Help Please!!! Installing OTA Update on rooted HTC ONE M8
I recently rooted my One M8 (with no issues) using Hasoon 2000's excellent tool.
Yesterday my phone flashed up the OTA for KitKat 4.4.4 and I downloaded, but when I tried to install it took me to TWRP recovery where I selected the OTA zip file ran it but it didn't update. When I booted back into android the update flashed up again asking if I wanted to install. Tried again but no luck
Can anyone tell me what I need to do in order to install the update please?
Many thanks

HTC One M8 Toolkit
I'm about to hit my One M8 with a sledgehammer. I've been trying to root it with the toolkit but when I hit Get Token ID it says that the device can't be found. I've read through the whole thread and have tried everything suggested that isn't too advanced. I've tried it with two different computers and the same thing happens: nothing. I've installed HTC Sync Manager on both PCs and the software doesn't detect the phone in neither. Windows does detect it.
Any pointers before I murder my phone?

saved my ass again

I used this guide. After finding out my model is not compatible with firewater to S-OFF and not wanting to pay for sunshine, I had to use OTAs to update the firmware. You don't need to delete root access but you need to flash stock recovery back to use the OTA update. Its removes root access anyway but SuperSU is still installed.
I do think you need to unlock the bootloader to gain root through custom recovery as you said.

i have a doubt since you have closed the links for htc one m7 root toolkit does this one m8 toolkit work on m7 too??

rooting problem
hey i am using the htc one m8 eye i have unlocked my bootloader, the software status on the bootloader mode reads
device software: modified
*unlocked*
but shows s-on
after flashing the twrp recovery many times my device still doesnt seem to open up twrp and whenever i click recovery it boots back to the fastboot page in the bootloader, i am really stuck
can someone please guide how to go about this now? as i have no clue what to do next.
thank you.

Hi all, I just want to unroot my Phone. I rooted using this tool. How can I unroot? Just unroot. No flashing new system.
Thanks!

Rooting HTC One (M8) Question
So I'm trying to root my HTC One (M8), I've downloaded Hasoon2000's toolkit. I'm to the point where I am trying Boot Into Bootloader, but every time I run that, it says device not found. I have debugging on and everything. Any help is appreciated...

I need help unlocking the bootloader!
So I tried following the directions on htcdev.com but i came to the part where i type "fastboot oem get_identifier_token" and type it into adb and it just sits there at "<waiting for device>". I have done everything correctly to the best of my knowledge. Now i did a little troubleshooting and found out that my one m8 is recognized by adb when the phone is booted up and in the OS but when I go to the bootloader by typing "adb reboot bootloader" and it goes to bootloader and i type the command to get the token is says waiting for device again so then I typed adb devices and ithe phone is not recognized. I have no idea why this is happening so I'm relying on this Q&A thread for help. Tried googling and so far I've gotten "switch USB ports". I've switched it and it hasn't worked. I've also tried using the tool and i get the same result and i followed all the directions from the toolkit from step 1 to 5. Thanks in advance for any help.

Will this tool work with 4.4.4?
I have the latest version of Android on my HTC one M8. I was wondering if this tool is still effective for my phone?

Will OTA still work with root?
I want to root my ATT M8 and I know an OTA is coming early Janruary. I I do t want to have to redo the root and I want to make sure I still get the OTA. So should I just wait.

im trying to get my main version number but when i hit getvar all i get everything but my main version

will this work on HTC One M8 Eye ?

will the perm root will still work with the new AT&T 4.4.4 KitKat OS?
will the perm root will still work with the new AT&T 4.4.4 KitKat OS?

Being new does not excuse you from using the search engine. That is part of what you agreed when you signed to XDA.
From today, the only way to root the device is to unlock the bootloader with HTCDEV and then flash CWM and SU. Hack Kit was retired 10 minutes ago.
I also tried to free my Desire HD with 2.3.5 last minute, but came too late.
Every thing sat up fine but downgrade ruu download failed naturally.
Can I also use UMT to simplify the process?
Can you give us more detail glevitan on the other method?
I've been trying to get the acekit to work by trying to source a PD98IMG-GB2 ROM but I am hitting a brick wall. I can't seem find the downgrade file anywhere.
Thanks
Look in his signature. There's a guide linked.
If I use HTC Dev/HTC Easy Unlock Tool to unlock (set S-OFF)...
Can I then follow the steps describes under 14 d) S-OFF no custom recovery?
Can I then flash an ROM out of CWM or do I need to get root first?
Sorry if I'm a bit stubborn.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31211732&postcount=396
I think this hits my request, but leaves me with an half locked bootloader, so I have to flash boot.img each time I flash an custom ROM. Meh.
Is that correct?

