[Q] APN not listed and cannot add - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

I was on CM 10.2.1
I upgraded to CM11 - I get no wireless data. My phone works but I have no APNs and I could not add them.
I tried SlimKat 9.0 same issue with the APN
I upgraded my CWM to 6.4.0.7 as I heard that caused issues when upgrading to CM11.
I bought Mobile Odin and flashed that way as I thought it might help.
Ive done the following to fix my APN
1) Loaded an old one from working CM 10.2.1
2) Run Root Tweak with the fix APN for CM11 checked
3) Done the airplane mode trick
4) Attempt to add one manually
Does anyone know why this is happening and more importantly how to correct this issue?
Yes I did pore through other threads on how to fix this but no avail.
Thank you

What is your bootloader and modem? Do you get data if you re-install your previous ROM?

Bootloader = I747UCDLK3
Modem = I747UCDLK3
Yes I get data when I load a backup of CM 10.2.1
Thanks

Data does not work on ROMs beyond cm10.2 because your bootloader and modem to too old.
I recommend flashing back to stock 4.1.1, sim unlock your phone if it is not already sim unlocked, and run OTA updates to at least 4.3, then install recovery and CM11.

Thanks for the quick reply. That sounds hard. From what I'm reading going back is treacherous.
So these are the steps.
1. Load this firmware via ODIN -> I747UCDLK3_I747ATTDLK3_I747UCDLK3_HOME.zip -- What about gapps? Is that in this zip?
2. Run triangle away. (Do I need to do this?)
3. Contact my carrier to unlock my sim. (If this is carrier unlocking ie taking my att phone to Sprint etc, why is this needed?)
4. Get OTA updates. Will this come automagically because I'm on 4.1.1 and does it matter if my flash counter is gt 1?
5. Root phone via Odin with this file CF-Auto-Root-d2att-d2uc-samsungsghi747.tar.md5.
6. Install CWM if it went away when I went back to firmware - Of course it would because I'll factory reset my phone in step 1.
7. Flash away to a 4.4.4 Rom
Did I miss anything?
Step 4 is the one that scares me -- That one is out of my control. Either I get the OTA or I dont. Anyway I can "request" the OTA?
Thanks again
Be Well

From your custom ROM, run triangle away to reset counter and change things back to official.
Now flash back to stock 4.1.1 using Odin. If your phone does not boot, you need to get into recovery, do a factory reset, and reboot the phone and go through the set up routine.
After loading stock 4.1.1, do this to sim unlock your phone for free: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2529200. If you have a code from ATT, you must be running a stock ROM or a custom ROM that is based on a stock Samsung ROM in order to enter the unlock code.
You must be on a stock ROM in order to take OTA updates. OTA updates are the safest way to obtain an updated bootloader and modem.
After updating to 4.3, you cannot downgrade the bootloader as doing so may brick the phone.
The choice is yours in terms of what you want to do. As you found out, some ROMs will not function properly without an updated bootloader and modem. Mixing modem and bootloader versions may also result in a bricked phone.

To stick with 10.2 or not to that is the question. Everytime I flash or do anything like this on my phone - I get a small lump in my throat knowing I'm dancing in the razors edge of bricking it.

I know how you feel, but I've done it enough times and just accept the fact that I may brick the phone. Jtag service would cost me around $75 so I'm willing to take the chance. I'd be less willing if the phone still has warranty.
Flashing back to stock and running OTA updates is the safest route.
If you don't sim unlock while on stock 4.1.1 and you want to sim unlock your phone in the future, you will need to be on a stock or virtually stock ROM in order to enter the unlock code.

Used ODIN to go back to stock 4.1.1.
Got the OTA update to 4.3
I have my MMS and cellular data back
I'll stick on stock, unrooted 4.3 for a minute.
I should be available to root and update to CM11 or SlimKat or any 4.4 rom whenever I so desire and still keep cellular data.
My baseband is I747UCUEMJB. How can I find out my bootloader and modem versions on UNROOTED device?
Your help is much appreciated and your instructions were flawless.

