3d printed holder for standard watch straps, possible? - Sony Smartwatch 3

Looking at the design of the sw3,how tough would it be to 3d print a case for the sw3 with cut outs for standard pinned watch straps? I have 0 design chops but the band itself is just a single piece of silicon /plastic, so someone should like, totally get on that, man.

I was also thinking about this and would be very interested in anything anyone can come up with!

Nothing yet?

Hi guys! I have good news. I asked a friend of mine to make a holder for the watch. The question is that he needs a 3D model of the watch in order to work his magic. hehehe
So, anyone?

That's an excellent idea !

I could do with a watch model as well.....
Wanting to have a bike mount that the watch clips into. Have had a quick look for blueprints but found nothing yet. I wonder if Sony would have something they could give us....

So one of us just has to master cad and we're in business. Cool.

I could do it. I'm an engineer, and work in cad all day long. Problem is, i don't have a watch yet. Going to ask for one for Christmas. Crossing my fingers.

Man I hope Santa brings you one. I'd be willing to pay for an adapter!

What would be a smart workaround for the rubber/metal usb cover to easily snap it onto a holder..

Boom.

What a time to be alive!
Ever since the SW3 was revealed, I was hoping someone, somewhere would 3d print a holder for a more classy wrist band. Then, Sony finally unveiled their metal and other holder. Annnnnnnd... now I'm still hoping someone would make something a little ..."sexier" looking.

I have a 3d printer and some CAD chops and am planning on design a band and maybe a bike mount. I can make it available on shapeways once it's finished. If you all could share in more detail what features you are looking for, that would be helpful

I think you may not find what you want with a 3d printer since all the ones people use at home make plastic (and therefore plastic looking) parts and shapeways can't print metal with interlocking parts. I suppose with the right design, it could be printed in pieces and assembled afterward. Even then, though, I fear it won't look nearly as sleek as the metal band Sony is coming out with, unless printed in Platinum, but they charge $100 handling fee for that

That's great. One feature I wish the band had is to have a little "lip" or raised area around the screen bezel to protect the screen when I lay the watch face down. I'd also love something that's more lint resistant... as my black rubber watch band is a lint magnet . I like black, brown, tan colors. It'd be neat if some cool textures could be printed on the band... or even a design like a cat, guitar, drumset, etc... (I'm a musician and cat lover). If you do end up developing a custom band.. please share your results.

I want to paint my phone with gold and red. I see a lot of info on the net about painting your phone but I rather ask the xda crowd.
Will it affect phones signal?

dont worry lol. I changed my mind when i found a carbon fiber skin online.
If you have an airbrush you can do it, and make it look good.
I airbrushed a spare back cover for my Dinc, did it in a nice pearl metallic blue, was considering doing a pink camo one for my wife. An Airbrush, proper prepping, and patience will net you a nice result. You could also look in the ricer section of places like AutoZone and get carbon fiber wrap/decal/overlays and cut that out to your phone and cover it. Alot of options if you are crafty enough and take your time. I have been making phone docks for our work desks, nightstands/etc out of wood for our Dincs, and will be making a few prototypes for the X before it arrives some time next year You would think Motorola would produce the damn things.........
Do you have a blog or something it would be interesting to see what you've done

No I dont have a blog, I just like to tinker, but here is a pic or two of the prototypes I have done for our Dinc's. This weekend I will probably do a full redesign and make 2 for my X with magnets embedded for the home dock Multimedia Mode.
I have made like 15 of these, moved on to hardwood and going to stain the first one, better sanding, etc, the 2 I made for my Mom look fantastic, also experimenting with different fabric, I got a sq yard of nice leather, wondering how much I should use, only on the back? the sides? so yeah, just tinkering.

lol, I actually made a mini Adriaondak chair for my moms Moto Droid. I only did one. Was a major pain as I had to cut so many small pieces, then glueing it together was another pain. Never again on that one.
Those are just blah prototypes. I moved onto better wood and now that I have the Dx, I am going to work on one that fits the phone, and fits the curve of the back and puts it into Desk Clock/Multimedia Mode. My work schedule keeps me limited to weekends, and it has been 105+ and I dont have AC in my woodshop. Was hoping to have a few 5-10 made by now and all the bugs worked out for the Dx model. Wifes Dx is coming around the end of the month so I still have a little time.
Looks cool!
Nice job!