You can't get S-Off with HTCDEV. You can only unlock the bootloader. Then, you still need to flash a recovery. You don't need to root if you're installing a custom ROM from recovery. You will need to fastboot flash a boot.img if you flash a custom ROM.
more a self-note:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1528925
I think that will do it for me. But I would do a nandroid backup in recovery, then flash the boot.img and then install the rom.zip.
Is it possible to directly flash CWM with touch?

AAHK was never sold. It was free and freely supported until it was retired this morning.
Yes. Download the image file from www.clockworkmod.com and flash it in fastboot

When did you do this? AAHK is retired and therefore no longer supported as of this morning. What happened? What state was your phone in before you started? What did you do? What did AAHK say? What does the bootloader say now? How long does it take to get into the bootloader?

You were supposed to run it twice, once to downgrade and once to S-Off, not try to flash a ROM after just the downgrade...anyway. If your phone still works find just unlock the bootloader, since AAHK is retired.

No offense against the guys that write these toolkits to make it "easier" but, stay away from it if you can, you don't really learn anything by using these toolkits.
That said,
Try and unlock the bootloader manually, as shown once when you sign up to htcdev.com and follow their instructions to get bootloader unlocked. OR
You can go for Sunshine S-OFF ($25) it roots, unlocks bootloader and gives S-OFF all-in-one.

It technically only temp-roots. You still have to fully root using a custom recovery or adb push. However, once the bootloader is unlocked, that is fairly simple.
I would actually suggest that as an upgrade, though. It would be nice if, at the tail end of the process, Sunshine would offer to permanently root the phone.
Hi.
Now I unlocked the bootloader manually and installed twrp as custom recovery. After this I installed SuperSU over twrp to get root.
*//
All works fine, but I have a little problem.
Now i cant take screenshots. If I try, I get the message that no screenshot can be taken because the app can´t save them.
Does anyone have some ideas how I can fix it?
//*
Fixed "Created a folder called screenshot1 and delete the other screenshot folder. Once it is deleted remove the "1" so it still only Screenshot."
Additionally, I want to make the SD-Card writeable for all apps, has someone a link to tutorial?

Hello! You can try these instructions that a quoted. But there have been reports that HBOOT 3.18 is not compatible with firewater, some say Sunshine S-Off is the only way left. Sunshine was created by the devs of firewater but they insist on charging (playing) for this one. In the case it is not compatible with your device they won't take charge you.
ETA:
Here's what I did for those that care
Purchased the phone from AT&T online
Received it yesterday. Software number 1.12.502.18
Used HTCDev to unlock the bootloader
Used this tool: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2699065
To Root and Install TWRP
Installed HTC SynManager and it installed the drivers. I LEFT HTC SYNCMANAGER INSTALLED. I was going to uninstall HTC Syncmanager if I ran into problems
Turned off Screenlock
From Developers Menu, made sure I checked do not put device to sleep when plugged in
Screen Timeout was set to 1 hour
USB Debugging on
Install from Unknown Sources was checked as well
My AndroidSDK folder is in the root of my C: Drive, I placed the firewater file in the Platform Tools folder and "Shift+Right Click" and selected Open Command Window Here
I followed the steps posted on the firewater-soff.com site
adb wait-for-device push firewater /data/local/tmp
adb shell
su
chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/firewater
/data/local/tmp/firewater
I DID NOT DO ADB REBOOT COMMAND
I don't think I did anything special, but in case anyone else has an AT&T Phone with the same software number, you could give it a try and let us know how it turns out?
Good luck folks!

Stuck
I cant proceed to the last step
"This will load the image to your device and all you have to to now is wait for your phone to boot the image. Once you are in the 'recovery' you should see a orange purple background.

Regaining root access on 4.4.4? philz-recovery and stock rom via htc one m8 toolkit
So I made the bad choice of upgrading to 4.4.4 already (or so it seems to be bad) on my unlocked htc one m8 phone.
I originally rooted on 4.4.3 with the htc one m8 toolkit and followed the root with stock recovery manual using the philz cwm recovery. I then decided to upgrade to 4.4.4. via the software update on the phone
Basically tried to upload the image again so I could root again and it just crashes at the fastboot menu. I also tried to load the twrp recovery and it just rebooted my phone.
The main question: do I basically just have to wait for some update to come about for the philz_recovery image? Or is there potential i'm doing something wrong on 4.4.4.
EDIT: fixed it.. for some reason couldn't flash over the philz recover image.. maybe I did something wrong, but I got the TWRP to work through a standard fastboot flash recovery.. Back in business.
failed root
Once you have the bootloader unlocked download this recovery:
Philz CWM Advanced Edition Recovery
Then go back into the bootloader (you can use the 'ADB' section of the toolkit) and make sure its in FASTBOOT USB mode.
Once you are in the bootloader you'll need to open up a cmd window.
Once that's open you'll need to type:
Code:
fastboot boot
(leave a space after 'boot') then drag the recovery image we downloaded earlier onto the cmd window.
This will load the image to your device and all you have to to now is wait for your phone to boot the image. Once you are in the 'recovery' you should see a orange purple background. Goto:
=> Philz Options (something like that. Its near the bottom of the list)
=> Root device (SuperSU) {its near the top of the list)
This will root your device or at least put the SU Binaries on your phone. All you have to do is reboot your phone. (Keep going back untill you see 'reboot device now'.)
When your phone is booted up just goto the Play Store and download SuperSU by Chainfire. Open it up and you should have root! This will keep the stock recovery so you can install firmware updates later on from HTC.
I hope this helped!

