[Q] Brighter dimmed watchface? - Sony Smartwatch 3

Hi guys,
During the daytime I want the "dimmed" watchface to be a bit brighter. Is there anyway to achieve this? Do you know of a watchface with a brighter dimmed screen?
Thanks!

in "dimmed" mode there is no backlight so u cant't adjust the "brightness".

Like billdanos says, the screen technology is called transflective LCD and it's pretty cool but you can't increase the brightness.

One major help is to make sure to use bold watchfaces so it reflects better

Any good examples?

Actually, I decided to do one by myself. Used WatchMaker, took me few minutes. It is very nicely visible on SW3 with no backlight ("dimmed mode").

Thanks.

Hard to tell. My approach is to charge SWR50 every 2nd night, and basically nothing changed here. Yet, I was not observing power consumption closely.

I don't use watchmaker but another watch face app: Facer for Android Wear. 2 days-usage is very easy to achieve in my case: always screen-on (reflective screen) + normal usage + power-off in the night (I don't like wear anything when I sleep so I turn it off and left it during the whole night)
Almost 1.8% per hour battery consume is totally fine for me.

Which face from "Watchmaker" seems to be the brightest? I just downloaded it.

Where is the Moto 360 v2 section ?

Hello,
Is it just me or I can't see a forum section dedicated to Moto 360 v2 ? Many users have already received the smartwatch. I would like to ask actual users about battery life, etc. and I just don't know where to ask...
I've been wondering that too. I should be receiving my watch tomorrow, so I'll try to let you know about the battery life. I'm hoping that the 46mm watch will go at least a whole day with ambient mode on.
I have the 42 mm and I wear it from 7 am to 10 pm with ambient mode on and by the end of the day the battery is down to 33%. I don't do much with it except use Moto Body to track steps and heart rate but not during exercise, I have a Microsoft Band that works a lot better for me for that. I have it paired to an iPhone 6 too and have some reconnect issues that appear to be common with iPhone users.

Thanks for the info. Are you using "ambient mode on and wrist gestures off" (which would keep the screen on all the time) or the "ambient mode on and wrist gestures on (which would not keep the screen on all the time) ?

I have ambient on and wrist gesture on as I found that ambient mode isn't bright enough to see outside in sunlight.

I'm on day 1 with the Moto 360 2nd Gen 46mm. Unplugged at 8:00AM and its now 10:36PM I'm sitting at 60% battery remaining after some pretty heavy use throughout the day. Ambient mode is off but everything else is on. Watch battery estimates I have 22 hrs left based on today usage.
I'm actually a little disappointed with battery life on the 42mm. I'm hoping that today was a fluke, but I can't think of anything that I did out of the ordinary and I didn't really play with it. This is my first full day with it so it's very possibly a fluke.
I took it off the charger around 7:30am and by 3pm I was at 20%. It still lasted until i got home around 6 where it almost died. This is with ambient and gestures turned on. If it won't last through the day with those features on, I'm going to trade up to the 46mm. My nexus 5 was almost dead as well which might mean there was a runaway app. I'm hoping so at least.

Burn-in: does anyone have it yet? How paranoid should we be?

Has anyone noticed any burn-in problems yet? I've seen reports of the problem for some other watches (LG), but so far nothing specific here for the Huawei.
It's so far so good for me, but I've been extremely nervous about this issue. I avoid faces with things like thick tic marks or logos in ambient mode. I know about Wear's built-in "protection," but I don't have a lot of confidence in it. Am I being unreasonable?

I had the GWR and didn't have any issues with that at all. That said I turn the screen off at night during charging so maybe that helps. I'll keep an eye on the Huawei, but I'm hopeful that it will be fine.

I had the GWR for almost a year too. Always used watchfaces that are 'always on' (so no dimmed mode without background) and always had the charging animation on by night. Never experienced any burn-in.
I just powered mine on for the first time last night. I played with it for a few hours, then put it in the charger for the night and this morning it has burn-in!! How could it happen so fast??

That deserves an RMA and you deserve a new replacement watch.
I sometimes get lag on mine, im not sure if it's actual lag or whether im doing something wrong but as someone mentioned if the watch went full brightness and is charging then the heat might have done it?
I returned it yesterday to best buy. Lucky me though. . they had cyber Monday deals and it was on sale for $50 less! !
I noticed that when the minute hands on mine move (ie every minute) that the whole screen kind of does a refresh. I'm using a custom watch face called InstaWeather, and in the settings there's an option to help with screen burn. I wonder if this is it? So every minute, every pixel would have been off/on or on/off?

yes, this is an android wear burn in protection buy moving a few pixels in all directions, works very good if you don't have large objects in the ambient mode, and won't help much if you have.

