[Q] XBMC / SPMC stutters with nearly every video - Fire TV Themes and Apps

Hi,
I bought the AFTV in Germany and installing SPMC worked fine. I was using OpenELEC before, but running XBMC / SPMC on the FTV seems to be better as I don'T have to place the bis computer next to my TV.
The problem I have: Nearly every video stutters from time to time (somtimes, minutes in between, som stutter all the way), althoug the network is fast (connected via Ethernet to a Syno DS214+ - single user so no other access).
Most videos I tested were MPEG2-TS (named .ts) or H-264 (also named .ts). But I also had an AVI that had this problem.
Any hints what to change to get this solved?
THX,
Matthias

You could try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-tv/help/xbmc-video-stuttering-t2852227. Also search here for other threads.

I already tried the different combinations of HW-acceleration (libstagefright and mediacodec) but it did not help.
I also searched for other threads and did not find a matching one ...
Greetz,
Matthias

I believe I have a similar (or the same) problem... It seemed to work fine for a few months but lately stuttering started to occur on a daily basis

Mine was doing that too, fixed after a reboot, not sure what it was.

Hmpf! Yes, well, in Germany, there is a saying for that: Sometimes, you don't see the wood because of all the trees.
I restarted (first thing I tell everybody who has IT problems) and, surprise, surprise: problem's gone.
Thanks a lot!

I had stutters using WiFi, but since I cabled my connection I can run 1080 vids from my NAS and .ts files from my dreambox flawlessly. Have you tried a different port on your router?

I did not use WiFi-connection but cable from the beginning.
After a restart, it worked yesterday.

Restart help a bit, yes, but this is a sloppy and a temporary fix... Maybe a nice Task Manager app could help clear some junk?

This seems to me to be clearly buffer bloat, certain routers and switches have an issue with the router equivalent of a memory leak. I reboot my router every day, and never have an issue. There are usually updates available, or if your router is the right type, alternate firmware that can solve it permanently. I prefer the once a day reboot.

Touch Hd streaming BBC iPlayer

EDIT: Have discovered the problem is my bebox router, read post #10 for more details if you're having the same problem I did......
_____________________________________________________________________________________________
Hi guys, i've been looking around for the past 2 days including searching through these forums for ages and I can't quite find the answer i'm looking for. A few threads have come close but don't really help because they're not
specifically about this problem.
I've got the Touch HD it came installed with pvplayer,
when I go to the BBC iPlayer mobile site the videos hang on the connecting screen.
I've seen a video of the htc Touch HD running Iplayer but the media player the browser links to isn't the one I have.
http://wmpoweruser.com/?p=1902#comment-10175
That's the page I saw the video on.
I tried installing the Htc Streaming Media app, if i'm running that i get it
to buffer and I get audio but no video.
The toolbar also looks really small and it's garbled on the bottom right hand side of the screen. so i'm thinking I might have an old version or something.
So the question is.....
Does anyone know what player the guy in the video is using?
and if it's a different version of the Htc Streaming Media app
where can I get it.
Any help appreciated, oh and sorry if it's covered elsewhere, i've been going through these forums for ages trying to find it but all the answers seem to be relating to old hacks before the BBC started supporting the phone or people
going "runs great now" without saying what they're using to do it.
(originally posted in the general discussion by accident, no flaming please)
EDIT: I've been told by someone at wmpoweruser that it's the default player that comes with the phone, strangely I've never seen it, now i'm wondering
if there's a specific build from orange without the player. I don't want to do a hard reset to check just yet (i've spent the last week getting everything on there
that I need and I don't feel like starting from scratch)
if anyone knows of a .cab file with the "default" htc streaming app for the touch HD i'd really appreciate it. Thanks
Ive got mine from orange and it is included, and iplayer works.
I think it only works over wifi though, i could get it to work over 3g or when plugged into my PC.
Mike.
I got mine from orange too, but it hangs on the loading screen.

what player is it using to stream?
mine automatically goes to pvplayer, I can't find the htc default software anywhere.
pvplayer just stops at connecting.
Having the same problem.
iPlayer launched PVPlayer and then it just hangs on "Connecting...."
Phone from Orange also.
im on orange and it seems to work fine, still in 'Beta' tho.
Catinthehat: Does yours load up in PVPlayer or a different video player?

