has anyone dropped their new Note 4 yet? - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

in case you haven't, let me share my experience:
as with most of us, i've done my best to handle my new phone with care, especially since i was one of the many that preordered the same weekend preorders were opened up. i have had the phone since launch day, i have a variety of cases for it, but not the most optimal case of course. (i'm a woman, it's hard to find fashionable protection.) i learned early on with the Note 2 and the Note 3 that the digitizers can be broken if the phone is dropped at just the right angle, so i thankfully have everything already backed up with Verizon Cloud, (call logs) SMS Backup/Restore, (texts/MMS) Helium, (game data) and Google+ (photos-- on low resolution, storage is unlimited.) today while digging in my purse, my phone fell out from about 3 feet up. landed face down on the hard tile of the womens' restroom. didn't think anything of it, because it was such a low height, just picked my phone up, plopped it back in my purse, finished shopping. (like a woman.)
when i went to check the time, i noticed the phone didn't respond. instantly i thought, "maybe i just need to power it back on, since it fell." held the power button down, 3 seconds, 5 seconds, 8 seconds, nothing. did a battery pull, left it out for about 5 minutes, replaced. nothing.
now, had i not had everything already backed up, i might have had a minor melt down, but i still had my S5 on me (literally, it was in my purse) swapped the SIM, and then cried on the inside. i put the phone on my car charger (generic model) and there was still no response, so i thought about if i should have my computer friend fix it or if I should go ahead and try my luck with insurance, with it being less than 30 days i hoped that maybe something warranty wise would still apply.
got home, put the phone on the charger. not that it needed it, but figured, nothing else could be done. did a few things around the house, then came back about 15 minutes later and saw that the screen had lit up and the phone was charging. lo and behold, i hit the power button, and it booted back up. insert praise dance here.
maybe Samsung finally did learn their lesson with the digitizers being so easily broken in the Note series. one thing that sold me on the Note 4 was the drop tests that were performed, which gave me (some) belief that i wouldn't have to deal with this problem. (link here for the drop test: http://youtu.be/Jj3Jy5ufhaY)
but in case anyone was wondering, it looks like it will survive a drop or two. and i have since thrown my Spigen case on there cause a chick will take no further chances going forward. (should, God forbid, the worst happen, i will update this post.)

No I personally hadn't dropped my phone yet, and hopefully I never will. I generally don't use protective cases on my phones, but I think I will invest in one once I can find a good aftermarket case that is made for the Verizon variant. Definitely don't want any scratches on this beauty

yeah, i've got one small unnoticeable knick in the metal edge up by the IR blaster. the initial case i chose left the top and bottom edge of the phone exposed (easier to handle) but i've definitely learned my lesson.

I beat the hell out of my note 2 for two years without a case or screen protector. Screen has one deep scratch about half an inch long and the corner chrome plastic is kinda mangled but I never cracked or broke the screen. Running my note 4 the same way.

I think that it's a matter of luck when you drop a phone. I've dropped two.
First one was a Sprint Epic Touch (galaxy s2, 4.5" version), it fell out of my jacket inside pockets right onto a tile floor. It made an spectacular sound, bounced a few times, and lost a back plate and a battery. Nothing else was even remotely damaged.
The second one was me bending trying to get some air in my car's tires, and phone slipped out of my jacket pocket (again). It landed hardly on pavement, but suffered only a minor scratch on the edge.
I wasn't even worried at the time - Galaxy S3 always felt like it was built like a tank, unlike S4 which I also owned.
This new Note4 feels durable in the hand, but the sheer size of the screen screams "fragile." That's "Fra-gee-lee" for uninitiated.

Nothing yet, and I am going naked, Neo Hybrid is reasonably thin, but it feels so much better without a case.
Sent from my Galaxy Note 4 on Verizon unlimited!

