[Q] HTC one M8 OTA update issue lollipop - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
I am new to all this, techy stuff, and have recently bought a htc one m8. I had it rooted for me, but I didn't want to pay for GPE. I then found out Lollipop has been released, and tried to get it by going into software info on settings, but I couldn't get the lollipop update, as my phone says 'Your phone software is up to date with the latest version'. I realised that because of my root, my phone wasn't on the same channel as it was on before. I found another way to get lollipop, but that meant buying sunshine for $25. Is there another free alternative? I thought I could unroot my phone, then reroot it, but I do not know how to unroot, get update then reroot. Can I please get help?

Hi,
Thanks for writing to us at XDA Assist, in order to help you effectively I need to know which variant of the M8 you have please.

I have the gsm version

Ok, so it's not carrier branded at all?

no its not.
Going back to my question, i have actually found out my fone is on s-off bcus i had to unlock bootloader to root, meanin my fone is rooted with s-off. However, i would like to get gpe on my fone so i can get lollipop. Only issue is, the other methods do it on a normal htc one m8, not on a rooted htc one m8. Are the nethods the same meaning i can use the normal gpe conversion methods on my prerooted htc one m8, or do i need another method?

Thanks for the extra information, I'm actually asking you these questions for a reason, XDA Assist isn't a general technical support section so I needed to know exactly which variant you have in order to have this thread redirected correctly for you.
Please standby while we have your thread/question moved to the appropriate sub-forum for your device.

Unlocking your bootloader doesn't make you S-Off. Boot into your bootloader to check.
To get into bootloader, turn off your phone. Then hold down the power button plus vol down till your phone boots back up. You'll get a readout there that will tell you if you are S-Off or S-On.
If you can confirm that you are S-Off, I will guide you to converting your phone to GPE.

You can't use moonshine. The ONLY way to get s-off on this device is sunshine.

Yes, Sunshine, V3. And you are better off without the 5.0, if you want to S-OFF. Sunshine will most likely work on 4.4.4, and issues will appear while trying to S-OFF the Lollipop.

yeah delete all superuser binaries, or return to your original stock backup that you made before messing around with root

I have got my phone on bootloader, and I have a custom recovery file. However, I cannot seem to enter recovery mode. As I go to 'HBOOT' then 'RECOVERY' it shows the htc screen, but then it loads back to the bootloader screen. I have tried getting Hasoon's Toolkit and going into bootloader from here, and I have also tried getting a bat file and running that on my pc with my phone connected to it, same result. However, before this problem occurred, I had a message pop up, but this happened only once. This is what the message said:
SD Checking…
No Gift File…
Loading … ( OP6BDIAG.zip)
No image!
Loading … ( OP6BDIAG.nbh)
No image or wrong image!
Loading … ( OP6BIMG.zip)
Loading … ( OP6BIMG.nbh)
No image or wrong image!
After this, when I tried to go into recovery, the issue had then first occurred. Any suggestions on what to do? I have tried using a toolkit, a bat file, doing it through bootloader, and getting an app. Also, how can I clear my cache through bootloader?

No need to unroot for OTA. And it's free anyhow.

Ok. You say no need to unroot for its, but I have my phone rooted, but I cannot get lollipop which was released 3 weeks ago on HTC one m8. Please help me so I can get OTA updates.

You need a stock rom and recovery. So either 1 or both are not stock. Go to the thread where you have been already (the stock backup thread in the general section) and read up in there. All info and what you need to do is written down there.
Edit :
Ah just not getting notified for the update ? Like been said, wait for them to push. Or there is a custom (stock like) rom on your phone. If thats the case my first part stands

Which thread? Please send a link?

