maximum service from both phones? What is the best/better phone to purchase for future LTE future proofing?

I am also on the t-mobile Q&A section looking for answers... the best phone for future proof and LTE is the AT&T version... no doubt... now... I am waiting for an AT&T Stock Rooted WITH MODEM included in the same flash zip before I begin testing myself... I already ordered from ebay a dual sim card adapter for the Note 2, and the Note 2 is already unlocked... so... any news on this would be great...
I just flashed Tmobile Jedi X3 with my att note 2...all working perfectly....the steps I took was just to flash rom and one of our att kernels and youll be fine...didnt have to flash modem....just put my straight talk apn in done....Everything perfect...btw jedi X3 is super fast....:good::highfive:

Sounds like you might be in the same boat as me. Anxious to get a Note II but not sure which network to commit to with it. Your comment about needing to get a TMo ROM to get "proper 3G+ speeds" is disconcerting. It also pushes me a bit towards TMo since it's got the LTE radio promised for future update.
What exactly is wrong with the stock device's 3G+ speeds on AT&T?
Where I live and work (Los Angeles area - San Fernando & Santa Clarita valleys), LTE's not activated, and no firm date when it will come our way. AT&T's HSPA data speeds here aren't anything to write home about, but neither are TMo's when I tested one of their devices in the local shop. My AT&T phone is lucky to get 4Mb/s down, 0.2Mb/s up, and generally only about 2-3Mb/s down. The TMo Galaxy SIII I tested got 4MB/s down. Hard numbers to swallow when I've got an SIII on VZW LTE pulling down 20Mb/s in the same area.

I need clarification on this. Just because the ROM flashed worked, doesn't necessarily mean the proper AWS radio's were activated to attain 4G speeds that are required on T-mobile (this is nothing to do with LTE).
Are you saying that by flashing the tmobile ROM onto your at&t note 2, you are able to attain all connections (not just Edge, but HSPA+ 4G) with your AT&T device to tmobile using AWS? I know Tmobile has begun refarming out to 4G on a different band that is compatible with more handsets, so you might just be in an area where they have already done so, which mistakes you into believing that you are actually connecting via the old school AWS Tmobile bands, when you aren't.
I really need to decide which phone I want to take the risk on - The tmobile LTE is locked apparently, doesn't seem to show as many capable bands as the AT&T version, and also, I'm not sure what to bank on in terms of there being a software vs hardware lock (Would be nice if the tmobile can be unlocked via software to fully operate on all LTE modes that the AT&T supports).
I'm actually in Canada, and would probably end up needing to purchase the Wind version in order to get what I'm looking for (since Wind operates on the same AWS frequencies as tmobile). But losing out on Bell/Rogers/Telus LTE in the process is just something I don't want to do either.
Going to have to see what can be unlocked via software on all these different phones................
I would also appreciate a response from someone if this is possible... using T-Mobile ROM and modem to work on At&t (with aws frequencies).... just like the S2 I717 mod which after flashing was working with aws frequencies....

Yes... it should... as soon as I get my dual sim card adapter for the Note 2... I will post a million results/combinations here on T-Mobile and AT&T forums... I just don't want to open the back cover 30 times a day and swap sims a bunch of times... with the adapter I just insert the 2 sim cards and done... testing all the way from that point on...

I have the SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 from AT&T, unlocked via unlock code from AT&T. No root, stock AT&T android 4.1.1. I got the t-mobile microSIM card with an unlimited talk and 2GB unlimited data plan, but I can not get tmobile 3G/4G working reliably. I get HSDPA/HSPAP/UMTS/EDGE randomly. 80% EDGE, 20% high speed between 4-8mbps down, 0.7-1.9mbps up. I am in Los Angeles, CA.
I know my SGH-I317 does not have the 1700MHz antenna needed for t-mobile 3G/4G data, but somehow I get 3G/4G 20% of the time. I have not adjusted any special settings on my phone, other than to reset the APN to default epc .tmobile .com. My guess I am getting 3G/4G via the 2100MHz antenna for download, but without the 1700MHz for fast upload, I get 0.7-1.9mbps only. But most of the time I am stuck at EDGE.
So has anyone gotten the AT&T Note II to reliably work on t-mobile 3G/4G? is there a special setting I need to enter on my phone? does flashing the t-mobile ROM on the AT&T phone solve any of the 3G/4G issue? or will I lose the unlock on my phone when I root or when I flash t-mobile ROM on my AT&T Note 2?
Any help greatly appreciated.

