Can't Mount SD Card - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just went out and got an LG G3 using Verizon Edge and overall I'm fairly satisfied. It's a beautiful device and the screen and the camera are both amazing, even over my Samsung Galaxy S4 that I was extremely satisfied with. The phone is currently unrooted and with no applications installed other than the included ones.
I've had a couple problems, the most major being that I can't mount my old microSD card on the G3. I had no issues with the microSD card using my Galaxy S4 where it still works fine. I receive a notification stating that an SD card has been inserted but I can not view any of the files on it and under the Storage section of the Settings app the Mount SD Card button is grayed out.
Settings in general seems to be full of issues, every time I restart the phone it switches back to the list view and when I attempt to open Developer Options I'm only given a black screen for about thirty seconds.

Format the SD card, likely Samsung formatted it differently, for the other, factory reset and replace it if it dittany work

It seems that the card is formatted to exFAT but I can't seem to get my Galaxy S4 to format it. Every time I click Format Card in the menu it unmounts the card momentarily and then just remounts it ~15 seconds later.

Can you yet formatting it on a computer?

I don't have access to a microSD reader. Are there any third party apps that can do it?

Your going to need to get an SD Card reader i'm afraid, reformat it in a computer.
Borrow a friends perhaps?

Just got a SanDisk Ultra 64 GB microSDXC. Need advice on how to format/treat it.

Hello all, as the title states, i just got a SanDisk Ultra 64 GB microSDXC Class 10 UHS-1 Memory Card 30MB/s with Adapter SDSDQUA-064G-U46A from amazon.com for their black Friday special for $42.
My question is, since I know it's 62gb, it needs to be specially formatted so I can use all of it the right way. Can someone tell me what's the best way in going about this? (Aside from having a note 2, I have a Mac, and little access to a PC, but I can get to one of needed.)
Also, does anyone here have this card? And what are your experiences with it if you do? Many thanks!

I've got one of those. You need a UHS-1 compatible card reader to use it with your computer, otherwise it'll just stop working when you try to access it.
Format it using your phone, and keep in mind that if you go from a stock rom to cyanogenmod or from jb to ics, it will present "SD card may be damaged. You may need to reformat it".
If that happens, boot a linux distro and use fdisk to change the partition type to 0x07, save and quit.
Then reboot into windows, connect the card reader with the card inserted, cancel windows' prompt to format. Open a command prompt and run chkdsk /r x: where x: it the drive letter assigned to it. Allow it to finish and your card will be usable again.

here is what you need for PC(if you can get to one)...this is a simple formatting program that will format the card to fat32 from NTFS...there is a limit of 4gb file size with this format..but it will make the card work with TWRP recovery...
http://code.google.com/p/nusad/downloads/detail?name=FAT32_GUI_Formatter.exe&can=2&q=
on edit...i think you are looking for something other than what i posted...what i have posted will format the card to fat32 making it usable with TWRP...if thats not what you want..ignore this... sorry
I inserted mine to my note 2 as soon as I got it. Never had a single issue with it.

Got that same card from amazon when it was down to $38. Once I got it, I just formatted it with a card reader to exFAT using my pc. Works just fine. Even did the directory bind on it already to move all my games to it plus put a few movies and tv shows on it. Yes its almost full...
But still no errors or problems. And its quick... enough.

If you install TWRP version 2.3.1.4 and up, no need to do anything to the card since it comes pre-formated to exFAT and works AWESOME!!!! Just install it through gooManager
that was indeed a nice deal hope u get it all fixed

im confused. no need to do anything special. what this guy said is truth!
I agree your card should work fine from the Evo 4G.
Assuming you have a PC, I would suggest copying all the content of your SDHC card to the PC. Put the card in the GN2, format the card. Then transfer the contents back to the card.
I don't know what you have on the card, but most likely you won't need everything. Some stuff will be specific to the Evo 4G.
I just came form the Evo 4g too, and this is what I did. The only difference is that I had this card in my Evo 4G instead of that 8GB that came with the Evo.
Thanks to everyone for their reply, but I found a great answer for others on using their 64GB MicroSD card with this problem in the future. I actually found the answer on another thread, but unfortnetly I lost the location.
So this is what you do. You can:
A) when you open the package to the Micro SD card, you can pop it into the phone and it will automatically format it for you.
The problem with this, is that it's going to format it into fat32 file system, but when you try to mount this in your Mac (using the included Micro SD card to SD card adapter), you will not be able to move files to the MicroSD card after mounting the card to the Mac. You'll be able to mount it and read files off the card, but will be unable to move files onto it.
B) You can format the card itself on a Mac or PC using Fat32, but you'll also run into the problem of moving files to the card from the Mac to the card afterwards. (You'll probably be able to do it on a PC, or Mac using a USB cable connected to the phone) but this may prove to be impractical to you.
The option I found works best ESPECIALLY FOR MAC USERS is option C)
C) Pop the Micro SD card into the adaptor, pop the Adapter into your SD Card slot (if using a newer Macbook pro). Wait for it to mount, and then open Disk Utilities and Cick on the Top root of your Newly inserted SD card.
Then click on the Partion tab.-> then Select Partion 1. -> Then enter a name to the right that you would like to Name your card. -> Then select ExFat from the drop down menu right below the Name Card field. Then select format. Viola. All done.
Your Mac will now move files to and from the card using your Mac (or a PC) without compatibility issues, and your phone will also recognize your card and write to it without problems. Any other method may cause compatibility issues when using your MicroSD card.
Hope this helps others out there.

that's wierd. OSX and read and write to FAT32. It's one of the more universal file systems in the PC world. FatEx is getting there, but it's not that well support in Windows, yet.
Thanks for the info nonetheless.