In a terminal or adb shell you can enter this to check your bootloader:
Code:
getprop ro.bootloader
In a terminal or adb shell you can enter this to check your modem (should match the baseband your phone reports in About):
Code:
getprop gsm.version.baseband
I don't believe either of these commands require root unless stock has getprop locked down tighter that AOSP ROMs; I just entered them in a user shell.
There are a couple of firmware updates for your device beyond MJB, NE4 and NJ1. Some users, myself included, had GPS problems that were a bit of a pain to fix on newer 4.4 AOSP based ROMs with the MJB firmware, but data was ok with MJB. Also, you'll need newer firmware if you decide to test drive the lollipop alphas that are floating around. There are custom recovery flashable firmware updates on XDA from a trusted developer if you decide you need that, or you might want to take a couple more OTAs if you're more comfortable going that route. You're already on MJB so there's no going back

The terminal worked
Bootloader and baseband = I747UCUEMJB
What???? I might need more updates for all the roms out there.....ugggh.
"There are custom recovery flashable firmware updates on XDA from a trusted developer if you decide you need that, or you might want to take a couple more OTAs if you're more comfortable going that route."
If I decide to use these flashable firmware updates on XDA from a trusted developer or OTA its same as this: going forward and NEVER going backward when getting firmware updates?, yes?

yes. downgrading bootloader will almost certainly cause a brick.

You guys are on point.
Last night I received another OTA to 4.4.2.
Baseband now at NE4.
Thanks again for taking the time to answer all this -- Really really appreciate it.
EDIT: Can I still use this to root my phone via ODIN or is there a different process for this baseband?
CF-Auto-Root-d2att-d2uc-samsungsghi747.tar.md5
I load this into ODIN, plug my phone in download mode and root away. Does either the file I use change or do I have to use something other than ODIN?
Thanks again

To get root, I would flash a custom recovery and flash supersu from recovery, then let supersu disable know.
The file you named looks to be outdated as it refers to the s3 as d2att. Since unified builds were released, the s3 is now referred to as the d2lte.

I have ROM Manager installed. It has an option to "Flash Clockworkmod Recovery". I just tried it and it failed and I think thats because I dont have root. In the past I've had to root my phone via ODIN, then flash custom recovery then MOD away.
In the past I rooted the S3 via ODIN. With this new 4.4.2 version do I still root via ODIN provide I find the correct file because -> CF-Auto-Root-d2att-d2uc-samsungsghi747.tar.md5 this one is probably for a 4.1.1 version phone?

I would not flash anything for the d2att at this point.
Try this:
Download the latest tar.md5 file from here: https://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_...Edition/d2lte/
Download supersu zip from here and place it onto an external SD card or copy it to the phone's internal storage: http://download.chainfire.eu/695/SuperSU/
In Odin, uncheck everything except f.reset time. Flash Philz. When you see reset in the status window, remove USB cable, pull battery, replace battery, boot into recovery, flash supersu, reboot.

I am fairly certain that AOSP, or at least CM, de-unified in the past few months. Not that it matters much, other than for the confusion it causes.

[Q] Official 4.3 Upgrade Issues

I was on stock, un-rooted firmware version MD5. Went ahead with the official 4.3 upgrade through KIES. Don't like it, want to go back to stock MD5. Trying to ODIN back with official FW file (not the first time I've used this) and when I start, it fails and what is weird is that it appears the bootloader is changed as well from the 4.3 update. It has 2 new lines in the upper left corner (Warranty Bit: 0 and BOOTLOADER RP SWREV: 1) Now, once the ODIN failed, another line, in all red letters on the download screen underneath those previous mentioned lines, states
SW REV CHECK FAIL : Fused 1 > Binary 0. Any ideas? Phone works 100% on this new 4.3 from TMO, just cant seem to ODIN back to 4.1.2. Any help would be super. Thanks!

Is not possible for right now, until devs will create a new root app or something like superSU or I don't know ! :crying: Same to me ...
Your Boot loader is probably secured.
Try Root66 image and get back to UVDMD5 Rooted. From there, use Doc Holiday's thread to get 4.3 upgrade.
As it stands, right now if you flashed the official firmware or OTA, you will not be able to Odin flash any previous firmware. Maybe if you were never rooted....
For now though, you shoukd still be able to flash cwm/twrp and flash another rom. you will be limited to the 4.3 modem, but otherwise should be ok to run a 4.1.2 rom.
We are working on it.

Same red letters and can't get it back,

Any Help Please !!
This is why everyone should try to search for information on anything and everything before flashing it to your device. Even if its an official update.
As stated many, many times, once you flash the 4.3 update, you cannot flash older firmware again. Roms are ok, older firmware can brick you. Your weird folder is androids implementation of user profiles if I understand it right. May as well get used to it now, I don't think its going away.
And for those interested, the root66 firmware works fine now as far as I can tell.
If you experience instability, you need to factory reset.

You can try first wiping just dalvik and cache, then try factory reset.