Hey I got a unlocked & Rooted At&t Note 2 on T-mobile running CleanRom with perfect 4g. Before I rooted my phone I changed my phones modem to T-mobiles because I only had edge. After that I have flashed several different At&t Roms and still have 4g. On speed test I get about 7-9mbs download and 2-3 mbs on upload not the best but way better than edge

I am actually using the CleanROM 4.5 (haven't flashed 4.6.1 as I do not see much new on that ROM). I am actually using it on the stock kernel because I am not a huge flasher like many of the members here. Since Note 2 is my daily driver, I don't want to keep updating it and customize it after each ROM flashing. I like the CleanROM 4.5 since it was the way I got it and I just updated to the new version. The battery life is pretty good as I can last a day or more with moderate use.

Use Verizon Note 4 on AT&T?

As Verizon is charging $700 compared to the 800+ at&t is charging for an off contract note 4 I was wondering if its possible to use the off contract verizon Note 4 on AT&T. How would one use a CDMA device on a GSM network??
It was my understanding that all Verizon phones now had a SIM slot for LTE Compatibility? I assumed if the Sim slot was unlocked you'd be able to put an AT&T sim card in and configure carrier settings and get access but wanted to confirm?

Most modern Verizon phones have GSM radios in it, and it's unlocked.
The problem with using Verizon's Note 4 on AT&T is LTE. They don't have the same radio, so you'd be stuck on AT&T's 3G.
This was the conversation I had with an AT&T rep today. She was convinced I could just buy the Note 4 from VZW at $699 and bring it over to AT&T... she didn't mention, nor did she seem to be aware that LTE would not work.
Yes well, it all depends on the ATT LTE Band that's in use in your area. I have a VZW S5 that's on ATT prepaid pulling LTE all day. Band 7 I believe.
Sent from my VS985 4G using Tapatalk
VZW phones generally have radios with some overlapping LTE band coverage with both ATT and TMO. AWS Band 4 I believe is used by all 3 carriers but not in all areas of the US.
Unfortunately VZW mainly uses Band 13 and ATT band 17 although supposedly Samsung devices have this enabled in the Hidden Menus but I have never gotten band 17 on ATT.
My 2 cents
Verizon's website says their model supports bands 4 and 13. The AT&T website says their model supports bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 12, 17, 20, and 29. From what I remember, AT&T's primary LTE bands are 4 and 17 so if Verizon is being completely truthful and it doesn't support any other bands other than 4 and 13, your LTE coverage may be spotty or even completely non existent.
Verizon Note 4 is out now...
Anyone have a report yet?
I can confirm verizon note 4 is working on at&t & tmobile.
I just got my verizon note 4 today and i put my tmobile sim in it and i had to do apn settings and it worked fine the only problem is lte is not working it worked on hspa and my speeds were 6mb down and 2.5 mb up. Which is good for me.
But if u want to use lte u have to enable band 4 which is locked on verizon model. To enanble it u neef to root ur phone with chainfire root (it's the only method to root right now) but it will trip knox sensor and void ur warranty .
And same applies for at&t. No lte but 6mb on hsps looks good to me.

U just need to enter the right apn settings. I'm getting mms just fine on straight talk. My problem is that our phones support air view with pen and finger, and yet they buried the setting so deep we need root to access it and make it stick. I used nova launcher to access the setting but it turns back off once the phone is put to sleep. Stupid! Just let us decide If we want it or not!!!

Finally have the APN set right to send/receive mms. Problem is anything over 1mb fails. Pics send and receive just fine but if for some reason the pic is say, 1048kb, the mms fails, everytime.

