[Q] Need help fixing my Gnex - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi,
it is the second time my Gnex went into endless reboot loop sessions.
It will boot, load crash after few seconds and reboot again.
I had it unlocked in the store i bought it, and had stock rom (Not sure about the version).
Tried to do factory reset from fastboot, from recovery, and from android. Also tried to flash custom boot loader, Nothing works.
Although fastboot writes it successfuly completed the action so does the factory reset. The phone will work for few seconds but no more.
Also tried using WugFresh, for factory reset and for Flash Stock + unroot in soft-break status
I have no ideas what to do next,
Please help.
Mike

Hi Mike, I think more information is required.
- What action did you take immediately prior to having your phone get stuck in the bootloop? Were you trying to install a Custom Recovery or ROM?
- You mention that this is the second time this has happened. Do you know what caused it to bootloop the first time, and if yes what fixed it?
- When your Gnex is in Fastboot/Bootloader mode, and using a tool like Minimal ADB and Fastboot on your computer, does the tool recognize the Device ID after using the fastboot devices command?
You may also want to read through this thread.

Hi thanks for the reply, i am a simple user, prior to the bootloop i was using whatsapp, actually the android crashes few seconds after getting a whatsaap message (i recieve notification and it goes down). Previous time also i didn't do anything special. i never installed custom recovery or roms... previous time it was fixed by a lab the phone was on warranty.
And yes the tool recognize the device.

So your device receives a WhatsApp message/notification, restarts, and then gets stuck in a bootloop?
That is very strange, as personally I've only ever encountered bootloops after bad ROM flashes (usually after I accidentally skipped a step somewhere during the process). Bootloops usually don't happen to regular users who are just using their phone purchased as-is from a store/carrier.
If you can get it to boot back into Android, try uninstalling WhatsApp and see if that helps. Hopefully it's still under warranty, as you may have to take it back to the store and have them look at it.

Tried to uninstall whatsapp but it crashes before i manage to do so.
even managed to access memory via TWRP and delete whatsaap manually but somehow it appears again after restart.
Something is terribly wrong

Have you tried using Odin to repartition and restore to stock? Could be a corrupted partition. Check out this guide

Why???
Just use fastboot, Odin is evil. Nexus aren't Touchwiz crap phones.

Let's see then. Be prepared to spend at least 30min reading, and re-reading, until you actually feel comfortable in what you're doing/typing in. If you're not sure about the technical terms and what lies behind them, read this thread's #1 First Post.
What's your device variant? maguro? toro? toroplus? This will tell which factory image you need to flash.
You need to flash latest factory image, which is (for maguro variant) Android Build 4.3 (JWR66Y). Read #1 First Post on this thread. And I mean, READ IT! Do not do anything else to your device until you do.
After you flash the factory image, that first boot will take a while to reach Android. Chill out. Go get yourself a drink. Take your time. It should have booted into Android already when you get back. It should be fine, but if not, you need to enable USB debugging under Settings > Developer Options, to check the system log.
If after 15min, it still has booted yet, pull the battery out, wait a few secs, put it back in.
Use the 3bc (3-button combo) to reach fastboot mode again. Flash a custom recovery. That's done by downloading the latest TWRP or CWM (i'll leave that choice up to you, be mindful that you might wanna try them both in the future), and running on the host (the PC):
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery_filename_here.img
Don't reboot the device. Use the volume keys to "Reboot to recovery" straight from fastboot. After a few seconds, you should be seeing the custom recovery you've flashed with the fastboot command above.
Now comes the part where ADB is required. I hope you've already read the answers to questions "Where do I get the driver for my PC?" and "Why do I need to install the driver twice?". If not, read them now. Also, read "What is ADB?". TIP: When a custom recovery is actually running on the device, ADB mode is already active by default, so when hooking up to the pc the device will show as an ADB interface, so installing the driver (if needed/not done yet) is piece of cake.
After you get ADB to recognize your device (like, you see your device's SN on the output of command `adb devices`).. You need to copy a custom ROM to your device, and flash it. That will get you, most likely than not, Android's USB debugging by default (read answer to "What is an insecure boot image?" on the first link), and that will allow you to see the system log, WHILE Android is booting up. Why do we wanna do this? Cos we want to see if any errors show up, something that may tell us what's failing.
When choosing a ROM from the Android Development section, ask around in the thread if the ROM has USB debugging enabled by default.
Read "What are the ADB commands?" in the thread I first linked to. You'll need to learn at least `adb push` for now.
Once you get the ROM in your /sdcard/ or whatever folder you like, disconnect the USB cable, wipe data/factory reset, then install zip from sdcard (that zip you pushed before).. Forget about gapps for now.
Connect the usb cable, reboot, and once you see padlock screen go away, start trying to run `adb devices`. Do you see your SN in the output? Once you see it, good, it already connected to adb on the device. Run `adb logcat` and try to look out for errors. Logcat is the system log.
To know how to grab that output to a text file so that you can share it with us.. Google it, my fingers hurt.