I had the EXACT same issue. Is it the one that is a UHS-1 class card with the grey and red coloring on one side? I thought it was my phone till i tried a different class 10 it (samsung and kingston) with no problems. Thats a sign of the card failing in the phone and you need to backup NOW! I ended up having to RMA the card to sandisk.
Came across this once on my wife's phone, I opened the back and took card out and did an old school Nintendo cartridge blow out and never had any issues after that.

[SOLVED][Q] MicroSD card not showing up...Disappears on some ROMs

As the title says my microSD card is not showing up on some ROM's. It is a 64gb sandisk card. I have tried searching for an answer in this forum and on google but have not been able to determine the problem with my phones storage. It works on my computer when hooked to the data cable in the phone. It also works when hooked up with a sd adapter through USB. However, I cannot get consistent use of it on my phone. Some roms it works and some roms I always get a notification that it is safe to remove my SD card. When I try to mount it in the storage settings it attempts to mount but immediately says it is safe to remove it... Also the card seems to always show up in recovery. I made sure the checkbox for mounting the external card was checked in recovery.
Seeing how it works consistently on the computer I want to rule out that the card is not functioning properly but who knows?? I was hoping to see if anyone else ran into a similar problem.
I have been trying to flash a couple ROMs to find one that has call recording with my GS3. I have narrowed them down to S3rx, z999, or Dandroid. They seem to be the only ones that have call recording, working bluetooth, wifi, and usb tether, wifi calling. One other thing I wanted was Init.d so I could switch my internal storage with my extenal to increase my internal to 64gb and make the external 16gb. I have not tried to do the switch yet so I know that is not causing my microSD to disappear from the system.
Also, if anyone knows of a good working way to switch the internal with the external storage?? I know there are at least two methods for doing it.
OR if there is a working way to make the GS3 allow apps to be stored on the external card??
Let the games begin! (God, I love this forum!) I am praying for an answer....:fingers-crossed:
I'm guessing that its formatted as exFAT, correct?
Only TW roms can use this format. It won't work in aosp/cm roms. Youd have to reformat as Fat32.

I have formatted it on my computer which I thought formatted it as FAT32. My computer just gives the option to format...it does not give me the option of formatting it as a certain type...
Am I wrong that it formats it as FAT32 ??
Oh and how about what I should do with either exchanging internal and external memory or is there a program that will allow apps to be mounted on the external? I saw one or two posts on google that claimed that one or two programs would allow a person to mount apps on the external but thought it may be difficult....I thought the switcharoo method looked easier on the long run...???
Thanks for your response Doc!
I wouldn't trust that it'd automatically format fat32. If you right click the card and select format it should open a small window with choices for quick format and a drop-down menu to choose the format you wish to use.
If you check the properties it should tell you what it currently is though.
Can't answer your other questions as I just don't know about it. Sorry.

Okay...I did figure out that my card was formatted to exFAT !!
You were absolutely correct in your assumption. Windows 7 automatically formated it to exFAT when I reformatted it a week or so ago.
SO to all peeps out there make sure you format your card to the proper format!! Download a program off of the internet to do the work for you...
I found this one that worked just peachy >> http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/guiformat.exe
ExFat can be used on TW based roms. So if you use touchwiz, its better to use exFat on 32gb or larger sdcards.
I like using the sdformatter tool from sdcard.org. just another option.

So I know you found a fix to your issue but if you do notice that your SD card begins to disappear again it might be the SD card itself.
I've read somewhere (great reliability sorry I don't have links) that on the GS3 there has been some issue with SanDisk specifically. I had two sandisk 32gb fail on me for no apparent reason and was wondering why they were doing this. I've already switched out to Kingston and I've not had any problems since. I'm not saying that this is the sure issue as my friend had a GS3 and used SanDisk and saw no issue but this is just my experience.
Best of luck to you and cheers.
I always just figured it was sandisk. That doesn't just happen on gs3's. Imo they just don't have near the quality of other manufacturers like samsung or Kingston.

[Q] Spotify - No SD Card Found?

