[Q] USB connection problem - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

I've got a new Nexus 7 (2013) that I'm trying to connect to my 128gb PNY USB 2.0 Flash Drive(formatted NTFS). My device is rooted and I've tried multiple USB hosting apps such as Nexus Media Importer, OTG helper, and Stickmount but none of these have been able to recognize this drive. I have another old 1gb Cruzer that I have no troubles using and the 128gb PNY Drive works fine on my desktop. This makes me think the Nexus 7 simply cant power the Flash Drive however I have read others claiming they are able to power some larger Flash Drives and mid-sized external Hard Drives with much more space so I find it hard to believe I just managed to find the wrong brand drive. Sometimes the Flash Drive seems to get detected for a split second but before I am able to even finish connecting it is lost again. OTG Troubleshooter sometimes will not detect any device, other times it will detect the device for a quick moment and give issue #58277 yet other times it will pass the troubleshooting test and send me to connect to the device but by the time i get there it has disappeared. Any information on what may be causing this issue or what Flash Drives the Nexus 7 is capable of powering would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Jake

Try Paragon NTFS to set SELinux to permissible. I use both that app and Stickmount for my 64gb Sandisk Dual USB.

Paragon NTFS can't pick up the device either. I can only ever seem to get the device detected for a brief moment right after plugging it in so I guess its a power problem. I just don't see why this flash drive would take so much power. If anyone can confirm some higher capacity drives that work with the Nexus 7 that would be great.

Hi, were you able to solve this problem? I also have the same issue with this USB device. It seems to work fine on my Samsung S5, but not the nexus7 or S3.

[Q] Galaxy 10.1 USB connection kit problem, USB sticks

I've got an GT-P7500, and it will not read any USB Sticks.
Using the Samsung connection kit.
tried with 15 different USB sticks, all FAT32 formatted, all sizes 1-16gb.
A friend uses a 4gb stick in a GT-P7510, i tested that one, didn't work
Other things like usb mouse works, but not usb stick.
Anyone got any suggestions ?
Wonder if there is something wrong with it.
How do you know it isn't working? What directory are you looking at? What does the notification bar show? Which connector are you using? Is USB debugging on?
Also this is more a Q/A...
I'm hoping this thread is still alive because I am having the same problem. @ajnindlo I'm using the standard Samsung USB Connector with a 8gb usb stick. I've tried with USB Debugging on & off and I get the same message. "Damaged USB" and asked me to reformat.
I am using a Mac BUT I did format the stick as a ms-dos fat format.
Please help...
Thank you
PS. I know this is more of a q&a place, didn't know where else to post and didn't find any other with this problem but here. Please redirect to correct location if you know of a solution. Thank you
Just i hace received my USB kit and it works perfectly, my USB has 16 g and i haven't do anything to work, conected and work.

I had a 32 GB sd card and it also wouldn't be detected by my Galaxy Tab. But, I plugged it into my phone, plugged my phone into the computer, formatted the sd card and when I put in my Gtab, it worked.
I got my connection kit today but its not working at all.
Got 2 adaptors 1 for sd card and 1 for usb connection they both dont work.
Got no status bar message or anything.
Do I miss something here?

one catch that I have realized is that for proper identification of the USB Stick, the tablet must be in english language.
My friend had a hard time figuring out why his tablet won't show up any notification when a USB Stick was connected, whereas mine shows the "My Files" app showing the storage folder and all the contents of the stick, joking around I told him that was because my tablet was in english and his tablet was not.
Anyway, Astro file explorer doesn't work with USB Sticks, Use ES File Explorer instead and look in /mnt/ folder for usbdrive , there should be your content.
Nope still not working. No files found.
Feels like my device doesnt support usb host.
Is that possible?

