FAQ:
How to find the ota?
If you're rooted, wait for the device to prompt you to update, then check /cache for the file
If you're not rooted, wait until the same time and do an adb logcat and look for a line with .zip in it
Why isn't the latest ota listed?
We can only list what we have, if the ota from Build X to Build Y isn't listed, we dont have the file for it yet.
How do you setup adb/fastboot
Please read the stickies in the general subforum, this is not a formal guide
Do I need to unlock the bootloader to flash the update zip?
Yes, if you wish to do it manually.
If you allow android to prompt for the update, you do not need to unlock
Can I flash this if I have a custom rom?
No, you must be on a stock AND unmodified rom
Can I flash this if I'm rooted?
Only if you have not modified any files

Sorry if this is the wrong place for this question, but will this process, once the files are available, allow for a complete manual reloading of the system software onto the watch? Mine had been baggy and freezing from the moment I got it, but I can't exchange it since Best Buy is sold out. (My thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2945007
Must have gotten a dud. Any ideas?)
If this process will allow me to reload everything from scratch it may be with not returning it yet and waiting to see if this can be done soon.
Do people usually compile and release these files rather quickly after getting the watches or do we have to wait for Asus? Sorry for the newb questions...

You would need a custom recovery and a full rom update.
If I had a unit I could make the latter, but I don't have one.

I have one, is there any way I can help get those URLS?

If you get the notification for system update, plug it into your computer with debugging enabled and type the following:
adb logcat | grep zip
This will work for Mac/Linux, command may vary for Windows.

I was able to activate the ADB debugging and get into fastboot and recovery. Its pretty much the same process for most phones. fastboot oem unlock works too, and as usual, erases all data.
Go to Settings -> About -> Press Build Number 7 times -> Swipe right, Developer Options now shows under About.
Theres a few different options ding an Asus utility to check sensors and such.
To get into recovery or fastboot, you need to active ADB Debugging, unplug the watch than plug it back in, then run "adb reboot recovery" or "adb reboot fastboot"
To unlock bootloader, you need to push the reset button on the back to select.
In recovery, swipe right to left to show screen, up and down to select, and left to right to select.

Nice, I'm going to do this when I get home.

You might want to watch this androidpolice.com post for updates. Nothing for the Zenwatch yet but hopefully they'll post the OTA once it launches. http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/12/11/android-wear-lollipop-ota-roundup/

NOTE - Started a new thread regarding rooting, custom roms, and custom recovery research i have done, in the forum "Android Development", So i dont overtake this thread
I spent a lot of the weekend trying to root my Zenwatch (on 4.4.2w), or get a custom recovery working. Here's what I have tried and found out so far. They locked it down pretty damn well.
The kernel source and ROM source are not available anywhere.
There is no way that I can find to get root. I even went as far as loading towelroot onto the watch through adb install, but it just hangs and eventually closes.
There is no way I have found to build a custom recovery with CWM or TWRP.
There is no way I have found to dump the boot or recovery partitions.
There is no su binary preinstalled. Attempting to link a su binary has come up null.
dump_image binary is not installed, nor can you get it to install.
Trying to install any packages through stock recovery gives signature error.
Trying to use dd command to dump boot or recovery ends with "permission denied"
Trying to use "fastboot oem saveprt2sd recovery -n recovery.img -a" ends with "invalid page size". Same with trying to dump boot in this fashion.
Trying to boot either the LG G Watch or Samsung Gear Live unsecured boot images comes back with "(remote) dtb not found"
I believe that unless they release either the kernel source or the full ROM source, we are unable to root or modify any options.
Which really sucks, because the "OK Google" screen is REALLY F****** BRIGHT.
if anyone has success, please share

Sorry, I guess I meant, how do I connect it? Can't get it to recognize through the charging block.
EDIT: Nevermind, had to enable ADB debugging. Flashing now!
EDIT 2: Worked! Big thanks to hedsick for getting the OTA!

Just updated my watch with the link on android police, for those that don't know the update process it works like the g watch, enable usb debugging from dev options, make sure adb drivers are installed (universal adb .73 can be used) adb reboot recovery, then tap the watch face, swipe down to apply update from adb, swipe left, then on pc type adb sideload ota.zip

Op updated with LWX48S
I still dont have any info on the initial rom, or any rom after it.
If anyone could provide a dump of KNX01W, or LWX48S that'd be great (preferably the former)

Everything I need (in order of importance):
dump of /system
bootloader version
partition table (there might be an unused baseband partition)
dump of bootloader
dump of baseband (if it exists)
Preferably for the initial rom, though as I have nothing even a dump LWX48S is acceptable until someone can provide the initial rom.

