[Q] Fully wiped phone, root won't stick - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Hello, I was flashing a couple roms last night and I decided after trying Paranoid Android Legacy and CarbonROM that I just wanted to do a clean wipe and go back to Cyanogenmod. Doing a full wipe has never been a problem for me except now in CWM I can't get root to stick, no matter what I do, and whenever I'm in recovery, I can't adb push or sideload anything to my device. I even tried installing drivers through Zadig to make a connection and that didn't work. Anyone know how I can get root to stick?

Use Philz Recovery. It is the best one out there. Even has an option to push root in Philz Settings.

Am I going to have to use Odin or Heimdall? I'm not really good with either one of those, but it seems like the only choice I have.

Neither. Download the recovery that ends in ".zip" (there are three different files, another is .tar) then go into recovery and flash it. Then go to the "Reboot Recovery" option. And once it reboots you'll be in Philz Recovery.

But the problem is that I can't get anything pushed over to my phone while in recovery. Adb says it can't find my device, even though I have drivers installed for it.

I don't have that in my CWM. All I have is mount system, cache and data, and then format those along with data/media. I formatted everything, literally everything, all I have is recovery. Its never been an issue before though, so I dunno what the issue is.

Yeah, make at least one of backup so you don't get stuck in this situation again. Really, you should be making a backup before you flash anything, every time.

Ok so from what i've read on other threads i just need to get the stock rom and flash it with that. Anyone know how i can get the stock rom for my SGH-T989? I tried this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1858435 but don't know if these are actually the roms i can use. Also i have samsung keys but need the code for the firmware first.
Anyone help me out?
What recovery are you using? Are you doing a full wipe of system/cache/data before installing?
See the screens below. Its easy to get this running on your t989. Use the most recent twrp, wipe down the phone and things will work. I don't use any scripts either, just the recovery wiping options.

Did you use Darkside Super Wipe on a 6.x.x CWM recovery? Because that will get you into a bootloop as the Darkside wipes are meant for 5.x.x recoveries. You will have to reflash and wipe cache/data instead of superwipe if that's the case.

That's actually good to know. I used to use those back in the gingerbread ROM days on this device, but hadn't recently. I'll steer clear.

Ok so I found myself stuck in the bootloop you described. I am using CWM 6.0.2.7 and had recently flashed, Cyanogenmod 10 and then most recently AOKP 4.2.2 on my T-mobile Samsung Galaxy S2 (hercules) T-989. I was having serious battery drain issues with the AOKP and tried to reflash cyanogenmod 10 but also flashed gapps 4,2,2. This was done on accident and Cyanogenmod 10 ran very buggy for like 15 minutes. I cleared all settings and cache using the various options in CWM. I then did use Darkside Super Wipe which was on my sd card. After running Darkside I am stuck in the Cyanogenmod 10 bootlogo. I can access CWM but cannot seem to get it to flash anything appropriately. Any help or assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
You need to find a tar file of your recovery to flash in Odin.
OK sorry for the long delay I apologize. I did reflash the OEM TMobile rom which actually was an upgrade to 4.1.2. Battery life is still horrible after reflashing. I would to go back to Cyanogen Mod 10 but anything from Cyanogen Mod gets stuck at the boot logo. I need help completely eliminating any trace of ROM installs so that I can reinstall Cyanogenm Mod 10 and use that ROM without any problems or battery drain. Any suggestions is greatly appreciated. I had OK battery use with Cyanogen Mod 10 but drain has gotten worse even with OEM ROM. Are there remnants of other rom installs that may be interfering with functionality?

I was in a similar situation as you are... I used Darkside Superwipe on CWM 6 and then I was no longer able to flash any more zip files. I described my experience in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2427906
I still don't know what exactly is going on with my phone (which is why I posted the thread - I'm not sure what will happen if/when I upgrade to CWM 6 again), but I was able to get CM 10.1 running by flashing CWM 5.0.2.7 from Odin and then flashing Darkside Superwipe + CM 10.1.

[Q] GB27 rooted and can't flash any rom

I new replacement phone which I rooted and am running stock gb27. Try to flash custom rom and every time it just goes to Galaxy splash screen then returns to recovery. I'm stumped. I also have the yellow triangle. Maybe I rooted the wrong way. I use agats recovery. And mobile Odin pro to flash el26 or 29. Stumped!

I have never seen that on my phone, it either bootloops or loads. Did you try to wipe C & DC when it boots to recovery?
Yes, tried everything. El29, x2 format, flash rom, reboot. Goes to Samsung screen, then flashes screen, Samsung screen flashes briefly, then goes to recovery. Tried to wipe cache and dalvik cache and reboot. Just does the same thing.

That means a kernel its not getting flashed, the EL29DB kernel is a recovery only kernel so if you boot out of it goes straight back into recovery. Try redownloading the ROM.

I have a similar problem I have gb27 stock but rooted . I have not been able to find a way to install clockworkmod so that I can do a nandroid backup or restore anything . Is it just not possible to install clockworkmod to this device running stock rooted jellybean 4.1.2 ? I don't want to install any custom roms . I just want to be able to back up the phone and restore if needed . I'm stumped too .
Did it. First made sure rom was on phone sd. Redownloaded x2 format. Used mobile odin pro to get el26, x2 in recovery, zipped rom, zipped agat gb27 kernel, gb27 modem just to be sure.and worked.

