functions root after restarting - Desire 816 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I have the rom European stock "root" I have used several applications to edit the build.prop and delete some files from /system/app and /system/priv-app, with is file explorer give the root permissions, I delete apps and I modify the build.prop and goes well but when I restart the terminal, applications are back in /system/app and build.prop is as if she had not changed. Any idea what it might be?

Your device, although rooted, still has protection against writing to /system.
Flash the file from THIS thread, then repeat what you did, and the changes will stay this time.

thank you very much, worked very well

[Q] Removed htclockscreen, how to reinstall?

So I removed the htclockscreen.apk with titanium backup, but for some reason TB didn't backup the app its self, only the apps data... so I can't just restore it with TB. However I sent the file to my email so that I would have a back up copy in case something dumb happened like this. So my question is how do I reinstall the htclockscreen.apk back on to my phone?
Since you have the original apk still, you can use root explorer (on the phone itself) or adb.
With root explorer, just copy/cut the apk, navigate to /system/app/ make sure to press the Mount as R/W button and then paste the apk and reboot.
Using adb, do:
adb remount
adb push htclockscreen.apk /system/app
adb reboot
So i bought Root Explorer, copied the HtcLockScreen.apk file over into the system/app directory pressed the r/w button and pasted it. Rebooted my device and its still the vanillia Lockscreen. When i try to install the HtcLockScreen.apk it says that Application not installed. Even though it looks like it was going to install. After the reboot i went in and checked to see if it was still in the system/app folder and it was. Im a little confused on what im doing wrong or why its not working. The HtcLockScreen.apk file is 797K big, at least the one that i sent to my self in an email as a backup. Can anyone confirm that this is the correct one based on the size of the file.
I actually solved the issue. I had to grab the corresponding .odex file and put that into the folder as well and then i rebooted and BAM, it works again.

Root/ superuser/ managing system

Hi,
i have Rooted my desire using standard unrevoked 321,
confirmed working in adbshell.
Installed superuser and Root explorer
Granted Root explorer rights in superuser
Went in to the root explorer.
Went to my desired location to delete in this case ringtone files to clear valuable space. System/media/ blabla
enabled r/w and deleted the files i wanted.
Now i come to the point that when i either press back and disable r/w or just exit the explorer in all my desire resets and the ringtones are back in place.
It seems that i dont get full control even though i have this confirmed using the Su and id command in sdb shell
Any clearafication would be much apreciated.

You need to have S-OFF in order to delete those files that come with the phone.
Check this http://alpharev.shadowchild.nl/ and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=794314
Once you do this it should not be a problem at all to perform what you want to.
And the alpharev method is reliable and fast
clearing files in any /system/ directory wont give you any space anyway!!! only files in the /data/ directories will
You might also like to try cache for root users. It deletes all cache files
Thans for that. Im going to tinker around with these options

Replacing 'SYSTEM' APK

I want to know how I can replace a system apk with a modified version.
I have been unsuccessful by using such tools as 'Root Explorer' where I moved my modified APK to /root/system/app and when I replaced it with 'r/w' permissions all it seem to have done is deleted the original version.
I must not that I am on a DT-A2SD ROM, and figured it has something to do with that, so I placed the apk in /sd-ext directory but as the file names are different such as 'com...' it didn't make any difference.
Many thanks.
You have to be S-OFF to replace a system file while booted.
You can still replace it via the adb method while you are booted into recovery.
Ah, Okay....Could you provide me a guide to replacing system APK using APK preferably. Thank you.

[Q] unable to edit build.prop

Hi,
I have a rooted Desire with sandvold's ics 4.03 rom. Wanted to make some changes to build.prop but nothing I tried so far works... I tried Mount R/W app, Root explorer, adb, adb over wifi, ES explorer, tried to mount via clockwork... with ES explorer I managed to edit the file and make it save (what the program tells me) but when I browse back to the system folder the build.prop file is gone ?? I reboot the phone and build.prop is back but not with the changes I made to it ... it gets reset to default every time ...
Does anyone have any ideas how I can change the file ?
THx

I've truer to change build prop many a time with root explorer and it just reverts back to same after you reboot.....I've set to re changed file saved change set to ro rebooted had file remained the same.
I just use my mobile and this is how I successfully edited build prop
If you have ota files like miui Xj. Unzip the update file edit build prop....save changes....rezip and flash in recovery or you can edit the rom zip.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA Premium App
Well,if you constantly fail to successfully edit it on phone, you can edit it on computer if its not problem for you to flash ROM again. So when you have unpacked it use text editor(notepad,notepad++,gedit,sublimetext2....) and just edit build-prop,when you are done click save and repack it again.

[Q] Editing /system/etc/hosts file - restores itself after reboot

Hi
So I am looking at blocking a number of websites - no, I don't really want to do this through app's as a mere uninstall can undo the blocks.
I've rooted my phone, I've given +rw mount to /system/ and I'm able to etc hosts under /system/etc/hosts just fine.
However, as soon as I reboot, the system restores the hosts file to it's original state and all my edits to that file are undone.
Is there anything I can do about this? Please be a bit more specific than just "flash the kernel", thanks.

any time i edit anything in system folders i copy it to sdcard do my edits then copy it back and make sure the permissions are set correct i think it rw-r--r-- reboot and it should be good to go... for some reason i cant edit them in that folder but moving it to edit then move it back works for me maybe it will work for you too...

I can edit it no probs. I do my changes, test them out and they all work OK.
As soon as I reboot, everything becomes undone. AFAIK this might be some kernel protection.
The system partition is write-protected.