my m8 doesn't get to system!

hey. I'm a beginner and I think I made my phone completely broken. let's tell you the story; I wanted to root my device, after that searched a lot on the internet and decided to unlock it, unlocked it by HTC dev and it was alright. after that I installed TWRP 2.7.0.2
and got to recovery and installed superSU.zip after that I rebooted my phone and It got to system. I went to superSU and it said:"there is no binary code installed and...". I thought it is not rooted and after that installed it again and again and the same error from the superSU. I decided to install CWM and I installed the superSU from my phone storage and the same error from superSU after rebooting. I read something in another page of this forum that had my problem and I happily followed the introductions and installed the superSU from sd card and wiped cache and dalvik and ... . after that a factory format and boom the device didn't get to system after rebooting and just showing HTC logo and showing this red text in the bottom : "this build is for development purposes only. do not distribute outside of htc without htc's written permission. failture to comply may lead to legal action."
and I checked it by kingo rooter and it said your HTC_one_M8 Is rooted. do you want to unroot is? I told it yes and it said unrooting successful but when I connected it to pc again kingo said the same thing "your device is rooted do you wanna unroot it" ... . I tried to root my device before rooting in recovery mode by superSU.zip (superSU was not the latest version) by kingo but it was not successful.
after that I installed revolution hd and I thought that I crashed my original HTC one m8 rom but it didn't work and I don't know what to do with this disaster. I can get to bootloader and connect it to pc and detect it and do everything but I can't get to system. help me please. I told everything. my device is a HTC one m8 and I had updated it to android 6 and sense 7 and s-off. oh guys I think I need your serious help. thanks
Your main problem is wrong TWRP and wrong SuperSu that you installed on a Marshmallow stock ROM. But now you really in a mess ... what you can do for others to help you is post the fastboot getvar all result without the serial & imei no.
You may need to restore your M8 with a RUU if available or use a non-rooted backup.

How to root my HTC One M8 (Android 6.0)?

I would like to root my M8, it has the latest OTA update from HTC which is Android 6.0. I have the developer edition, from what I've heard, the bootloader is already unlocked right?
I've seen some guides but most of them are outdated or they are meant to be used with Android 4.4.4.
I must say I'm not an expert when talking about phones, so is there a step by step guide to root an M8 with marshmallow? I would really appreciate any help.
The bootloader screen will indicate the bootloader status (LOCKED, UNLOCKED or RELOCKED) near the top of the screen.
In general, the process is:
1) Unlock the bootloader by HTCDev.com (if its not already unlocked).
2) Fastboot flash TWRP 3.0 custom recovery: https://twrp.me/devices/htconem8gsm.html
3) Backup your stock ROM in TWRP - lots of folks have been running into bootloop or no boot after trying to root (but probably usually when trying to use an obsolete version TWRP and/or SuperSU - but it never hurts to be safe and have a backup).
4) In TWRP, flash SuperSU v2.76 to root: https://download.chainfire.eu/969/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.76-20160630161323.zip

Nope, that is just fine. S-on is perfectly okay for most mods, such as root, and flashing ROMs.
You only need s-off to do some very specific things, such as flashing modified hboots, manually flashing radio, changing CID&MID, downgrading by RUU, etc.
I have a simple doubt regarding flashing twrp. Does this means I can flash twrp through adb without getting root access to get root access.I usually root my devices using kingroot, works perfect for my old phone micromax. It also works for my htc one m8 when it was kitkat. But after I update to marshmallow Kingroot doesn't work for it,tried many times. If you could answer my question I would be very thankfull

after you flash TWRP recovery you will find option to backup it's too easy to understand how it works ( just check the partitions you want to backup and confirm your choices by sweep to proceed the process )
after you make a backup flash the latest supersu.zip from here ( choose TWRP installable.zip )

I think you're looking at some really outdated info or guide. TWRP hasn't been carrier specific for about 2 years; with Verizon and Sprint being the only ones you had to look out for. But TWRP was unified long ago (so Sprint/Verizon no longer requires a different TWRP version). You'll see from ahmed's link, that it specifies "All variants" of the M8. The exception would be if you have an M8s; and maybe another oddball variant or two (which are really different hardware). But as long as its a true "M8" the TWRP version linked by ahmed will work.
If you have any doubts or concerns about the M8 version, connect the phone to your computer, reboot to fastboot mode and do command fastboot getvar all and post the results so we can take a look (delete IMEI and serial number before posting).

no idea what to do there so I can't just flash the latest SuperSU from here?