I get the same stuck on connecting when using m.youtube.com
(coreplayer can do it but I wanted to check the player was working)
are you using a bebox router? i've seen someone else on wmpoweruser had
the same problem, switched routers and it worked.
i'm on bebox too but don't have a spare router to check.... maybe thats
the problem.
I am using a bebox router which may be the issue.
I did manage to get audio using an old version of the HTC Streaming Media Player but no video and the menu's were all corrupt.
I'll try from different wifi

ok cool let me know how you get on.
i don't want to go buying a router just to check
EDIT:
Discovered it's almost definately the router.
i've gone back to the standard pvplayer and I think it should work without tweaks with a different router.
to explain why i think that's the case i'll explain
i had to do a few things.....
while stuck on connecting using wifi I copied the stream file from the opera tempdownload folder
to my storage card
because pvplayer will delete a temp stream from iplayer after you stop it (confused me for a bit
because i couldn't figure out where iplayer sent em and the other streams from different sites hadn't deleted themselves)
I zipped the file in a temp folder then extracted
it again so i'd keep a copy.
I turned off wifi and turned on my data connection.
I then ran the stream file with pvplayer... it got past connecting!!
buffered and started to run.... ok it stopped every 2 seconds to rebuffer for about 10 seconds so it was unwatchable
because it's meant to be a wifi quality stream and i was running on 3g but it actually got past connecting!
so it must be my bebox router not letting me connect....
interesting side note that i discovered
you can probably run iplayer without using wifi if you grab the stream file at a wifi spot
then copy the file to a different place ... probably work ok on hsdpa connection
haven't had chance to check yet. :>
You can try this.

Awesome app - still in 0.4 and a bit buggy but works in WVGA!! Best picture possible.
To stream use with tcpmp http://rghost.ru/40265 or coreplayer. Just ensure in those apps in permissions you add .mov files as assosicated otherwsie it will just download them.

thanks for the heads up just edited my last post to explain that it's almost definately my router, i've been keeping track of that iplayer app and posting back to craftyb the bugs for the touch hd
also edited my first post to explain that i've discovered the problem (probably usefull for someone, i wish more people would do the same )
ive worked out why it hangs....
its to do with ports and blocking them, at my girlfriends i connect to iplayer via wifi, (also with the pvplayer app on orange branded handset)
i need to find out which ports need to be open so i can add the app to the router, that or try get the silly router app to not be so strict!!

Hi Zooby, I can confirm that its definitely the bebox. I have the 700 series speedtouch. I disconnected it and used a friends netgear modem and could stream iplayer beautifully to my HD and Polaris. The solution apparently is to forward ports on the bebox for the hd and apply the chosen port settings to htc streaming player. I couldnt get it to work so i bought a netgear dg834gt. The dg834n works well too. If you figure out how to port forward the bebox for the Touch HD, please let us know.

i've tried a few different port ranges already, i saw someone on another thread talking about a specific range working but it didn't work for me
(the guy tried 4105 - 4125)
i've searched through forums and iplayer tech support pages for the ports iplayer mobile uses, can't seem to find them.
google is not my ally on this one.
will login to Be forums at some point see if anyone there has had the same problem.
I hope I don't have to buy a new router, I only just finished messing around with it to open up the last ethernet port to use on xbox live (for some reason the last port was reserved for other uses as standard).
I think that last port is used by Be techies when you authorise them to remote access your Bebox if you need help with a fault etc. I did search the Be forums a while back but nothing useful. I bet it's something really simple though. The problem is getting information from someone who's got it working. Someone on Be in the Uk, using a Bebox, has a pda phone and accesses iplayer(from within the UK). A bit of a tall order, i think.

yeh i know but i had an extra non wifi device i needed to put on.....
i've checked bebox forums, nobody seems to have a clue.
pretty much everyone on there is buying a different router.
i've tried a few options with the router, i just can't seem to open it up.
(changed firmware 3 times, telnet to change nat, specific ports related to the iplayer download manager... trust me... loads of things.)
i'm not gonna go buying a new router just to watch iplayer while in my house since i can do that from my pc anyway, for anyone that desperate to watch it from home on a bebox router.... buy a new router.

[Q] Very weird problem with the wifi and my network

I have my tv, my pc, my nas, my WD live and my phone all connected under the same network of course.
As I was watching a tv show, I picked the phone to answer to a what's app conversation and the tv shows frozed for 5 seconds on the TV.
I thought it was a one time case. Tonight I was watching another tv show and the same thing happened! Once I pick the phone and use its connection it makes the WD live freeze!
This must be a problem of the Galaxy nexus because I just bought it and with my old Desire S I never had this issue.
I'm on Black Bean AOKP and it uses the franco kernel. Any idea on what the problem might be?
Many thanks.