In my opinion, yes, you are being overly worried. First the technologies itself has improved and we see less burn-in even when we set screens on to test such a thing. Second, the ability to move(write) a watch face or screen is not some huge leap, in fact it's really super easy to add to an OS to simply move the screen pin outs when in any long display mode. Beyond all that, app makers, watch face builders, now have the old data and make sure they write to avoid any long same display visual mode.
Easy to add to an app, when write same display, write 2 pixels, change.
Then after all that we have face on mode and ambient mode, which in my daily use changes my watch face enough that I would never get burn in. Agree that I am a heavy user of the watch, I tend to have to change twice a day. Perhaps someone that used the watch much less would have more of a concern?

Wrong. You must not understand what screen burn in is. No new technology has come out that will stop screen burn in. The software that moves the pixels over only works if the object is 1 pixel wide other wise it doesn't work screen burn in will still happen. And they do not have it where the same pixels won't be used otherwise in ambient mode it would jump around not wiggle.

Fare enough, just my opinion, & you have yours. Too bad you had to start by saying wrong.
Samsung has made changes to light output and color to reduce burn in, and we all know there is some type of display movement now to also reduce burn in, so it's odd you claim there has been nothing.
Anywho, I don't get burn in so yea, maybe with your attitude if you do, you deserve it?

I'm not going to start it by saying you're right, am I? Samsung didn't make changes to anything in light output the only thing that's changed is adaptive screen color which is meant to adapt the screen contrast to show what's on screen in the best possible colors. There is no new technology that will stop burn in. You must not have understood me. The image wiggle is a software attempt to stop screen burn in from happening but it won't stop it just slow it down. Screen burn in will continue to be a thing until the panels we use change technology. I didn't say that nothing has been made to prevent it.
And if you sense attitude in a straightforward response that's on you. I'll let karma deal with that comment. I personally don't get screen burn in and I've had a SAMOLED device since the Samsung Epic. I just understand how to prevent it. But just because I've never had it I won't tell people that they're overly concerned about screen burn in.

Brightness Too Bright?

Just got my black Huawei watch tonight and just love it. But I have the dang brightness on 1 and this thing is still too bright! I know its night time right now but just sitting in a normal lighting room and you can see that thing on from way far even on ambient mode!!
Do u guys feel urs is bright at 1!!
You can try this app, which I was recommended in another thread:

You can set your display *really* dark with this app.
I did not like the toggle mechanism though.

Foo, one freaking amazing app. I can't believe it's free. This made my watch usable at night. Can not thank you enough. Happy as can be
I would agree with it being a bit too bright at night on level 1. I have mine on level 1 100% of the time since I bought the watch. The only time I have a problem is when I'm in direct sunlight.
Last night we were at a club, so I set the always on screen to on, and I liked the glow from the watch. Couple ppl spoke to me about the watch last night, and I've had a few others in other places comment on it as well.

You can create darker faces using an overlay in something like Watchmaker too. Pretty easy to do. You can even set it to automatically get darker in the evenings.
But I agree brightness level 1 is sufficient for everything except direct sunlight and then I just flick on brightness boost.

Z5 Premium too dim on sunlight viewing - Overheating?

Hi all, i have experienced something strange with my Z5P. When i take a walk on bright sunny day, the screen got bright for about 2-3 minutes, but then it would go down to the dimmest state without any info. I tried to push it up manually but it won't do. so i decided to pocket it for a while and when i'm in shade, i turn it on again and it goes back to normal.. So my question is, is this normal due to 4K display? Or is it a bug in Marshmallow? Because it really makes me hard to read at outdoor after a while. The screen surface sure is hot though.. Anybody have the same experience?

I think this was happening in the other z series like the z1 too. But I think this because the phone would heat up and thus, the phone tries to cool down by doing that. I think there was a fix in the z1 phones but I'm not sure.