I love the feel of the n4 without a case but I learned my lesson of going case less when I dropped my note 3 from a very low height and got a surface Crack that spread over the next few days. I take it out the case at night when I'm in but when I'm out this baby is covered with a screen this large it will probably shatter pretty easy. To each his own though

YES! Before the DE came out, I was stripping insulation off a 12 gauge wire........
with my White Note 4 in my shirt pocket. When the insulation suddenly gave with a snap. The Note 4 jumped up out of my shirt pocket about 5 foot high and landed on the left front bottom corner on concrete then flipped over on it's glass screen face down. I was afraid to pick it up. As far as I can tell not a scratch on the screen but the Aluminum has a dent where it meets the glass. That slight gap may have saved the screen.
I am coming from the Note 2 and I had all my work shirts modified to fit the Note 2 snug. After the accident I have added a Home made Elastic Strap on top to hold the phone in place. I have not been using any case or screen protector because they slow me down and time is money. I got to be quick on the draw.

not yet... although i had a close call in the gym today with a 100lb dumbbell... i am not sure how long this is relationship is gonna work out...

As soon as I read that first sentence, I knew this story wouldn't end well

I got an Otterbox Defender case for mine, $44.99 with discount through verizon's website.. Absolutely love it, Otterbox has gotten a lot better over the years, and I've got huge gorilla hands so the extra couple mm doesn't bother me :cyclops:

Man I have the same case it's awesome .yea I have big hands too lol. Only thing is I ripped the built in screen protector out and replaced it with a normal stick on one. The built in one was horrible and made a loud click every time i tapped it. I have a cheap tempered glass one coming Monday hopefully it fits in the defender.

You people that go caseless are imho tempting fate and then are upset when your $800 phone shatters. I fix people's phones at cost that I know, most of which are iphones. At least those screens are fairly cheap and easy to replace. An Iphone 5S screen is $70 for oem at the local store. I asked about how many galaxy's they repair and the answer was very few. Why I asked, they don't break as easy??? No was the reply, the amoled screen is super expensive. A quick check on ebay......Minimum $170 for a Note 3 screen.
For about $20 you can get a simple thin rubber type case and tempered glass screen protector. You get both drop protection, thin profile, and screen protection. Seems like a no brainer, but if you have the money to replace such and expensive device I guess it's not an issue lol.

when i went to local verizon store to pick up my note 4, the rep who helped me dropped the phone 3 feets height to the table we were on while unboxing it!!! needless to say, i was unhappy and relieved that no dent or scratch found. that store was the only store that had white note 4 in stock and i wanted to beat the deadline to trade in my old phone for $200, so i still took it.

I droppped mine at the gas station. No damage suffered despite taking a perfect hit in the middle of the screen on the corner of a curb. I had a spigen tough armor case on it to lessen the blow to the edges of the phone once it bounced around on the ground and prevented any chips im sure, but the screen held up great and didn't receive the slightest bit of damage.
edit: this is the case i have. perfect amount of protection for me (SGP11139)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MAWQU14/

I got mine the Thursday they were released. I was using the Spigen Tough Armor case and had the phone in the pocket of my sweatshirt. I squatted down to look in a delivery box and the phone fell out from maybe a foot high - but it landed exactly face down. The s-pen still worked, but it would not respond to my fingers at all.
Fortunately I was able to take it back to Best Buy and they just swapped it for a new replacement. I'm using an Otterbox Defender now until Seidio makes an Active or Dilex case since the Defender adds a good 1/2" or more to the width of the device and has no kickstand despite costing $70 bucks.

The convert Is in development was my favorite note 2 case they never made it for the n3 though. I have a tough armor it's going back the kickstand is a joke, worst I have used on a supposedly high quality case. FYI I have the defender you know the holster can be locked and used as a stand right? ..

Thanks but I stopped carrying my phones on my belt a few years ago so the belt clip just sits in a drawer. I had Otterboxes and others and kept knocking them off my belt and causing them to fall. The final straw was when one fell in a gravel parking lot the same day I bought it and it chipped the screen through the protector. You'd think though for $70 that they'd include a nice metal kickstand on the actual case like Seidio does.
Yeah, I agree that kickstand was a complete joke. Everything else on that Spigen case felt inferior to any other case I've ever used too, but that kickstand was some awfully weak sauce.

Aw that sucks about the belt clip thing you got me worried I mainly use mine at the gym when I don't want the phone annoyingly bouncing in my pocket. I just can't believe spigen would release something so flimsy and half assed. I caught it on sale for 11 bucks and I still felt let down lol. Honestly the Verizon shell holster combo has the best kickstand in my opinion. Just wished it covered the top and bottom of the phone.