If you go to rwilco website you can download agats trec kernel there and use mobile odin or the one click from pc. It's not cwm but will give you recovery to nandroid. I don't think there is cwm for jelly bean.

Problem I can not start 4.3 ROM! PLEASE HELP!

I had this problem with every ROM, when you load the boot animation to give his first vibration when you start to put your information, freezes and restarts. restarted like 5 times. download all the 4.3 Roms to the forum t989 but all feel the same.
Wipe the internal and external memory. so try and nothing. I went back to Stock Rom 2.3.6, I redid the Root. everything perfect. UVMC6 also install radio perfect, but still, still doing the same. I have a backup copy of AOKP 4.2.2 and as I have been much with it, I want to upgrade to 4.3 or 4.3.1 any help would really really bothers me and trying everything to update and no fun.

I am on TWRP 2.6.1.0 as well.
I install the rom only no gapps or anything extra and let it boot and see what happens.
I know it may not be poss now but you could try taking out your ext-sd card and simm card and boot just from the internal drive.
I don't know that it would help but it can't hurt and it reduces variables.

[Q] Am I SOL? Maybe bricked my phone?

Okay, so here's the story.
I was using clockworkmod to flash a new ROM on my E4GT; I accidentally flashed a file which I thought was a 'safe' recovery so I could go back to ICS from JB. Well it was not a safe recovery as I thought. Before doing this, I did a format all as usual, so I now have no ROM on the phone. When the phone rebooted, it came up to the Android System Recovery <3e> menu. Normally this wouldn't be a problem for me since I could just put it in download mode and fix this via Odin, however, my USB port on the phone does not work. I charge the phone using an external battery charger.
Is there anything I can flash on the stock recovery via the external SD that will rectify my issue, without USB?
I will continue to Google this problem, but I would appreciate any additional help.+
So far, it's looking like my only option is to JTAG this huh? Hoping there is something out there I can flash from stock recovery, I mean it's not like I tried to flash an international ROM or anything....hmm

No, GB27, and like I said it worked once. It really depends on what recovery you flashed. You need to flash the matching ROM.

I get exactly what you're saying now. For some reason I flashed GB08_STOCK_NOCWM.zip or something along those lines. Now I am searching for a GB08 zip file and I think I should be good. Everything I can find is in exe format though...
It all makes sense now though. I'm used to HTC phones where I can just use whatever recovery to flash a ROM and not have to worry about different modems/kernels etc. I am crossing my fingers that this works. You've been a tremendous help today.

Philz Recovery Restore

Sprint S3. 4.4.2.
So I screwed up installing a rom this morning, and ended up having to factory reset my phone. Normally, this wouldn't be a problem, but my authenticator for my accounts (namely my Google account) was on the phone. Again, normally, this wouldn't be an issue since I made a backup using the Philz backup/restore in the recovery. However, trying to restore the backup causes the phone to constantly act up with the error "the process com.google.process.gapps has stopped working", along with any apps I (managed) to try and start. This doesn't stop unless I factory reset the phone.
I've done full resets, wipe clean for a new rom, tried restoring just basic /data folders and such. Nothing has worked so far. any ideas? Am I just screwed until Google recovers my account? Many thanks ahead of time.
PS. This started because I wanted to install a custom rom due to busybox not wanting to install correctly. Something about not being able to verify if everything it needed to install was on the phone. I was rooted and all that jazz, still didn't work. I don't even care about that right now. I just wanna get the phone working properly with the backup if possible.

Do a custom restore of /data only after you restore the full ROM. I'm guessing you tried to install a Lollipop ROM? As for busybox you need to wait for it to load everything and then press Smart Install.

this may not be the right place to post this question but i need help and all the other threads on this topic are seriously outdated. im trying to find a root method for a boost samsung galaxy s3 running 4.4.2. baseband version is L710VPUCNJ3. tried a method on a root guide on another thread that uses odin and philz recovery but i cant get it to work. the thread is pretty old, but theres some recent activity. any help or fingers pointed in the right direction are greatly appreciated. thank you.

That's the thing, the rom didn't complete the install. At least I don't think it did. Maybe it installed certain parts of itself that don't match up with the stock rom, so doing a full reset works, but doing a restore doesn't? I don't know. All I know is that the rom didn't work.

Go into Recovery. Restore Nandroid. Then go to Custom Restore. Uncheck everything but Data. Click on your Nandroid. Then click on the first data partition. Reboot. Profit.
Lollipop ROMs encrypt data whether they boot or not.

If not you'll need to wipe your internal SD. That's where the encryption takes place.

That didn't work. Process still kept crashing. I did manage to get into my account so I could change the phone number. this way, I should be able to remove the authenticator, or at least transfer it over to my phone again. Thanks for the help.
PS. It wasn't lollipop. Forgot to mention it. It was CyanogenMod 10 I was trying to install. Failed before it even started really. As well, how would this setup have worked if restoring and using the custom restore would have restored the same information? Just curious.

I'm not sure why it works, it was suggested to me by someone else, but did some reason it does. If you're not using Lollipop then it's irrelevant.

Evvery time I have flashed ANY aosp ROM, I've needed to format my internal sd card when flashing a new ROM. No matter what version it was. It wont hurt to try that.