Adb pull of /system, everything else on the watch is read-protected

[HOW-TO] Root the Shield TV

First of all, let me say this isn't my post, and I didn't develop this method. The user, "Teletype" got this all figured out and did an amazing write-up for it. I'm posting it on their behalf so it can be in this newly added forum. The link to the recovery zip is also in his original thread, which I've linked below.
Here's the link to his original thread. If you feel the urge to press "thanks", please go to his original thread and press it for him, he deserves all the credit.
teletype said:
I just managed to get TWRP running on the new Shield console, and installed SuperSU successfully. Two caveats: the display is upside down, and the USB host ports don't work. I had to plugin a mouse via an OTG cable in order to interact with it. ETA: That's only an issue when booted to TWRP. Everything's working fine in the stock ROM after rooting.
Procedure:
- enable developer tools / USB debugging
- adb push supersu.zip /sdcard
- adb reboot bootloader
- fastboot oem unlock
- fastboot boot twrp-2.8.6.0-shieldtv-unofficial.img
- unplug USB cable, connect mouse via USB, install SuperSU
TWRP boot image is attached. Off to explore...
EDIT: by request, some more detailed instructions:
On the Shield device, head to Settings -> About, and click "Build number" 7 times. This will enable Android's Developer options.
Go to Settings -> Developer options, and enable USB debugging.
Install the ADB/fastboot drivers and utilities if you don't already have them. When "adb devices" shows your Shield, you're good to go.
Download and extract recovery.zip from this thread.
Head to the SuperSU forum and download the latest version.
Open a command prompt and navigate to the directory where you downloaded everything. (Google this for your OS if you don't know how).
With the Shield still booted, run "adb push supersu.zip /sdcard" (change supersu.zip to appropriate file name). This will upload the SuperSU update zip to your device, which you'll install from TWRP.
If that worked fine, run "adb reboot bootloader". Your device should shut down, and display the Fastboot screen after a few seconds.
FOLLOW THE NEXT THREE INSTRUCTIONS AT YOUR OWN RISK. This WILL wipe all your user data, back it up with ADB first if you want to preserve it. DISCLAIMER #2: I have no idea if there are any DRM keys or anything that get wiped when this is done (this was the case on my Xperia Z3 Compact). I will say that Grid streaming still works fine after doing this.
This step will unlock your bootloader to enable booting unsigned images.
Run "fastboot devices" and make sure your Shield is visible.
Run "fastboot oem unlock" and follow the prompts on the screen. Your bootloader is now unlocked.
Now, boot the TWRP image with: "fastboot boot twrp-2.8.6.0-shieldtv-unofficial.img" - Note: I used this instead of "fastboot flash" so I could keep the stock recovery around, to grab an image of it after rooting.
You should now see a TWRP recovery menu (upside down for now).
Connect a keyboard or mouse via OTG cable, and select "Install", navigate to your SuperSU zip, select it, and follow the prompts.
Click "reboot" and you should now be rooted.

does this have to be done with an otg cable
You can use the supplied micro USB cable to do the adb portion. You shouldn't ever need otg with this device since it also has 2 full sized USB ports.

Instructions got updated
Hi,
I have updated the instructions to ones that more closely aligned with my experience of doing this. The initial instructions were good for me - but some were in slightly the wrong order or not quite clear enough to be immediately intuitive. I've tried to fix that Hope it helps.
On the Shield device, head to Settings -> About, and click "Build number" 7 times. This will enable Android's Developer options.
Exit settings, then go back in to settings -> Developer options, and enable USB debugging.
Install the ADB/fastboot drivers and utilities on to your PC if you don't already have them. When "adb devices" shows your Shield, you're good to go.
Download the latest Super user zip file from the super user thread here.
Download and extract the recovery file from here. (it needs to be a .img not a .zip)
run "adb reboot bootloader". Your device should shut down, and display the Fastboot screen after a few seconds.
FOLLOW THE NEXT THREE INSTRUCTIONS AT YOUR OWN RISK. This WILL wipe all your user data, back it up with ADB first if you want to preserve it. DISCLAIMER #2: I have no idea if there are any DRM keys or anything that get wiped when this is done.
This step will unlock your bootloader to enable booting unsigned images.
Run "fastboot devices" and make sure your Shield is listed when you do so.
Run "fastboot oem unlock" and follow the prompts on the Shield's screen. You use the power button on the shield device itself to navigate the menu, and long press to select an option. Once you have confirmed, this can take along time to unlock (hour and a half for me on the Pro version). Your bootloader is now unlocked.
"Fastboot reboot" to reboot to AndroidTV.
run "adb push supersu.zip /sdcard/" (change supersu.zip to appropriate file name that you downloaded earlier). This will upload the SuperSU update zip to your device, which you'll install from TWRP.
Now, boot the TWRP image with: "fastboot boot RECOVERYFILENAME.img" - Note: I used this instead of "fastboot flash" so I could keep the stock recovery around, to grab an image of it after rooting. (change the name of the file in the instructions to the name of your recovery file that you downloaded).
After a short while you should now see a TWRP recovery menu.
Connect a keyboard or mouse via OTG cable, and select "Install", navigate to your SuperSU zip, select it, and follow the prompts.
Click "reboot" and you should now be rooted.

