Hello my friends, my name is mrtaylor and I am reasonably new to the forums and pretty much a newbie when it comes to things like this too.
bare with me, probably scaring you all off by saying that but I have an announcement!
I've spent the last few hours tinkering away and have come up with four useful tools to help people that are not to familiar with android and need a hand when it comes to modding, rooting, etc.
the tools I have created are not "new" by any means but i have put them all together In an easy manageable folder with everything needed to execute them.
Tools Included
Root
Installing Custom Recovery
Removing Unlocked Bootloader Warning
Restore Without Data Wipe
These are just a couple to get started and before I continue with the development of these and decide to turn it into a fully fledged executable tool with nice pretty colors and ponies i need a few people to TEST them.
So, anyone interested then please reply to this thread and I will PM you the dl link, i would really appreciated the help and feedback.
these tools are based on the xt1068 build but I'm sure they will work for all models.
this thread is also a WIP.

Currently on Oreo, December 1st patch

Hey team,
I'm very new to working with smart phone bootloaders and flashing different ROM's. Currently I have only ever played with ADB a little bit, have never come close to flashing another ROM/firmware, let alone rooting.
Here's the thing, is that I've very interested in running a couple operating systems on my S7 Active, however it seems that if I am on Oreo, this process becomes much more difficult.
I come here for 2 reasons, first is that I need points to ask questions in other forums. I figure here is the best place to start on getting answers and where to look for information.
My second reason is so that I may get some help / information on how to get my S7 Active set up for using at least 2 operating systems - Regular Oreo, as well as Android's PostMarketOS. I am a new user, so I cannot post a link, however you can find it at reddit r/PostMarketOS. I am fully aware that I will likely need to build my own version of PostMarketOS. I'm not here for help with this, so much as I am here for getting help to prepare my S7 Active for this process.
So, I suppose to start, my questions are as follows:
1. Am I stuck with Oreo?
2. While I have unlocked OEM in developer settings, I feel that there's more to unlocking the bootloader - is there information for Oreo on how to do this?
3.I understand that there is root for Android N (7.0), however I have read that you cannot downgrade to (7.0). Furthermore, I am not sure if this would even be necessary.
To give a bit more information, to create the PostMarketOS for Android, it must be created using Linux, and I have a link to post, however I am a new user, the guide for creating PostMarketOS is on the sidebar of Reddit.
Hopefully I can get some help, but I would be happy with just some resources on where to go about starting/finding information. I'm a total noob in this regard, but I am a quick learner and motivated to get my S7 Active to not run so laggy... Plus it would be fun to use 2 operating systems
If you need any other information, I'm happy to find and give it.

Help - detailed guide to install custom rom needed after rooting

Hello,
I'm a little stuck on how to install a custom rom on my RN8 Pro after rooting and wondered if someone could answer my questions / explain certain points in a simpler way that some of the guides in this forum. Ideally I'd like it explained as if you were trying to guide a 5 year old - I say this as the was an XDA guide exactly like this for my last phone which was fantastic and had no ambiguity.
I'm currently on:
- chinese rom
- MIUI11.0.3.0.QGGCNXM stable 2.0G
- Android 9
I believe all steps for unlocking the bootloader and rooting are complete. I followed the steps in THE ORIGINAL POST of this guide (I don't think the rest of the posts in that thread are relevant but not sure): https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-8-pro/how-to/guide-unlock-bootloader-flash-twrp-root-t3995919. Everything seems to work as detailed and Magisk Manager was installed though I've done nothing with this and not sure if I need to. Is this correct?
I'd like to install Lineage so, following a link from another thread in this forum, I've downloaded "lineage-17.1-20200607-UNOFFICIAL-treble_arm64_avN.img.XZ". Is this correct or should I be looking for a ZIP? If so, where?
Assuming the above .XZ file is correct (or after I get the correct file from somewhere), what are the exact steps I need to follow to actually install the rom? I've read things referencing Dalvik cache, clearing certain things, etc but I'm really unclear on this bit and still not sure on the install process. I thought the mega thread would help but there's so much info there I'm even less sure what's applicable or not after reading it. I assume the TWRP I installed in the guide I followed above is used (or maybe an updated version?) but I'm hugely confused over the precise steps to take - the guides seem very detailed on unlocking / rooting but too brief (for me) on rom install. This is the point I would really like explained as if it were to a 5 year old please, along with any followup steps required.
I'm also unsure on the steps required for a backup in case things go wrong. Again, the various threads appear to have different methods depending on what version of TWRP you have installed (I think this is true, as I said I'm confused after a certain point). Maybe the points I did in the guide I followed covered this but I'm doubting it.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated - the chinese rom is driving me nuts and I'm really keen to move from it.
Thank you
you miui build is android 10 based (check the "Q" after the version number), so recheck the threads just in case.
Thank you for the reply but I dont understand. I've gone into all specs at it says:
Device name: Redmi
Device model: Redmi Note 8 Pro
MIUI version: MIUI 11.0.4 | Stable | 11.0.4.0(PGGCNXM)
Android version: 9
Android security patch level: 19/12/01
Are you saying the Android version is 9 but the MIUI is based on 10? If so that confuses me even more. There is a MIUI update pending (it's been wanting to update for a while) but I've held off installing it.
If you are correct and I need to downgrade (I think that's what you're saying?) then I'm pretty sure I understand how to achieve that part. It's the actual installing of the rom where I'm confused. For example, is the IMG.XZ the correct file type? Exactly what do I do to install it? Etc. The guides here spend a lot of time on the unlocking part - which for Xiaomi phones is a pain so understandable. It appears to me a bit less detailed on the rom install - likely because people on this site may have done this many times before. That's the bit I;m querying and unfamiliar with so any links to step-by-step guides (particularly for Lineage) after rooting would be helpful.
Thanks again for your response
hey man, check your first post, the miui version number (MIUI11.0.3.0.QGGCNXM), it says it's an android q (10). i've just wanted to tell you to be careful and eventually not brick your device, that's all
Thanks for the reply - I really appreciate it.
Bricking it is the last thing I want to do
I'll re-read the other threads (3rd time) but i'm not hopeful that I'll be able get anything more out of it than I already have. I think i've understood a fair bit of it (up to unlocking) but just can't seem to find a step by step guide for the rom.
Hopefully someone else will be able to chip in with some advice and thanks for what you've offered so far.
Thanks

Any AOSP (de-googled) Secure ROMs out there?

