return back tot s-on and locked bootloader - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Yesterday I bought this HTC One M8, but it feels like a downgrade next to my OPO. So I want to return it. Problem is that I unlocked the bootloader with HTCdev, made it s-off with firewater and rooted it. Is there an easy way to make everything stock again? Im on cm11 now but ive made a backup of the stock rom after I rooted it. So I can go back to that point. But how can I make my phone s-on and lock the bootloader?

EddyOS made a guide in the general section that you can follow "Return to 100% stock" or something similar to that. It's written for international unbranded versions but it'll be mostly the same for any device. Just download the correct nandroids(which you already have as mentioned) and recovery. You'll have to use the method in Scotty's thread(It's linked in that guide from EddyOS) to reset the "Tampered/Modified" text. Scotty also has a thread which will help with the locking of bootloader, to show it as "locked" and not "relocked". To go back S-ON you should use code in fastboot mode: fastboot oem writesecureflag 3 <<<Though it's generally not recommended to do this and return to S-ON as it might throw out a security flag on the device, could even brick it. Some people had success with it some not, I won't recommend it but it's your choice ultimately. Which is why I showed the command to do it but I take no responsibility for it either way.

Flash your stock backup before root and than fastboot flash stock recovery followed by relocking your bootloader. It's been said in other threads that some devices shipped S-off so I wouldn't worry to much about that (my opinion)

Alright so ill keep it s-off but I removed the tampered banner and locked the bootloader, but I still have SuperSU and root acces it seems. Is there a way to remove that?

TWRP uses your phones serial in patch, that's why you cannot see the backup when trying to restore.
Do the following...Boot to TWRP, Backup, choose something small like boot, swipe to backup.
Reboot to OS, open a file explorer and look for TWRP\BACKUPS\SH***\2014-11-16---\
Delete all files from here and put there the downloaded files.
Reboot to TWRP and try to restore now. You should be able to see your backup

And it doesn't help you to download the OTA.zip that is provided in post 3 of that thread, it's not a nandroid backup it's an OTA update and it will NOT take you back to stock. You need all the system files etc from a nandroid backup(1+ GB) vs OTA.zip(couple of MB's) huge difference. That you can find in the collection of stock backups thread made by MrHofs, it's also in the general section.

Going to ask all the regular Q's now, are plugged into the computer, charge only mode, is your SD card FAT32, when you type everything into the command window ( HIT ENTER )after each entry is everything working up to the point you get the error? Did you put the PB31IMG on the ROOT of your SD card?
Sorry but I have to ask, I'm not tryin to make you feel bad.

I think the issue is you having a locked bootloader....
The issue is his hboot version, it's 1.020000 and not ".920000" which means the phone is unlocked. I think someone posted about this recently in this or the General section. If I find a link I'll post it.
Edit: Here's the thread I was referring to. Unfortunately it doesn't look like they were successful.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459382
Edit to the edit: Here's another thread as well. Maybe try the CWM file that CMLUSCO posted? I'm just throwing out options.

Yes it appears to be. Best bet would be to use htc dev unlocker, and then hopefully be able to get true s-off from there. With it currently locked, nothing is going to work. As far as i know there is no way to downgrade that hboot, at least yet.
I guess this is the new hboot they are coming out with. Got to love it.

Did you do the rest of the steps on the htc dev site, where you use fastboot to copy a bunch of numbers from your phone and paste them to the htcdev site. Just doing the ruu will not unlock the bootloader, that is just the first step.
You may also want to check this out if it still says its locked oow, twords the bottom of the first post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1506258.
Okay so now the PB31IMG is going through it says
Bootloader: Bypassed
Radio_V2 - Ok
Boot - Ok
Recovery - Ok
System - Ok
Splash1 - OK
Could not roll back HBOOT
then continues and said Update complete
so can I get S-OFF now? I will try and post back later with the results
It flashed the img but I still have a locked HBOOT, continuing with the steps

[Q] Return To Stock Request (Yes I Have Searched)