[Q] rumrunner / s-off without a working OS

It's been awhile since I've messed around with Android bootloaders, but my buddy just came to me with a seemingly fried HTC One that has been stock since it was purchased. I'm trying to help him out.
We can get to the bootloader, but that is it. No OS will load, and the factory reset option does nothing. I read up on unlocking the bootloader via HTCDev, but as I'm sure you're all aware, that no longer works (MID Error 160) due to Verizon patching the exploit.
I discovered the following XDA development thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2473644 , but I am not allowed to post on that thread because I don't have enough posts!
It's a little bit over my head, as I'm not familiar with the rumrunner / s-off process. However, it seems that I will need to follow those steps if I want to unlock the bootloader with the hope of flashing a ROM and resurrecting the phone.
My question is this: with the current state of this phone not being able to load any OS / ROM, and having a locked bootloader, is there any possibility I can unlock the bootloader and get a ROM flashed? Is it possible I'm overthinking this? Is there a way to simply flash the stock ROM again since that is seemingly nowhere to be found? Or is this phone simply bricked? Since I can get to the bootloader, I would imagine there is some light at the end of the tunnel.
Thanks for any help you guys can give. If someone wants to offer their assistance to me directly and take the issue off the message boards, I'll gladly PayPal you 20 USD if you have a solution!
Hope everyone is having a Happy New Year.
Just to clarify, the bootloader is locked and I have S-ON.
It seems I am in a bind, because I cannot flash any stock ROM or recovery with a locked bootloader. And I cannot unlock my bootloader because Verizon has blocked the standard exploit using HTCDev.
Hey buddy, what you need is a signed ruu which is the factory version of the os that comes with the phone. The signed part means that you can flash it with locked bootloader. Here Ya go
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=46506621
Just ask me if you have any questions. You will need to have the htc drivers and fastboot and adb installed of course.
Would that work if I wanted to return to 4.2 from 4.3, locked and s-on? I was too nieve and took the 4.3 update

Thanks so much for your reply. I've got the HTC drivers and the Android SDK loaded, and I used the fastboot tool when trying to unlock the boot loader using HTCDev.
Just to clarify, am I simply looking to download the signed RUU at the bottom of the second paper in that thread? Then flash it? Is that all? A lot of the other instructions in that thread seem irrelevant to my situation. If you could just point me in the right direction as to what I need to do with that RUU file, I'd appreciate it.

If you took the 4.3 update you will need the 4.3 ruu which I haven't seen yet....so if locked and s-on you are screwed. Now depending on how far they took the flashing and since you say its a sprint phone you might be able to HTC Dev unlock and at least get something booted until s-off is achieved on 4.3.

I got everything running smooth and fast again with the RUU software. Now all I need to know is if I re-root again will it keep the update after I unlock the bootloader again?

Yes. After you apply the update it is part of your phone. You can root etc without any issues.
Just reading this... I kinda had a similar problem. I got the OTA to install, but then lost root and couldn't use Scotty's method to unlock the bootloader...so I had to use the HTC .bin file. That reset the whole phone. And now...for whatever reason, things are all screwed up.
When I boot/reboot, it comes up presumably on the TMO network, but then it tries to switch to Wi-Fi calling... It finally does, but then it says I have no data service (i.e., from the TMO network...Wi-Fi seems to work). Then I went into the "My T-Mobile" app and stupidly agreed to let them collect diagnostics... Besides informing them that my phone is rooted (which I would just prefer they not know), now that app is acting strange...from the log it seems to be trying to run the "diagnostic" but being denied due to inadequate privileges. And when I try and revoke their right to collect diagnostics it tells me to "insert SIM".
I can't tell if it is everything I did, or if there is perhaps something wrong with this latest update... Everything was working beautifully on 2.22.531.5.

Whenever I lose root like that, I run the Sunshine apk and let it do a temp root for me. You can bail out of Sunshine right after it does the temp root. You don't even need to have paid for Sunshine to use this method (of course you need to pay for Sunshine to achieve S-Off).
I have s-off. Can I use temp root to just install the Harmon kardon hack? I'm back to stock recovery.

[q] debranding

Hello. I have an HTC ONE M8 CID : ORANG001. Bootloader LOCKED and S-ON. Running : Android 4.4.3
It is carrier unlocked, I can use whatever sim I like with this phone. Now, I want to get rid off ORANG001 and change it with a HTC__001 or some other CID so I can receive updates directly from HTC.
Does anyone know some safe steps to accomplish this ? Or I can change somehow the recovery with another one ? I think ORANG001 means that is orange stock recovery. It's not carrier locked, but still, I want to replace the ORANG001.