[MINI REVIEW] Cheap Waterproof case.

Well I ordered it from eBay and it arrived today so as promised here's a micro review.
First impressions are not bad, I can't complain considering the price I paid for it and, for something to use whilst out walking or just using in the bath (pretty light duty stuff) etc... It will do the job quite nicely. You can use the Tab with it in the case and it works really well considering I have a screen protector on it too.
It doesn't have a cut out in the back to use the camera but it's no big deal.
I have the book cover case for my Tab, but it will not fit in the water proof case if the Tab wearing it, so you have to remove this first.
I've uploaded a video to YouTube if you want to see it in action.
And here is a bit more closer detail about it.
1) First Zip Lock
2) Second Zip Lock
3) Velcro to protect the locks

All in all, It's not bad, granted it's not a WaterBuoy or an Aquapac case but you get what you pay for, so if you want something to keep the rain off it or just peice of mind when using it on the beach (just anywhere near water really LOL) then the "eBay Special" will do the job just fine.... First ever review complete
Original Post
I was going to purchase one of the waterproof cases for my Tab from either eBay or Amazon, but has anyone here already bought one that can comment on how water tight they actually are?
Would you trust it to keep your device safe if it fell into the bath for example and could you use the camera whilst it is in the case etc etc... I'm mainly wanting one so it'll stay nice and dry whilst using it for Ordinance Survey maps whilst on walks and also if i drop it in a stream for example.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated if someone has bought one that is.
If no one has however, then I'll get one anyway and review it on here, in case anyone else is also interested in getting one.

Well this is one them, however, I ordered mine from ebay.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/SAMSUNG-P7510-GALAXY-ALL-WEATHER-CELLAPOD/dp/B005EFSELI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1327162602&sr=8-1
There is another one eBay for £30 but I thought I might as well get the cheaper one first, as it maybe just fine for my needs, if not then I'll get the more expensive one.
Either way I'll let everyone know what its like when it arrives.
From your link:
"Boxed-product Weight: 64 Kg"
I really hope they made a mistake here . But even with forgetting the decimal and accidentally writing Kg instead of pound or something it would be quite heavy, as 6.4 pounds are almost 3 kilograms.
The product description does not provide much but I would be surprised if you will be able to use the Tab while in the case. It looks to me to be a waterproof cover that will protect the tab if it gets dropped in water but will require you to remove the tab to do anything.
There are excellent waterproof cases on the market for Apple products. I have one for my iPhone that offers full functionality while in the case and will protect the device even if it is submerged in 8 feet of water for over 24 hours, (I tested it). The manufacturer is LifeProof. They do not have a Tab version yet but are considering it. Otterbox is another manufacturer with a good product for iPhones and iPads.
The problem for manufacturers considering making products for the Android market is that Android tablets come in many sizes and shapes and are constantly being modified. By the time they produce the tooling to make a case for a particular device, that device is off the market. Apple is a much slower moving target so this is where the resources go.

DIY Flip-case

If you buy a rear cover cradle type case it's pretty easy (maybe) to glue some covering and include a flap.

How does the finish look like?
hand made cases is always good u just need time to finish it all . thats why people prefer buying one than making one
thanks look cool but the time invested seems a bit much for finding something similar for $4. On the otherhand i am always up for DIY projects and i always thought of doing something similar to this for a case but adding a LED circuit of some sort into it. That case would def not be found anywhere else.
Time investment isn't a consideration for people intelligent enough to have thrown away their TV sets. <snicker> <snicker> Some folk prefer to spend such time doing hobby stuff like leather carving, RC model building, glass blowing, pottery, sewing, computer graphics, writing, reading, and so on and so forth.
Adding LED or LCD to a case might be fun. I can't imagine what I would hook them up to though. As indicator lights they would be redundant. Maybe as text scrollers they might be interesting. They sure would add a lot of bulk for sure! I can't really fathom any use for it. <shrug>
Such a thing like this doesn't have to be made from leather. I chose leather because I wanted to recap/learn about leather carving but gluing cuts from an old pair of Levis onto some hard plastic or cardboard for the front and onto a cheap-o back shell-case for the back could work. Furs too! I have a few faun skins (pelts) that I was thinking about using for my Galaxy Note. And also the covering doesn't need to incorporate a flip cover front part. Just the back would do. And in that case starting out with a white one and spray-painting or air-brushing could produce some interesting results! Using sculpey and sculpey-like products on a flat surface is easy and fun too!
Here's a progress update on mine. This is from about a week ago. The next step will be finishing the edges a bit and adding an inner surface which will be hard like a door and covered with padded microcloth.

