Everything I can find that gives a version number says that the "new" upgrade is 3.6.8. If you recently purchased a new fire phone, you already HAVE 3.6.8. So, for those of us who got in on the $199 deal, we already have the update and we're getting nothing new at this time. I got all excited, but I already have 3.6.8.
You CAN sideload google apps (I can't get google photos, but I think that is a function of the underlying android os being 4.2.2). If anyone has an apk for google photos, I'd appreciate it. I couldn't find it on the play store.

In my experience, Photos comes along for the ride when you install Google+. If you haven't done that yet, try installing it; if you have, then chances are the Fire Phone isn't going to display it as a separate app (unless you use a custom launcher).

Is it a good buy ?

Currently i have an lg g2 but it has a defective screen. Im looking for another phone on the price range of 200. I can get the fire phone which i actually pretty intrested in or i can get the huawei ascend mate 2 or another lg g2 in brand new condition. I dont mind the amazon fire os and im leaning to the fire phone but what do you guys think ?
It's super easy to install Google services and while we have had to deal with our Google stuff going down for a couple of weeks when they updated, everything has been fine since then. If you use prime services it's a no Brainerd because the current cost is 179 and if u were going to get prime it's basically a 80 dollar phone. I don't regret it and I've been a strictly android user since I got the google g1 many years ago. I don't even mind the Amazon launcher. You just have to get used to the swype up for back and Netflix isn't working with chromecast.
It depends how you are going to use your phone, I'm on my second fire phone, sold the first because it was running android 4.2 and Android Wear needs 4.3 at least to work, now that the KitKat update is here, I gave it another go, bought used cheap on eBay, £95, the reason for this, really like the build quality, screen, specs and camera, really good pics in low light. I had the G2 as well and the fire camera is just a bit better IMO.
Now the negatives
The screen is a bit too tiny, awesome for one hand use, but I prefer the 5"+ screens.
No notifications icon on the status bar, if you have any missed notifications, you have to pull down the notifications to see them, that is why having a android wear device is essential if you don't want to miss any notification.
G2 Battery is better, fire phone does last a full day, but G2 is awesome when it comes to battery life.
This is a big one for me, no custom ROMs, I'm using Google Now Launcher to make it more like a pure android phone, but miss flashing custom ROMs
Tip:
If you are going to sideload Google Play Store, please have this in mind, search first for the app on the amazon store, if you can't find it there, than use the play store, had some issues before by doing this... also disable auto update from Play store, because Facebook for example, it has to be the Amazon App store version, just a couple of things to keep in mind if you want a stable phone =)
So if you want a different phone from most people, great build quality, compact, fast, good camera, this is for you, if you want a phone tried and tested, with a big screen and with with custom ROMs, than go for the G2
I got one brand new for £99 in the Amazon sale recently. It's good spec but I like tweaking my setup with custom launchers etc and it isn't too good for that. I'm using the stock fire OS launcher but I've got a gesture app installed now and a t9 launcher assigned to it and all sorts of other crap. Other launchers generally throw up issues I've found. If you're into Amazon for kindle and prime video it's probably worth it. By the way, do uk users get the one year free prime? I didn't see anything when I ordered!

Why do you say so? I've installed every app from play store without collateral effects, even Facebook. And i have play store auto updates enabled and working too. What problems did you have with FB taken from play store?
Well amazon took the offer of 179 away so i guess im going for the lg g2. Really wanted the fire phone but i need a phone now and i was going to buy it Friday. Does anyone know how often amazon put the fire phone on sale?
Sent from my LG-D801 using XDA Free mobile app
i love it, but i came from a s2, so it was a massive upgrade for me
FB was one of the apps, the issue I saw with some apps, was the icon would simply disappear from the Amazon launcher and the only way to open the app, was going to play store, search the app and press "open" through there, so I did a factory reset and disabled updates from play store and now all good, weird that you did not experience that and I did...
Wow can't believe it, $450 now. Anyway I love my fire phone. I use Google now launcher with gel customized, software keys via udn app, of course I use the play store and rooted with a proper superuser.