All phones from any manufactures with snapdragon 810 have an overheating problem (you can thank Qualcomm for that)...since the Z5p uses that SoC as well, this is a protection implemented by Sony so the processor doesn't fry your phone, your phone will get hot already watching a movie as you do under normal conditions, the situation will get even more steamy in full sun (on a hot day, it's fine when it's cooler outside)...the screen brightness is reduced to cool down the phone when it becomes too hot...
With that said there is a way change the value of the minium screen brightness (if you're rooted) to a higher number... If you search there is a thread about this in the Z5p forum already where someone posted where to find what to change...never tried myself by the way as you permanently change that value to some higher so it will be too bright the rest of the time and frankly I think that it will do more harm than good anyway...
Just let your phone cool down and you're good to go again...

Whatever floats your boat
If anyone have issue with this(Eveyone should), I have file that let you use 100% of screen brightness, of cause it's adjustable.
Basically let you have full control without Thermal limit kicks in.
Only thing is that the file can not be modified without ROOT...
Let me know
It's call thermal-engine.conf, all you have to do is change all the numbers under "backlight" to 255(Max value).
It works great, I've been using it as is for more than one year.
It's located Root/system/etc/thermal-engine.conf

Had the same problem, at least think so since I was never able to recover by cooling the Z5 so I am not sure.
Then, I installed Lux Auto Brightness.
The last 72 hours are much better and I was in the sun though not sure if the phone was overheating.
In settings I set Min brightness to 40%, linked ambient light of 0 lux to 60% brightness and let the app do its thing.
So far so good.
Let me know what you think.

No... I love it and the now playing music as well. The only issue I have is the AOD is too dim in a pitch black dark room. All other light levels it works fine. :good:
Does it move around like the Samsung phones or will it just burn in?

I don't use it but the AOD moves around, it doesn't stay stationary so it shouldn't cause burn in.

Always on is annoying to me I keep mine set to Lift to Check phone

Yeah, it doesn't move nearly enough to alleviate my concern of burn-in. Especially with this screen. On the S8 it would move all over the place, even down to the bottom of the screen. Now, that's how you prevent burn-in. Just moving it back and forth between a few small pixel variations is not going to properly prevent burn-in.
For this reason, I have always on display turned off. Not worth the risk to me.

I don't see how that helps. Burn in is caused by uneven pixel aging. If it's only moving a few pixels back and forth then it's really still the same part of the screen that is having the pixels age more than the rest of the screen.
Always on is always on here, no burn in so far. Works brilliantly.

No... I love it and the now playing music as well. The only issue I have is the AOD is too dim in a pitch black dark room. All other light levels it works fine. :good:

It's much improved in the dp2. Hopefully that sticks in the final release

One question about the Always On Display (I don't want to open a new thread for this) - is there a way to have the "Lockscreen"/Always-On-Display rotate to landscape mode?
When I am having my Pixel 2 XL on the magnet mount in my car in landscape mode, it would be great that the AoD also rotates...haven't come up with an idea yet, unfortunately.

I didn't say it helps I was just saying it does move to the post I quoted. That said I've had my phone since 10/19 with AOD on ever since and have no burn in.

Ok, my misunderstanding.
I got my phone on 10/24 and so far I have left AOD off. I have "Double-tap to check phone" and "Lift to check phone" turned on.
I have kept AOD off for 2 reason:
1. The fear of burn in. You may not have seen it but it does seem to me to be the most likely thing on the phone to cause burn-in since those pixels would always be on. Between 10 and 12 (am and pm) you would have the 1 digit always on and whatever shift occurs isn't noticeable so it's likely just than the width of pixels of the 1 digit. So you would effectively have pixels literally active 24 hours a day. That kind of worries me so I leave it off just as a precaution.
2. Impact on battery life. Having AOD on results in having to render, refresh and illuminate pixels 24 hours a day. Even with the great battery life I could still see the battery life being noticeably decreased.
I really wish there was more customization options, or at least the battery status displayed for AOD.

Fair enough. I tried turning it off last night and by this morning I turned it back on. Just getting ready for work this morning I missed not being able to glance over at the time as well as seeing it in my car on the dock. If there was a way to turn it on schedule or something that'd be nice. Maybe tasker could do it somehow..

If you use Accubattery, it displays the charge level on AOD with a circle around it. After the N6P I was paranoid about the battery so installed AB to confirm my battery was solid. (106% capacity). It may be a workaround until some dev comes along and provides that without having to install an app. Also THIS ARTICLE in XDA gives some hope. See the last paragraph on "other applications". :good:
I have a question on AOD. If you are listening to Google Play Music, does it show what song you are listening to? Or do you have to go to the actual lockscreen to see that? Thanks.