Yes, I made a mistake... I was tired of my completely locked and unsupported Samsung S7 and wanted something sleek that would be rootable/ROMable - so I purchased the OP7T after only a cursory web search for root/roms (and quick XDA threads). Saw a few ROMs posted so off I went to eBay... Yes, I beg forgiveness and patience from now on in this post. My unsupported Samsung was still able to get a "patch" for contact tracing... I love the OP7T, it is fast, and Oxygen is a refreshing change from my past OEM Firmware on LGs and Samsungs (fortunately was able to TWRP and Lineage my old LGs). However what I really want to do is Brax the phone (and yes, I know the consequences, but the whole point of MODing a phone is it gives the user/owner a chance to make their own choices). I want to install a ROM without GAPPS, no google at all. FDROID, and open source only if possible. I don't game on my phone, it is a communications tool only. I truly wish I was smart / talented enough to build out a ROM on my own but I am dependent on those who often reside here for options the OEM and carriers will NEVER make available. If anyone has any suggestions for this 7T they would be greatly appreciated. The frustrating part is that a lot of the listed MODs/ROMs I found thus far include GAPPS. There may be a way to remove them from the custom ROM, but again I am not a DEV. I have some linux skills, but those are all sys admin, not coding by even the lamest of stretches.
Again, to any forum member/power user/or dev that responds - thank you for even taking the time. I know this is a noob type post. But I am desperate to try and accomplish this task after a hardware investment that may have been misguided. With this year (in the US) going as it has, I want big tech out of my pocket - literally.
Thank you for your time,
XGhost
AOSiP (official, not gapps version) doesn't have Google services in it.

You also have MSM xtended with out gapps. Many options.
Ok, looking deeper and finding more hope than originally found. Thank you for the input and now I just need to take the plunge and start digging into the phone and the firmware. Unfortunate about TWRP, but there are plenty of good options to manage it without that. Take care!

I don't know, it's probably ok.
Motorola Update Policy
Basically, Motorola will only provide One major Android update and two years of regular security updates.
But may extend support for devices that see longer than normal usage.
9 to 5 Google said:
For instance, this policy depends on the majority, so people who switch/upgrade their devices early could ruin the long-time use of a phone for others. Further, it’s just a paradox. Motorola is essentially saying that it will update phones the longer people keep them, but people will be more likely to upgrade their phone if they feel it’s been abandoned.

Motorola just announced a new Android update policy that paradoxically ties long-term support to how long most customers keep their phones.

Does Motorola still use blur_* OTA updates? If so, is there any other tool to get them? I tried the OTAU.exe and the online version... Couldn't find anything. Also, OTAU says it couldn't find the software version. I entered it manually, but still, it doesn't find anything.

Great info all easy to find!
I tried everything I could think of to find the stock ROM to get the boot.img out of to use Magisk on for my Moto g32 XT2235-2 (devon) and did not find it anywhere. No PC to run the Lenovo assistant (although this is my backup plan if nothing else works in a few days is find someone with a PC - I've used the tool before and it has saved phones for me that I messed up somehow).
Is there any way to pull the boot.img out of the phone itself with unlocked bootloader using fastboot commands or something?

Thanks for the link. It looks like that is for the xt2235-1 which by "retbr" I'm guessing means retail Brazil. I was looking to find xt2235-2 / "reteu" or retail Europe. I might try it eventually, but I'm in no hurry so I'll probably wait. Perhaps Lineage or other ROM will eventually be made.

Need Custom ROM for Huawei MediaPad M2

I would like to request for a custom rom MediaPad M2-A04LV100R001C137B022
I have followed this thread : https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...nd-root-your-huawei-mediapad-m2-8-10.3322340/
to root my tablet but all the links are dead.
Please any help would be really appreciate
I'll 2nd that request, specifically for 802L.
Considering the current state of electronics supply chains (semiconductors) and the aging and/or boring tablets on the market ATM, this may be a good time to kick start a custom ROM for this device.
I have a developer background and would be keen on trying a "roll your own" ROM but have questions before I get started:
Considering the age of the last software release (ROM) provided for 802L, would the current drivers work with the latest Android kernel?
Can anyone suggest a helpful 'roll your own' guide (noting I'll be searching XDA forums myself, but recommendations can sometimes speed this process up a bit)?
There has been (what appeared to be) a custom ROM some time ago. I'd love to hear from the developer (ajsmsg78) and what they may suggest moving forwards (if that is a good idea to do so considering my first point above).
It may take me a while to get started as I don't want to brick my device, and I don't have the "unlock OEM" option in my developer menu either (looks like KingRoot may be the way... if it still exists).
Any guidance for this n00b would be greatly appreciated.
It's a shame that my m2-802L, although more capable than my newer Samsung tab A 2017, has to be obsoleted because of the outdated Android OS! So an updated custom firmware would be great.
Would live to revive this table/phone as well.
M2 10 lte
M2A01L custom firmware neded too
great i am looking forward to a custom rom for this device