What Is Lost by Staying with FireOS instead of Switching to CM?

There is an XDA thread entitled What Is Lost by Moving to CM from FireOS. This thread is the opposite: What is Lost by Staying with FireOS instead of Switching to CM?
Now, obviously, there is a difference in UI, which involves a substantial amount of individual preference. Some people like FireOS, others like CM.
But what concrete things are unavailable that a typical Android user may want?
For example, as of this posting, it appears that Amazon Underground will not (ironically) work on the Amazon Fire Phone.
Which common apps will still not work reliably with FireOS?
Anything else?
That depends. Do you mean to side load Google Play services and the Play Store?
I think FireOS (with root, Google Framework etc) you would keep all Amazon stuff.. on CM, you would lose everything related to the Amazon framework stuff. I personally just stay on root for now.

From everything I'm reading here on XDA, there does not seem to be a reliable way to get it work (and stay working)... or has someone found a way?

I've had Google services running OK since I installed several months ago. I'm sticking with rooted stock with a third party launcher. IMO this combination works fine and I've pretty much zero annoyances with it.
The threads for the roms are pretty clear on the bugs: lots of camera issues, no mute, no nfc, Play service crashes. Some people are also reporting call drops and wifi issues on certain channels. If you read through the thread you'll notice a few people end up switching back to stock FireOS.
My phone updated to 4.6.4 when I got it so Google Play Services won't work (unless I downgrade to 4.6.3, but I don't want to start flashing stuff just yet). Right now I'm using a combination of F-Droid and apkmirror to sideload apps like FireFox and alternate launchers. I've gone through the pre-installed apps and disabled some of the Fire OS crap like Quick Start, AT&T app, Facebook and Twitter connect, Telemetry junk, etc. Some apps like Silk Browser will not stay disabled (because it does an update and I haven't figured out how to stop it from auto-updating).
Right now I'm REALLY missing Google Inbox.

Disable the following apps:
• Amazon Device Client Platform
• DCP Platform Contracts
• System Update(s) - yes, there are 2 apps with that description, disable BOTH
This will stop all updates: app updates and OS related OTA updates.

This is the part that confuses me... some people say Google Play store is working fine on FireOS and others say it won't work. Can you explain why the different reports? Does it all come down to downgrading to FireOS 4.6.3 and sticking with that version? If so, isn't Stagefright an issue?

Bottom line: Google Play Store & services...
• ...work well on the "GSM unlocked" OS versions - 35.4.6.1 (461013820) and 35.4.6.3 (463001620).
• ...doomed on the "AT&T" OS versions - 32.4.6.1 (461013320) and 32.4.6.4 (464000420)
• GER version of the OS was problematic as well, tested it myself in the beginning (just as another example)
Using the latest US "GSM unlocked" 4.6.3 (463001620) is the best option, all known Stagefright vulnerabilities are patched in this one*.
And yes, all OS versions can be installed on all devices, netlock is ofc. not affected, multi language support is available.
Using the AT&T verson is a lost cause, because you have to use a work around, e.g. blocking updates of the Play services or uninstalling Play services updates everytime they update.
It's a dead end, because (some) apps will demand a newer version of the Play services, so all the effort is not worth it.

I blocked updates after 461 as I anticipated problems. Stage fright isn't much of an issue because I use a third party SMS app and block auto retrieval of MMS messages. Then again, I never send or receive MMS.

WOW! That is great info! THANK YOU! :good: That should be part of a FAQ (or a FAQ on its own).
Questions:
If you buy an AT&T Fire Phone, and it includes the unlock code, will you still have the problems since it still is the AT&T ROM?
When buying a phone, besides asking the seller to turn it on and tell you the version of the ROM (which they may not do if it is new in the box), how do you know if it is a GSM unlocked version or the AT&T version?
Does the GSM unlocked version of FireOS only auto-update to new GSM unlocked versions, or has Amazon merged everything into one FireOS version at this point?