At least you got it to work finally. :good:
Just ported my work number (verizon) to my personal account (ATT) and they let me keep my note 4. I used the APN settings for the ATT S5 and am getting around 10mbps/down and 2-5mbps/up. I'm not rooted yet but will be working on that to see if I can get LTE functional.
I use Hangouts for SMS so that was already working.
s5 settings I used...

I have a POS s3 mini as a work phone (att) I've put that Sim in my Verizon s4 and all was good. Traveling internationally put the att Sim in my vzw note 4 I get voice but not data connections.

So the Note 4 requires root to enable the service menus in order to enable the various bands available on the phone. Verizon has chosen to restrict this access. You need to modify the build.prop and the efs\carrier\hiddenMenu file. So until a root procedure is available the retail version is stuck with HSPA+, which isn't too bad I guess.
Working on my s5 I have made the changes but I am still figuring out how to exactly turn on the disabled bands. I am also hoping these modifications will apply to the Note 4 once root is available.

You have to modify the APN settings after you put the ATT sim in the VZW phone.

I'm wondering if anyone has tried flashing the phone with ATT's firmware. Perhaps this is a more benign method which, as a plus, would show ATT logos throughout the interface. I'm having a verizon note 4 given to me; I'm considering my options.

Is anyone using the T-mobile version on AT&T yet??

Since people got their hands on the T-mobile version yesterday I am curious if anyone is using it on AT&T yet?
Thanks
I'm interested too... I get mine tomorrow.
As far as I can tell, the Sim card unlocks are not available yet. A few vendors say they should have them going by this week. Hopefully by Friday when my TMo Note 4 arrives.
I was under the impression you could just put your ATT sim in a TMobile phone and off you go. Not true?
There is a guy in the TMo forum that said he found someone who could unlock (~$35) it and he is using it on AT&T currently.
I got my phone on Monday (t mobile version) i unlock it on wend, since then i have been using it but had to call costumer service since i lost lte signal 2 times already, worry that this might be a issue i will see often

Have you tried a different APN?
I owned both the T-Mobile and AT&T Note 3. I started off with the T-Mobile variant and was never very happy with LTE reception. It would just drop LTE often.
After reading of others on XDA experiencing the same issue, I bought the AT&T version. Immediately, I noticed a big jump in LTE strength. I know the debate still exists to whether or not the AT&T variant has better network tuning specific to AT&T's network. It didn't really matter to me what it was. It was enough of an improvement for me to give up my T-Mobile variant with an unlocked bootloader.
For the Note 4 I'm waiting on some feedback from users with the T-Mobile variant on AT&Ts network. Your post isn't very reassuring.

That's weird indeed.
Note 3 and Note 4 from T-mobile have both been flawless for me on AT&T. I unlocked my Note 4 yesterday, and have zero connectivity issues that I know of. While it may be possible a AT&T branded phone works better on their network, I have no complaints at all. 25Mb/down, 17Mb/up was my last speed test.
Even if there is a slight difference, isn't it worth using the T-mo variant anyway, for the unlocked bootloader and all the extra options that provides?

I agree that the unlocked bootloader is a pretty big deal. Unfortunately the difference in LTE reception in my case warranted selling my T-Mobile version after comparing.
I should have mentioned that both phones were pretty much identical in areas with decent to strong signal. The real difference I noticed was when signal was weaker. My AT&T version simply held the LTE steady when the T-Mobile would constantly switch back and forth. This is not to say that they were not receiving about the same bandwidth.
I am very interested in how the Note 4 does. I'm hoping to see a few more posts tonight about LTE performance before I hit the stores tomorrow to pick up either one based on the feedback from here.
Thanks for letting us know about how your's is handling!