Looks like your phone hogs all the data when you use your phone. Maybe what's app is at fault. Try doing something else that uses a lot of data on your phone while streaming on your tv (say, watch you tube on the phone) and see if you get that sudden spike in usage. If it doesn't occur, could be what's app is the culprit and you need to contact the dev or find a new app

I have che following setup.
Rooted ftv. Xbmc 13.1. Stick mount to connect an external HDD.
Xbmctorrent is configured to save stuff on a subdir in the HDD. It works fine for TV series episodes. Yesterday night I tried with a movie and had two times the fire TV to completely crash after something like 15 minutes watching. I guess this might be related to having downloaded a file which is larger than a certain threshold. The first time it crashed I also got scared because it was stuck in the Amazon black screen without any sign of life. I removed power for a while to have it start back.
I am watching a TV episode now and it seems fine.
The other issue I experienced is sometimes getting the Xbmctorrent script failed. Not on eztv though, I guess this is related on how they handle individual sources.
Any help or other experiences?
Do you guys also know a better way integrated in xbmc to pick up a torrent to be downloaded and then watch it later, rather than immediately streaming?
I have two AFTV with XBMC 13.1 and xbmctorrent.
I never had issues with any files over 4gb. I mounted a usb flash drive (NTFS formatted) with stickmount, but I don't use that for xbmctorrent. I have xbmctorrent buffer up on the AFTV internal memory.

This is really interesting. I wonder why I have so serious issues.
Yesterday I tried with a TV show, and it was stopping the reproduction immediately after starting, even though the download had no problems at all! After tried a few times, I had again the most disruptive crash with AFTV stuck on the black screen with white amazon logo. After that, I decided to uninstall the plugin.
Any suggestion?!

Try not putting any path for the download field in xbmctorrent, so it will use the internal memory to download on.
XBMCTorrent
This issue is happenning to me as well, I have toyed with all the options\save pathes possible, nothing seems to fix it.
I also opened an Issue on XBMCTorrent's Gibhub and Stream (a fork of this addon) but no help yet.
This is my favorite addon and it's a total deal-breaker for me about the AFTV
I really hope someone will find a fix for this...

I think the solution is simple.....uninstall XBMC and install SPMC (XBMC for Ouya). Alot more stable and dosnt keep the data stuck in memory.

Is there evidence of better behavior of SPMC on AFTV than regular XBMC? I just went to the official XBMC, but maybe I did the wrong choice! Is it possible to install it without losing all the preferences over current XBMC?
I'm using the xbmc with the launcher mod, and last night got the xbmctorrent to sort of work. It was making my firetv unstable, I had at least two blackscreens while using it.
I'm not on the latest xbmc but am on the latest torrent plugin, but at this point I'm not inclined to keep chasing the plugin too often, neat as it is when it works.

I have personally tried XBMC on all available platforms (Apple TV, Ipad, Windows 8.1, Android minix, Android tv box wih quad core processor and 8core graphics card capable of 4K output). Best one i think is windows.....it would be apple tv but that only gives 720p output.
Now, with Amazon, XBMC torrents somehow data is being saved somewhere and if you look at the screen before launching it, you will notice that the data file keeps getting bigger and at some point that would create a problem as AFT has only 8 GB memory.
With SPMC, I haven't really seen any increaments on the data file size...i wil keep you posted in the next few days if i notice any change
I've been seeing many of the issues with xbmc torrent that I've heard reported from others - problems downloading, issues where, once a stream gets into enough trouble, the box itself resets, very long initial load times.
I thought I was giving up on it, but I was curious and decided to look into what I was seeing.
Once things get bad enough that the FTV bombs out, I also noticed that I needed to reset my firewall to get anything going on the internet in the house - aside from things that were running before I started xbmc torrent.
I took a look, and my firewall has an 8064 session limit. What I'm seeing is that I need to limit how many sessions a single client can spin up. The xbmc torrent plugin is insanely chatty, and it was exhausing my session pool!
When things got to their worst, I wasn't able to get DNS moving and when I dug in, I found that what I was seeing was that I couldn't translate the DNS requests from my lan. (In some ways, the firewall I'm using is a gynormous pain in the butt - it'd be nice if I had more than 8k outbound translations - but it makes up for it with truly epic diagnostic info.)
So, it's worth trying to see if there's a way limit the number of connections a client on your network can establish. I'm getting decent performance and still having resources available to other systems using a 512 session limit.
My impression on the FTV rebooting is that once DNS was unavailable, other services I was trying to run were crapping out, taking the OS with them.

