Need serious help resetting phone

Ok so I used to have a Samsung Captivate and knew how to root and flash ROMs, was pretty used to it.
I tried to do the same on my HOX, but ran into a bootloop and subsequently I think I've deleted everything on my phone. I used Hasoon2000's All in one kit and unlocked my bootloader, flashed TWRP v 2.3.3.0, but my problem arose after I tried to flash the kernel. It stayed in bootloop so I figured I'd back out and just restore back to the backup I made before flashing the kernel. However, after "successfully" restoring back I was still stuck in bootloop somehow. I know this isn't supposed to happen, it's supposed to restore back to the exact state of your phone at the time.
Anyways, I thought maybe I just needed to wipe things. I looked around and found a source that said to wipe cache, dalvik, factory reset, and system. Wipe those 4, but not external storage or android secure. So I wiped those 4 and I intended to try the backup again but it turns out that cleared everything on my phone. Now when I hit "restore" there is nothing to select. I also used to have a custom rom on the virtual sdcard, but that's gone too.
When in TWRP and I go into "install" the only thing in /sdcard is now TWRP. After looking around, it looks like my only option is to mount the phone to my computer via TWRP and somehow download the standard OS for my One X again. Also in the Mount menu it lists "mount system, mount data, mount cache, mount sd card" I can only check the first 3 options and when I do my computer asks me if I want to format it. I guess I can't mount the sd card because I deleted everything?
If anyone has the time to help me out that would be AMAZING. Right now I don't even care about being able to flash my custom ROM, I just want to get my phone back to functionality. I would love a conversation and would be willing to gmail chat if willing.
Also my phone is the ATT version, 2.20 (or I guess it was before I deleted everything).

I guess the fastest way to get your phone working again is using RUU file, you ll find how to do it here (method 2) or here
It stayed in bootloop so I figured I'd back out and just restore back to the backup I made before flashing the kernel. Restoring backup doesnt restore kernel ( boot.img ), you have to flash it manually with fastboot.

Dude. U think htc offers same freedom as Samsung . U are WRONG. If u flash a rom or restore a backup. U also need to flash boot.img separately from pc. Use fastboot flash boot boot.img. i assume you know the basics. Htc don't have s-off , so writing to nand protected system storage is restricted. If u read a little you might have got this. This will solve boot loop prob

So this is the situation,
I have SPH-l710 Rooted with CWM, I THOUGHT I made a backup of my stock system.....It made a image.zip and an image directory. SOOOO I flashed the phone with CM121...........In light of all the issues I could not get my camera to work with any app, them CM121 updated, Google play got stuck in a error force close loop that could only be avoided by logging into a separate user account on lollipop. Which is where the camera began to work oddly enough. Anyways I use my camera constantly and wanted to revert back to my 4.4.2 kitkat. SOOOO I booted into recovery and when I selected restore it couldnt find anything. So I installed from the image.zip and everything appeared to be fine EXECPT I couldnt get passed the second samsung logo right after the animation. Just stuck........How can I restore my poor phone back to my system image I have saved?
I tried this multiple times, then just reloaded CM121. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

You could Odin back to stock. What modem are you on? (Ex. nj3, nd8, etc)

I did find an image.zip and an image directory with my full phone backup i assume minus the damn splash screen that started this whole thing in the first place. Would I just use odin to flash the image.zip file to restore my original os or would I use CMW and install from zip and use the image.zip file?
And thank you for replying, it's hard to get anyone to help sometimes.

If you Odin to stock, you need a computer. You download the program (sadly Odin is leaked software so it's pretty shady; you could give Heimdall a shot but it didn't work for me, also Odin is Windows only and Heimdall is cross-platform) and then you download a .tar of a stock image and you plug your phone in in download mode and flash it.
However, there is no nj3 modem so you need to use an older one. Is your phone sprint, Virgin Mobile, boost, etc?

I would assume so, however, I'm not sure. I've only used TWRP and a little Philz for recovery. Afraid I can't help you there, but someone else (or Google lol) might know

OK I understand thanks, one more thing if I assume its a full backup of the phone would Odin be better to restore with or use whatever software created the backup?

I think Odin can only flash tars. Ideally, you'd want to restore the backup with the software that made it.

Cwm recovery does not create zip files. If you made a full backup in cwm it should contain system, data, and boot img files. Restore it in cwm recovery.
But to go back to KitKat from lollipop you must wipe internal storage in clockworkmod recovery first .(if that's the recovery you are using).
By the way cwm is pretty crappy. After you fix it, install twrp recovery.