Thank you Doc , It has been said ..Over and over and over.. OTA 4.3 update means you cannot flash older firmware again! I was one of the lucky that waited and installed you ROM and it has been stable . I placed a few Mods like Apps For 4.3 TW
For those just refused to READ and have NOT done a OTA update to 4.3 Like DocHoliday77 and and many have said .. here goes one more time..
WARNING!!!
If you have NOT updated via the official firmware or OTA update, it is highly recommended that you do NOT do so at this time!
You can still run these roms and gain every advantage, with none of the problems!
There so many other 4.3 ROMs to play with DocHolidays, Sarahai, mrRobinson and now aamir123. . YOu just to READ before run in head first into the OTA.
I have been trying to keep up with all the 4.3 update stuff but its just so hard with 15 different threads and it being updated everyday. I stupidly updated OTA 4.3 before coming on here and reading and it blows! Samsung is stupid for releasing such a unpolished update. But besides the point, I have been having a problem with out going calls, and battery life. When I will press to call someone the call ends instantly and I have to restart phone for it to allow me to call out. Has anyone else had this problem?
Also, are we any closer to getting 4.3 rooted? I know developers are having problems with Knox etc? If not is there anything I can do to make this update better or do I just have to suck it up? Thanks for the help guys.
I alrdy talked to people at samsung and complained beyond belief, but I dont think the out sourced help desk person understood me.
I made it !!
How ?
1. Uninstall KNOX with Titanium.
2. Flash CWM twice (first one failed), Now I have CWM.
3. Download T999UVDMD5 (Deodexed)
4. Flash it via CWM.
5. Voilà !!
Now It has the partition as it comes from Factory !.
It's there a version similar to this one, running on Android 4.3 (Stock Deodexed, Without KNOX) ?

So I have a question Doc, I know I posted about this in the CM11 unofficial thread as well, but I am running your Non-Knox, CiQ free version and I have CWM installed, and I'm perfectly rooted after I updated SuperSU from the Play Store, but when I try to CWM Flash a rom it throws an error about the ro.bootloader and it lists out all the older bootloaders. So what I guess I'm getting to is what would it take to use the new bootloaders with any of the ROMs?

If you have updated to official 4.3 by any means then don't try to downgrade your boot loader and rom as it may brick device
If you have not taken official update then it depends what is your current boot loader and what rom you are trying to flash
So if you are sure that you haven't gone for official update then you flash dmd5 firmware then try to flash rom
Be sure before doing anything

reverting to 4.1.1

i have the s3 att on a 4.4.4 CROM. the baseband says ...LK3. can i use any guide using odin to go back to 4.1.1 stock unrooted and then use OTA updates to get the latest baseband/bootloader/modem? just want to make sure before i do it. i hear this is the safest way and i want to make sure i have met the requirements before i do it so i dont end up having a brick! (not sure if it matters but i have never used OTA updates before)
thanks in advance.
Is your bootloader also the lk3? If the modem and bootloader are lk3, you can use Odin to flash back to stock using firmware from sammobile.com.
Ok, I'm on a similar boat. I tried several AOSP based ROMs, and while I like most of them a lot more than stock touchwiz, they all present the same problems:
- Camera stops working sometimes and I have to reboot device;
- Camera won't record videos in 1080p, even when it's selected in the settings;
- Cannot make video calls on Skype longer than 5 seconds before the call drops;
- Disconnecting a bluetooth media device while music is streaming causes sounds to stop working;
- Tap to pay doesn't work at all;
So because of these problems, I want to go back to stock . My phone is the AT&T version. Currently I'm running Carbon Rom with KitKat 444. The baseband version is I747UCUFNJ1. The latest version of the stock ROM available on sammobile is:
Version: Android 4.1.1
PDA: I747UCDLK3
CSC: I747ATTDLK3
MODEM: I747UCDLK3
Would I be able to revert my phone back to stock with Odin? If not, what would I have to do to revert? Am I stuck with custom ROMs?
I'm pretty new to this so I'd appreciate anybody's help.
If your bootloader and modem is the lk3, you should be able to Odin back to stock 4.1.1.
Ok, how do I find out if they are? And if they are not, do I have any other options?

I have tried CM11 and Carbon ROM, which is CM based, both have all the same problems. I haven't tried TW-based ROMS. Do you have any suggestions?
What do you mean by the phone shuts down? Did you try copying the ROM to a microSD card?
Did you notice any bootloader or modem files in the S3Rx 4.0 (11-9-14) ROM? It may not include a modem or bootloader. In step 1 of the flash process, it says "AT&T I747 users should update bootloaders and modem to NE4 http://forum.xda-developers.com/gala...pdate-t2808654 I747M and T999 users need to be on 4.3 firmware or ROM will not boot. the link i posted is TW. post #1306 claims is o.k. to flash with UFNJ1.
did not see any mention of bootloader or modem in changelog or in list of 'extra' features.