Yeah but to S-OFF one must be rooted first, right?
UPDATE : I just unlocked the bootloader. I want to root the device but what TWRP should I flash ?
UPDATE : Rooted the device and installed SuperSU via TWRP. Next, getting S-OFF.
UPDATE : I get this message while flashing firewater : firewater can not work on your device.
Until I manage to S-OFF can I flash through TWRP a custom ROM like CM for example ? Or S-OFF is a must for doing this ?

S-off is required to write to all partitions, change cid and so on (google and xda are your friends)... You can still achieve this by flashing a stock-like rom like arhd or maximus te and paying 25 bucks to Sunshine developers...

Are you sure you need s-off?
From your posts, I can plainly tell you are a noob. (no offence, that just what we call the new to rooting people here.)
S-on is there to protect your device from becoming bricked when you flash something you shouldn't be.
With S-off, if you screw up, your $700 phone might be turned into a paperweight with absolutely zero chance that the warranty is still valid.
If you want my advice, don't go S-off till you know what you are doing.

I sent a PM then, and have just sent a new one two minutes ago before I saw this post.
Also, I just tried to send a friend request that didn't deliver because there was no friend button for it?
The junior status maybe?
Anyways, the gist of it was this:
I was very mistaken about you. You are obviously not a noob from what I've seen on subsequent posts, you are just an M8 noob. I was in your position once, and I get it 100%
The thing is, on the Q&A, I get sick of the same questions over and over and over.
And also, people getting into soft brick trouble because of s-off.
I have no worries about you though buddy.
You will be just fine. It's not really that hard. Just different than the rest.
It's worth it though. The M8 is SOOO nice!

Rooted, ROM'd, and wondering!

I've just finished rooting and installed a custom ROM on my device, but now I'm looking into S-Off. My question is, how?
I did this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2706391
and now I don't have Wi-Fi, which apparently means that my firmware needs to be updated.
How, exactly, does one do that when you're no longer on the service provider it was on?
I'm on T-Mobile now, it was on AT&T. The phone is an AT&T HTC One M8.
I've got the files for Firewater, but I'm not 100% sure how to go about it, other than following tutorials I've found. Anyway, if someone could assist me in this search, it would be greatly appreciated.
Chances are firewater is not going to work, you'll need to use Sunshine S-off (pay 25$), S-off jas nothing to do with carrier
Sunshine: http://theroot.ninja
Firewater instructions: http://firewater-soff.com/instructions/
If I try Firewater, is there a chance to royally mess up my work? I.E. brick me, or will it error out beforehand?
firewater does NOT work. and will never work again. You can own the files but they won't work as it has has to establish a connection to the s-off server which is offline. sunshine is the one and only way. you can read that in the s-off thread here on xda and on their website !
and also questions belong in the Q&A section so please use that board the next time instead of the general subforum.
good luck with sunshine

Ah, see, this is the info that I couldn't find at all. I had no idea it was server-related, so it wouldn't work. I thought all the files were local, that's why I was investigating. Well, as long as Sunshine will work and not mess anything up, I guess that's what I'm going to have to do. Even though there's another ROM on my phone, I should still be able to use Sunshine and get the firmware updated without any issues, yeah? I would just like to get confirmation from someone who knows my exact situation and not search the forums to a situation "Similar" to mine and eff up my phone.

S-OFF means do as you like, change firmwares, convert to GPE and back to sense. S-OFF is freedom
Okay, here's where I'm at, if anyone would inform me in the direction I should take...
I've unlocked the bootloader, flashed a ROM, and rooted. Wi-Fi doesn't work because I need the newer firmware on the device.
In order to get the newer firmware, I need to have S-Off. I don't. Sunshine doesn't work because the ROM I have flashed is a 5.0.1 version.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2706391 If it helps.
Can I go digging to find a KitKat-based ROM and see if Sunshine will work then, or do I need to go through the BS to flash stock everything on my phone and THEN run Sunshine? I'd really like some advice before I royally mess something up.
Thanks in advance!
Edit: I found this and it looks like something that might work. Flash InsertCoin, download and pay for Sunshine, S-Off, flash firmware, go back to SkyDragon?

Forgive me for asking, but I've searched... Where is this rooted stock one you're talking about?
All right, I've flashed back to as stock as I can find, but it's still not allowing Sunshine to be installed.
However, I've stumbled upon something saying that if the Recovery is fastboot booted, it acts as though the device is S-Off? If I run the recovery in such a manner, could I possibly flash a new Firmware on there like that?

