Unrooting HTC Desire 820
Hey guys need urgent help!!! I have got an htc desire 820 and want to root it using TWRP. I did a lot of research and have a rough idea about nandroids and custom recoveries. Also i dont want any custom ROM. Just root access.Have a few questions.
1. I need to backup my stock ROM before rooting. Just in case something goes wrong. Is downloading the stock ROM from HTC website enough or do i need to do it from my phone using TWRP and transfer the file to my PC? Because after rooting(still on the same ROM...I'm assuming rooting with the superUser.zip file only gives me root access right?)the backup created through TWRP is still modified right? I mean if i flash that, my phone is still rooted right?
2. Before rooting my phone, i download the stock rom backup and save it on my PC. should i do any other safety measures?
3. If i want to get OTA update, copy that stock rom in twrp/backups and flash that and then flash stock recovery also. Then install OTA update i want to and again root by installing TWRP and flashing the same superuser file. Am i doing it right? or is there some other way of receving OTA updates for a rooted desire 820? Are there any other steps i need to do to get OTA updates?
I haven't yet rooted. So if you guys have any solution that changes the entire method of rooting like rooting without using TWRP is there, then that solution is also welcome. I hope i've made myself clear. Thanks in advance,

Where you will get stock ROM. I do not find single site for downloading HTC firmwares.
I agree with you that before doing any adventure, you should have stock rom available.
How to flash Stock Rom if you have rooted device? (from my experience of Galaxy Note 7000, I had to use Odin for flashing stock rom).

Good question. Never looked into that because everywhere it said downlaod stock firmware. I owned a samsung earlier. They provided stock ROMs in their website. Didn't find one for my device but it's there on the website for devices like htc desire 610. Just google it. Anyways i found a workaround for the OTA update. turns out you dont even need to have stock ROM!!! YAYYY!! u just need stock recovery and it will install OTA update. after updating, just install custom recovery again.
To answer your question, using a custom recovery like TWRP u can easily flash stock rom. (if you have the stock rom). Just put it under TWRp/backup. Go into recovery mode and select backup and click the file to flash!

I know some will say its answered somewhere in the forum , but i searched and it didnt give me a clear answer,
if i unlocked the bootloader and installed CWM and rooted my phone wothout flashing a new ROM, will i lose the ability to recive OTAs?
one more thing (sorry im asking alot) unlocking bootloader says that it will erase all phone data , does that include the SD card part of our phone since its internal ? will i lose the photos stored , or its just like flashing an RUU
Thank you so much

Firstly, yes you will lose the ability to receive OTA updates. With regards to the SD Card this will remain untouched.

Are you planning on using a stock rom or a custom rom?
EDIT: Sorry didn't read properly. Yes if you are using stock rom then you should be able to download the OTA update from somewhere on XDA. If you are using a custom rom then the chances are the Dev would have already updated there rom to the latest base.

in my understanding , you will have to unlock the bootloader and install a CWM recovery to root your phone and keep the stock ROM, but you will have to download and install the OTAs manually

Just flash back the stock recovery, relock the bootloader, reboot the phone, receive OTA update and install. Then re-root process again to have root access.

[Q] JB OTA update fails on rooted Vodafone One X

Hello guys,
I have a HTC One X from Vodafone, rooted, unlocked, stock rom, custom recovery, and today (FINALLY ) I received the OTA update to Jelly Bean.
I downloaded it and tried to install it using the custom recovery but it was failing on some assert. I guessed that it was because of the recovery so I flashed back the stock recovery and tried to install; fail again.
Went online and found the directory for the update log and saw an entry saying that there was a problem trying to verify the stock Dropbox apk that comes with the phone and that is placed on /system/apps. I read somewhere that if you modify something on the stock apks the OTA would fail, and unfortunatelly I did, I flashed the Galaxy S3 Dropbox apk on my phone, but that's not the problem, the problem is that I deleted the flashed Dropbox and the stock Dropbox from /system/apps without knowing it and the OTA is still failing.
My guess is that if I can flash the stock Dropbox apk to /system/apps, the OTA will try to verify it and will succeed, and therefore I'll have finally Jelly Bean on my branded device (as I said, is just a guess) so if someone could please send me the stock Dropbox apk, the one located in /system/apps as well as any other file located there that could possibly be related to Dropbox app, it will be very very appreciated.
If you guys think that I'm missing something here and even after flashing the stock Dropbox apk the OTA will still fail for some karma related reasons, please let me know and help me out.
If you need any other info from my phone let me know too.
If you need the .zip file with the official update from Vodafone I have it too.
Thanks in advance.
TO update OTA you SHOULD HAVE ONLY stock recovery and STOCK boot.img(kernel) ..and this way everything will be ok.