So just recently, when I go to Spotify, sometims it says:
No SD Card Found
We found no place to store our data, please check that you have a working SD card and free space.
So first of all I do have an SD Card... 64gb. Second of all, a reboot always fixes this. Third of all, I thought Spotify doesn't save music to the SD card anyway without installing an old version before they got rid of the ability to store music on the sd card (something that's annoyed me about the app for a while but it is what it is and I'd rather keep my apps up to date than toy around with old versions of apps).
So, any thoughts?
I really would hate to think that the SD card is the problem for 2 reasons... 1) a 64gb sd card isn't exactly cheap. and 2) I've had roughly the same problem or a similar problem with EVERY SINGLE SD CARD IVE EVER HAD IN AN ANDROID PHONE. I don't drop my phone. i don't do weird stuff with it. I just put the card in the day i get the phone and leave it there and every single time for the last 4 years of being an Android user, I've had various sd card issues after some amount of time... Never this particular issue... But some kind of problem associated with the sd card. Used to be that installing apps to sd caused problems (i don't do that anymore). then it was data on the sd card not being accessible. Then it was some other stuff. Now it's this.
So anyway... any thoughts?
thanks!
Are you running a custom Rom? With the 64GB cards, the S3 can be a bit finicky. It's usually a formatting issue, especially if it's on a non touchwiz Rom. But most likely it's formatted as exFat. Try reformatting to fat32 and see if that helps.

Well.....If your running stock, it should read the exFat format just fine. Still can have odd behaviour though so I'd still try fat32. Just saying that exFat should work for you. Could be an app issue with it I guess. Let us know either way if that helps though.

Camera images never saved, disappeared from gallery.

To make a long story short, I took some irreplaceable pictures today that disappeared.
I have my camera saving to my 64gb memory card. I took a few pictures and a couple of panoramas and they ended up showing up glitchy and useless.
They didn't appear in the gallery with the exception of a few images.
It looked odd.
I rebooted the phone and tried to go into the gallery and they just weren't there. The previews showed up momentarily and then they vanished.
Now when I try to take a photo to go to my external memory, it works fine. It didn't pre-reboot.
Is there a method of:
A: Recovering my lost 10-15 images.
B: Ensuring that this doesn't happen in the future.
For the record, my card seems to be working fine. Music on it loads up quickly as well as any other images that I loaded onto it. Files open and there is zero lag. I don't suspect that the card is corrupted or anything.
Thanks guys.

I'm unfortunately on a Mac. Guess I'll boot into boot camp and install it and give it a go.
I hope the pictures actually existed as files though and not some cached object.
Update:
Overnight, the saving issue arose again. I'm forced to use internal storage when using my camera.
I've seen this problem before. So SD cards don't work well with Samsung devices. I bought a Samsung SD card and never seem this problem again. I recommend you do the same.

I wish I wasn't broke :/
I'm using a SanDisk 64gb. Guess I've gotta dig up some cash and get a Samsung.
I don't see how this is an issue though.
What is your card formatted in? My current is in exfat. I'm thinking the format may be an issue.
It may be a kitkat issue. Google "kitkat SD card write". Root users are using a fix that sets permissions so the sd card can be written to by all apps as expected.

Right before I came across your post, I found some info on the kitkat issue with sd cards. I'm guessing that's what's causing this problem. Odd because it's the default Samsung camera that's messing up.
Oh, how I miss root. I just hope we get root soon. I'm pretty close to selling this phone and hopping on Tmobile.
I had this problem happen with very VERY irreplaceable pictures, on my backpacking trip to china, one of the most irreplaceable pictures of my entire life was taken, appeared glitchy in gallery, phone reset and it was gone.
after taking out the SD card, and doing many deep scans to try and recover the deleted pictures, it seems the pictures arent there, which leads me to believe it somehow tried to save it in internal memory (which cant be mounted as a drive, so cannot be recovered).
if you can somehow flash an older version of android (like 2.xx) you can mount your phone as a drive, and then attempt to recover deleted data from your internal SD..
yeah all i can say is ,,|,, you samsung.
I too have the same problems as the OP. And I am on SAMSUNG micro SD card! Guess it is one of those first batch gremlins?
However, I think the problem has gone away after I switch on the image "preview" option. Give it a try.
I had the same issue with a 64gGB SanDisk micro SD card. The camera would seem as if it was taking pictures but nothing was actually saved; they just shows as corrupted files in the gallery. I lost countless irreplaceable images from our honeymoon because of this. Once I switched to a 32GB Samsung micro SD card I never had the issue again, also saving the pictures directly to the internal memory solved the problem. I use the SD card for music as well so it has to be something with the phone writing to the SD card. From what I've read it's a issue with the compatability with samsung and non samsung sd cards for some reason.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using XDA Free mobile app
Never had this issue with any of my Samsung phones (S2, S4, and now the Note 4). I'm using a SanDisk Class 10 32GB. I'd recommend pulling the files off the SD and doing a format. Download the App SD Maid as well for routine maintenance on your SD. Good luck.
My 64GB SanDisk SD card was giving unexpected unmounted errors, so I picked up a Samsung 64GB SD card. The unexpected unmount errors went away, but now I have this problem. Pictures are not saving to the SD card correctly. Sometimes it says media not found. Others the preview/thumbnail looks fine but the full view is just grey.
I am going to try saving to internal memory and manually moving to the SD card as I run out of room.