We have a factory supported way to unlock and root. No real point in trying to exploit the system. If you are rooted, you should have a custom recovery anyway, which means you need to unlock the bootloader anyway in case you need to fix something.

Can I still root it this way if I already updated to 1.4 as I'm still fully stock and took the OTA

I struggled to get root with this write up, and I am not a rookie. There were a few key steps missing, for example, you actually have to flash twrp, you can't just boot from twrp as suggested, if you are on 1.4 and up. Also, you have to let the unit reboot after you do the OEM unlock before flashing twrp. I didn't and mine just froze after flashing the recovery img. I found this write up http://nvidiashieldzone.com/index.php/shield-android-tv/root-shield-android-tv/
That one in the shield zone forum was so much more complete. And yes, it worked just fine with the 2.1 update. I did it yesterday with no problems. It will wipe out your data, and it will take a long time after you do the fastboot oem unlock, especially if you have the PRO version. But root is working with no problems.

[TUTORIAL] Complete Guide on How to Flash English Rom to China Local Huawei Watch

You could have been frustrated with all the features that’s supposed to be in your New Huawei Watch is nowhere to be found. Like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Language Selection are all hidden in the China Stable Rom of the Huawei Watch.
I have talked to the CSR of Huawei in China, they honestly told me that the Wi-Fi certificate for the watch is not yet certified that’s why they cannot unleash it yet but it is embedded inside the watch should future updates allows the Wi-Fi to be used. Regarding the language selection, local China release is locked to Simplified Chinese, whether you like it or not.
If you happen to buy from China or received a gift with a China local release Huawei Watch, here is the guide on how to flash with an English Rom which I have already tested mine on.
Here is the complete guide:
Step 1: Put the Watch to Fastboot Mode
1) Hold down the power button
2) The screen will go black for about 2 seconds and then boot into the Huawei logo. Keep holding down the power button.
3) Wait for the first vibration, release the power button and then immediately give the power button one short press.
Note: If you feel the second vibration, you waited too long to do the release and press. Start over again with Step 1.
Another alternative for Step 1:
1.) Install ADB SETUP V1.3
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_1zjuazXSqbQ0p6NWtvRk9OMzA/edit
2.) Enable ADB and connect to computer
How to Enable ADB:
- Go to About
- Click 5 times on Build Number to access Developer Mode
- Go to Developer Options
- Enable ADB Debugging
3.) Go into command prompt mode
4.) Reboot watch into Fastboot mode using this code:
adb reboot-bootloader
Step 2: Unlock the Bootloader
1.) On command prompt mode, type this command: Fastboot Oem Unlock
2.) accept the prompt on the watch.
Note: If successful, command prompt will say your bootloader is already unlocked.
Step 3: Flashing
Download first the three files before proceeding:
Boot Img: https://mega.nz/#!rgRQHRrb!lgQCvqH-qkuqitPRRXfCad29MdmJ6ynaUHJDr0hjeLM
Recovery Img: https://mega.nz/#!ahgjxA4R!y8Hb0CBVBRwUr0tA3HeFrrqh0ALAiMyqJu0pLsBsAD8
System Img: https://mega.nz/#!2pYVBDpA!wQJT8LDcffk7uxEmrsqna6MKWIODD-FqBO_k4Poml7g
After downloading the three files, lets proceed:
1.) While on Fastboot mode, type this on the command prompt one at a time:
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot flash system system.img
2.) and then go to recovery and do a wipe data / factory reset.
Congrats! Your done!
Further Reading if you are stuck on flashing System.img
There are some reason beyond my explanation why the system.img cannot be flashed to the watch, here is the workaround:
1.) First of all download the TWRP and fastboot boot it:
TWRP download: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3505656&d=1444766757
Code:
fastboot boot TWRP2.8.7.0-Sturgeon.img
2.) Now your watch is in TWRP and you can no longer use ADB commands, go to your watch and select Advanced, then select ADB Side Load
3.) Going back to command prompt, push the system.img in the sdcard so:
Code:
adb push system.img /sdcard/
4.) Now flash it:
Code:
adb shell dd if=/sdcard/system.img of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/system
5.) Reboot.
Now you may encounter bootloop after flashing which I did, go back to Step 1 Fastboot mode and select Reboot Recovery, then wipe data and then clear cache, then you are good to go!
This is the most complete guide I can come up with based on my own explorations. Hope this helps.

