Folders not holding apps on reboot in app tray - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know in prior samsung phones there has been the issue of setting up folders in the app drawer and after rebooting the first time the apps need put back in the folders again and then everything is good to go from there.
However, with my new note 4, I have to redo the folders every single time I reboot the phone. Is anyone else having this problem?

Same here, I've had to reboot 4 times since set-up and the apps are back in main menu and not the folders..

Yeah same here. I've rebooted a dozen times or so and without fail, there it is again. :/

Bump for this thread. I thought it was encryption that was causing the problem, but it seems that encryption was just the cause of the restart, not the issue. Using Nova launcher with a backup will fix this, but I honestly like touchwhiz better for time being (to each his own). Anyone found a solution?

Solved. Make a list of your folders in the order you want them in a notepad file. Go into the app drawer. Change "Sort by" from alphabetical to custom. At this point I deleted all my folders. Next, I went to the first page and began making my folders until I ran out of room. I then organized the apps on that page that fit into those folders. Rinse and repeat with the extra room until you have all of your folders on the first page with the correct apps inside. You can then click settings, edit, and rearrange the folders in the correct order. There may be a more efficient method, but this held for me after restart.

It's funny you mentioned this lol. I just went back into my app drawer and deleted every single one of my folders. I crated a new folder and used the + symbol at the top right of the folder creation and added the apps I wanted in that specific folder. I repeated the process until I had all my folders and apps organized. I had one app that I missed and added it into the appropriate folder after I was done with the rest. I rebooted the phone and sure enough all my apps were still in their folders EXCEPT for the one app I missed. I guess the moral of the story is to add the appropriate apps during the folders creation in order to keep them in there.

[Q] Installing Icon Collection Set

As for "theme", I am happy with just the default.
What I want to do is just change the icons. I have seen a ton of icon sets that I love, but no clue how to bring them in.
I am running Syndicate with Genocide. Before when I was on stock, I was using File manager or something to "change" the icon. Basically it was putting a file manager widget there instead of the actual app icon.
Is there a tutorial for jsut changing icons? Or maybe an installer?
I reccomend for you to try this.
0.) Make a nandroid in case something goes wrong[Optional, reccomended]
1.) Open up the roms zip file(not extract) in 7zip onyour pc, and go to the system/app directory of the zip.
2.) Open up(not extract) the apk you want to edit in 7zip, and the icons are usually in the res/drawable-hdpi folder.
3.) Rename the image you want to be in there to match the one in the apk, and replace the old one with yours.
4.) Then back out, save, and do steps 2 & 3 for all of the apps in that folder who's icons you want to change.
5.) Flash that zip in cwm.
6.) Reboot
7.) Report if it worked. If it didn't, restore your nandroid.
Thanks!
I will try that this week.
Ok, I will stay subscribed to this thread so post here if you have any problems
Roll Tide
Ok, so I am starting to run through this, and I thought of something.
By editing that ROM, I am editing the default icons.
How do we do the apps I get from the market? These would not be in the ROM.
For example, Google Music, or Accuweather.
Can we edit these straight on the phone? Or are we getting more into themes?
Shot in the dark....
Could I take my nandroid backup, copy it, open it up and replace the icons there, then "restore" this backup?

I dont think so. To edit the ones you get from the market, you have to copy from data/app to your pc, edit the apps icon, then put the apk back in data/app, replacing the old one, and rebooting

I am going to try this tonight.
Just prepping for it though, I cant see the folders when going through the PC.
Do I need to download a file manager, and on the phone, copy the folder to the SD card, then to the PC, edit, and repeat in reverse?
Yes, you'll need es file explorer, and you'll have to turn on its root capabilities in it's setings. Then you can see the data/app folders contents. Curious though, did you try changing the default apps icons already that came with the rom?
Roll Tide
I am hoping to do that tonight.
I will let you know how it goes.
I am going to do that first, then I will tackle the added apps.
K, and remember to backup before just to be sure lol

Ok, so tonight I tried some things...
1. ROM Package - I unzipped this and checked the majority of the apk files. I COULD NOT find the phone icon to save my life. none of the icons my epic has now with syndicate and genocide, I could not find. Any ideas where they might be? In the res folders, there are several combinations of the drawable folders.
2. I did a test of modding an app I downloaded. I took google music and the PSD template for the Illest Icon Set. I created an icon for google music. Now, I know the icon works, cause when I was using that other program to change the icon before I rooted (file organizer or something???) it worked. Under the res folder there were a TON of drawable folders, some were like v8, v9, v10, v11, etc. etc. There were a ton. So I went with the default drawable.hdpi folder. I found an ic_musiclauncher_normal.png and ic_musiclauncher_small.png. I changed the normal one, drug it back into my 7zip, yes to overwright, copied it back to my SD card (talking about the com.google.android.music-1.apk now), used ES to copy it from my SD card back into data\apps, yes to overright and rebooted.
When it rebooted, I got that default green and white android box and the application did not work.
I did a restore from my backup and everything is good now.
So...where do I need to look in the ROM to find the actual stinking icons?
And what am I doing wrong with the market apps?