I reboot the phone in ClockWorkMod recovery. Then I go to the command prompt and type:
Code:
adb push S3Rx_UCUFNE4_AROMA_11-9-14.zip /sdcard/
It starts pushing the file to the phone, but after a while, the phone screen goes black, and I get a "Protocol failure" on the command prompt. After this the power button no longer works, I have to do a battery pull for the phone to work again. The phone has 10 GB of storage left so it didn't run out of space. The USB chord is brand new so I don't think it's that either. It worked fine before when I pushed other smaller roms.
In another question, would this process allow me to downgrade the modem and restore stock rom?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1831898
i am pretty sure that since youre on MJ1 , your bootloader and modem have to match.

Did you try flashing the card from an external microSD card?
AT&T never released a stock ROM for the i747 beyond 4.1.1 afaik; therefore, you cannot get back to stock unless you flash an OTA ROM that has been compiled for flashing in Odin.
I do not recommend mixing and matching bootloaders and modems as a mismatch may result in a hard brick.
Downgrading only the modem will not allow you to flash back to stock.

Once you upgrade to the 4.3 or newer bootloader on the i747, you are stuck with either custom ROMs or OTA ROMs that have been compiled for flashing in Odin or CWM/TWRP.
You can try flashing the NE4 ROM because it doesn't appear to include a bootloader or modem. The first post says "Prerequisites include a minimum of a 4.3 bootloader and modem.
If you are not on the official 4.4.2 bootloaders and modem then you will need to flash ktoonsez kernel."
Thanks audit13 and mrrocketdog for all the help. I was able to get the AROMA rom installed on the phone. All functionalities lost with AOSP ROMs are back working so that's a plus. Still can't get updates OTA updates but this phone is probably not gonna have any new ones. Still hopeful that lolipop based AOSP ROMs fix the problems I had, but I'm not holding my breath.

[Q] sgh-i747 original updates

Hi all, I have an SGH-i747 with ver 4.0.4 which has been rooted. I will like to update my version systematically with the original updates i believe there where from 4.0.4 to 4.1.1 then 4.1.2. then 4.3, 4.4.2 etcc.. its there a place where i can find the original ups, my phone will not take the original firmware updates on its own. Reason is once i try to flash any ROM pass 4.1.1 i loose the Mobile Data getting the no sim inserted msg and no signal, forcing me to go back the original state in order to work. seems there is a problem with the modem once i go pass 4.1.1. .. thank you.
What bootloader version is on the phone? Where did you get the firmware to flash? You're using desktop Odin to flash?
Are ota updates an option for you? If they are you can unroot and flash the stock recovery; it might be easiest just to Odin back to stock.
Otherwise enewman has posted firmware updates to xda. They are bootloader + modem zips you can flash in custom recovery. You have to flash them incrementally, mjb then ne4 then nj1. Search the forum here and you'll find them. Just be careful and read read read those threads. Messing with bootloaders is the best way to hard brick this phone.
I'm in a similar situation - I've been on a custom version of the Stock ROM for 4.1.2 - never bothered to update the bootloader because I had the soft unlock done, didn't want to lose it. Now I'm bored with it. I'd love to get up to 4.4, or even a 5.0 ROM... but not sure the steps needed to do so. I'm vaguely aware that I have to update the bootloader/kernel, etc... but it seems like I'm 4 years behind the curve with all the ROMs and threads about bootloaders, and I've lost my touch.
That thread with the list of bootloaders sounds good though, I'll go looking for it to start I guess.

Thanks! I'll give it a look, down a couple of shots of liquid courage, and give it a go this weekend.
EDIT: Yikes, didn't take long for that to fizzle out. I'm using a i747M. Noticed that my current baseband version isn't listed anywhere on that thread. Hmmm. Oh well, guess I'll do some more digging later...
With an i747m, you can flash the latest 4.4.2 using firmware from sammobile.com and desktop Odin.
Do I need to do them in sequence, or can I jump to the latest? I'm assuming once I've flashed the stock firmware, I can load any current custom ROM?
@gfinockio, is your phone sim unlocked? If not and you don't see any mention of the warranty bit in download mode, you could flash back to stock 4.1.1, use the free method to sim unlock, and then run OTA updates until you are running the latest ROM. OTA updates are the safest route to upgrade the phone.
If you phone is sim unlocked already, you could flash directly to the latest ROM; however, you will not be able to downgrade the bootloader as any attempts to downgrade the bootloader could hard brick you phone.