I'd like to just flash the Android Revolution HD JB ROM but im scared of bricking my phone and there is no easy guide to accomplish this - the guides ive seen on youtube are for other ROMS...
So, now that JB is out OTA for my stock ROM I want to update to it but I get stuck...
All ive done is unlock my bootloader - Ive never even flashed a custom ROM!
Wish I'd never done it now...way too complex

I think they're right, if I hadn't touched the system apps then I think the update would work, having only unlocked and rooted. Right after you try to install the update, go to /cache/recovery/ and check the logs for any clues on why the update is failing.
I'll try flashing the RUU for my phone, then applying the OTA and the rerooting as suggested, maybe you should try the same.
And rule number 1 after flashing cwm custom recovery is
always do a nandroid backup from the stock rom ! Now you know why its important.so when you go to JB and start rooting and running custom roms.....do the nandroid backup to avoid these situations !

You need to flash the stock recovery !
Do this command
Fastboot getvar version-main
If a number pops up starting with 2.17 you need to flash back this recovery
http://db.tt/U5CK4noo
And yes you did more than just unlock the bootloader, be specific .... it's necessary for this phone otherwise it gets confusing !

Yes, I thought i flashed stock before but am about to confirm
The goal after unlocking the bootloader is to flash a custom recovery to flash different roms.....therefore i doubt u flashed the stock recovery.....unlocking the bootloader and flashing a stock recovery doesn't make sense

Yes, sorry - i did read it and it did say 2.17xxx...I downloaded the recovery you pointed me to but expect i need to re-unlock the bootloader. (I re-locked it before thinking that was causing the issue...)

There is a good chance you are correct. The file in my fastboot folder said recovery and I assumed it was what I was after but it may have been connected to something that I was told to download in the unlocking process (I followed a guide on Youtube by a chap called cursed4eva)
I'm reunlocking the bootloader now because I got an error wh3n i tried to flash that recovery img. "writing 'recovery'... FAILED (remote: not allowed)"
---------- Post added at 01:24 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:34 AM ----------
Okay - so I
1/ reunlocked the bootloader which basically wiped the phone back to its initialt state all be it with an unlocked bootloader.
2/ once again completed the OTA download of Vodafone Jellybean for the One X
3/ flashed the 2.17 recovery img that Marcel provided
4/ tried to update
5/ am currently looking at a download / progress bar! (YESSSS!)
6/ am hoping this works!
Thanks a lot Marcel. I very much appreciate your patience!

I already have the RUU for my phone, and I was planning to follow this tutorial: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1660807
But I was thinking, what if I flash only the system.img instead of all the 3 files? I already have the stock recovery (the one you provided) and I've never changed the boot.img so I still have the stock one.
What about if I flash the system.img only, and then try the OTA update? Do you think that would work?
Thanks for the help.
Yes you can try that, the phone is already wiped with unlocking the bootloader, i never tried it. But in logical terms it is possible yes. If doesn't work you can always run the complete ruu !
That's weird, I'm getting error 00000006 when trying to flash the system.img.
Reading on other posts that's related to the size of the file, which is around 1 GB. If I can't flash the system.img I think I wont be able to run the entire RUU either.
Do you know a way to bypass this error?

yes, you need to find out your cid and main version using this command "fastboot getvar all", then you need to flash the stock recovery and stock odexed rom, relock bootloader and then you should be able to receive OTAs... look around for guides

don't worry, i'll try to help you the best i can first of all it's important you learn something about fastboot (what is? how do i use it? how can i set it up? ), recovery (what the hell is a recovery? are there stock and custom recoveries?) cid and main version (cid??? main version??? :crying later, everithing will be easier... to learn the basic, look around in general section, in q&a or in android developement section... or, more simply, use search button or google it when you'll have learnt all those stuffs, then you'll be able to follow guides to revert the hox back to stock if you have any question ask freely, i'm here to help you (just like all the other more experienced members of this great comunity) :good:

Basically the phone will get update via OTA if it's on stock rom and stock recovery. Seem yours is not on stock rom.
My question is: how do you know there is an update when your phone is having trouble with "check for update" function?
Aldo, pls post the screenshot of "Software information" and Kernel information (click "More" inside Software information).

I asked just to make sure your phone is not on 4.2.2 and that you want ota 4.3 update.
Well, by the screenshot, you're on custom rom.
Now if you want stock 4.2.2 with sense 5 please do as follow:
1. Flash stock rom 4.2.2 (odexed) or nandroid
- Steps:
+ Identify your cid, and download stock rom or nandroid backup
+ Unlock bootloader (if locked)
+ Flash custom recovery (twrp, cwm..) and copy rom to phone memory (sd card)
+ Boot into recovery: Either flash stock rom or restore from nandroid backup file (remember to follow rom instruction carefully)
+ Reboot and there you go.
2. In case there is no 4.2.2 stock rom/nandroid but 4.1.1 only:
- Do same as above steps and your phone is now at stock rom 4.1.1
- Flash stock recovery (required)
- Reboot and check for OTA 4.2.2 update
- After OTA update, perform nandroid backup and save for future usage.
Report the result.
EDITTED:
Please make sure to backup your phone's data before proceeding as you might lost during rom flashing!

