Notification vibrations - do I have this right? (If so, wtf?!) - Moto 360

I've seen a few posts about this, but never a definitive statement, and it's such odd default behavior that I want to check I have this right:
- If you have app notifications on the _phone_ on silent or vibrate, then the _watch_ notification will be silent; if it makes a noise on your phone then it will vibrate
- There is no way to override/workaround this on a per app basis
?
This is really annoying if true since I have most of my apps set to vibrate only, and I therefore want them to vibrate on my watch..

I don't experience this at all. No matter if my phone is on silent vibrate or ringer, the 360 still gets the notification. [VZW HTC M8 Stock.]

Do your notifications vibrate on your watch even when not making a sound on your phone?
Mine definitely don't (s3), but if I turn on sound on eg gmail, I'll then get watch vibrations

This is how mine works as well, I am using a Moto X running 4.4.4.

Hmm so strange ... It's not like there are billions of settings I could have misconfigured. And this is with gmail (and everything else), so not obscure apps
Fwiw I found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/and...tion-watch-t2887718/post55687468#post55687468 with a potential solution.

Nexus won't vibrate!

My shiny new Nexus doesn't seem to want to vibrate, it's set to always vibrate when ringing and the keyboard should be vibrating. Anyone else noticed a problem like this?
Hoping I'm just missing some setting somewhere but it seems like it's probably a hardware fault.
Remember to make sure vibrate on touch is also selected (bottom of the sound option in settings)
Also are you using the stock keyboard?
"Vibrate on touch" is selected and I'm using the stock keyboard.
Does the phone vibrate when you shut it down or when it first turns on from a cold boot? If not maybe your vibrator is pooched.
Nope, no vibrate on boot or shut-down, I guess if it's supposed to be doing that then this one is definitely a dud.
I would say see if it vibrates when you adjust the volume down to vibrate mode, or try an app that lets you test the vibrator. But it sounds like it is a dud.
I have problem with vibration on notifications. I have set vibrate always, but when SMS or email arrives, nothing happend.
But touching bottom buttons does vibrate, even turning of and on or putting phone to silent mode by volume buttons.
That's realy weird.

You have to individually set those apps to vibrate.

anyone find a solution to this? my phone doesnt vibrate when i get email, texts or gtalk. i went in to each app and set them to always vibrate, but still nothing.
I noticed yesterday that if you use your volume buttons to put your phone in silent , there is a setting after vibrate where the speaker icon is crossed out. In that setting nothing vibrates. I was freaking out yesterday until I figured that out

I was having the same problem with notifications. I had the notification level set to vibrate and the messaging app set to vibrate "always" but it wouldn't work when I received messages until I restarted my phone... now it vibrates like it should
I also have this problem. My phone doesn't vibrate when I'm receiving a call, text, or email.
Mine wasn't working either until I selected Vibrate on Touch. Not sure why this was necessary.
I am having the same problem. Phone calls vibrate, also vibrates when shutting down, starting up, turning volume down to vibrate also vibrates, but no notifications (email, text, google voice, etc.) vibrate.
Bumping old thread because I'm having this issue now!
Phone vibrates for everything except notifications. Calls, touches, start up/shut down, everything vibrates. I've checked all requisite settings and it doesn't matter. Worked fine earlier today and it doesn't work now...
Edit: And just like that, it's back again. Several reboots and toggling later. Not sure exactly what did it, but I had downloaded several toggle widgets and toggled all 'round till it worked on a SMS.

[Q] Gmail 4.2 not respecting vibrate setting?

My GNex is running 4.2 now, and I've noticed that when the phone is on silent, the phone vibrates when new gmail messages come in. If I check the settings, it specifically says "Never" under vibrate settings.
Has Google changed Gmail's vibrate behavior in 4.2 so that Never actually means Sometimes?
Can anyone confirm?
I hope this gets fixed!