1.) Phone icon is in DialerTabActivity.apk. DialerTab is the actual dialer part you open up, and phone.apk is the "in call" stuff.
2)Different apps use different drawable folders for their icons, but they are usually in drawable-hdpi. they are sometimes named "icon.png" or "ic_launcher_appname.png." I think the new icon you want has to be the same pixel size as the one you're replacing.

Yep, the one place I did not look. Thank you! I will try again tomorow, I have practice tonight. Stay tuned....
What is the reason for the same pixel? Is that set somewhere? The reason why I ask is people theme the phone out and make the icons anyway they want.
I gave you a thanks as well
1.) Yeah, two apks is confusing lol
2.) I'm not 100% sure about that, buut images can be resized to match the resolution of icons.
3.) THX4THX

Ok, so I replaced the phone icon with the one I wanted in the ROM's zip file.
Wiped the phone and installed the rom and kernel and my icon is there!
So success.
I did make the icon the same size in pixesl as well. 72x72
Nice! Glad it worked!
Btw, by doing this, you're dabbling your toes in themeing water lol.
Ya, I realized you are like Mr Miyagi, lol.
I do appreciate this, I would rather learn it then someone just give it to me.
Although, like the issue I had before cause of all the apk's, I could use some help with locating a few items....please
Here is what I need to find...
facebook
text messaging
calendar
settings
yahoo mail (is that standard?)
youtube
market
maps
voicemail
email
movies
I am going to start looking here in a bit (wife is making me watch jersey shore with her )
The rest of the icons I have are for google music, dolphin, etc....so I need to figure that out and why it bombed out on me before, I am assuming like you said the pixels were wrong.
screw it, I am going to try and tackle the status bar as well.

Status bar itself is in framework-res.apk/res/drawable-hdpi/statusbar_background.9.png, so if you don't know how to edit .9.png's, you'll have to find a statusbar you like.
The other parts of the notifiation drawer start with status_bar_ and are .9.pngs as well.
But some parts of the notification drawer are in twframework-res.apk/res/drawable-hdpi/

[Q] Can't name/rename folders. Any advice?

I've flashed CM10 to my SGS3, and when I first began organizing my home screen, I was able to rename folders with no issue by creating a folder and opening it - an editable label with a default name of "Unnamed Folder" or something similar to that would appear once the folder was opened. Suddenly, however, any folder that I create doesn't have a space to edit a name. Now some of my folders have names, and some do not, which looks really stupid. Any advice?
I couldn't get mine to replicate the problem.

Had the same thing. Go to settings --> Launcher --> Homescreen --> Hide icon labels <uncheck>
As long as that option is checked, you cannot label/relabel the folders. After changing the labels you can check it again and you will still be able to see the label, but individual app labels will not show.

[Q] App drawer folder question

Can someone tell me how to "empty" icons that are stored in a folder back into the regular app drawer? The usual click, hold, and drag takes me back to the homescreen layout page. Just as a clarification, I'm talking about folders contained within the app drawer itself. I know how to handle everything on the home screen. Thanks in advance.
~Vol
I finger dinked and actually figured it out myself. Posting solution just in case others are wondering. While in the app drawer, click the menu button in the bottom toolbar and select edit. While in the edit mode, the icons are being moved around only inside the app drawer which lets you open the folders and drag the icons out. My OCD self can rest again.

Missing icons

Hi guys,
I just got my g3 and something really strange happened.
I had the google folder on my homescreen and then deleted it, when i go into my apps i can't see the apps that were in that google folder.
I have to goto the playstore and open gmail from there. Is there any way i can get my icons back from the folder i deleted?
Just before anyone mentions, my apps aren't hidden. They're just gone
Those are just doors to your apps, you deleted the doors.
Just long press on your screen and a dialog will Pop up, go to apps and browse to the one you want, touch it and it should go to your screen.
Yup i know about that also...
I like to have a clean desktop...therefore i use the apps key all the time and access my apps from there.
Is there another way of getting my icons back to where all my other apps are?

Can't add apps/widgets to Nova launcher homescreen

Hi
I've just done a factory reset on my htc One. Htc backup failed miserably so I'm trying to manually reinstate my apps on Nova Launcher Prime. Long press and hold results in a popup of my homescreens in the background with no option to add apps or widgets. I've uninstalled/reinstalled Nova and checked the homescreen is unlocked but am pretty much out of ideas otherwise.
Any thoughts out there?
Thanks
go into
Nova settings > Desktop > Advanced > Lock Desktop.
That will probably be on so you cant add anything. Turn it off and you should be golden.
Thanks, but desktop lock is confirmed off. It's got to be Nova because I went briefly to sense launcher and long press works fine there.

