recovering deleted pictures from internal sdcard - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello , is there anyway to recover deleted pictures from internal sdcad after formating system ??? , i tried many apps through google but all failed ,
i desperately need these pictures cuz they contain credit card informations which i must have

You are going to have to put your SD card into the computer and use a recovery program. SD cards don't have a "trash" so you will need to find software to recover it. IMPORTANT!! DO IT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! the more reads and writes to your card, the more likely that the files you are looking for will be purged off. The reason I know its possible is because I just had to do this about 6 months ago. Good luck

internal SD.....not external SD ! zo thats a nice idea but not going to work as its not removable.
as long as you can't mount the internal SD as an USB disk its a no go to run recovery software as 99% of those type of software needs a USB disk to run and NOT MTP type of storage.

I think I saw a hack around XDA that allowed you to mount the memory, or extract the contents, to be able to recover (possibly) data. But it seemed like a lot of hoops to jump through. Plus, data recovery programs will often be only partially successful, under the best of circumstances.
Consider it a lesson learned, and backup your photos next time. With a variety of easy cloud options, there is really no reason not to.

do you have a Nandroid ? why didn't you use the Google drive or Dropbox for backup ?
HTC gives every One owner a Google Drive just for this reason

well you could try
reboot to TWRP recovery to avoid further damage to the partition, make sure /external_sd is mounted
Code:
adb shell dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p47 of=/external_sd/mmcblk0p47_userdata.img
(that should be a raw ext4 partition)
once that's done, take out your external sdcard, and using a card reader, try mounting it in linux then use some recovery program,
you may possibly need to convert it the raw partition, but i'm not sure about all that, just trying to point you in the [possibly] right direction
but in all cases, very low chance of success probably
EDIT: for example, i was able to mount the partition (i made a backup when i first got the phone), just to test using DiskInternals Linux Reader:

Wow that's Great news... Please find out what he used to recover the files . I could really use it.

if you are rooted, there is an app available through the playstore called diskdigger that recovers deleted files from your internal storage

Disk digger works very very well. I have used it a few times to help others out. It's success rate is pretty high.
Just ensure to recover to the external sd card.

I suggest that you try this htc data recovery solution.
Good luck.

Phone based data recovery apps (such as from the Play store) are your best bet.
As you may be referring to (hard to tell with a one line, vague post) PC based programs have been (at least somewhat) successful recovering data from smartphones in the past. But since Android has moved to MTP protocol (versus USB mass storage), most of those programs won't work.
The phone apps will work to some degree, with internal storage. But data recovery is always an iffy proposition. Once the memory blocks get overwritten, the data is gone for good (at least by any reasonable, consumer level retrieval methods).

If you add all that together I should have plenty of space not 168MB free.
Have you rebooted? Do you have any "corpses" (left over game data, etc) in your internal storage? Try running this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1013063 to see if helps remove anything which is taking up space (and doesn't show up in the storage menu) which you don't know about.
Can't even download it says my tablet doesn't have sufficient space to download it from the play store.

You could move something(s) to your external sd card (temporarily), download and install the app, then move it/them back.

Shadowgun's data is located in Android/data/. Apps on the other hand are located in /data/app/ and /system/app/ (leave those where they are). Judging by the free space on your external sd card, Shadowgun's data will not fit. You'll probably have to move some things to your pc (or use a different sd card).

It seems like you're going to have to do a factory reset. I would also recommend flashing this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1589034 since it will give you a bit more internal storage.
Hmm I think I will just wait until the official ICS update, and flash that. Maybe that will fix my problem. Anyways thanks for the help.
I just reset the tablet, and it fixed my problem. Restored everything with Titanium Backup and everything is working well.
/data/gps
Had the same problem, also waited for an update to solve it, but nothing changed. I checked the system directories, which are on the same partition but you have no right to look into them without root (pretty dumb if you ask me). I found a dir /data/gps filled with some useless txt files. Then after deleting them with Ghost Commander nearly 2 GB of free space reappeared.
Sorry it took me so long, not checking xda regularly lately.

Oh My God, I had over 10GB of files in this folder. Went from a little over 100MB free to 10.63GB. I assume this is GPS cache, but it really needs to be capped so that the older stuff gets deleted.

Issue with Titanium Backup

So, I've set the Backup directory to storage/extSdCard/Titanium Backup, but then I noticed that External storage is set to /storage/sdcard0/, so what's the deal with that? :S

That's a feature of jellybean and because of the partitioned internal. Do not worry. As long though as you point it to your 64gb external card as you have done you are OK.