Thanks for the reply, been tryin to get help for a while. So my version of CMW has the option to create an image backup & also create the same backup in zip format. Inside the zip and inside the image directory they have the boot img files and the system data and ect. I have 2 questions, 1 is what part of the internal storage needs to be wiped? I assume you mean format the system directory? which would wipe the os out at that point? And second since I have cmw installed if I wanted to put twrp on and not wipe the system yet would I need to just use odin and flash it to overwrite cmw? I installed cmw with odin to root the phone originally, cmw is not restoring my backups at all correctly so I would love something that would really work.

By wiping internal storage, I mean internal sd card (data/media) not system.
If you cannot restore your backup, and are not worried about losing your data, I would recommend using odin to flash the whole stock .tar and starting fresh from scratch. Then re root by using odin to install twrp.
If you are on boost or virgin Mobile use the ndc tar.

Thanks for the info, I will look into the tar I just need to make sure it's compatible with NJ3 and I am on Virgin mobile. I attached a snapshot of the file cmw created, Im pretty sure I saw a post on how to convert that into a flash-able tar file by combining them into one. That backup is clean except for a screwy boot splash screen and being rooted but besides that it was the first backup. Do you know if twrp has any issues with CM12.1? If I can flash my backup and un-root I would be able to start from scratch and do it the right way this time. I attached the snapshot just for your opinion on if I can use my backup from my phone if you dont mind, also to install twrp if I can use my backup I would need to unroot then re-root with twrp correct? If you put that back on your phone in the clockworkmod folder just restore it? If you flash the ndc tar in odin you will be stock unrooted. Ndc is the build before nj3. There is no nj3 tar so ndc is fine. If you manage to restore your backup and get going, you can just get the app flashify from the play store to install twrp. Get the image file of twrp 2.8.7.0 for sprint (d2spr) and install in flashify. Get it from twrp website.
Your backup only has system in it, it has no data. Next time do a full backup. System, data, and boot. You're trying to go from cm12.1 lollipop to KitKat touchwiz without a data wipe and restore. Won't work.
Honestly dude, you seem to have limited knowledge on this. Don't take that the wrong way at all. To save us both some time and get your phone working, just follow this

Not taken the wrong way, I am limited knowledge on the subject and that's why I ended up with problems. I appreciate the help since I could not get anyone to respond.

I appreciate the link, understand the process. Just wondering the link to the .tar file is broken (at least for the moment) I will continue to try it, do you know if the zip file from samsung-updates " L710VPUDND8 firmware version for Galaxy S 3 LTE (Sprint) "
will work also?

Nd8 will work, however nj2 is the sprint equivalent to nj3 (latest update). It works fine. It's the last one I used. You may need to do the dialer activation code to get service working after you flash. I think it's ##72786# . I'll check.

Stuck on boot after re-installing stock recovery

Hi, when I got the phone I rooted it by installing TWP recovery, it was all working fine after that until an OTA update popped up, after some research I learned that in order to install OTA updates you need to install stock recovery. Firstly, not knowing entirely what I was doing I installed the stock recovery for the wrong software version. The phone booted however and I tried to install the OTA update, upon restarting I was met with the "red triangle" error screen. I restarted the phone and it booted up fine.
Then having found the correct stock recovery (4.16.401.10) I installed it and ran the update again. It seemed to be going fine with the loading bars moving along nicely when it got stuck on the HTC bootup logo. From here I restarted it and now the phone turns on, shows the htc logo, then gets stuck on a black screen,

Hi, thanks for that, I guess I should have searched around harder. One question though, you mention that there is a way to restore just system to keep your data, I don't wanna loose all of my data so I'd like to do that, I'm just not sure how to apply that to your guide, what is it that I have to do differently to keep my data?

2 options :
1.
In step 8, select dalvik cache, cache, system but don't select data
In step 9, tick only boot & system and don't tick data
or
2.
Make a nandroid backup of your current ROM
Do all the steps, once completed the OTA reinstall TWRP and restore only data from your earlier made nandroid backup

The reason I rooted my phone to start with was to use titanium backup to restore apps from a previous phone, so if I can get the phone all stock just with my data, then I don't really need root.

That's almost same as option 1 above. You need stock recovery for OTA to work.
Most important is the system part must be stock with nothing changed.
Personally, I always do option 2 to make sure OTA is successfully done .. then restore data.
One thing to note ... you don't need to relock bootloader doing all these process.

Also, now that I've created the backup (stored to the phones storage), how do I transfer that to my PC, since the phone doesn't boot, the computer doesn't recognize the storage.