I used the "free unlock" in 4.1.2 (so it's unlocked) but I thought when you upgraded the bootloader you lost that lock. Now that I believe that isn't the case (and I've used a different tool to unlock as well), I may just try the OTA updates. I was with MTS (Manitoba), but now I'm with Rogers, so I guess I would just use the Rogers OTA images to upgrade from 4.1.2 to 4.4? Do I use Odin or whatever to do that? Once I upgrade to a "stock" image, won't the updater just prompt me to upgrade again and again until I'm "up to date"?
Unlocking the phone via code or the free method is permanent even after upgrading the ROM, bootloader, and modem.
The carrier ROMs for the i747m are pretty much identical but I always recommend sticking with the original carrier's ROM. If you download the stock image from sammobile.com, use Odin to flash the ROM.
OTA updates will not work with a rooted stock ROM too.
When i search for the stock firmware on sammobile for the i747m, it doesn't have any listings. Are you able to find it on there? I don't see it.
Search for the sgh-i747m.

Downgrading from Android 5.1.1 to Android 4.1

I have Pac Rom Android 5.1.1 installed on my rooted sg3 and I need to do a carrier unlock. I contacted ATT to get the unlock code and the code they provided didn't work. Now I want to downgrade to Android 4.1 and try the UMTS menu trick as described here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2176719
I have tried Odin many times (with many versions, different computers, USB cables, etc) and every time Odin fails to flash Android 4.1. with a Fail AUTH error. I have used Odin successfully in the past many times with this phone but am unable to get it to work this time around.
Does anyone know how to downgrade the sg3 from 5.1.1 to 4.1? Or even better does anyone how to carrier unlock the sg3 when it has 5.1.1 installed on it?
Thanks!
Odin is probably failing because you have a 4.3 or 4.4.2 bootloader on your phone. I recommend you not flash anymore ROMs using Odin as repeat attempts to flash the 4.1.1 ROM via Odin may hard brick the phone.
Once a phone is running and 4.3 or 4.4.2 bootloader, you cannot use the free/hidden menu method to unlock the phone.
You cannot use a custom ROM to enter an unlock code. You'll have to go back to a stock ROM, enter the code, and return to a custom ROM.
Thanks for the reply. Do you know how I can go back to stock 4.1.1 without using Odin?
You need the 4.1.1 bootloader in order to use the free method. Once a phone is on 4.3 bootloader or higher, you can't go back to 4.1.1. Don't try because attempts to do so could brick the phone.
A stock 4.1.1 rom on a 4.3 bootloader will not work.
So you're saying once the sg3 is on a version above 4.3 there is no way to go back to 4.1.1?

Once it is on the 4.3 or higher bootloader, there is no going back to an older bootloader and it is the older 4.1.1 bootloader and stock 4.1.1 ROM that is required to unlock using the free method.
Since you have the code, you can flash a stock ROM from recovery.

Thanks. What do you mean by free method?
Also you suggesting if I put the 4.1.1 stock rom .zip on my sg3 I can flash it via CWM just like I would the latest 5.1.1 Pac Rom release?
The free method is the method you linked in your original post. This is the only free method available and it requires a 4.1.1 bootloader that your phone doesn't have. Installing 4.1.1 via cwm is not going to help you unlock it.
Since you have the code, you can flash a stock ROM from recovery.

How would I do this? Do I just flash 4.1.1 from cwm?
Flashing 4.1.1 onto your phone will not allow you to enter the code.
Before flashing anything, you need to verify the bootloader that is running on your phone. Until you do that, I would not flash any bootloaders or modems. An incompatible modem/bootloader combination can also brick your phone.
Sorry, one last question.
You'll have to go back to a stock ROM, enter the code, and return to a custom ROM.