Hi, first of all thanks for this awesome guide.
This is the first thing I am looking for after bought a Chinese watch from China.
Manage to go through ONLY I tried key in "fastboot oem unlock' all in small letters.
Then follow the guide instruction to goto recovery to wipe data after successfully go through the other flashing steps smoothly.
This is where I got stuck in infinite looping in Android lying and screen flashing every few seconds. I got panicked after trying multiple times failed to recover from this symptoms for a while.
Until finally manage to pull back to fastboot menu by keep press holding onto the power button. The steps of holding till first vibration then do a quick short press doesnt work.
I am glad that now I am back to normal with the English screen.
Next I will proceed to flash the TWRP and 1.4 update.
Hopefully everything goes smoothly.
Thank you for the guide once again and wish everyone success in updating and Enjoy!
Update: (9:29am)
Did a system update. Before was something like LBC49A, after system update it becomes LBC43B. I suppose this is 1.4 update as the name is the same.
Hence decided not to flash the TWRP recovery for the time being if it can continue auto system update.
Update (9/3/2016):
Sorry, nvr read through all the posts. Was thinking that (LBC43B) was the latest update.
So proceed to flash TWRP recovery then try to update to MEC23L (latest update) but failed to run "adb sideload update.zip"
Every time once enter into Recovery mode, the connection dropped. Then tried to do OTA update by factory reset as suggested but failed (confirmed my location can OTA as one use from same location didi it.)
This morning went back to PC flash back the original Stock Recovery from here.
Restart the watch and goto System Update, receive message "Charge the watch to update to MEC23L"
My thot - OTA only allow with Stock Recovery?
Update done but still cannot sms. ??
Btw, for LBC43B, many functions cannot work properly like sms, call and no sound at all. Thx n Enjoy.
P.S. Using Minimal ADB and Fastboot, PDAnet driver(for watch USB driver), running on Win7, connect via watch USB charge docking station.
help me please

This is my problem, I can´t install it-

adb shell dd if=/sdcard/system.img of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/system
5.) Reboot.
Now you may encounter bootloop after flashing which I did, go back to Step 1 Fastboot mode and select Reboot Recovery, then wipe data and then clear cache, then you are good to go!
This is the most complete guide I can come up with based on my own explorations. Hope this helps.

Hi, I have a problem, when I do this :
"select Advanced, then select ADB Side Load" after 4 or 5 minutes processing it saids "failed"
and then I can do this step "adb push system.img /sdcard/"
but not this "adb shell dd if=/sdcard/system.img of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/system"
Any idea please, thank you.

Hi there
All i know is you can flash the stock rom then update via OTA
mine is running marshmallow already now MEC23L
This is the safer way coz i never tried to flash in the MEC23L
Cheers!

hi there
i think you need to do a further reading on the one after step three
there are chances that you will get stuck in flashing the system image file
there is a workaround.
try it again
hope it helps.

Hello,
I'm also encountering this error. I did try the first method, and I'm getting stuck on activating ADB Side Load. Any tips?
Hi, there's a problem and i can't mount partition /data and /cache
plz help
Thanks a lot man you are a gem
I in hurry formatted system from twrp and was without OS. very detailed tutorial for beginners with adb. I am back with watch booting fine now
Just a note. I tried doing this while in China without vpn access for my phone. This made it so I couldn't sync up or pair because it kept trying to access google which was blocked. Once I got back to Canada I was able to do everything and update to newest OTA. If you leave it on chinese rom you can use in china and pair with the Android Wear China version app.

Not sure if he got back to you. I had the same problem, and it involved the system.img that I downloaded from the link above. It wasn't complete for some reason. On this thread attached, it has a zip that has it all. My watch works fine now. I want to thank the OP here for showing me the steps to take. You all ROCK!

How can you use the button when it ask for unlock confirmation? Doesn't it reboot instead to unlocking?

XT1676 - Stuck in Unlocked Bootloader, after Wipe Cache(?!)