Yes, the unlock only changes some information stored in a chip, eeprom maybe, who knows...
Problems are caused by the ROM, so the best thing to do is:
Receive new phone, boot it up, don't register anything and don't connect to WiFi, check the installed version, if AT&T:
Power off the device, sideload the 4.6.3 image via ADB recovery (there's a link in my sig. "Fire Phone stock recovery: factory images")

Fortunately, the seller doesn't need to boot it up, on the box is a sticker with basic info like: storage size, OS version, IMEI, UPC... so as long as the seller is honest, it should be clear which version is actually on the device.

Each version is independent and it will stay that way, wouldn't make much sense for them to change it and I guess there are some agreements they made with AT&T which have to be met...

Well, it does read the short version number, like "OS V 3.6.0" but the seller knows ofc. that he bought (e.g.) a pallet full of AT&T devices because it has to be declared on the paperwork.
edit: A 2nd sticker on the other side of the box states: "the device can only be used with a SIM card from T-Mobile" (dark grey font on black background, neat ^^)
I guess they will have a sticker like this in the U.S. for the AT&T variants as well, so that's another good indicator to know "what's in the f***ing box !?!"
The two biggest sellers (regarding Fire Phone) on Ebay (US site of ebay, fer sure) sell the remaining "AT&T UNLOCKED (+ PRIME)".

Forgive me if I missed in this thread... Which versions of the Play Service and Play Store are you referring to?
FWIW, I am running 4.6.4 with Player Services 7.8.99 and Play Store removed. I get "XXX relies on on Google Play services which is not supported on your device" complaints from some apps, but most things continue to work anyway. That is most non-Google apss - Hangouts and YouTube are problematic.

No version in particular. (All versions I were referring to are Fire OS version numbers)
On the GSM unlocked version, I never had trouble with any version of Play Store & Services, so I just used the latest at that time (updates were also without issues).

Well, as long as it's working for you and all your favorite apps keep working properly, you don't need to switch. Livin' on the edge!
Speaking of YouTube, if you like to download videos / audio from there:
SnapTube (Received more updates lately, still beta, supports multiple media sites, can download audio only on YT as well)
NewPipe (Very lightweight, watch or download videos, just released this week, still new & buggy = be gentle ^^)
So If you have an ATT phone there is no way to get the software off the unlocked version on it?
I have the ATT and if I need to I will buy an "factory unlocked for learning rooting and installing mods as It has been a couple of three years since I have done this.
I hope the fire phone mod project succeeds and I think it will be great when the bugs get worked out. I enjoy following this but I bought the unlocked ATT because I needed a new smart phone and for $115 with a year of prime...
Ask me about my warranty service from Amazon!!!!!!!! Horror story but thats another forum!!

Don't worry, there is no "AT&T phone" only an AT&T OS variant.
All Fire Phones are the same, regarding hardware, netlock is no biggie since you already received an unlock code.
You can install the 4.6.3 version on your device, since it is the preferred version when it comes to Google Play Store & services.
Maybe you could explain that process for all of us ATTers? links?
So I don't screw things up...
Hey guys... could you clarify things up a bit so I do things correctly. My case is this:
I've ordered a brand new in box Fire Phone off Ebay that should be arriving in a couple of days, and I know for sure (as it's clearly stated by the seller) that this is the AT&T version. According to the seller they don't open the box, they just provide you the unlock code and you do the whole unlock and activation yourself.
The main reason I ordered this phone is to give it to my kid as his first smartphone but at the same time enjoy the year of Amazon Prime service, since I've been a Prime subscriber for a good 3 years now and I'm up for renewal in November. So essentially my goal is to renew my Prime subscription and give my son a decent Android phone for $35 at the same time.
Based on what I've read I'd be planning initially to keep FireOS to make it stable for him. He also has a Nexus 7 Tablet where he does most of his gaming and school stuff, so I think we can live with FireOS to keep it stable as a phone but still I'd like to install Google Playstore to have access to Google's apps, so I'd guess I'll have to replace the AT&T Rom the Unlocked-GSM FireOS ROM as described by Bingo.
What should be the recommended path for my case?... I don't want to compromise the initial activation so I get the Prime-year with no issues, after that I could play with all the Roms, roots and sideloads that are necessary (and have fun in the process). My concern is that I'd suppose that once I go through the initial activation process for the phone with my Amazon account most probably it will try to update to the latest OS version right?... since these is just a Rom I'd suppose that there should not be issues to let it update and then do the whole safetrap/rooting and sideload the GSM Unlocked Rom?... or should I take a different approach.?
Thanks, George

One week in: My so-so experience. (Any tips, tricks, etc?)