Yes, I have the same issue, for both Gmail and Calendar
It vibrates in ALL notifications. Someone knows how to disable it?
Regards!
Just a hunch, but I tried it and it worked. If you don't care about not having any notification for gmail (sound or vibrate) then set the notification sound to silent and vibrate never. Unfortunately you won't get sound if you want that, but at least it's not vibrating now.

I want to keep the vibration on for stuff like text messages, just not email. When I'm at work I can read my email on my computer, so I turn my phone to vibrate so that it's not beeping all day long. With 4.2, I've replaced beeping with vibrating. It's very annoying.

I'm having the same issue, and it's very annoying. I want to keep the image in the notification bar, but I don't want it to vibrate - like I had before the 4.2 update. I even tried toggling the notifications off and on and toggling between "only on silent" and "Never," but it continues to vibrate. I only want my phone to vibrate for text messages/google voice messages.
There is at least one bug ticket raised for this.

Star it to get it some attention.
Possible solution
Possible solution, for those of you who usually only run between sound and vibrate mode on your phone. Just go into the gmail settings and toggle the vibrate to "only in silent mode" you won't get a vibrating notification...
That's what I just set mine to do.

This didn't work for me. Always vibrates when in vibrate mode no matter what I have set. Funny enough, when I set the phone to silent mode there is no vibration even when it is set to 'Only in silent mode'.
I just hope this is identified as a bug and wasn't done on purpose. It's going to be an annoying few weeks while I wait for another OTA.
Any update to this? I'm having the same problem with text messages vibrating.
Same issue here. I have a custom 4.2 ROM flashed with this problem. I even tried reverting back to stock and reflashing. That did not solve the problem.
Same problem for me with official 4.2 OTA update, on a yakju galaxy nexus
That's no GMail bug, unfortunately it's a new "feature" introduced in Android 4.2. If you ar looking at the commits in AOSP, you can see it is a new system wide sound-to-vibrate conversion feature.
If you change the phone to vibrate mode, all applications which are playing notification sounds are then vibrating. Genious!
It should be possible to deactivate vibration therefor if you disable the notification sound in the specific app.

HTC 10 and Wear silent mode not dnd

So I've just received my HTC 10. Got it as a gift and it's an upgrade from my Galaxy S6. There is a lot to like, but I've found some very annoying things that I seem unable to solve. Like not being able to edit the Quick Settings and the reason for opening this thread: no way of turning off sound AND vibration while using a an Android Wear watch.
On my S6 I was able to simply turn down the volume until it went to vibrate and then press volume down again. That way the phone was entirely silent and only my watch would vibrate. Not so with the 10. It'll either vibrate or it goes to Do-Not-Disturb mode meaning my watch doesn't vibrate anymore either.
It's extremely annoying as I'm often in meetings with my phone on the table in silent mode. That way I get notifications on my wrist while the phone is silent. Now I'm forced to put everything to silent and miss calls and messages as a result. It totally defeats the purpose of having the watch for notifications.
As I got the phone from HTC I wanted to hold off from rooting it, but it looks like it's either that or going back to the S6. Am I doing something something wrong/not finding the right settings or did HTC just forget?
Thanks in advance for your reply!

Yeah, this is weird from HTC. On previous devices the silent setting would work exactly like the Galaxy S6 one. It's strange that in the 10 it goes straight to DND mode.
As a workaround, if you don't want to root, you can tweak DND Mode to allow every notification through and get it on the smartwatch as well. This is not ideal, especially if you want to use DND mode for what it's meant...

Unfortunately I also use DND often so this is not an ideal solution, but it'll have to do for now
HTC uses the same idea as Nexus device now, since HTC A9, which means the sound profile has only : normal, vibrate, and DND, no silent mode anymore; and the notification panel also followed Nexus, but don't worry, in Android N you can change quick settings in notification panel, just need to wait for 5 months.
Also, you can set up some apps, treat them as priority, so that they may go through. I don't use smart watch so I could be wrong. But this is just a problem about habit, once you get used to it, everything's fine.