Some informations at first:
XT1676 Moto G5, Fine Gold, 16GB
(TYPE M2675/ FCC ID: <known>/ SEQ#: <known>)
2017-10-30
Problem: Stuck in unlocked Bootloader
Hi all,
i am stuck on bootloader and cant get out.
On my PC I have "Minimal ADB and Fastboot"(v. 1.4.2.) installed and after i open a command prompt(admin) and type
- "fastboot devices" my phone is listed as <NR> fastboot
so that works as the only positive thing i can say
- "adb reboot", *daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037*
*daemon started successfully*
error: no devices/ emulators found
- "adb reconnect", error: no devices/ emulators found
i am not into the adb commands at all, i am a dummy and i would be so glad if someone could lead me out of my problem.
Maybe a word how i got into there:
1) i installed the minimal adb and fastboot(v1.4.2.)
2) i unlocked the bootloader by doing that over the Motorola UNLOCK Bootloader site
3) then i rooted & Flash Twrp Recovery (twrp-3.1.1-0-cedric)
with "fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.1.1-0-cedric.img"
4) first time entered into twrp recovery and i did the following:
A) a factory wipe-> reboot back to recovery mode->
B) install no-verity-opt-encrypt-5.1-> reboot and let system start before i turn off phone and enter bootloader(vol down+start) again
C) after entering recovery mode again, i install Magisk-v11.6 -> reboot->
D) now everything seemed to work, the system started properly rooted.
E) but then i decided to flash once again the Magisk-v11.6 followed by wipe data/ factory reset cause i wanted to completly do the flashing all over.
(dont ask me why i did it.. i could explain and tell you my intention but well it happened anyway and brought me to where i am stuck now)
but that was on this move not all yet: i also wipe dalvik cache
so after wipedalvik/ cache , since that moment i couldnt access to my SD Card anymore as it simply didnt show up anymore.
after a restart i was my first time in an endless bootloop of that Screen with "Erasing"(, the letters sourrounded by a spectral colored circle)
i had to disconnect the phone from power . also i tried to remove the battery for a day. but it would only get me back into that bootloop and only get me out by removing the battery...
i dont know anymore what happened then when the phone now got stuck in the bootloader instead of the bootloop. But yea, now i am stuck here, appreciating any help :highfive:

oh my, i just helped myself by reading my first poste here on the forum from 2016.
i made it now to start twrp by downloading the twrp_cedric_3.1.1-0 once again putting the recovery in my adb folder and type
<fastboot flash recovery twrp.img>
followed by <fastboot reboot-bootloader>
i am curious if i can get going now and if my SD card will be read and if i can get a new flash going...
now back in twrp i go first again to wipe/ factory reset.
now going to reboot, and reboot back into recovery. only gets me back to bootloader from where i can enter twrp manually now(but there is already an indication of the problem i have?)
also before the reboot, it doesnt ask me to install the twrp app anymore where i usually choose "do not install".
now i go to install the <no-verity-opt-encrypt-5.1>, flashing it successfully as it says at the end of the process but there is also some error message in the log before the ...done:
Failed to mount '/data' (invalid argument)
now i thought i should be able to boot the system again but i only get back into the bootloader...
can someone help me how to proceed correctly?
did i miss something to flash?

For failed mount data goto wipe & select format data (option on the right)
Reboot to recovery
For always going into recovery either you don't have a rom installed or read the faq section on my twrp thread as the answer is there
First of all thanks TheFixItMan, that you are behind it and your thread looks really cool and i will immediatly read and try to understand it!
For now i am stuck in the following:

the process shows successfully and "...done" but in the log there is a line of red letter:
<Red Letter>"Failed to unmount '/data' ( Device or resource busy)"
<White Letter> You may need to reboot recovery to be able to use / data again.
i went back and to reboot and recovery.
but recovery wouldnt be booted but i get back to the bootloader(maybe that is still an indication of the problem i have here?)
manually entered recovery i did the select format data again but <red letter> line remains.

You have to select recovery from the bootloader menu to enter recovery
You can also type in a terminal window whilst phone connected to pc in fastboot
fastboot erase userdata
This will erase all internal data (the same as format data in twrp)
Important Notes For Stock Rom Users
When you first start TWRP it will ask you to swipe to allow modifications - If you do this your stock rom will no longer boot unless you disable dm-verity.
This can be done either by flashing a disable dm-verity zip or by flashing SuperSu zip which will disable it for you

ok, stock rom didnt boot so i flashed the "no-verity-opt-encrypt-5.1" .zip
and voila, i could boot the stock again finally! yipie!
but three things i noticed:
1) the boot progress is suspicous / wrong/ stuck at a moment:
"hello" and "moto" i still see and before the letters of moto start spinning around, the screen freezes for like 2-3 seconds and the next ting i see is the red mouth and cameleon and so on
2) i tried to test camera real quick and it says camera is busy
camera unable to start. if this repeats please power off your phone and restart.
(i did already 5 restarts now and still same problem)
anyway, i wanted to install a ROM now, something like Cyanogenmod.
in this context i wonder what the Magisk-v11.6 does? Does it just give superuser permission and is it always required?
3) system only gives me option to Power Off System(no reboot possible)
and that power off and turn on always gets me first into bootloader tho i dont press vol down+start
Edit:
ok, i have here 3 issues still but it goes offtopic already. i throw a thanks first of all at TheFixItMan and then i think thread cna be closed.
I will soon try to install a ROM, like LineageOS 15.1 , and hope that my previous 3 issues will be solved in the process. . .