I did it with that one..
Okay, here's an update:
I flashed that ROM you showed me, Alex, and then used Sunshine to S-Off my M8. That worked. I paid for it, all is well.
Flashed the Viper ROM, but didn't have Wi-Fi. So, I went back to SkyDragon, same thing.
I flashed firmware 4.28.401.9 (I think. I did typed that from memory..) but I still have no Wi-Fi.
I'm going to try to flash the GPE firmware now. I'll edit once I get it up and running!
Thanks so much guys! I really appreciate your help!

If your wifi isn't working with ViperOne, then the firmware didn't flash correctly. Go to your bootloader/hboot and check the readout there. What it says under OS is your firmware version. If it is blank it is because of your recovery. TWRP 2.8.0.3 is recommended. You can also tell by the hboot number. 3.19 = 4.4.4 firmware

That's awesome to know. I literally just flashed the GPE firmware, and I think I partitioned properly. (no errors while installing) It's currently doing the first boot.
Flashing that GPE firmware was nerve-racking. It went sooo slow. Here's hoping it goes through! UPDATES TO COME! I'm excited.
UPDATE:
HOLY HNNNNNNNNNNNNNG IT WORKED.
Good LORD I CAN FINALLY DOWNLOAD MY UPDATES.
Please excuse the caps, I'm effing excited right now. THANKS SO MUCH EVERYONE.
Nice that you have it working.. Don't forget.. If you want to go back to sense you need the sense firmware.. As the partitions are a bit different.. Btw I'm very happy ? with gpe 5

Right at this point, I don't care to go back to Sense firmware. I'm spoiled by the bright look of SkyDragon, so this is where I'm staying!

[Q] Debrand / Remove Network branding in HTC One M8

Hi there.
I've recently bought an HTC One M8 online and was furious to find out it has Vodafone logo on bootup.
I consider myself above Novice but just below expert when it comes to ROMs, rooting, flashing, etc. and i would like to try to debrand and remove the network logo without the complicated rooting.
Can anyone help please? Many thanks.
The only 'real' way of doing this is with S-OFF so you can flash the unbranded EU ROM to the phone

The only working method is sunshine which u can get here http://theroot.ninja but I would try firewater first if that doesnt work it will need to be sunshine.
What is Sunshine or Firewater? Are they maps or apt files that i need to download? I have a Mac. Is that a problem?
And if i do the S-off process will it completely rebrand and remove the network logo so i can use the "normal" One M8 and set it up as normal?

If you don't know a lot about android development I wouldn't bother s-off as you can hard brick your phone if you don't know what you are doing. You need to flash stock firmware which will have the hboot.
So, how do i flash a stock ROM on my One M8? Is it easy? Will having a Mac be a factor?
And will flashing be able to debrand it?

Having a Mac shouldn't be a problem as you can get fastboot and adb for Mac. Search on Google on how to do it as there is a lot of articles. It depends where the branding is, if its after the green HTC logo then yes as that will be the ROM.
I see.
So, what is the process usually? What do i need to download first? And then after downloading what do i need to do next?
All i want is to remove the Vodafone network branding that's all. Please advice.
Thank you.

Well first of all you will need to unlock your bootloader at http://htcdev.com or you can s-off using either firewater or sunshine. Then you need to flash a custom recovery like TWRP or CWM. Always make a back up! Then flash a custom ROM. But I'm not sure if that will remove the branding as the branding could be in the hboot which u will need s-off to modify it.

All the people on here are being very nice, you consider yourself just below expert but your questions certainly aren't. The point of this site is to help, not necessarily to teach. I suggest you go do some Google searches and learn about the things that people mentioned here rather than just continuously asking questions. To be honest all you have to do is install a new splash screen and/or boot image. That alone is not difficult but you need to do some learning first because there are some prerequisites you'll need to have done in order to flash it.
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using XDA Premium HD app
I appreciate all the help. I will Google some stuff and will ask again if there are any more issues.
Many thanks
For reference, Firewater no longer works so Sunshine is the ONLY method for S-OFF at this time