What a great case!!!

I tried after market cases and they just broke when trying to take them off my phone. So yesterday I went to T-Mobile store and bought the Body Glove hard case for my Vibrant. What a fantastic case. It is a 2 piece case and has the chrome frame which keeps the phone looking sexy. The case is pricey at $29.99 but worth every penny. And yes you can find this case cheaper on Amazon and such. I just hate waiting for things.
i was also thinking of buying this but 29 for case?? dam.
It is a nice looking case, but my friend has one and says its pretty fragile. It has fallen apart when he's dropped it. Id say there's better cases for that price.

Must not be the same case then. This thing is so incredibly durable and it is actually hard to take the case apart after it is snapped on.

My friend said the exact same thing. He said the plastic chrome frame was real cheap. he bought it at the TMO store.

Well that sucks. Wonder if he just got a bad one? I have to use a flat head screwdriver just to take this case apart lol. As far as the price goes, $30 is high but the case will really keep your phone from breaking.
I just paid 12 shipped. Shop around. I am on my second one. I won't use anything but this case. My phone fell out of my hands and the case cracked but the phone didn't have a scratch on it.

I also use this case religiously, even right now. Yes, i need to use either a flashed screw drive or a key to pry it open, but it's a sad day on merryville. just the other day brushing my teeth, my phone slipped from my hand from a standing position and landed on a carpeted floor. It landed in such a way that it just poped off (the plastic chrome front) and i now have a hair line scratch on the lower left of my screen. :-(
I babied my vibrant, and to have this happened saddens me!
Some how in the momentum of it popping off, scratched my screen. This is why i paided $30 so this wouldn't happen. Should i call the company?

Man that sucks! I would call and complain. If that happens to me I will go straight to the T-Mobile store where I purchased the case and complain.
These are the exact issues I was referring to. It seems tight, but it wont hold up under a fall, and when it does pop open, you're phone could easily fall out or get scratched by the case itself.
I own this case, got it shortly after seeing it in the Tmobile store. I got it off ebay not sure what i paid for it exactly. I've dropped my phone 2 or 3 times since i've owned this case and (knock on wood) each time, the case has stayed together. My heart stopped each time as i watched my phone bounce off concrete and tile but the case has never failed me. The kicker for me was i wanted a phone i could attach to my belt as i've become addicted to havin my phone on my belt and i really hate the feel of alot of stuff in my pocket. On the bonus you get a replaceable piece to flip out if you dont want the belt clip portion and rather a smooth pocket case.
As for my only problems with the case id say first and foremost is its rather bulky. It makes the phone feel really protected but almost feels like twice the phone in your hand with the case on. That and as i've dropped my phone i've noticed the chrome is starting to peel on the cases front.
As a tip i've always wondered what the cutout on the right side towards the bottom was for. All the other cutouts go to something... i.e. power buttons/volume buttons/3.5 headphone jacks.... but that cutout goes to nothing!? Well i started shoving stuff in it and found a coin fit perfectly and could get the case off easily with a little twist.
you dont know what your talking about i bought the vibrant in november and i bought that case + a screen protector that case is perfect for the phone your friend is just rough on things... ive dropped the phone from like 5 feet like 30 times still fine
I bought this case offline for 12.99 and free shipping. The flimsy chrome cover (piece 2 of 2) wont clip on in one place. Come that way, factory. Hopefully T-Mobile will trade me out in the store since the box is T-mobile branded.

How do you guys stand phone cases?

Last month I dropped my phone on bricks which cracked the screen badly. I got the screen repaired by Samsung but the sides bordering the bezel still have some scuffs. I put on a case to cover up the scuffs (and protect the phone too) but I really hate it. My phone is bulkier, I have to take off the case to get access to the battery and the case collects a ton of dust. How do you all survive with a case on your phone?