You can flash a stock rom from the general thread using twrp or cwm.
Awesome, thanks again. I was worried about going that route since I'm on 5.1.1 but I'll give it a shot

When you pick a stock ROM, make sure you pick one with the same bootloader and modem that are currently on your device. You probably have either the NE4 or NJ1 bootloader and modem pair. You DO NOT have a 5.1.1 bootloader and modem, they do not exist for the SGS3. Check your versions from a Terminal Emulator app or check them with the Phone Info - Samsung - app from the PlayStore.
Both NE4 and NJ1 stock ROMs are available in the forum. enewman17 posted them form image dumps, they have been used successfully by many.
The Terminal Emulator commands are:
Code:
getprop ro.bootloader
getprop | grep version.baseband
Thanks, I did this and both the bootloader and modem ended with NJ1 so I downloaded UCUFNJ1_Rooted.zip from enewman17's thread using CWM 6.0.4. The flash was successful but now the phone is frozen at the AT&T logo when I turn it on.
Any thoughts as to why its stuck booting up?

More than once I have seen reports of this happening when going from a 5.x.x ROM back to 4.4.x. The most common solution has been to include formating the internal sdcard before flashing the stock ROM.
If I flash the sd card as well I will lose the UCUFNJ1_Rooted.zip file. So in that case should I use adb via CWM to flash it?

Put the zip file on the external sdcard and then flash it with your recovery.
I actually didn't have an external SD card. I wound up taking it to the ATT store that had an ATT repair shop inside it and they reset it back to stock 4.4 for me and now everything works great! After unlocking the carrier on the phone I did have to manually enter the t-mobile APN to get the data connection working but that was simple (the info is listed on t-mobile's site)

I747 doesnt reconigze the sim card after install custom rom

good afternoon, I have a Galaxy S3 SGH-I747 Model using ClockworkMod install the [ROM] [4.4.4] SlimKat d2att (at & t) Stable 9.0 and [Gapps] [4.4.x] Official Slim GApps TRDS (Slimkat) and now not recognize me the sim card. i bought this phone in amazon for use it here in Madrid. i dont know if is a Modem issue. I appreciate all the help you can give me. Thank you. (sorry for my english)
Does your sim card have a pin code that you enter each time you boot the phone? If yes, does the phone ask for the pin before unlocking the sim? What bootloader and modem are currently on the phone? Did the phone work before installing a custom ROM?
@audit13 , mine said "no service available" after moving from KK to lolli and i flashed a "write to extsdcard fix zip" and it fixed the issue , i.e. can now make and recieve calls. dont know if is same issue (or why exactly that fixed mine) but i have a KK "write to extsdcard fix.zip" if you think it would help.

Thank you, audit13, my Sim card have a pin code, but doesn't ask for the pin, and yes, the phone work well before installing the custom rom. Where can I look the bootloader and modem?.
you can download the "samsung info app" from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2609045
and it will tell you bootloader and modem.
(p.s. as always audit13 , not trying to butt-in ; just trying to help out/save you a step )

Hey I have sgh-i747m canadian on stock jb . I flashed to CM 12.1 and my phone doesn't recognize sim. That means I can make calls and receive but no mobile data. Please help me
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using XDA-Developers mobile app
For the i747, sounds to me like the bootloader and modem are too old for the rom.
For theni747m, is the phone running the latest bootloader and modem?
@mrrocketdog, I've never heard about that zip until your helpful post. I must keep that in mind for the future even though I haven't had an s3 for quite a while.

The problem is the bootloader and modem. They need to be updated to work with the latest ROMs.
If the phone is sim unlocked, I recommend flashing back a stock rom using Odin and the firmware from sammobile, set up the phone, run ota updates until the phone is running the latest bootloader and modem. This is tedious and takes the most time but it is the safest method in my opinion.
If you don't want to go this route, just flash the latest modem and bootloader using twrp, flash the custom rom, flash gapps.
@Budare , here is the thread to upgrade bootloaders and modem if you decide on this route rather than flashing back to stock and running ota updates as @audit13 suggested , which IS the safest route. (always always always a certain % of risk ; no matter how small , to flash anything. not trying to scare you , just being honest)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2808654
p.s. you might want to think about changing to twrp recovery as cwm has not been updated in quite a long time.
p.s.s. here's the latest twrp DL page for sghi747 att

thank you audit13, but how i run ota updates??
To run ota updates, you need to use Odin to flash the stock att 4.1.1 rom using Odin. After setting up the phone, check for software update under the phone settings.

i dont know if is because im in Madrid, but the phone doesnt get updates, thats why i want to use another rom. what can i do?
Not sure but I have received OTA updates even when the phone is not in the phone's original country. The OTA updates came over wifi.
If you want to use another ROM, you can install TWRP, boot into TWRP, flash bootloader, flash modem, flash custom ROM, flash gapps. If flashing the modem bootloader in TWRP, DO NOT reboot the phone in between flashing this files and make sure the bootloader and modem version are made for each other.