I think one of the side effects of XDA 's popularity, is that it has become huge and makes searching for direct answers time consuming in some scenarios
Anyway I digress, here's what Im looking to do...
I have an unbranded DHD (no carrier branding) here in the UK and have a requirement to send it to HTC to have dust cleaned from beneath the screen...
what Im looking for is:
1) A link to the latest unbranded ruu to return me to stock rom
http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Ace
(not sure which one I need from this huge list, as there are no descriptions)
2) The phone is currently s-off and radio s-off and is running 4EXT Recovery Control for recovery, so this will need to be removed as well
I'm paranoid about making this kind of request, as I've seen so many threads shot down in flames, with replies along the lines of "use the search tool" and other unhelpful responses.
Paranoia aside, could someone help guide me through the exact steps / files I need to make this unbranded uk phone appear untouched when it gets to HTC
Use the ace hack kit return to stock option
Or you can run a RUU.exe
The list you posted is outdated.
Assuming you want a stock unbranded WWE (world wide english) RUU, the latest release is WWE_3.12.405.1_R_Radio_12.65.60.29_26.14.04.28_M_release_233505_signed

Yes true but according to my personal experience they didn't care being S-OFF.
It's only dust under the screen not hardware or software issue.

ok cool that make things clearer - so ive grabbed the suggested ruu, then its just a matter of making my phone s-on... presuming I can use the ace advanced hack kit for that?
AAHK should work to s-on.
Roms taking forever to download - will report back a little later with my progress... thanks for the info peeps - very useful!
ok restored using the RUU_Ace_Sense30_S_HTC_WWE_3.12.405.1_R_Radio_12.65.60.29_26.14.04.28_M_release_233505_signed
However browsing through the ace hack options there doesn't seem to be an option to just turn s-on back on again... any other tools available to flip s-on from s-off?
Did you find the password?
Run AAHK. In main menu select o (options) and then:
s -Return to S-ON and Flash Stock RUU (RUU not supplied)

But thats my problem - none of the downloadeable roms in the list are applicable to me - I just want to turn on s-on... so where now?

If I select to download one from the list, I get the option NOT to download the rom, which then takes me to this screen...
It seems as though this is limited to only the ruu's in the list, if you chose a different / manual ruu as I did, there is no option to skip the list and enable s-on
" The following RUUS will be downloaded as needed and archived
After downloading, you will be given the OPTION to flash
The download is skipped if the RUU is in the archive
Turning security on (S-ON) is OPTIONAL: you'll be prompted"
Flashing is optional. So I guess is not necessary. Download it but dont flash. Try this way
---------- Post added at 08:26 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:16 PM ----------
Ok dowload it and try not to flash when prompted.
If it doesn't work you need to start from the beginning downgrading, rooting etc etc and then s-on again downloading WWE EU RUU 2.50.405.2 (CID HTC__001)
ok - I think Im either stoopid or I am missing something here...
this is what I've done...
1) Run ace hack and then selected 'o' which takes me to the options menu
2) Selected 's' which takes me to the screen...
Now this is where Im confused... your telling me to select '0' - but there is no '0' (zero) option within this screen?
edit - just read your reply after I posted this one - will give that a try (dont flash the downloaded ruu)
edit2 - Think this is an oversight by the ace hack dev team - ie not giving you the option to just skip straight to s-on option
edit3 - no go, as you will see if you choose no to flashing the downloaded rom, it throws a wobbly
Use the 2.50.405 option. Its the unbranded version. The hack kit just hasn't been updated to the sense 3.0(3.12.405). The 2.50 is fine and if you really want you could update to the 3.12 afterwards
Grrr this is silly not having a utility to just s-on again without the faff

Sounds like an excellent idea!
Hmmm everything appeared to go ok and the command prompt finally returned to the options screen - however the phone is still displaying the white htc logo which looks like a reflection on a black background... should this screen be displaying for a long period of time?
try to flash the 2.50 but I believe it will give an error because you are already on a latter one (3.12.401.1)
---------- Post added at 08:59 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:52 PM ----------
Honestly I dont understand why you are doing all this...it is just dust under the screen as said few post ago.
Most probably they won't even look at the hardware as happened to me.
But ok, this is up to you, of course.
Last time I flashed an ruu it took about 15 min. You within that range?.
Since your soff, your can flash any ruu, regardless if you have a newer(3.12) on. Its the beauty of soff

brilliant, that should work then, definitely run it on PC not mac
its not exactly bricked, its just that you relocked the bootloader, so in simple terms the security warning is there because the phone is now locked, it checks the whole phone when it boots, and its recognizing something isn't stock, so goes into bootloader with a warning. Flashing RUU returns everything to stock so that should in wipe off whatever is causing the security warning.
Post back how it goes and good luck !