Thanks beekay201,
As a matter a fact. shortly before you posted this answer i gave up and gave my phone to a local lab.
But unfortunately they were useless and didn't manage to do anything claiming they don't have spares for my phone, tried to explain that it is not a hardware issue, but all in vain .
Anyway, ill go over your instructions and ill update the results soon.

[Q] Recovering from unusual boot loop

Let me preface this by saying yes I know there are dozens if not more threads on boot loop problems. I have recovered from boot loops before. This is very different.
I rooted my incredible with unrevokedForever and had cyanogen 6 on it. Everything was fine until yesterday I woke up to it in a boot loop, but not the cyanogen boot animation, the white HTC Incredible screen. I can only get to HBOOT, once I try to enter recovery, use an update.zip, or anything after the HBOOT page it goes into its loop. Should I pursue the RUU and find a windows computer or will that not help me?
I think I may have to bite the bullet and buy a new phone. As obviously they will not replace an S-OFF phone. Any help is appreciated.

As long as you can still get into HBOOT and Recovery, you should be okay. Your best bet is to get the RUU and go back to stock/s-on, then re-root/s-off (if you want). I had to do this once, and it's pretty straight forward. Just do a search for Bezerker7's Ultimate Get Back to Stock Thread. It has all the info you'll need on how to do it.

The problem is I can only get into HBOOT, not recovery. It would be a fairly simple matter if I had access to recovery features. Would RUU work without access to recovery?

Looks like you'd need recovery to flash back to s-on first. First you could try flashing a recovery image using fastboot, go here for that information. You'd also need to find a 2.5.x.x recovery image, go here for the 2.5.1.2 image. Don't worry about renaming it, you won't have to do that here like the page says to.
Then, you could go here for instructions on using the RUU to flash back to stock.

Hit an unfortunate snag right away. fastboot (nor adb) is detecting the device. Screen is showing XC SHIP S-OFF as it should, it is in FASTBOOT USB mode and my computer detects the USB itself just fine.

Thank you though that was a great suggestion! (Was very hopeful for a second there
I've never used the fastboot command before, but I seem to recall that sometimes my PC's don't report connection from ADB, but I haven't checked recently... Hmmm...
Just checked and it does report a device using ADB. Did you try typing the fastboot command to flash the recovery image file: fastboot flash recovery /path/to/<recovery.img file> anyways to see what happens? I am assuming if it isn't detecting the connection, it may fail...
EDIT: Did you pull the battery out, put it back in and try to get into recovery again? If you, try doing a user/factory reset + dalvik cache before trying to install a ROM from your SD card.
This may or may not help, but I had a similar issue of not having the phone recognized by fastboot while playing with a friends EVO Shift. I was able to use the program described in this thread to uninstall all HTC drivers. Then, when the phone was recognized and new drivers installed automatically, fastboot worked as expected.

My ADB daemon would always recognize it in the past, when the phone was working. Yes I tried the command anyway, even though fastboot devices did not return anything. It hung there waiting for the device to be connected.

Yes, I pulled battery out multiple times, and when installing the rom I factory reset, cleared dalvik and normal cache through Clockwork. Cyanogen was working fine for weeks, this is a freak concurrence that happened without warning. I woke up to find it this way, or rather, it woke me up with its constant rebooting. lol.