Thanks for the reply mariosraptor....no wonder why the Move to SD feature in the pro version doesn't really work. I tried moving an app it moves it and I see the memory card icon then when I go back it just disappears and is not listed as an app stored in the ext sd.
Yep cause the apps actually are already in the sd. It's about the partions.

Yeah I know...I just thought to try the move apps to external SD card..but then it's useless.
Guess the only way is Directory bind, but then for some reason I can't find the directories for all my apps? Aren't they supposed to be in /Android/Data? I looked in there and only a few apps are there not all of them. What is the path for the apps?

I do not use directore bind. I use a more convenient solution.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2036796
You already hace root. You need a kernel with init.d support.
I have been using this since my S3.
With this I have about 9gigs to install apps in the "real" internal card. All others like game data, and photos and stuff are in my 64gb extcard which now is internal.
Just read the thread by Mattia.

I have tried it and it worked but it caused me more confusion than make things easier and had trouble with the camera and gallery so I removed it. What I hated most about this mod is the reversed partitions when copying things from the pc via MTP
I may give it another try and see how it goes..
I have no problem in camera nor anywhere else.
The first time though after flash that you will open camera and it says it detected a memory card just say NO when it ask if you want to store them there.
Also in browser set phone as where to store downloaded data so you don't end up with this or that file is corrupted.
Hope this help

No, Android/Data will contains only such application which requires to download/store some external data.
All application data stores in hidden data folder, titanium backup is actually backup applications in that folder.
Directory bind useful which have big data like gameloft/navigation map. rest of data is very small and can be created again once you hard reset.

[Q] any advice on fixing sdcard problems?

ive looked over the internet and found no solutions that helped
recent my samsung epic began giving me messages like microsd card unexpectedly removed etc. So i did what i read online and formated it on my pc and its "settings" of course i made a pc backup as well.
well it was all well for only two days and i got messages that now said sd card safe to remove. and the apps on the sd card wouldnt open no more and give a message of app not installed. so i factory reset in settings, format sd card again in settings I tried flashing a new rom, wipe data and dalvik etc ....
but the problem returns shortly after trying these ... on cwm log it shows me "cant format unknown volume /sdcard and /emmc"
now my pc and phone still read my card but it doesnt allow me to save anything or open anything on there such as apps, photos, etc.
now ive seen online suggestions of using odin or more cwm options that i have not tried because im not an expert at all yet. im in highschool so i cant really afford to expeirement myself and rather ask an expert on here.
if i should use odin or other options can someone please tell me how and what to do?
btw i have a 32gb sandisk card and im running cm10 and have never flashed other roms since i rooted first time. and i believe this started happening after i did a restore on one of my nandroid backups and i never wipe before restoring so maybe that might be the root of this conundrum i now face...

Tutorial on using ODIN and getting back to stock
Don't bother with the EL30 tar. Start just below that where the SPH-D700-FC09-8Gb-REL.tar download link is. That is the file which will give you 100% current stock.
EDIT:
After reading your original issue with the SD card...
You should remove the card from the phone.
Connect the card to a computer.
Backup whatever stuff you want to keep.
Format the card. (FAT32)
Move whatever stuff you backed up, back to the card.
Put card back in phone.
In CWM, run Fix Permissions in the advanced menu.
Optional: clear cache partition
Try again with the steps you took where you encountered the write issue to the card.
If you still experience the problem, then try ODIN to test against 100% stock.
If you still experience the problem on 100% stock (FC09), then replace the SD card.
Click to collapse
That was my original reply in the other thread. Since you've formatted already, use the fix permissions option in CWM and try again.
If nothing, then go back to stock and try again. If that doesn't work, then replace the card.
Alright well I'm try this Saturday and post back here to let you know how it went

Have ya tried formating with your phone?
Seen that you tried it once before but when my epic's sd was glitching out simularly unmounting and remounting.
Or partitioning it for installing apps to it?
The other thing that maybe at fault is that when you formated with you computer is that it may have defaulted to a 'quick' format option. I've had nothing but mixed results with quick or fast formating option on windows and linux alike. There should be a check box option or advanced button in the formatting window on windows that gives the option for a full and lengthy format. Note: formatting on either your phone or your computer will sertianly delete the data, so, backup. One other note: when your doing something critical with data storige and such, its a good idea to close all other windows, espechealy the ones that are accessing your file system; such as file brousers and downloading files.
One more thing about restoring a backup on your phone after restoring the restore to a new or different sdcard: it can fail spectacularly if something gets corupted during all that movement and copying, so when you do get a sd card working whether it be new or newly formated it might be a good idea to make a new backup.
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using xda app-developers app
yeah i tried all of that and i used a full format and didnt even restore to it ..
im on stock right now and it seems to randomly unmount but remount by itself when it says scanning media...
im going to root again before the end of tonight bc it sux on stock and ill check to see if the problem persists and im going to try replace the sd card slot too tonight because i have a few epics laying around so i check back in here tommorow afternoon
its not my sdcard for sure bc it works flawlessly on other phones and my phone did it to other sdcards as well.
Best thing you can do imo is to get a new sd card. Unless its the hw on the phone. You could solder up your own I bet, if its new for you it will be aventurous!