[SOLVED]NEED Urgent HELP

Hi guys, I am facing many problems with my HTC one M8. To start with I own an old Sony xperia and an htc one m7,installing roms was very easy, all you had to do was unlock the bootloader and download any rom you want then flash it , I thought it was the same thing but it turned out to be different, I wanted to install Android revolution v21 so what I did was download the rom (I have unlocked bootloader) then I used TWRP to flash it it showed me that it finished then I was stuck into bootloop, after that I thought that a factory reset(wipe) would fix the problem so I entered the recovery and tried a full wipe but I faced a new problem that everytime I try to enter the recovery it reboots after 20 seconds or so, I tried to install different versions of TWRP (including 2.7 and 2.8) and I also tried clockworkmod but it didn't work. So I did a little bit of research and I find out that I need to match CID and something called firmware version and then I found some threads about returning i back to stock such as:

As far as I know, he had cyanogenmod and twrp installed and was trying to return his phone to stock (not sure why) and installed the wrong RUU.
How can I repair his phone?
I'm researching as best as I can, but everything I'm finding requires S-OFF and I doubt he has the BIN file....
Thanks in advance.

You shouldn't need S-OFF if you are using the correct RUU... so that could be the first thing you could try.
Another would be to unlock the phone through fastboot, then re-flash custom recovery... through custom recovery flash a nandroid of stock HTC Sense. Then through fastboot again flash stock recovery. Then wait for all the OTA updates to arrive.
Once you have installed all OTA updates you have two choices....relock the device, or use it stock while keeping the bootloader unlocked for future flashing goodness.

UPDATE - I got S-OFF back on the phone and booted into recovery. From there, I decided to simply reboot the system, but now I'm stuck at the Cyanogenmod splashscreen. So back to TWRP....
I don't really understand what RUU's are. The last HTC I had was Desire-Z....

Well...from what the image you pasted in the OP showed you had no system to reboot into. So that was definitely a wrong move.
Notice the OS - "empty space".....well that is not a good sign.
If you can access TWRP the download a nandroid of stock, and follow the advice I already gave above.
Flash stock nandroid 4.25/4.20, from TWRP, then from fastboot flash stock recovery.
Reboot and wait for OTA updates.
All is well, got the running properly now - thanks everyone!

Incorrect. OS being empty was caused by a bug in some earlier versions of TWRP. Nothing to be too concerned about at all.

Uhm....never knew it was an actual bug, i run across it once when i corrupted my system quite a few months.
Do u know the process to recreate the bug... Trying to see if it was the same bug which i experienced, or a variation thereof.

Corrupting system won't affect the OS number on the bootloader screen. "OS" is a bit misleading, it actually indicates the firmware number, not the ROM version.
The bug is easily reproduced by flashing certain TWRP versions (not sure exactly which ones). Its very common. We see this pop up by folks almost on a daily basis (OS number blank) especially folks using older TWRP versions.

Additionally, its not clear whether your suggestion is what actually worked for him (and exactly what nandroid build, etc.). OP should post the solution that worked, 1) for benefit of "helpers" like you, to confirm your fix is what worked; and 2) for the benefit of others that may run into the same issue.

The phone would not boot since the bootloader was relocked. This is what happens when you relock by definition, as relocking expects RUU to be run.

RUU existing for the Desire Z (I had the same phone); and in fact for as long as HTC has been making Android devices.
RUU = ROM Update Utility
Its usually a Windows executable (although the zip format can be extracted to work with fastboot flash, or put right on an SD card) that will completely re-image the phone to stock firmware and software. You need to run the RUU that matches the phones carrier version (CID) and model (MID), and not all versions have RUU. Otherwise, the RUU will fail and not install anything.
RUU also requires a locked or relocked bootloader (although this requirement is bypassed with s-off).
RUU will also wipe any user data on the phone (including internal storage "media").