(Sorry in advance for the super long post)
So, I bought an ATT Unlocked 32GB Fire Phone new for only $80 (free shipping) on Ebay and I've been using it for exactly one week now, and my experience has been so-so. I LOVED the fireos UI on the kindle fire tablets but once I started using it on the smaller screen with the fire phone, I found it to be very cluttered, inefficient, and none of my side loaded apps show up in the UI.
So, two days in I hacked play store and 1mobile market onto the phone and downloaded ZenUi launcher from Asus (which works fantastic on Fire Phone), and now I've been liking the general UI experience. But I've been having a few other minor annoyances about this phone, mostly related to things simply not working.
Heres my biggest annoyance: The facebook suite of apps hardly work. This is a problem for me, because my friends and family, all of them communicate over Facebook, and since Facebook thinks its such a FANTASTIC idea to force you to have messenger to read and send messages (no more messaging through the mobile site), I pretty much HAVE to have messenger. My problem though, is that the facebook app crashes alot on Fire Phone, and messenger is doing the same thing. I had to download all of these through play store because the normal Facebook app isn't even on Amazon App Store, and the messenger app is several versions outdated on the store (apparently they abandoned the platform?), So now, I am basically fighting these to apps to work.
Another problem is Play Services. I am not sure whats going on, but no matter what guide I follow (the one here on XDA, the one on spinyourfire and the one on rootjunkies), after a few resets or after just a few days, play services "break" and any and all apps relying on play services (like snapchat, google apps, etc) refuse to work. So when that happens, I have to purge it all relating to Google and redownload. This is REALLY annoying, because Snapchat is another app I use alot for communications and since Play Services keeps doing this, its becoming really difficult.
Tumblr isn't working either. I guess since the browser version works just fine and unlike facebook you aren't required to have their apps, thats not a MAJOR problem. Now, several other communication apps that I HAVE to sideload, like Badoo, OOvoo and some other chat apps aren't working either no matter what I try.
This being a "Communication" device, I am having a very hard time "Communicating" when this is happening. This is really making me upset because I absolutely LOVE the design of the device, the camera is acceptable, I LOVE firefly and the 3D support, and the specs for the price are fantastic. (How many phones have NFC, 3D, good cameras, 32GB ON BOARD space for $80 new?), but with all these problems, I am highly considering sending the phone back to the vendor and buying something else, and I really don't want to! Games run GREAT on here, like GTA Sanandreas, Sims Freeplay, and Fallout Shelter. The camera works great and like I said, I already am in love with Firefly. But I am upset that all the essential apps pretty much need sideloaded since it seems everyone is abandoning Fire Phone, and side loading isn't working.
I should also mention that I did try CM11 and pretty much right away switched back to fireOS because the cameras were not working. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? Thank you!
For me google services works fine, one month of using fire phone and I have dust in back camera. So this is the problem for me, and fire os 5.
Are you on the latest update of fireOS? i only switched to the MIUI ROM recently but for the past couple of months when i was still on fireOS, play store and messenger(from play store) have been working fine with no issues. Also please ensure that if you are using google play to take of automatic updates in the amazon store. From experience apps tend to break if not updated from the original source.
for Facebook try using swipe (just search for it in play store). I'm having problems with messenger myself (no notifications) but with swipe i have no problems.

I tried Swipe and it opens a black screen then closes quickly, sadly.
I'm loving mine after installing Google play and I've downloaded all the apps I want through there and not through Amazon appstore. I'm using Nova Launcher and it's pretty much a nice Android experience now. Not many 4.7" android phones with these great specs I got my 64GB for $100. This thing isn't a budget phone by any means. Snapchat also works just fine. Screen quality reminds me of iPhone 6s.
No issues anymore with fire os 4.6.6.1 and current versions of FB and messenger from play store.