well i was sure it was hard ware after the message appear on 100% stock but the good thing i have a few epics sitting around with cracked screens/bricked/other issues so i got replacement parts.
but i fixed the problem !
i opened my epic and took out it sd card slot completly off the motherboard and same to other epic and swapped them.
and it didnt require any soldering since the epic is bada** phone .. very precise placement required though to put the slot back on the motherboard but i matched it after taking my time lol
now im just to going to root and flash and be a happy camper.
thanks very much though guys now im more confident in unrooting my phone and i know how to as well.
it seems the problem is gonnne.
crappppp the problem returned but now it fixes itself right after but this can trick some of the apps.
like apollo .
i have a few songs on there and unless i pop out and reinsert the sdcard or reboot it Apollo will think i dont have those songs ...which sux bc i use it frequently but yeah im just try swapping the sdcard slots again .

No MicroSD card Encrypton... only Samsung has it?

I have both phones, Z Play and Galaxy A7 2017, Z Play is the one I like more because of audio, response (not lag at all compared with the A7), etc, only the camera in A7 is better than Z Play but something is impeding me to use as a daily driver: external SDCARD Encryption, how can it be possible?... I have EX. SDCARD Enc enable option in my A7 and there is no performance impact, why Lenovo didn't do that too?... is it dependent to a chip or something like that? unbelievable to be honest.
Try to format it on device and see if you get asked if you want it to be formatted for media or for apps. Choose the latter one
Encryption is good way to lose your data if something happens to your device or perform factory reset.
Maybe Android solved that issue? Login to Google acc will gain access to encrypted sd card in another device?

Thanks for your reply, in the screenshot of my A7 I have the option to encrypt or decrypt my SD with a simple click maintaining your data (the microSD is not formated), never lost information and of course, before you change the phone you should decrypt the data otherwise you will loose it.
This function is excellent because if someone stole your phone, your pictures or whatever you have in your phone will be protected, I really like the moto phone, but with this functionality is impossible, last year I got my phone stolen from the metro, so this stuff happens.

Well this is a Samsung only feature. Android can encrypt SD cards since 6.0, but that's only if you format it for storing apps. You most likely won't be able as your normal SD card. If you want to take it to another device you'll have to format it. I'm theory it's possible to take the key from your old phone and implement it into your new one so you could just keep on using it, but that's just theory and would be quite difficult.

Because they chose to use stock Android with little to no modifications. Samsung on the other hand cripples down Android to something unuseable. Using their encryption methods will kill off all possibilities of nothing modifying since TWRP can't handle them. I don't know if they finally switched to the standard methods but at least it was so on my Note 4.
So the only two options you have is to stick to that Samsung garbage or just get an app that can create encrypted folders. That way not the whole SD card will be encrypted but everything you want to

That is why I like a lot Moto, for example I have enabled the pattern lock at boot, it means that even to access TWRP you need to pattern unlock, at this point I can put all the important files in the internal memory. Is this safe in this way?... it will be not encrypted but there wont be a possibility to access the file system, am I correct?
I tried EDS and the file write speed is about 2MB/s, without encryption, the internal memory speed is 50MB/s and the external is 20MB/s...

They are encrypted. The whole /data partition is encrypted. The internal storage (that part you can access even without root) lives under /data/media/0. Other mountpoints like /sdcard in TWRP is just how it's made accessible, try are only links. That's why you can't just format or change file system of /data in TWRP. If you "wipe" it it'll tell you it deletes everything but /data/media. So if you have bootup security enabled it's impossible as far as I know to get to those files. Sure, someone would be able to flash custom ROMs through fastboot but I doubt it's possible to make one that can give you access without password. And the key is stored inside a SoC in a digital part that can't just be written and can't be read from outside.
Booting into fastboot and flashing different recovery will probably get rid of your pattern protection.

I don't believe it could be very easy to do, take a look at the screenshot I did when booting the phone, there is a block that needs to be decrypted and I think that block is encrypted independently of the recovery you have... that is only my speculation...

No. The only pattern protection that can be circumvented is the one on the lockscreen. Circumventing the one for bootup protection is impossible for all I know.