Cyanogenmod is now lineageos
Use the latest version of magisk to root (see official magisk thread on xda)
You can run modules to mod phone without tripping integrity or dm-verity which if false will stop apps that check if you are rooted from working
Magisk hide can hide apps from detecting you are rooted on a per app selected basis

Phone should power off normally
If it can't be started normally without going in bootloader and selecting normal startup see my faqs in twrp thread & follow guide to wiping the misc partition
Note if flashing lineageos 15.1 you will require the 64bit version of TWRP available on the lineageos thread - I did not compile this & don't support it
It also doesn't support encryption as far as I know so if you are encrypted you will need to format data & remove it else the rom will get stuck at the decryption screen

that was not exactly the problem. my problem is that either i press restart system from system or from recovery, i first get a stop at the bootloader. from there i can just toggle to START and confirm. then my system boots. its just that i first need to confirm in bootloader the Start, always!
at this point i tried now anyways from your Official TWRP For Moto G5 Cedric- Thread |||||| your solution from your faq. But yea, it obviously doesnt fit my problem cause putting the lines in cmd prompt gave me that result and boot still does a stop at bootloader.. before i can start system or recovery..
So yea, after the first codeline didnt trigger for an unknown reason for me...
i hadnt the courage to even try the second more relevant codeline!

That error means your phone is not connected to your pc
Make sure you have enabled adb debugging in phones dev settings before booting into recovery
If you type
adb devices
It will list all devices attached
Once your device is listed the commands will work

and you think that your commands fromyour solution here helps me with my issue that i can start straight to everywhere i want? Cause atm I just always have to go over the bootloader -"stop". From there i have then to manually "START" in order to start system (now: LineageOS 15.1:victory or where i have to manually toggle down to "RECOVERY MODE" and start TWRP.
Well, i would give it a try, but yea dunno what i am doing wrong here atm. i just realized that the command "adb devices" never worked for me yet, cause i got in conflict with the command fastboot adb devices which effectivly works for me. Cause before i installed lineageOS 15.1 i had to flash the twrp cedric 3.2.1-0 x64. i did that over the adb command prompt:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
and in that process i even let my phone restart to bootloader with
Code:
fastboot reboot bootloader
.
now i went to tab build nummer 7 times-> dev options "on" -> android debugging enabled.
when i go to bootloader now or to recovery, and connect my device, for a strange reason in command prompt "adb devices" shows that:
... i dont know why the cmd "adb devices" doesnt show my device. maybe there is a twrp setting i need to change?

Windows 7 or 10 - search for cmd then right click on cmd and select run as administrator then navigate using cd commands to adb location or copy & paste location (if any spaces in path then put the entire path in quotation marks)

i use win7 and cd'ing to the path was almost getting annoying
as screenshot shows, it still doesnt work
in my desperation i deinstalled now all adb drivers(minimal+ sdk)
ran a ccleaner and cleaned registry and reinstalled minimal adb again (btw, there was a new version by now out, 1.4.3)
so the episodes still goes on and i could figure out some new details
because i bought the same phone again for a relative who needed a phone..
in the process of setting it up correctly( thankfully xda is around ) i enabled dev options and the adb debugging
here is the result for the new phone
that shows now that executing as admin or standard user wasnt the problem. i just did it as standard user..
then i thought "hey cool, wait, i connect now my own G5 and see if i can get the phones' Nr displayed there and make sure my phone can communicate with my pc over adb( dunno if the sentence just made sense- greetz from a dummy)"
what happened is shown in this screenshot .. same picture as before! :crying:
(dont get irritated by the screeny because i used the same command prompt for
first, the new phone and
second, my "old" phone which doesnt boot properly, if you look at the command and the result
i am lost!
is it possible to reinstall a bootloader? or how come my phone doesnt communicate with the pc anymore?
and how come that effects the booting process so that i always get this "stop" at the bootloader although i pressed for a restart?
can i do any more tests that indicates what problem i have here?

[Guide] Unlock/Root/Update/Relock for BQ Aquaris X2 pro (zangyapro)