Well I didn't see any additional posts before heading out to buy it this morning so I took a chance and got the T-Mobile variant. I'll provide feedback on AT&T LTE reception once I get my unlock code.
The wife wants a Note 4 as well so I'm probably going to pick up an AT&T variant and test them both for signal on AT&T's LTE network.
I got the unlock code in just over an hour and I'm up and running on AT&T's LTE!!
I'm pretty happy to report that it appears that the T-Mobile Note 4 is getting outstanding signal at my house and speeds are the same or better than the AT&T Note 3 right next to it.
The real test for me will be at the edge of AT&T LTE reception, which is where I was having issues with my T-Mobile Note 3. I wont know this until I go to work next Monday as my office is the perfect test for this.
Wireless Tether is completely unlocked with the T-Mobile Note 4 on AT&T's network without the requirement to root/mod as it was on the Note 3.

What happened to the law that was just passed for Sim unlocking? TMO should give you an unlock code if you bought it outright.

Can I flash T-mobile ROM on Verizon Note 4 910V

-I am no longer using Verizon anyway
-Can I get T-mobile ROM from Sammobile and Flash it on Verizon Note 4 910V AND continue using the phone on T-mobile network
-I am already using Tm on 910V but Verizon is terribly slow at delivering 5.1.1
-TIll today I don't get it
-I don't want to deal with Verizon anymore + Verizon ROM comes with tons of Verizon bloatwares
-More:
-http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-verizon/development/rom-jasminerom-v1-0-t3113771 >> this seems like a promising ROM no bloatwares from VZ
-Can Note 4 910V owners flash ROMs? (as in; I DON'T have the DEVELOPER EDITION, I just have the normal retail 910V - where one gets from Verizon retail store)
-I don't actually need ROOT, I just sick of Verizon's way of handling software; it's slow to update; and they don't seem to care
Not going to happen, probably ever, it seems.

....................all I had to do was pop in the t-mobile sim in and make the suggested setting adjustments. In my area I got 4g on my sm-n910v on the t-mobile network. No problem
I'm in the same situation can we flash a tmobile note 4 rom onto the verizon note 4 910v with no issues?
TMobile Note4 ROM on Verizon Note4?
I too am in this dilemma of wanting to switch to TM from VZ because my VZ 4G has gotten so slow compared to TM.
TM has told me that they are not sure if my SM-N910V will work on TM yet it works on ATT. My Note4 IS unlocked.
I tried popping in a friends SIM at TM store and the rep changed the settings, but it just would NOT connect. Of course he only wanted to sell me one of their phones.
I just bought this Note4 Oct 2015 from a third party and it works fine, but lately VZ is sucking HARD!
Any news hear?

It WILL work. Sounds like they just wanted to sell you a phone I've been using TM on my 910V for the last 4 months with absolutely no issues whatsoever. With the T-Mobile sim card inserted, go to Settings -> Network Settings -> Access Point Names (I'm on CM13 so the names might be slightly different)
From there, create a new APN, then name it whatever you'd like. Enter information into the fields from T-Mobile's website here: https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-2090
Then, save the APN and select it in the APN list by toggling the radio button. It should work just fine now.

Thanks. I use the SM-N910T and SM-N910V.
I've loaded sooo many custom ROMs on the Verizon Note 4 that work fine with T-Mobile.
IF I load a semi-stock or stock Verizon ROM, the device refuses to work on T-mobile.
(No matter what APNs are used.) My guess is the newer BL.
This is just ANOTHER way our lovely US carriers grab us by the balls and say, "Your device is Unlocked and Free to use on any other CDMA/GSM carrier."
Don't you believe them!
On another note; Has anyone been able to Unlock the BL on ATT models yet???

Out of curiosity, what bootloader firmware were you running when you had trouble with this? I had stock ROM + CPG2 and didn't have any issues using T-Mobile.
Hey guys, so I successfully unlocked boot loader, and flashed twrp. I Am now flashing the hybrid firmware. I will then boot to recovery, wipe, and flash a T-Mobile Rom. Correct? By the way I use cricket service. Thanks

Its more about the radio inside and which frequencies it uses......so if tmobile doesnt use a bandwidth that verizon does or your phone doesnt pick up what tmobile puts out you will have a useless phone......that is if you can find tobile rom that will even boot on your phone....some phones do cross over and run on different carriers....ive personally seen an att Iphone running verizon...but every phone is different and results are sketchy depending on the area you live in due to the frequencies used are also different in different areas!.....I wish I could give you specifics for your phone and area but I just dont know that kind of info....it is available but you will have to research that! Good luck!