You have to shop around to get the right one. I bought the kickstand version offered by Sprint, it adds very little bulk, offers full access to all ports/buttons, slides easily in and out of pockets (isn't gel) and it has a kickstand (did I mention that already?).
Now, if I drop my phone on pavement from a high enough distance it's probably not going to offer me the same protection those huge, bulky otter box cases offer but I'm willing to take my chance.
easy i like to keep my phone in good shape. sure its slim profile is nice but is it nice all scratched to hell? lol i had/have a ballistics case which makes it really bulky, i got use to it and could slip it in/out of my pocket. Now i have the tpu extended battery case and its fine also.
I use silicon cases. They don't add very much size at all.
I just use the cheapo gel case i mean it slips off when I need to, stays on the rest of the time. It absorbs the impact in ways hard cases can't. But yeah the trade off on those is its about twice as thick as the thinnest hard case which really only helps with scratches.

I agree with this. I have a silicon Tough Case (TC). Bought it from amazon for like $10. It is light and very thin. With the thin profile of my phone, with the case on ts still thinner than most other smartphones without a case. But i here were your coming from it is way better bare back.
Ive had mine since release day. Never once put a case on it. Dropped it pretty good at least 10 times and still no screen cracks or major dents. I will say that "Cheap plastic" helped it a ton. Try that with your glass iphone or metal framed phone, I bet you will get screen cracks and paint chips and large dents. I hate cases. Also I advise anybody and everybody to get their phone from Besy Buy Mobile. Their insurance is deducible free and virtually unlimited (every two weeks you can smash your phone to smithereens if you want) Cant go wrong. Never need to worry about a case or screen protectors.
Honestly the first time you drop it good with a case you just made your money back, so that helps me. Not to mention the Trident Aegis case = a hair thinner than the og evo. Sure, it isn't all sexy and skinny, but it'll still be beautiful years from now
I actually prefer my epic 4g touch with my tpu case over it being naked. But the the case has a very small form factor. On my OG epic I didn't like a case though.

I use this thing. It takes an extra second to put it back in but I know it's secure.
I'm in construction (electrician) so I need something that won't slip from my hands while perched atop a ladder and won't get scuffed when clipped to my tool belt. I will gladly clean the case on a regular basis rather than lament a dirty, scuffed, and hard to replace rear panel. (Hard in terms of getting a new one.)
If I didn't need it for work, I would probably get one, albeit a thinner, more subtle one.
I look at it as a give and take. Sure I give up a little in terms of looks, but when it comes time to upgrade to another phone I am always able to get top dollar for my old phone.
Give the Sedio Active case a try. It is reasonably thin and you do not lose sensitivity on the volume and power buttons.

I got my phone in Dec after not having a phone from Feb - Dec last phone was iPhone 4, tried adding a line during black friday's .01 cent cell phone sale and amazon rep told me sale went until Dec 5 when tried to purchase it they said I was wrong, took 3 sup's before one actually said they do record every conversation and then hear the rep tell me the wrong details however thye where good on the .01 sale.
Got the phone and was given a zagg screen for Christmas and when I dropped it in March and it broke the glass I was glad I had the screen because it kept it in tact until I got the replacement for the $100 insurance so now I have extendable battery in order totally use the phone as intended but no extra case fits.
I like the extra weight and size the ext battery adds feels better in hand but totally believe in zagg screen for occasional dropping if there was an otter box for safety that would support ext batt I would totally get it since I've dropped the .01 and had to pay $100 for new.
I will say this about the screen, since it was already broken I tried scratching it with everything from a screwdriver to a chisel point file and it would not scratch makes me wonder why it is so fragile it breaks when dropped. Only reason I would use the zagg screen is to keep the broken glass in place otherwise I wouldn't have a screen cover.
I have a baby and he grabs my phone, bangs it on things, and knocks it off tables. My case and screen protector are a necessity.

Matte TPU case adds virtually no bulk to the phone at all. It's really a perfect fit and looks great. Twice over the last 2 days I asked friends if they liked my case and they replied, "what case?". That says it all.
I got a cheap ass case from eBay, solely for the purpose of making my phone weigh something. It adds almost nothing, maybe a 1/8 inch. But, I must say I like it a lot. My kids dropped my phone twice, and not a single scratch. The case held like a champ. Well worth the $6 I paid for it.