Connect the usb stick, open ES File explorer and go to /mnt/usbdrive folder, if you can't find the folder (which is not on the sdcard) you need to configure ES File explorer to get out of the sdcard directory, the usbdrive folder is always present even if you don't have any usb drive connected
I had similiar problems with my 16GB P7510. It would only recognize any of my Sandisk sticks and a brand new PNY only at 30% of the time. The only stick it was reliable with was an ancient 256MB stick I had. I worked fine with my camera.
I ended up returning it for a 32GB P7510 and have not had any problems with any of the sticks. At the time I didn't think the tablet was defective but it appears it was.

I have exact the same issue, but it's strange, some SD has this issue, some don't.
"Damaged USB"
I found a trick, but it solved my problem only once: format SD card by a digital camera (Canon powershot) , SD was now recognized by Tab10.1
Putting some extra files on it by PC ... insert SD to Tab10.1 ... same issue again :crying:
Have tried several SD formats & sizes ... notting helps
Did someone knows a solution to solve this problem

Rooted, TASK 14 Rom

Correct ... but after a second or third time connecting same SD , issue returns
Have tried this, waiting for a while does helps time to time ... so I guess it's maybe "memory" or "kernel" (system) related.
It seems we have the same TASK14 ROM + Pershoot's kernel.
Strange things.
I made the test by unroot my device and went back to factory stock ... it look like the issue is solved for 90% ... it appears when you disconnect and reconnect to fast after the 1st disconnection .
usb not recognised
Nothing happens when i plug (several) usb sticks. /mnt/usbdrive is empty.
Any idea?
charging Problem
You must Check that Your usb Debugging is On or Not as it creates problems and this will be stopping You device from Accepting Usb Sticks..
I found that FAT 'sdCard's would mount , but that NONE of my NTFS sticks would mount
All my sticks are NTFS , so that was unacceptable.
rooted 7500 and 6800
Installed 'Paragon NTFS&FHS', from the AndroidMarket and all files now popup in 'MyFiles' when I insert the usb with the adaptor
I have the Samsung Connection Kit containing as USB and a SD adapter. The USB adapter works fine, but the SD adapter doesn't work at all. All it does is starting the TuneIn Radio app when it is connected. I uninstalled the app and now connecting the adapter has no effect at all. Any suggestions?

How do I mount a USB drive?

I've got 4.0.2 running - mice work fine. But how do I reliably mount USB drives? I tried downloading USB watcher OTG from the market, but the application is incredibly buggy and unstable.
Any other ways?
Thanks.
ICS and the Galaxy nexus no longer uses USB mount.
We now have something called MTP, and If you have the correct drivers installed your device should appear in my computer as a media device and then you just copy and paste as normal.
I have just had a ***** of a time getting my GN to show up in My Computer. In the end all I had to do was update Windows Media Player.

Lots of people seem to be getting these confused. I'm talking about using USB OTG to plug USB flash drives into the Nexus and then access the files on the drive.
MTP is working fine for me with both Windows 7 and Windows 8. No need for installation of drivers, it seems to be 'plug and play'.
Thanks for the reply!

ahh, got ya. I've had MTP on the brain since i couldnt get it working last night. I got it working just before i read your post
Mount command via something like terminal emulator? .. Not sure on the full details but it should be something similar, maybe?
Also I see you've jumped ship as well cjward ;-).
What a coincidence. Literally as soon as I posted this, Chainfire released StickMount, which allows automatic mounting of USB sticks in the Galaxy Nexus. For anyone else wondering, head over to the thread here:

are you running stock kernel or custom kernel.
i think unless you run a custom kernel, you will not be able to mount a USB drive.

I'm having a harder time finding an adapter that turns USB into micro. I ordered what I thought was the right product but when it arrived it's just to convert someother weird mini USB to standard micro. Anyone know the best place to get these? Preferably in the UK?