Verizon Note 4 to T-Mobile Note 4
I've inherited a Verizon Note 4 (SM-N910V) Retail from a grandfather who can no longer see to use it. He was on Verizon (obviously) and I am using T-Mobile. I was going to use this as my daily driver to replace my Honor 5X. Obviously, the Note 4 is a better phone and the 5X doesn't really work all that well with T-Mo's features anyways.
I've tried just inserting the sim and adding the T-Mo APN, but I can only get phone service in the Akron, Ohio area, no data. According to GSMArena here https://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_note_4_(usa)-6758.php the phone should have Band 12 (which is supposed to be T-Mo's 4G in my area).
My goal here is two-fold: to fix the bootloader to allow rooting and remove the Verizon and Samsung bloatware, and then flash this ROM: https://forum.xda-developers.com/note5/general/romtesting-t3380186 The Resurrection Remix ROM 5.6.8. This would "essentially" make the phone a T-Mobile phone and is supposed to allow their Wi-Fi calling feature.
The Note 4 phone I have is running Android 6.0.1, baseband N910VVRU2CQ12, and Kernal v. 3.10.40 from Sep 4, 2017.
The question is: What is the safest and easiest way to root this thing, and has anyone here used the Rez Remix T-Mobile ROM?

Flash a custom ROM and add/edit the TMO APN settings....
Verizon phones cannot use Band 12...BTW....
I've been trying for many months to see if Band 12 could be enabled, but no success.

TMo firmware on ATT hardware??

Is it possible to flash a TMo ROM, Stock?, on my old ATT SM-900A (OC1) in order to get WiFi calling? I am a new T-Mobile customer and using my old hardware for the moment. Wifi calling is a huge deal for me in my weak service area.
No, it is impossible to flash stock TMo ROMs on AT&T's phone as far as I've read:
Here
However, I think there might be some ports of TMo software (custom ROM) for AT&T phones (which include Wi-Fi calling)
As seen here
I am NOT responsible for anything you decide to do at this point. I am giving you the resources to do your own research. I do not own a AT&T Phone and have no way of testing it out myself, proceed with caution.

I have flashed with TWRP (hlte) a N900TUVUFOB6.zip ROM and have WiFi calling, working on my Sprint Note 3 with a T-Mobile SIM. Installed, setup and did a backup. I restore it when I got WiFi but no cell signal. Not my daily driver but works.
Are you sim unlocked?

I'm not too familiar with the AT&T N900A Note 3, but I know about would need to be done. Now if I remember correctly, nobody was ever able to unlock the bootloader on that device, and that is definitely not good. Hopefully I'm wrong though because it would be fairly straight forward if the bootloader can be unlocked. You'd need a recovery like TWRP installed so you can flash a kernel, Safestrap won't work for that. If you could flash an actual full T-Mobile N900T ROM that includes the baseband and kernel, it should work. The N900A and N900T is almost identical except some of the network bands supported. I've looked some, and I'll look around a little more, but so far I haven't seen a single N900T ROM on a N900A device and it have functioning Wi-Fi Calling.

I know that ROM won't work the way he needs it to. The actual Wi-Fi Calling components have removed from it. I read through it and no one was ever able to get it functioning at all. *shrug*
There is no way to unlock the n900a bootloader and probably never will be. The phone is still a great device imho but it's considered old in the rapid pace of cell phone hardware.

That's what I thought. I didn't think the BL was ever unlocked on AT&T's variant, and you're correct, if it's not unlocked by now it's pretty much guaranteed it'll never happen.
I definitely agree that the Note 3 is still a great device. I'm still rockin' my N900T with it set up like the Nexus 6P/Pixel XL. And this little Snapdragon 800 can still get down. The phone is only really lacking stuff like camera hardware with OIS. But it's still really good if you don't use stuff like auto-focus. It'll turn out great pictures if you know how to manually adjust settings.