Ok, good to know. Thx.
Why would you want to encrypt SD card? If it gets corrupted for any reason and the only way to view info is from a PC (since Android won't mount it) then your data is toast...

If you lose your phone or someone steal it, how do you protect the info? Is it supposed that the info in the card is backuped, so if there is corruption on SD (never happened in my A7) shouldn't be a problem.
a) I use my phones such that if anything on the phone is put up on a billboard, I won't care. Course some days I flash 5 different ROMs... :|
b) you might try Lenovo's forums and see if you get any ideas there...

c) maybe a googleplaystore app that would do what you need?

Video got corrupted and suddenly deleted while transferring

I was taking a video of a full concert which was around 40 mins and everything playback perfectly fine.
I attempted to transfer the video into my computer but it couldn't get through since I don't have enough storage in my computer. I deleted a few files to make some space for this video, then I copied and wait. Not long after, I tried to go back to my phone and it said something about the video being corrupted, then it suddenly deleted by itself. I was so shocked when it happened, thinking it was some kind of glitch, but the video really got deleted and there's absolutely not trace of it. I thought maybe the video got transferred to the computer, but there was nothing as well. The video just completely disappeared! I tried to recover it using fonelab but without root it couldn't do the "deep scan" but if I really have to root my brand new phone then I will. I'm really pissed because it was a really long video and something special to me and I can't believe it just disappeared like that... What actually happened and how can I fix it?
There could be several things. If the video was on the phone's sd card then it's possible it was caused by the sd card. If you were moving instead of copying the video it could have corrupted during the move. You talk like the video was on the phone but if you do have a card inserted are you sure it's not on the card?

It seems like the video was originally saved to my sd card actually. I remember just dragging the videos to a folder in my computer, and I'm pretty sure that means "copy" not "move/cut" because it's from an external drive. Do you know any ways of how I can recover it?

On your PC look here
C:\Users\YOUR USERNAME\AppData\Local\Temp
When copying from external > PC it actually copies there first, then copies from there to wherever you asked it to save to
Slight chance it is still in there, it might not be named the same or have the .mp4 extension, so look for a file dated the same time / date you copied it / recorded it, and same size, then copy to desktop or somewhere and rename to .mp4
(Make sure show file name extensions is enabled to see the .mp4 extension)
If it's not there, run a data recovery software on your MicroSD on a PC

You can try installing something like EaseUS on your PC and see if it will recover anything on the SD card.

Damn I looked over in that folder and I can't find anything about it. Does it matter if I've shutdown my computer because I thought the clipboard gets deleted or something?

How does it scan my sd card in my phone? It seems like it only lets me scan my internal computer storage not any external drive like my phone...
Also, something interesting I found while going through he folder that had the video, is that there's a 0 byte file name temp_video but it was created 2 days after this incident happened... I don't actually think this is it because there were actual 2 video files and 4 pictures that got "corrupted and deleted" when I did it.

That is a temp folder it won't get deleted when you shutdown like clipboard does, I think it's every 30 days or something when it auto deletes stuff from there, so if it's not in there it might not have ever copied to the PC in the first place

If it originally saved to the MicroSD card (external sd) in the phone, put it in a card reader and connect to PC, if it was saved directly to the phone internal storage you might need a mobile data recovery software if EaseUS Windows version doesn't see it
Try this
https://www.easeus.com/android-data-recovery-software/free-android-data-recovery.html
Did you ever play the video back successfully on the phone? Completely from start to end?
You might have to accept that it never recorded properly in the first place unfortunately, and if that is the case, no data recovery will help as there was no video to recover

seems like I have to root my phone for the app to work? what's the most simple way to root it? and once I root, can I unroot it again so I don't void my warranty?
I didn't play back the video from start to finish since it was around 40 mins in total long but I did play parts of it and skipped some and I have no doubt the phone actually recorded and saved it... I just don't know why it suddenly disappeared when I was trying to copy it.
I'm really scarred of this happening again... What should I do to prevent it? I've already changed the recording so that it records to my device storage and not the micro sd.

If it recorded to the MicroSD why do you want to root your phone?
Put the SD into a card reader on the PC and run the recovery scan from there
And no you cannot unroot to avoid warranty issues, once rooted warranty is void forever

video got corrupted
Hello, it seems that the insufficient capacity cauesed your dada coruppted and deleted, I think you should stop the process to avoid data overwritten and the download a recovery tool. YOu can try some freeware, I have used the Bitwar data recovery to recover my files, this tool is free and easy to use, you can reover your files with three simple steps.
Hope it can help you.