I have tried XBMC 13.1 official, BeyondXBMC, XBMC For Ouya and SPMC.
In all of them the plugin had made my XBMC go crazy and eventually reboot the entire Fire TV, on some occasions even corrupted my XBMC Skin settings somehow.

This is very interesting!
I have tried various combonations of this plugin (keep torrents, trying to save to SMB share, to Disk on Key, changing File Systems [exFAT,fat32,ntfs] and nothing seemed to work).
I have never thought of it as a network problem...
It works so good on my Windows PC and my Android Mini PC...
Maybe someone can post a way to limit the connections?
Thanks
Yeah maybe you are on the right track. My xbmctorrent also crashes quite oftenly and makes my firetv to reboot. It's very annoying.

Same for me.
Has anyone gotten the stream plugin to work? It's being actively developed and is apparently a fork of the xbmc torrent code.
I'm unable to get it to run, either on ftv or on a tablet, and the diagnostic logging doesn't say much to me.
My firewall supports outbound rules that apply per host, and the values it takes are sess-limit per-src-ip <number>
Probably you can do something similar in one of the open source dd-wrt platforms. There's an interesting discussion of advanced config of those at http://markmaunder.com/2011/01/26/h...-your-room-mate-or-bad-office-colleague-uses/ - but it doesn't cover sessions, but rather total per-address or per-network bandwidth. (Which I've also had set up to deal with aftv chewing up everything it can when I need to have a few hundred low-latency kilobits to reach the office - it's challenging to apply QoS to inbound, simpler to drop everything over a cap that's trying to reach a host. I unset those rules before trying xbmctorrent.)
I have the impression that xbmctorrent, at least, has its own torrent client built in. And although I've seen a configuration in the system / network menus that lets you define a proxy for xbmc to use, I haven't seen a similar config for global torrent settings.
Many standalone torrent clients have a lot of controls over maximum connections, in addition to upload/download speeds, etc.
I haven't looked to see whether a standalone torrent client, or one of the various torrent plugins for xbmc, might be able to give one systemwide control over session initiation, session timeout and session number - applying some settings that xbmctorrent would need to respect, in essence.
I suspect that they'd make it harder to use if they were able to control those things, though - xbmctorrent is doing something pretty unusual: it's polling a swarm of peers (into the thousands) and asking not just 'who has the file' but 'who has this specific piece of the file starting at time X'
It would be nice if those kinds of advanced network settings were available in the configuration of one of these video on demand torrent clients, though

Got a FTV and PVR problem hopefully you can help?

I have a FTV rooted with many sideloaded apps including xbmc launcher, XPosed and many more. I am running 13.1 xbmc. It runs everything great! It runs everything very smoothly! I really love my modded FTV! I just have one issue I need your help with. I have one channel from within LIVE TV that will not open and play correctly! I have WMC and ServerWMC as my back end on my desktop. WMC on my desktop opens and plays every channel perfectly. Even the XBMC on the same desktop as WMC will open up every channel properly and playback flawlessly. But, on my wired ethernet connected FTV client with 13.1 I have one Live TV channel that will not open properly. It starts with a blank screen with audio playing. Then after about thirty seconds in, the audio will stop too. Then if I open up full screen I get a scrambled mess of a picture. It isn't even a scrambled mess of the live tv picture. It looks like some other XBMC screen! It will only happen on the same one channel. Every other channel opens up quickly and plays flawless 1080p. I have mediacodec disabled as mentioned in other threads, but it still happens on this channel about 90% of the time.
The PVR developer had me disable the automatic deletion of the temp ServerWMC files so I could try to play the muxed files through my SMB share. I recreated the problem and then tried to play the files from the temp ServerWMC file thru my shares. Even when I try to play these .TS and .WTV files thru the share I get the same scrambled mess. I did this same thing with a channel that works perfect and the files played just as if watching from the Live TV menu. If I play the problem .TS and .WTV files on my XBMC on my desktop with WMC they play perfect. He can't figure it out so of course I can't either. There has to be something just not decoding these files from this one channel on the FTV correctly. It is wierd that it will work some 10% of the time!!! I have also tried 13.2, ouya SPMC with the same results. If any of you smart people out there have any ideas I am ready to listen. Luckily it is not a major network channel like ABC or CBS so this is definitely not a deal breaker, but would be great for all the channels to work! Cheers.

I know little to nothing about these PVR formats, but I'll throw this out there. Since you say it works 10% of the time, perhaps it's related to the current state of the Fire TV. Meaning, which apps are still in memory. I know the Netflix app has major issues if XBMC is, for example, paused on a video and still in memory.
See if force quitting all other apps and rebooting makes it play more reliably.