In TWRP you have option to enable MTP then both your internal storage and microSD can be opened on PC
Make sure to use TWRP 2.8.4.0 or newer or latest. I'm still on TWRP 2.8.6.0

It seems I'm on an older version of twrp (2.7.0.2), I made the backup using this version. If I update to a newer version now will the restore work properly?

Usually yes we can restore a backup made with older TWRP version but I'm not so sure about 2.7.0.2 as that is the buggiest TWRP among all versions but very popular because it is included in one very old and not updated toolkit.
Why don't install latest/newer TWRP then redo the backup then transfer to PC.

I'm having trouble viewing files on my pc, I select "mount" from the main twrp menu, it then shows a screen to select which partitions to mount, I tick them, then nothing happens. There's no button to actually start the mount.

I did mentioned enable MTP function ... see below on the right side you should see Disable MTP or Enable MTP (beside Mount USB Storage) .. not those partitions to mount (but in the same screen)

I think you were right about that version being buggy. Those buttons on the bottom were missing. Just installed the latest twrp and I can mount now as the buttons to mount are showing up. Hopefully all will be fine now

Hi, I'm following the guide now and when I try to wipe the phone it doesn't work, I get:
Wipe Complete
Failed
"Unable to mount /cache
failed to wipe dalvik"
This error repeats a few times.

Question about a full backup and rooting

Hi,
I recently tried a custom rom on my old phone and it worked pretty well. I liked the OS and now want to also do that on my current phone. But i do still have a few questions i hope you can help me with.
- Can i make a full backup of my phone (with app data) to my PC or maybe to my old phone? I am currently not rooted and tried helium backup but saw that sadly not all apps allow a backup.
- I know about titanium backup. Is there some way (if the above cant be done) i can root my phone without wiping the phone? So i can then use titanium backup to make a proper backup with data, then install the custom rom and after restore the apps+data.
In short: I hope i can somehow make a full backup with app data so i can install the custom rom and restore my app data again.

To root you need to unlock the bootloader, which wipes all user data. So you can't use root to backup your data. This is why I unlock the bootloader immediately after getting a phone.
You can try an adb backup though.

As long as i can make a full backup with abd (with app data), Im fine with wiping to root it. But just wanted to make sure i can get app data back after the root process.

Well with a few side searches i was able to open the cmd (admin), do a adb devices (which found a device) and then run the app + data command.
('adb backup -apk -shared -all -system -f C:\backup.ab')
I saw the screen on my phone to start it, which i did but it stays on Shared Storage (where before this mentioned the apk's that were being backed up). This is taking pretty long (as in hours). Is this normal or did something went wrong and is it stuck on that part?
Edit (Update): I stopped the whole thing and tried again. Now it finished in about 10 - 15 min. I did get a message "backup finished". However in the folder i gave up, there is nothing to see. folder is still empty
Edit2 (update): Found the backup.ab file. Apparently it was in a different folder i thought it would be. So if i then also make a copy of the internal storage and do this command, i should be good right? After doing that, unlock and root, i can use the 'adb restore C:\backup.ab' and have all apps + app data back as it was before the unlock/root ?

I'm not really sure what you mean though.
If i unlock my phone with my code and then make the backup with adb and just in case, a copy of my internal storage, can't i use restore on the unlocked/rooted phone to have the apps + their data back and use them again ?

That was some what the question of my first post.

Encryption will later on be optional through Phone Security Options.
Wipe dalvik and cache.
Reboot.
Wait a bit.

Yes but as you mentioned, unlocking means a full wipe. And i cant restore apps + their data from a stock phone backup to an unlocked phone as it can cause issues.
In my very first post i asked if i could make a backup of the apps + their data to restore them after unlocking/rooting/custom rom or whatever. Simple answer then is no.
So i either have to just wipe my phone and basically start all over, only unlock/root etc etc first.
Or just keep my phone stock like how it is now and just do nothing and wait until i get a new phone (which will be in a long time still)

Yes, but use unofficial TWRP from ROM section not the official one.
Backup boot, system image, vendor image and data.
Works for custom ROMs, not sure about stock ROM.
Also backup EFS and persist once in case you lost IMEI or sensors.

I unlocked my bootloader yesterday and my user data and files have not been deleted
but my other question is If i install twrp i lose?

I'm surprised that unlocking didn't delete your data, for me it did and it usually does.
For TWRP use fastboot boot <filename>.img to boot it and then flash the zip.
Normally that doesn't delete data, but always backup important data first.
I'm not sure how good TWRP handles encrypted data...I'm always unencrypted.
Before TWRP backup people say to remove pins and maybe fingerprints first (there are zip files for that) because then restoring will work better.