No, you can't flash SuperSU without first flashing TWRP. Why would threads/guides tell you to do something that isn't necessary, if you can just skip it?
Simply put, you can only flash official "signed" files from the stock recovery. You need a custom recovery like TWRP to flash SuperSU.

and how do I back up my stuff in case I mess up?

Once you install TWRP, you can use it to create a backup of your stock unrooted ROM and user data. And its highly recommended to do so, before you flash SuperSU. Not only will this give you an easy way to revert/recover if something goes wrong with the root attempt; but you will also have a backup of your stock, unrooted ROM if you ever want it.
There are other ways to backup your data, but that depends on what "stuff" you are talking about (as that vague description doesn't tell us what you actually want to backup). For instance, for files, photos, etc. you can just copy and paste them to your computer as a backup.

If the method is firewater, it no longer works.

I'm not sure what are you talking about since I'm new to the whole thing I believe that firewater has something to do with S-off which is something I couldn't do because all the guides says download firewater and the links takes me to sunshine which i believe cost me money to do ? sorry correct me if I'm wrong but I'm just a newbie beside I don't need s-off right ? what does that have to do with my problem ?

Firewater was an all-in-one kit used to unlock bootloader and achieve s-off. The guys that created this went on to create Sunshine, leaving firewater project behind, so any guides from 2014 are likely obsolete. Unlocking the bootloader is as simple as going to htcdev.com, making an account and following the instructions there-it's super easy. S-off isn't necessary for most.

Firewater and the AIO (all-in-one) toolkit are 2 different things. Firewater is an (obsolete) s-off method. May have also contained a temp root, and some other things (can't remember exactly, it's been 2 years - and doesn't matter anyway - see more below). But firewater is not typically referred to as a "toolkit" or "all-in-one" (never seen it referred to that way, actually).
All-in-one toolkit (there are a couple) is a PC for unlocking the bootloader, root, and several other things (may have had a link for firewater, don't remember - again it's irrelevant for reasons below).
The toolkits are not recommended. They haven't been updated in a long time, and therefore use very obsolete files for TWRP and SuperSU (when applicable). You will have issues flashing many ROMs with old TWRP (and I'm surprised you haven't yet). Plus, you will probably find in bootloader and fastboot getvar, that the OS number is now blank (known bug in old versions of TWRP). I would suggest flashing the current version TWRP 3.1.1 using fastboot, to prevent issues moving forward. Current TWRP is fully compatible with current ROMs - but will not fix the bug of OS number being blank (need to flash firmware or RUU to fix that - but it's just a minor thing).
Firewater doesn't work, no matter what you do. It required an online server component, which the devs took offline over 2 years ago. Sunshine ($25 US) is the only current s-off method. But be aware, that most folks don't need s-off. S-off isn't needed to root, flash custom ROMs, and most other mods. s-off is only needed for very specific things, such as manually flashing radios, changing CID/MID, and some other things.
redpoint73 thank you so much for such a help truly gentleman much appreciate it .
It appears you can no longer use the usual method to unlock the bootloader. I just got this phone the other day in fantastic condition as a gift.
HTCDev told me there was an error or try again later. I'll upload screenshots later.
Not true... I used www.htcdev.com to unlock the bootloader of my HTC One M8 today.
I have this phone, with Android 6.0 and bootloader locked. However it has become practically unusable as it regularly powers off by itself, most likely due to lack of storage (there's only 0.6 GB left...). I've already uninstalled all of my few (useful) apps, I have no media on it whatsoever, but it is just filled up with bloatware that is pre-installed and gets re-installed automatically and that I thus cannot get rid of. I don't want to buy a new phone (it's in good condition) but from reading on the internet I understand that the only option is to unlock and root it, and put an oem on it exempt of all of these useless apps.
So my questions are, is this really the only option and if so is it still possible on this old machine to unlock the bootloader, and to get the right - clean - software for it somewhere?
I registered at HtC dev. There's a page that walks you through the unlocking process. So I should be able to do that part, if what FlexMcMurphy said in July last year still is true... For the rest, I'm quite new to this process but there are pages here on XDA that describe rooting and flashing. I'm ready to give it a try, but could use help if stuck.
Any reply/help would be wonderful !
Thank you in advance.