Introduction
I'm writing this thread to summarize useful information about the BQ Aquaris X2 pro such as:
preliminary actions (adb and fastboot configuration)
unlocking the bootloader
flash a factory image
root the device (currently without TWRP)
updating the device without losing root
relocking the bootloader
I own this phone since July 2018. I started writing my notes in August 2018 in the form of a Google document (link here). I shared this document with some telegram groups and some people I know.
Now I that I think it can be more useful to summarize all my notes here on XDA so that all interested people can access it.
DISCLAIMER:
By attempting any of the processes listed in this thread you accept full responsibility for your actions. I have no responsibility about your actions.
1) Preliminary actions
1.1) Developer options, USB debugging and Unlock OEM
The first thing you need to do is to enable Developer options, USB debugging and Unlock OEM. Hence:
enable “Developer options” by hitting 7 times on the build number (Got to settings --> about phone)
enter the new menu “Developer options” and,
enable “USB debugging”
enable “Unlock OEM”
1.2) Download and configure abd and fastboot
All steps listed in this guide will require the use of Google Platform tools. I suggest the use of the one provided by Google here: https://developer.android.com/studio/releases/platform-tools.
Download the one for your operating system:
View attachment 4655394
Be sure that your terminal can access adb and fastboot from every position by configuring the PATH. I'm use to configure the PATH on the fly when I need it. As I said before, I work on Linux/macOS where you can set the PATH by:
opening a terminal and running:
Code:
export PATH=$PATH:path_to_platform_tools
2) Unlock the bootloader
Unlocking the booloader will wipe your phone. So backup your data first.
The good news here is that this phone can be handled like a Nexus/Pixel phone. Therefore, the procedure to unlock the bootloader is straightforward:
do all stuff at point 1.1 and 1.2
open a terminal
plug your phone to the PC
reboot into the bootloader
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
run the code:
Code:
fastboot flashing unlock
now you have to wait until your phone reboots. It takes a while, don't panic!!! When the phone is on the initial screen turn it off and reboot into the bottloader again by holing 'power + volume down'.
run the code:
Code:
fastboot flashing unlock_critical
it's done. Your bootloader is completely unlocked. Now, you only have to wait again for the reboot.
3) Flash a factory image
As you probably know, BQ releases a factory image at each update at this link factory images. Factory images are very useful to perform a very clean install. Are you experiencing some issues with your phone and none of the trick you tried solved it? If it is a software issue a clean flash with a factory image will likely remove the issue.
Keep in mind that by flashing a factory image you will wipe also the userdata partition. So backup your data first. Now let's see how to flash the factory image:
you need an unlocked bootloader (see previous sections)
download the factory image from this link
unzip the archive
open a terminal at this folder
be sure to have abd and fastboot properly configured (see previous sections)
run the script to flash all (*):
Code:
./sdm660_fastboot_all_images.sh
wait the end of the process. The phone will reboot.
(*) on Windows you have to deal with the file sdm660_fastboot_all_images.bat. I suppose it's similar but I've never done it on Windows.
4) Obtain ROOT privileges
Nowadays, the most common tool to obtain root privileges is Magisk. Many people here know very well what Magisk is and how to install it with TWRP. However, TWRP is not yet ready for BQ Aquaris X2 pro, hence, we must follow the procedure for installing it without the custom recovery.
When I wrote the document in August I find very informative this guide by @nathanchance. It's for the pixel 2XL but, as I told you before, it works perfectly also for the BQ Aquaris X2 pro (zangyapro). So here I summarize what @nathanchance already posted. All credits must go to him.
Here you have the steps:
Download the Magisk zip from the official thread and install the manager from the zip.
Grab a boot image to patch (either the one from the latest factory image or a custom kernel one) and push it to your device:
Code:
adb push <path_to_file> /sdcard/Download
Open Magisk Manager and click the Install button.
Click "Install" at the first prompt then choose "Patch Boot Image File". A file manager will pop up.
Select the boot image you want to patch and let Magisk Manager patch it.
Pull it off your device:
Code:
adb pull /sdcard/MagiskManager/patched_boot.img
Reboot into the bootloader:
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
Flash the boot image and reboot.
Code:
fastboot flash boot patched_boot.img
fastboot reboot
Open Magisk Manager and you should be rooted!
Please note that it exists also a specific thread where the author also provides the patched boot.img files for download. Hence, you can start from point 6 without patching the boot.img by yourself. Take care of selecting the right one. Here you have the thread link.
5) Update the ROM without loosing root
To the best of my knowledge, the only way to update keeping root is by using the factory images provided by BQ.
Download the factory image of the latest firmware (link)
Extract the file zip and upload the file boot.img on your phone
Code:
adb push <path_to_file> /sdcard/Download
Open Magisk Manager and click the Install button.
Click "Install" at the first prompt and then choose "Patch Boot Image File". A file manager will pop up.
Select the boot image you want to patch and let Magisk Manager patch it.
Pull it off your device:
Code:
adb pull /sdcard/MagiskManager/patched_boot.img
Place the file patched_boot.img in the folder of the BQ firmware unzipped at point 2
Make a copy of the file sdm660_fastboot_all_images (.sh in Mac/Liux and .bat on Windows).
Rename the file, I called it sdm660_fastboot_upgrade.sh
Change the following lines (this will preserve root privileges on your phone):
Code:
fastboot flash boot_a boot.img # <-- delete this line
fastboot flash boot_a patched_boot.img # <-- add this line
Delete the following line (this will prevent your data to be wiped):
Code:
fastboot flash userdata userdata.img # <-- delete this line
Run from your terminal
Code:
./sdm660_fastboot_upgrade.sh (or bat)
I think that one can also update using the OTA. This will make you lose the root privileges and therefore, you will have to repeat the procedure at section 4. I've never tested this so, if you decide to do it, you are on your own.
6) Relock the Bootloader
By relocking the bootloader you will lose all your data, hence, backup them first.
To relock the bootloader you only need the following commands:
Code:
fastboot flashing lock_critical
fastboot flashing lock
Each command will wipe your data and will reboot the phone. Be patient waiting for the reboot and do not panic.
Reserved.
(work in progress)
First: Thanks for this really nice and comprehensive thread!
I have an important addition to point:
3. Open Magisk Manager and click the Install button.
Click to collapse
Install Button will only appear if the phone has internet connection (Wifi or Mobile Data)
with this I can patch the boot image successfully
But unfortunately I can not run the "sdm660_fastboot_upgrade.sh.bat" it does not recognize my device.
When checking the commands in the batch I found that my device is acting really strange, sometimes giving different errors for the same command like:
Code:
C:\Android\X2proRoot\1.7.1_WithRoot>fastboot set_active _a
error: Device does not support slots.
C:\Android\X2proRoot\1.7.1_WithRoot>fastboot set_active _a
Setting current slot to 'a'...
FAILED (remote: Invalid Slot)
finished. total time: 0.004s
C:\Android\X2proRoot\1.7.1_WithRoot>fastboot set_active _a
error: Device does not support slots.
also strange:
Code:
C:\Android\X2proRoot\1.7.1_WithRoot>fastboot flash boot patched_boot.img
target didn't report max-download-size
sending 'boot' (50749 KB)...
FAILED (remote: Requested download size is more than max allowed
)
finished. total time: 0.004s
Probably some windows crap not working or an incompatibility of the installed platform tools / drivers and the ones from BQ...