I appreciate the help however I am using Linux, and that seems to be a windows issue. I have not had issue detecting the device until this problem arouse. The sentiment is of course appreciated though, please do not feel that I am ungrateful! You have both been very supportive. I think I have just about resigned to dump money on a new phone. This time I will leave it stock for awhile and see if this occurs a third time.

This happened to me and many other people. It has nothing to do with the fact that you rooted as my replacement from verizon did the same thing even before I rooted. Finally on my 2nd replacement (my 3rd DINC), it has stopped happening.
You're going to have to take it to the store. The guy who looked at my phone looked right at the HBOOT (where it says s-OFF) and then said "we're going to have to send you another one."
So you may get lucky. Your other option (if you're nervous about the store seeing the s-OFF) is just to call Verizon and ask them to send you a replacement. My experience has been that the folks in the Verizon store have no idea what the f they're doing, and you'll probably be just fine taking it in.

Thanks for the advice but now I'm installing the crossbones ROM 2.3.0 but I'm stuck installing it,
I used to flash roms in my other phone a galaxy s3 and I've never had this kind of problems...

Installing Crossbones ROM
that's all
What would you recommend me in this case?
Should I remove the baterry again? I've been waiting for almost 15 minutes and nothing again :/

You did everything right then. I dont know why it would hang. Id say pull the battery but like I said, it could mess something up if its actually doing something. Especially if it says it already wiped the system. If that happens, you're going to have to restore a factory image and start all over again. Its up to you if you want to take the chance. A ROM flash shouldnt take that long.

No problem. I hope you get it working. Or at least to boot up again.
Supposedly sideload in cwm is a bug with no way to back out unless you pull the battery or have usb connected [exit in command prompt?]. I was starting to like the touch recovery option, but recently i've accidentally pressed a couple of things i shouldnt have.
Sorry to hijack, but I'm attempting to sideload the 4.2.2 update from stock, and my sideload command seems to do nothing. I'm sure i'm connected as it displays my device number and "sideload" next to it. Using the sideload command simply displays the "help" list of the adb commands.
Is it a driver issue perhaps? Something else? (i noticed my batter was low just before attempting this).
Now i'm stuck in the waiting for adb sideload file.
hippochris: update your adb, or look in the help output to see if the sideload command is there. Also, i did this via stock recovery, selecting it in there.

I do NOT see the sideload option in the help output. I have all the latest updates from the SDK manager. Maybe i need to reinstall the SDK. I will give that a go. Thanks.
Edit: Downloaded the latest SDK/ADB and that worked. From 1.0.29 to 1.0.31
I've messed my phone with SideLoad, please help
I booted my Galaxy Nexus into custom recovery (CWM) for some other task but mistakenly gone into sideload menu!
Got no option to get back to main menu or reboot, i took the battery out and re-inserted. Now, my cell is not turning on since then!
Tried another time, took battery off but no luck..... what to do?
I've custom ROM, MIUI V5 4.2.2. My cell is unlocked and rooted, of course.
Please help.
What if the battery is non-removable?
Had stuck in that *** sideload on my SM-E500H and been waiting for the battery to drained it up all.
Yep, tried hardware button combinations as many times as I could.
if you can't take out the battery of your device and if longpressing whatever does not solve it
1. install adb on pc.
2. connect device with usb cable to pc
3. enter following command
Code:
adb sideload /dev/null
the device will complain that file is not valid but it will come out of the sideloading state

[Q] bootloop no recovery

Wife's Verizon Galaxy Nexus 4.2.2
Bone stock, completely un-tampered with, stuck in bootloop. If I try to access recovery I just get the Android dude with the red exclamation point sign, and eventually it reboots and back to the bootloop problem.
I need to save the data on the phone (pictures/videos). Flashing factory image erases all data, but could a person use Odin to flash the Verizon 4.2.2 OTA update? Is it possible or will Odin erase everything anyway?
That is stock recovery. Odin flash also wipes user data. Is the bootloader unlocked?

Oh, sorry for my ignorance, and the bootloader is locked.

You will be able to flash a custom recovery or even only boot a custom recovery through fastboot ('fastboot flash recovery recovery.img' for the first, 'fastboot boot recovery.img' for the latter). Read that first post on the thread I linked you to. It will teach you what is what and how to interact with the tools.
Amazing, I managed to load CWM, however it appears to me that all I will really be able to do from it is a factory reset, is that correct? Also do the fastboot flashes take even if USB Debugging is turned off?