NomNom, advice? As in "do not swallow!" or the likes? I dunno. Some phone manufacturer designs incorporate an antenna in the rear cover. So if the case you select replaces that cover, make sure it has the antenna connections.

they should offer a one-time design swap for any design as soon as these are released. you had 14 days to pick and re-pick your design... i think they should temporarily extend it.
Well, they added wood backs to the motomaker today:
https://www.motorola.com/us/motomaker?pid=FLEXR1#exterior/backplate
Unfortunately, it's only currently available in bamboo, costs $100 more, and will delay your order 2weeks...
Disappointing. They don't look solid... more like a veneer over a plastic back, or possibly a thicker plank fused within a plastic surround. In any event I seem to have lost interest here (especially considering the C note extra).

without having seen them in person, you can pretty much bet on this being the case. there's no way that they would have been able to engineer the wood such that it would be strong enough to grip on to the phone without a ton of glue. having said that, the amount of veneer used in the process probably only increased production by pennies.
i still think they look amazing and i still think there will be issues down the line (peeling, cracking, etc). at least moto is doing something unique here. with all of the functionality this phone offers, in addition to the overall design, this is my new favorite phone. here's hoping moto sticks with the design/process/etc and only updates the internals.

Every report I've read states that the backs will indeed be solid wood, so no veneer or anything that should peel. What I think they did was have the solid wood back fit into a plastic frame, which has the clips that attach it to the body of the phone. In this picture, I think the white border is the plastic frame.

unfortunately until we see them in person, and someone does a tear-down, we won't know the truth. i hope they're solid wood, but how thick could they possibly be? the picture shows the dimple present, which means the wood will need to have a similar thickness (or be thickened in the general area). the idea of it being a solid piece leaves me curious as to how they managed to get the speaker grill identical to the detail of the plastic cover. i can't imagine that wood fibers would allow for that amount of presicion.

[Q] Possible to convert black to the nice new steel version?

hello, i was just looking into the smartwatch 3 and i think the steel one looks great. the black one however, is right now almost half the price (net quite but not too far off) and i was thinking, could i get the black one then at a later date but the nice steel strap and holder for it?
i mean as much as i like how it looks in steel i dont think its worth all that much extra but im hesitant to get the black rubbery strap as in the past my skin hasnt always loved that kind of watch straps.
(also sorry if ive put this in the wrong place, wasnt sure if here or accessories)
Yeah the bands are interchangeable, not that Sony has bothered to make strap available to buy yet...........................
ah thats what i hoped. one now ordered. yey, thanks and fingers crossed sony decide to make it available at a sensible price for a strap.
same here waiting for accessories especially for the black steel band
Sony announced the availability of the new straps in spring !

well thats good news, yey. not like my watch has actually shown up. curse you amazon.
I'm a bit miffed that I had to buy the Smartwatch 3 twice. (I got the black rubber on launch thinking I could just buy the metal strap.) Just like the Smartwatch 2 it looks like you will never be able to. My metal Smartwatch 3 arrived this morning but its been a costly exercise being an early adopter. It works out ill have lost £80 once I've sold the black rubber one. Id have kept them both and used the black for running and the metal for best but you cant pair both at once which is a real shame.
Waiting for the official lime sports strap!
It still works out way cheaper than buying a Tag I suppose lol!!

I find it pretty robust, and if it breaks warranty or insurance. Also I think the convenience of being able to charge wit a conventional cable outweighs any potential port breakage issues