Hi, Warthog01...
Have you tried this....
Long press on any home screen... all of the homescreens should recede slightly into the background.
Three options should appear at the bottom of the screen...
Wallpapers, Widgets and Settings.
Select the Widgets option.
** To add a widget...
...simply drag one to the home screen.
** To add an app icon, or a selection of app icons...
...locate the shortcut right at the top entitled Apps or Folder. Drag this to a homescreen... It will 'open' and provide you with a list of all of your installed apps.
Check the tickbox of those apps you wish to add. Then press 'Add' to add them directly to the homescreen, or press 'Create Folder' to add them to the homescreen in an untitled folder.
(See attached screenshots.)
Hope this helps.
Rgrds,
Ged.
Hi GedBlake
Whoa! That's different. Must have been awhile since I upgraded Nova as I've been using the old long press for both apps and widgets right up until I did the factory reset yesterday. OK, I've got your widget selection to work, but not having much luck with the apps. When I long press and the homescreens recede, there's no app/folder shortcut at the top. I see the apps/folders shortcut at the top when I click my apps box of dots in the dock, but don't see a way to drag either to a homescreen. What am I doing wrong?
Also, am I the only one who thinks this is a helluva lot more complicated than long press and select app/widget? There must be advantages--right?

You need to press the **Widgets button**, in order to see the Apps or Folder Shortcut.
It's in the Widget drawer... at the top.
(See additional screenshot).
-----
If you take another look at my second screenshot, you should see it at the top, between Nova Action and Activities. (All of these are Shortcuts, and are dragged to the Homescreen in the same way you would drag a regular widget. And they all behave in different ways when they're dropped onto a Homescreen.)
My third screenshot, is me dragging the Apps or Folder Shortcut to the Homescreen... out of the Widget Drawer, onto a Homescreen.
...and the fourth and final screenshot is it 'opening' and displaying all of my installed apps, and from where I can make my selection of apps that I want to add to my Homescreen.

Nova changed sometime in May of this year, with version 4.x, and with the developer adopting Googles Material/Lollipop design guidelines.

Thanks again, Ged. I'm a little slow, but I'm nearly there, I think. One more dumb question ought to crack it! I now see the app drawer and have successfully dragged it to the home screen, but there are only two apps in there! Presumably, I have to populate the drawer with all my apps for them to appear. How do I do that, please?

Aha! figured this one out all by myself. I had all my apps except two ticked as hidden. They're back now and I'm in business. Thanks very much for all the assistance--don't think I would have figured this out without you.

Happy to to be of assistance .
Rgrds,

I have another issue but don't know where to post it
I have an extensive hierarchy of tabs, folders, and folders inside of folders within my Nova Launcher app drawer setup. I'll just put it this way. I have 380 user apps downloaded, and only about 20 of them are folderless. It is all within 8 tab groups: Apps (contains app store and some stock apps), Web, Communication, Utility, Settings, Productivity, Media, and Misc. I may adjust this later. I'm using the identical red and blue icon packs "Tab Red" and Tab Blue Icon pack with the first four Tabs using only the red icon pack, and the last four only blue. It looks epic and is incredibly useful for finding what I need, but I've now spent a week trying to fix the issues that keep occurring.
I did all that work, taking me hours per day for about a week, and after each reboot, each day, the colors would reset on many of my apps, and every boot requires me to allow SD Card Write Access by moving files in ES File Explorer, or else the apps won't even appear within the app drawer (I figured this out 2 days ago). For some reason, no matter how I try to create a widget, the widgets will not show up, and when I finally get the widgets to finally work after restarting nova launcher and occasionally having to reinstall Nova and restore my backup. Even after taking all these steps, finally fixing the app drawer temporarily, My WIDGETS will require the same process to even appear anywhere. MY TABLET IS NOT ROOTED, and I am afraid to mess anything up (My rooted Note 10.1 2012 was basically rendered useless from lag and then the battery stopped working, so it is a brick that won't turn on/charge). I know there is some Xposed Module that allows users to enable write access by default, and you can use root to make external storage formatted into internal, or make nova launcher a system app, blah blah blah. I'm not going to do anything related to root, so if you know any way to fix this on 5.1.1 without rooting, that would be most appreciated. Basically, I am using my tablet for college and I probably won't root it for the next few years since I can't risk having something happen. If I can't fix this without rooting, then please recommend me a better launcher. I am really mad about these issues after all my efforts. Anyway, if you got this far, thanks for reading this and I hope someone can help.
I'm a newbie to Nova and after much scratching off head with setting up the interface I stumbled onto this thread. Thanks Ged for posting your answers - it's simple when you know how!!
Still can't add widgets to Nova Launcher. I even rooted and converted to a system app (app and prime both as system app). Widgets still won't appear on desktop. Lock Desktop is turned off. At a loss here as it happens both to my Alcatel tablet, my Stylo4.
Same issue, two different platforms.