Sorry being quite busy with work these days.
Ok, you have downloaded nandroid file, now find stock recovery to download and follow the steps:
- Copy nandroid file to phone storage
- Flash any custom recovery (philz, cwm or twrp) on your phone. Instructions can be found on the recovery threads.
- Boot phone into recovery, select install from zip file, browse to the nandroid backup file and proceed.
- Wipe all if boot loop.
- Flash stock recovery
- Reboot phone
Now your phone is in stock status which is ready for ota update. Go "Check for updates" and see..

[Q] [OTA]Can't update via CWM Recovery?

I got OTA notification today and it can't be installed automatically. The CWM Recovery does not mount /system at start hence error 1. Then I tried to install the OTA zip file manually using CWM but got error 2 as attached. Anyone can help?

Thank you very much!! :good:
I'm not good in Chinese (null, really ) So, whether I understood right that 1,22 clockworkmod.rar is an official ROM?
I have one more question to you considering bootloader unlock. Your wrote in here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2697994 "1.Unlock bootloader at http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/(Model selection: HTC one)". Can you tell me, please, will it give UNLOCKED status with S-ON or S-OFF? Cause I made this unlocking procedure through Kingo HTC Bootloader Unlock... and it gave me UNLOCKED with S-ON... Then, with ROOT, it added TEMPERED to HBOOT screen... I'm not sure, what does it mean. Before I had Huawei... it was much simpler to customize it... as long as I'm pretty new to Android.
kinghunki, I used your ROM from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2712315 I'm sorry that I ask in this theme... but I have no right to write in the development section. And I have a question to you concerning this ROM. Why I cannot change installation options? Well, I can change them in the installer. However, when installed, ROM doesn't reflect my choice... but install only those apps that were predefined instead... I tried to re-install 3 times... but have no result.... Only predefined options were installed each time.
Thank you very much for your time and understanding!

Have you root acces?
If yes, you can do it
Step 1
Go to /dev/block/platform/dw_mmc*/ on any root file explorer.
*dw_mmc on my phone is "soc.0"
Step 2
Run Terminal Emulator
Code:
ls -al /dev/block/platform/dw_mmc*/by-name
*dw_mmc on my phone is "soc.0"
Step 3
This one will give you info about the dev block names WITH their familiar names (i.e, boot, recovery, system... etc)
On my phone RECOVERY partition have name "mmcblk0p43"
On the other phones should be the same (same model).
Step 4
Code:
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p43 of=/sdcard/recovery.img
File recovery.img should be created.
sorry no root. Waiting for 5.0
I found orginal recovery.img image on new OTA update.

If you are an indian user then can you please post recovery.img over here...
Yes! Appreciated if you post the link. Till date we do not know any single site which keeps listing of all firmwares of HTC which can be downloaded. Earlier I was using Galaxy Note. For Samsung, you can easily download firmwares from sites - Sammobile or samsung-updates.com. Few Chinese sites are there but it is very difficult to understand evenif you use Google Translate. So, sharing will be highly appreciated.
Regards,
D820n
If it work for d820n can you please upload it
Please share the recovery with us. I tried tons of recoveries for the d820 that you can find on the internet. None of them worked. I cant update or flash my phone due to missing recovery.
Edit:
I figured it out. I downloaded the newest ota-update via system settings. The update file can be found in download folder in your internal storage. I extracted the recovery.img from the .zip and flashed it via WinDroid 2.4 (go to Commands then flash recovery). I tried to boot into into recovery to have a look if it works. I got stuck in a black screen with a red triangle. Then i turned my D820 and it booted properly. I tried to update the system via ota and voilà: it worked. System runs smooth.
I got an Optus (Australian Carrier) phone so i don't know if my recovery will work on other D820's. And its the D820 Single-Sim with Snapdragon 615 quad-core processor. But if you guys want to try it at your own risk i will post my recovery here.

Do you mean that you rooted your device first using TWRP or CWM, downloaded ota and flashed it's recovery then flashed the whole ota?
Anyway, I'd be glad if you can give me a copy of your recovery.
By the way, was your ota v1.21.401.1? My D820n single sim is running it.
Yes, that is what i did except root. I got stuck on flashing TWRP because none of them worked for me.
My ota is 1.01.980.1_R. I can not post links because i am a new user. I'll send you a pm with the link.
If it will not work you might try another recovery from a different ota. Therefore just check on htcdev all available ota-updates for the HTC D820.