usb hard drive mounting problem

Hey Guys,
last time i bought an usb otg cable. I want to use it with my Gnex but i mounted it and in the file manager nothing appears. I tried several tools(stickmount, paragon ntfs). All time the directory is empty. Must i format it with exfat or another file system. My hard drive is 500gb large, ntfs formated and needs a second usb cable for power input(but i dont think thats the problem)
Thanks
I never had any luck trying to connect my external 500GB HDD to the Gnex. I asked the same question but never got any confirmation of anyone successfully making this connection, hopefully you have better luck than me. Subscribed.
I doubt the GNex puts much power out of its usb. Probably not enough for a HDD.
The power is not the problem, the device is already "mounted" but in the directory there is showing nothing... I googled for an hour or so but found no solution, hopefully my new ordered usb stick can do this
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
One of the reason it's not showing up could be the formatting in your drive,
most drives are NTFS which isn't recognized by GNex (don't know about other android devices).
Try formatting in FAT and let us know what happens, it should hopefully work than.

[Q] External Hard Drive not recognized (OTG cable)

Hello,
Here's my problem, I recently bought an OTG cable for my Samsung Galaxy Tab S (Stockrom 4.4.2, rooted), I plugged in my 16gb flash drive, it worked perfectly. Then I tried to use my 1TB Hard drive (not self-powered) but the tablet didn't recognize it, the power led didn't switched on. I tried the same operation but this time with my Galaxy S4 (Stockrom 4.4.2, rooted) and in perfectly worked.
Thank you for your help !
Its a laptop hdd or desktop? I've tried a laptop on my S and it worked perfect

Re
It's an external HDD, Toshiba 1 TB, may there be a tweak or something like that to make it spin? It's really weird that my GS4 runs it perfectly, whereas my Tab S, which has twice more battery power doesn't.
In addition, I bought it for that purpose !

So, try a powered USB hub.

I know you said that the led didn't turned on which means its probably about the power going through the connection but have you tried the app total commander yet?
Re
I know that I could use a powered usb host, but I think that's completely useless as it's just a new Samsung restriction which never existed before.
Yes I also did try Total Commander, unsuccessfully.
I'm 100% sure that the problem could be solved simply by flashing some files to increase the usb power limit like it's been until now.
Developers we're calling for your help. THANK YOU
btw, u said that you were able to access your 16 gb flash drive by just plugging it in right? did you have to do anything special to get it to work? i tried it on mine but when i plugged it in , 2 things pops up in the noti bar, Blank USB Storage and USB OTG Device Connected, i tried all sorts of ntfs apps but i couldnt mount it at all.
I tested my 16 gb NTFS flash drive, it works perfectly using Total Commander.
Hello,
I have external hard drive its 1TB and its NTFS formatted i used for the first time and my problem is my j5 prime can't detect the drive. When i connect the drive the led light is blinking but its not detected. I installed otg troubleshooters app and only the otg detected the drive didn't. I also installed total commander and still not detected. Is there anyone know what to do about it? Please help me.

OTG not working

So Ive run into a strange problem. I was watching a movie last night on my nexus, the file was on my usb drive connected via otg to the nexus. Today I try to do the same and I get no reaction from Stickmount when plugging in the drive. I have no problems charging or connecting the tablet to my PC, and the drive works fine both connecting to the PC and to my smartphone with stickmount as well. I also tried DLing an app called OTG Troubleshooter to see if that would help me. When connecting the drive it tells me that OTG is detected, but that "Mass storage USB device is not detected in linux/android". Does anyone know what the problem is?
Thanks in advance
Nexus Media Importer
I had a similar problem with the device not recognizing the OTG cable, it went away after I installed the Nexus Media Importer.

I tried with Nexus Media Importer as well, no success there either, it doesnt detect the drive. Thanks for the tip anyway
mine does the same thing with both stickmount and nexus media importer, I even tried 3 different OTG cables and flashdrives and get the same results

I have the same problem and have just tested that connecting a mouse or keyboard to the otg works without problems, what doesnt work is a flash drive. ( I have tried different flash drives to no success)
Does anyone know what the problem might be?

I uninstalled and then reinstalled it again and now it is working again. I think it might have been slow to update
Maybe you guys are using a Kernel with OTG+Charge option? if yes the problem maybe that you have to connect the AC charger and USB device together. If you don't need the OTG+charge you should deactivate that function.