Why I love my otterbox.

sgs3 white 16gb
black case, got the phone on first day, went to best buy every day untill they had the commuter in stock.
so you can figure out when that was, but i think its a few months or so.
that is how long this case has not left my phone.
I work prewiring houses, use tools all day running up and down the stairs.
now and again, ill stick a set of pliers in my back pocket, the same pocket as my phone is in.
i had a friend, she was skateboarding with here evo 3d in a defender, and she was going quick, but hit a rock and fell, and slid on concrete on top of her phone and slid. case had some serious gashes in it, and obviously no damage to the phone. well its the same plastic but less of it. but enough for me not to worry when my phone falls about 4-5ft on concrete, and maybe 10 feet onto plywood. this has happened many times.
yeah, i love it.
buttons are a bit hard to press, it gets a little better after a bit, im used to it by now, but its nowhere near like anything like on my sgs2 bonefish case, which was awesome, not nowhere near the protection.
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Titan...48205082&sr=8-1&keywords=epic+touch+bone+fish
well, if anyone cares, after all the abuse of my otterbox commuter, it looks beat up now, and the screen protector that came with it needs to go.(but it held up great, its not glass, but its pretty hard). never looked back. will post pics tomorrow if people care. Defiantly thinking of just getting another otterbox, this one is scratched to hell.
but all that aside, there is not a doubt in my mind, that when i take of the case, the phone will be spotelss.
Cheers.
Waiting on my Otterbox for my S3. Been planning on getting one glad I waited. Two reasons 1, they are super cheap on amazon (lame that have to pay tax now). And recently my otterbox for my G2 broke.. They do not make the case anymore, so the replacement will be for my S3. Just wish it would come. I have the Zagg HD protector on the screen. Most important. Always put it in pocket byitself, so the rest stays good.
Was going to get the defender, but heard that the included screen protector makes the screen look like poo.
I have the green one and love it. I actually like the stiff buttons because I watch a lot of videos and it prevents me from hitting the buttons all the time. And actually in time they get easier to push. I just ordered the seido active for the kickstand.

Try doing without and ending up buying a new phone... ouch, the wallet won't like it

[Q] S3 Screen break..beware.

Hi, sad situation for me...bought the S3 last Wednesday. Phone slipped out of pants pocket yesterday, screen completely shattered, on impact with floor. The phone was a hardware upgrade, so it cost me virtually nothing for the phone, however, now I have lost the warranty, and my repair bill to fix the screen is going to be approximately $300 and $40 to get the repair estimate. I used a credit card to pay for it which has insurance only up to what I paid. So after repairs I will have a non warranted phone and out of pocket $$$, so much for my hardware upgrade phone cost saving. Even if I purchased the protection plan I would be out $200, and no warranty either. Sadly, 2 service reps said they have the same phone and their kids play with it and drop it all the time. I guess I must be the lucky one who got one with defective glass?? Heres hoping nothing happens technically with the phone over the next 3 years.
Any one else have glass issues?
Nope. Buy an otterbox. Its 50 dollars and will save you the headache and money if you have a case of the butter fingers.

Jesus, ever heard of a case? I purchased an Otterbox from the day they released it for the S3.
Next time get a case of some sort, problem solved.

Sorry about your phone.. But next time it's time to use a case that's has a good amount of protection depending on you....
As for maybe having a defected screen that you think broke to easy... It all depends how the phone /screen hits the ground and what type.. I saw them gorilla glass demos how it can take a good beating and how much pressure it takes to cracked the screen.. I think that's just marketing.. They don't demo it with a phone that's why we have people in YouTube for that lol.. Some people screen break from a 2 foot fall..
Otter box is waste of money and bulky. Get the speck candy shell, its slim, and shock absorbent.
Yeah I was looking for a case, guess I didn't realize how fragile the glass was....gorilla you say....lol
i have always liked the casemate pop series

I doubt the glass was defective, its been shown that if the phone falls a certain way the glass will shatter, generally if you drop the phone naked from a pretty considerable height more then 3 feet, and it hits one of the corners generally the top, the glass will shatter. Like everyone else has said get a case. Ive dropped my phone a few times now still looks as new as the day I bought it, I recommend TPU cases from Diztronic or SGP, thing enough and provide a decent amount of drop protection.
I have an otterbox commuter case and my phone just survived a car accident.
It flew from the console, hit the dash, bounced to the deploying airbag bounced off the rear glass and landed in the drivers footwell.
Yup, really fragile this phone.
I have a defender series and personally I don't notice the bulk that much, if u really cared about the bulk why even have a case ? Just get invis shield and call it a day. Only real downside of an otter box is that the open areas,I.e. home button cameras and speakers/mics get dirty and have to be cleaned.