Thanks. I was not aware of this. And now I can't check this on my device because I started using GPay and I prefer to stay with no root and locked bootloader.
Maybe I will play again with the bootloader when TWRP for this device will be released. If it will
got it running!

Probably it was just that. I Installed Ubuntu 16.04 LTS in a Vmware machine and followed the tutorial (important note here: do everything in a Terminal running under root).
Short moments of panic due to boot-loop included (I flashed a defective boot image [vmware drag and drop files obviously did not copy the whole file] )
for everybody who ends in a bootloop: just keep calm, switch off phone (>10s press power button) an very quickly when it is of press power and volume down to get into flashmode again (I had to try several times)
Hey @raudidroid, when I answered to you the first time I did not read all the message or you edited it later. Only now I'm reading the issues you faced.
On Windows, what shell did you use? PowerShell?
I'm not sure about this because I banned Windows from my personal and working life several years ago, however, recently I read some posts of people having issues with PowerShell. If this is also your case next time try to use classic cmd.

Regarding this the above quote, I'm quite sure that you do not need to be super user to apply any of the procedure listed in the guide.

Since your are suggesting "... very quickly when it is of press power and volume down ... " I can imagine that you did this procedure while your phone was connected to the laptop/PC with the USB cable. In this condition, when you force the shutdown by pressing power for 10s, the phone reboots automatically. So my suggestion is to unplug it first, in this way the phone turn off without rebooting and you can comfortably enter in the bootloader with no hurry.

I was using CMD / Command Prompt on win10, but maybe I have to many ADBs/Drivers/... installed. got a really weird behavior...

without root it wouldn't work, i got "no permissions (user in plugdev group; are your udev rules wrong?)"
with root everything ran smoothly

Oh! Yep, that sounds like it would have been the better way to do it
Thanks for your post and your answers.
BTW: half-OT do you know any way to get netflix running after the rooting?
For your information.
I follow part 5 and updated my firmware to version 1.7.3 successfully. Thanks for this guide.

Thanks for sharing.
I'm on PIE as well. Today I flashed the factory image to make a clean install.
Hello, maybe someone can be of help to my situation.
I had my phone rooted in the last firmware version (1.7.3), and I was getting notifications to update to Android 9 pie for some time, however I was waiting to have some time to spare and first backup my files and do a factory update to pie and then root.
However, last nigh without warning my phone just rebooted and updated to pie, (firmware ver 2.0.2) and I lost root obviously. However, all my files, apps, etc were intact.
So today I decided to root my phone again. I download the firmware zip from BQ's site and then used Magisk (ver. 19.2) to patch the boot.img.
I rebooted to fastboot and did "sudo fastboot flash magisk_patched.img", and rebooted but the phone got stuck in the logo screen.
Then I used method 5 of this tutorial and ran ./sdm660_fastboot_upgrade.sh (with the mentioned modifications), however it bootlooped again. Then I flashed the original boot img and my phone booted just fine again, I tried to patch the img again, did again step 4 and it bootlooped again.
Any clues on how to successfully root ? Never had any problems updating and rooting from firmware 1.4.0 to 1.7.3.
Thank you for your time