Color Os Sucks

First I thought why people hate on this os, I can deal with it, I love stock android but I have also used miui in the past so color os should be fine, but thinking that was a big mistake.
It doesn't support basic android 9 pie features like swipping right to clear banner notifications, a screen on time chart (leave alone digital wellbeing), dark mode of atleast some sort (all flashy white colours, cannot even take the amoled's advantage) and many more. Even a redmi phone with android 6 or 7 with miui 10 has all android 9 features and here's color os lacking even at the basics.
And even its own features are incompliant. You can only create dual apps for select 2-3 apps, unlike in miui where you could clone any app. Also what is this thing with the call menu when you receive a call, its of 2 kinds, one in which you have to swipe up/down to take/end a call and other being you just have to click the call pick/end button. They need to show their customisation skills there, wow.
And though the phone supports L1 liscence and has a hdr capable display it still doesn't support hdr content on netflix or amazon prime. Their answer to that is an osie vision effect feature in settings>display>osie vision effect, which btw to use you have to also enable smart slidebar(in convinience aid) and then go the supported app>pull out smart slidebar and then enable osie effect. All this then only to see that it says 'not supported in current app'.
Now the main reason for my frustration being not able to download files when the phone is locked. I put anything on download, may it be a video in youtube app or a file in chrome or any download manager app, it downloads only till 1-2 mins after the phone is locked. I come after an hour or so and the download is stuck there. How can one not be frustrated then.
So conclusion is to hell with color os, just waiting for a stable custom rom(pixel experience rom for that matter).

Yeah I know few development for this os in the process. For sot I use actiondash. Substratum works mostly on stock android so no use trying them. And yes about the background downloading I tried locking the apps, turning off battery optimizations for them but didn't try turning off sleep mode, will do. Thanks.

Don't know whether the new stock OS realme OS be improved...
Damn, I was thinking of buying this but didnt know the stock ROM was so bad, is it stable at least? snappy?
Also any odds we get an officially supported custom ROM anytime soon?

I guess so too. Because they don't have much time to deeply modify the OS.
I'm facing a weird issue on my Realme X. After updating an app on Play Store, I don't see "app updated" confirmation on notification panel. I need to open Play store to check if the app is updated or not. My play store version is 17.8.14. All other notification working like when an update is available, when I install a new app etc. Only I don't get notification confirmation after updating an existing app.

Clear data of play store & play services, reboot and let those update itself, then update your apps. Also check for if any specific notification is disabled for play store.

This doesn't help. I know all these workarounds and tried already. I have created a post on Google Community and it seems like most people are facing this bug starting from 17.8.14 update. And after 17.9.17 update, it's even worse. There is no notification from Play Store whatsoever (no notification when an update is available, when an update is completed, when a new app is installed successfully). Google has screwed the notification function on Play Store.

Well can't say. No issues here.

Bringing SM-P600 back to life?

I believe I have the p600. I don't even remember which rom I have installed but I rooted and have TWRP on it from years ago.
It still runs although a bit laggy. I tried to install OneNote on it but the Play store says it's not compatible so I tried downloading an APK and upon opening it says "Parse error - there was a problem while parsing the package [OK]"
So if anyone know's and could save me some time - what would be a good way to update this tablet for use in terms of better ROM and using it with Microsoft OneNote?
Thanks!
Probably the Note is no longer fullfilling certain criteria for OneNote, or never was.
That could mean custom rom, root, unlocked bootloader, missing sensors(though not in this case), or an activated adblocker.
Recently one magazine app became "incompatible" with one or both of my tablets, already installed, but no more updates, and began to "degrade", by displaying new articles as a list of pdfs to download.
I can't remember, but wasn't the whole Office365 originally preinstalled, like on many other devices?
Matches also with MS's demands when it comes to ugrading to Win11: Get yourself new hardware first!
Thanks for the reply. Ended up buying their new Surface Laptop Studio. Loving the pen