I went ahead a tried your suggestion of force closing all my other android apps on my FTV and rebooting. You know what it seems to have helped! I have been able to open up that one troublesome Live Tv channel over ten times in a row since then. It is so weird that it only effects one Live TV channel out of the bunch. I really appreciate your suggestion. Seems to be a good temp fix for now!!!!!!
If anyone has any ideas on a permanent fix I am still all ears! Cheers and thanks for your time!

Great to hear. Glad I could help!
The Fire TV seems to handle resources a bit inefficiently. I've found that usually when an app is "on and off" working, it's because something is running in the background.
Again, I don't know much about those file formats, but perhaps that one channel is just more difficult to decode then the rest (e.g., higher bitrate or more action). Since force quitting apps worked, it seems like the Fire TV isn't powerful enough for that stream. I think your only permanent fix will be to either reduce that channels quality some how, or find (sideload) an app that can decode it more efficiently.

AFTV ver.1 Video Playback micro stutters (local media files over network)

Ok So I have an AFTV ver. 1 Running Fire OS 5.0.5 and Kodi 16.0. and all of my media files will micro stutter (doesn't matter if the file is High Bitrate or not) my settings are as follows:
I have Audio Pass through enabled with Resample rate set to Low (my receiver can handle DD and DTS and the sound comes out as expected)
I have also set in video settings set display to match source refresh rate (i have tried both "Always" and "On Start/Stop")
For the Most Part the video files play fine, but every so often the file will micro stutter. All of my files are h.264 mkv's (either blu-ray rips or HD TV shows) The TV shows seem to do it the worst. I have searched the web for answers and can't figure it out. One theory that I have is that the AFTV can't output and any other refresh rate than 60hz so that is causing a problem with things that were filmed in 23.97fps or 29.97fps. If anyone has any advice for me I would really be thankful.
I may be making a big deal out of nothing, but coming from a WD TV Live box I didn't have any problems like this, don't get me wrong I wont be going back to the WD now that I have the speed of KODI, but I just want to know if its a limitation of the Hardware.
Edit I have come to the acceptance that it is a limit of the hardware. I grabbed my roommates FTV ver 2 (also updated to Fire OS 5.0.5 and running KODI 16.0 and configured it the exact same way) ran the same files and they played flawlessly. Looks like I will be upgrading.

I have the exact same issue running the aftv1, but using plex not kodi. I'll try my aftv2 like you to see if it makes a difference. It shouldn't [emoji2]
Try turning off rate switching. AFAIK Android does not yet support this.

I have tried rate switching on and off. Same problem. Doesn't happen on the FTV 2
I have no idea what is going on with your set-up but I can tell you that I have 4 FireTv1 units in my home and I can watch different content from my NAS without any issues at all.
I do not think we should be blaming the hardware......... just saying

Would you mind posting your video and audio settings? Also what version Kodi are you running?

I will post them when I get home tonight but honestly I do not remember doing anything special other then install zero cache. BTW have you ever use Raw Maintenance to clean cache etc. I will recommend using it once a week at least. BTW I am on v16 at the moment just updated few days back from v15.2

All that can be done from the maintenance tool add-on. Under general maintenance.

What about your video encoding settings, what file formats, codecs you use that work well...
Thanks for all of the suggestions, but I have purchased a Fire TV gen 2 and it has fixed all my problems. I have it set up the exact same way as the gen 1 and everything plays great

Well, you didn't "fix" the problem at all, you circumvented it by buying another piece of hardware [emoji6]

Sorry, been busy with my kids for the last few days. I did not change any of the video encoding settings from what I remember.

I meant the files you're playing, not the FireTV. I think it may be a combination of video/audio encoding and the FireTV1 not playing well. What container and audio/video codec for your video files? What does MediaInfo output on them? This may be the key to understanding how best to store media for the device...

You are correct, I did not fix the problem with my FTV gen 1. Over the past couple of days I had the FTV 1, FTV 2, and the Fire Stick (was setting up the stick for a friend). Both the FTV 1 and Fire Stick showed the same issues while trying to play large bitrate files. They would stutter. (not to the point that the file was unwatchable, but it was bad enough.) The FTV 2 however plays the same video file smoothly.

What about the stick? Is that Stick1 or Stick2? I mean, your results aren't surprising, it would be cool to figure out exactly why.

It is the firestick 1 and I am not surprised that it had a little stutter problem. I was more surprised about the Fire TV 1 that had a problem. It streams Netflix and Hulu just fine. I know that may be comparing apples to oranges