The phone also vibrates on messages and emails. There are multiple work arounds, but none as quick as just turning down the volume and have your phone be silent. I don't want to dive into settings everytime I walk into a meeting.

you don't need to dive into the settings,
1: drag down the quick settings and tap on DND, only 2 steps;
2: press and hold volume down button, when switched to vibrates mode, tap on the bell icon, also only 2 steps.

Notification Vibrate Disabled if Ringer Set to Vibrate

Hi
About a month ago my phone stopped vibrating when I received SMS or whatsapp messages if my Ringer was set to vibrate.
Strangely, the option for notification vibrate becomes disabled or "greyed out" if i switch the ringer to 'vibrate'. (see pics)
It does vibrate just fine for a call- just not for notifications.
I am stock rooted, I was on 5.1.1 then updated to Marshmallow 6.0.1 -- no difference.
I've played with all the settings I can think of, with no help.
Any thoughts?
Apparently I'm not the only one, as I found this guy asking the identical question with a S6 edge on a different forum.
http://forums.androidcentral.com/sa...ion-vibrate-disabled-if-ringtone-vibrate.html
Nobody?
It's a strange glitch- no one has experienced a phone that vibrates fine for a call, but doesn't give the option to vibrate for a notification or text?
Some notification vibration settings must be set for that app. The screenshot you posted shows that notifications are set to vibrate.

Ah! Thank you so much for someone finally replying.
I must not have explained the screenshots correctly--- In the second screenshot-- I have set my RINGER to vibrate (as in for the phone).... and magically ALL NOTIFICATIONS GO SILENT (for every app and including SMS) -- not even vibrate--- and I lose the ability to change them to vibrate.
It used to be simple. Ringer set to ring, Notifications (whether for SMS, or any other app like calendar or whatsapp) would also ring. Ringer set to vibrate- notifications (again for all apps and SMS) would also go to vibrate.
Importantly I also would have control of the relative volumes/vibrations in both settings.
Now I only have that ability when the ringer is set to ring. If i set the ringer to VIBRATE--- then the notifications get totally silent-- -and are 'greyed out' so I can't change them.
It's weird.
Maybe I can't seem to explain it clearly, but I'm trying.
Thanks for the reply.

Sorry for the delay.
The answer is .... sort of....
The graying out issue never resolved, but magically it DOES vibrate now with messages. Perhaps that started to work with one of the updates I've installed.
Still seems bizarre to me, but as long as the functionality returned... i guess that is good enough.

Mute Sounds without Vibration?

Is there any way to mute all notification sounds without vibration? When I'm working I don't want my phone to make any sounds or vibrate while it's laying on my wooden desk. I'm coming from Samsung Galaxy devices and there was always an option to mute ALL notifications, sound and vibration. Am I missing something? Shouldn't have to turn on Do Not Disturb for something so simple that I'm sure many people use.

Why "shouldn't have to turn on DND"? What you want is exactly what DND does. No sounds and no vibration. You can even choose which notification can go through with priority mode

I don't understand why turning the volume all the down with the rocker turns on vibrate instead of just turning down the volume. DND presents you with a myriad of options that make muting your phone take more steps than necessary. My S7 had DND and I never had to use it, guess why? Turning down the volume actually turned down the volume and nothing else. I could even mute the phone with the screen off or locked so no I shouldn't have to use a "feature" that takes more button presses than necessary.

That's cool you could do that with the screen off. There's a couple simple ways to do DND from the lockscreen. One is double tapping the screen (or press power) and volume down all the way until you get to vibrate then press volume down again to mute which then turns DND on. You can also get out of DND with the volume button too. Someone mentioned this already. Or you can double tap to wake (Or press power), slide down the the notification menu, tap DND toggle. Both are not many steps really and no unlocking necessary.