I've found the screen protector that's built in to the Defender doesn't seat properly on the screen (most likely due to the slightly concave screen). I just popped the screen protector out, installed a screen protector on the phone, good to go.

You watched the phone do all this in the middle of a car crash?
Sent from my S3
lol that's funny !
REALLY sorry to hear about your screen! That really sucks! I put a Trident Kraken AMS on mine and have dropped it twice on concrete, Barely a scratch; cost me $30.
The Gorilla Glass was never designed to survive that type of fall. It's designed to resist scratching(against items with the same strength), and that's about all.
Get a decent case, it really is worth the extra bulk

Drive cam.
Its a camera mounted low on the windshield with both a forward and rearward facing wide angle lens to save or cook your bacon in the event of a crash.
I'm not superman.

Question How Slippy!?!

This is the first phone I have ever thought that I will NEED a case for. Never had one on any of the many phones I've had, never cracked a screen, hardly ever drop.
But this thing is EXTRA slippy, loved the brushed feel of my 4XL, not liking the slimy, slippy feel of this. It literally jumps off every surface its put down on!
Anyone found/using a really thin case or any kind of grippy stickers etc? Pics?
I agree. Moment I took it out of the box my first thought was this thing is gonna face plant before I finish setup. Put it back in the box and waited a day for case to arrive.
Got Spigen Liquid Air. Fits very well, not too bulky. Upgraded from 4XL as well.
Very very slippery. Mine has already fell from a level surface, face first. It was the combination of the camera bump + vibration from notifications lol No damage tho.

Don't lie! Your soul has been damaged, you died inside a little. I know I would have.
The thing is ridiculous. Never seen anything live it. It's like a bar of soap coated in baby oil. Jesus Christ help anyone thinking of going naked with this one. RIP.
Nice phone all in all. The software feels like beta. Even with this beta software the camera is finally better than my p50 pro huawei. So imagine when the software matures. This phone will be a killer. Right now people should wait for the software before getting. Surprised google released these bugs
Haha I was in shock when it fell. Now I'm very careful to place it on something that isn't a flat surface.
It's super slippy slippery slip slip and to be honest I am over this kind of approach to cell phones. This has been going on for years and has never once proved itself useful. Some kind of light frosted glass back or ridges? Yeah some kind any kind of slip resistance would be welcome but again and again we come back to this.
Slippery as a frozen lake ! Case recommended!

I had the same experience with my Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ a year and a half ago, which I only bought because my Pixel 1 wasn't supported anymore and Google hadn't yet come out with a 512 GB model like the P6P I now own.
Because I ordered my wife's and my Note 10+'s right as COVID lockdowns started, it took a long time for me to find a reasonable price for an OtterBox Defender case, which is my preference and I doubt that will ever change. I don't normally drop my phones. In the time without the case, I dropped the phone, or it slipped out of my hands, or even as you mentioned, slid right off several level surfaces in my house, and as @lawtq said, I whimpered each and every time although there was never any damage, thankfully. I think I just got lucky with that.
This time I'm glad someone here turned me onto getting the OtterBox Defender case from Verizon, since it's out of stock everywhere else, and listed more expensively everywhere else too. I'd rather have the non-Pro Defender, and rather in blue, but I ordered the case and got it a few days before the phone arrived.
Fun fact: If you just Google "Verizon OtterBox Defender Pixel 6 Pro" now, and go to the first search hit, it shows the normal price of $59.99 and out of stock, but if from there you choose "OtterBox" in the Verizon navigation breadcrumbs near the top, you can find the $44.99 in stock one just fine, and it doesn't even show the duplicate page for it that's higher-priced and out of stock. I'll assume it's either a Verizon or Google screwup or both.