While on CWM, ADB/USB debugging is active.
Use 'adb pull /sdcard/' to pull all contents under /sdcard/.
a manta wrote this.
Success...kind of. The "adb pull /sdcard/" command did not work, for some reason it kept freezing on the first file it found. I then navigated to the Camera folder and pulled all the .jpg files, which is what I was primarily after. ADB did not like pulling .mp4 files so I just called it good there.
After that I tried using fastboot to flash boot, system, recovery, and even radio images, but phone was still in bootloop. I then ran the flash all batch file that came with the factory image I downloaded, everything went fine, but still no boot. Also tried Odin to flash factory image, but every time I clicked on "Start" I would get a "program stopped responding" error message(no matter what version of Odin I used).
At this point I believe the phone has a major problem that cannot be repaired with software, time to lock the bootloader and send it in I suppose. If anybody has any other ideas let me know, but I'm not very hopeful.
Thank you to everyone that contributed to my data recovery, this really is an awesome place, guess I'll stick around.

Someone, please help me! :(

When I boot up my tablet, I get nonstop error messages telling me things have stopped working. I tried getting help from someone else on a different site, and this is what they told me to say: I flashed the GROUPER lollipop ROM onto a FLO. Someone please help me!!! It's a totally clean tablet. no files on it except android.
Go to Google's Nexus firmware page, download the appropriate firmware, follow the instructions: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
Only thing I don't know is whether or not you'll have to repartition the internal flash.
I'm a dummy.

i don't understand how to do all that though I'm not good with command prompts... and nexus root tool kit has done me no good. Could you dumb down the instructions for me?
Then it's time for you to learn. The page has step-by-step instructions. There isn't any way too dumb down the instructions.
You have to start somewhere. Now is a good time. If you had learned before, you wouldn't be in this predicament.
So sit down, take a couple deep breaths, then read the instructions a few times. Download the Android SDK and factory image, then get everything set up. Don't panic, it's not nearly as difficult as you're making it out to be. Stop psyching yourself out. Take it step by step. If you get stuck, leave the cmd prompt and post the issue you've run into here.
Might help if you type out the instructions here after you've read them over several times. I'm glad to help but you gotta take ownership of your tablet and put in some effort to learn and educate yourself.
Just try, I'm sure you'll understand it by the end of tonight or the end of the weekend. You don't have to be a master of fastboot and adb, I sure as hell am not. I never recommend the use of toolkits, especially by those with no understanding of fastboot and adb. Once you have a basic understanding of fastboot and adb, go ahead and use any toolkit you want because by then you'll know how to get yourself out of any jams using those 2 tools.
It is almost impossible to hard brick this device, even if you flash the wrong ROM on this device..
Download this utility and it will bring your Nexus back to life....

I'm officially giving up. Nothing works. It boots into the OS and then pops up a bunch of error messages. I've tried lollipop, kitkat, cyanogenmod, locked bootloader, unlocked bootloader, and I'm done. GR! Thank you though, for your help.

Nothing works? Just flash the factory image. Flashing Roms in recovery isn't going to help you. Before you give up, just use wugs toolkit to save it. If you give up without even trying the right procedure (fastboot flash factory image) then i recommend you not root again after you fix it. But wugfresh toolkit will fix it for you with a couple clicks.
I tried NRTK

The toolkit doesn't work. I tried that 9 times, both downloading my own OS to flash, and letting the toolkit download it. Every time it either boot loops it or does the error message spam thing again. That's why I was trying to use SDK... And that didn't work either. And my drivers NEVER INSTALL RIGHT, so it's all just slowly killing me inside...
Make sure fastboots working first. Put the tablet in bootloader mode by shutting it off then holding power and volume down (or up I forget, you want the screen that says start at the top and has device info at the bottom left.)
Connect to computer then go into the platform-tools folder in the SDK folder, hold shift and right click over the window>open command prompt here.
Type fastboot devices and hit enter. Does it show a serial number or does it show nothing? (waiting for device or something like that) If nothing you should uninstall all drivers for the tablet in device manager and install the google usb driver from the sdk manager in the sdk you installed.
Once you see the serial number you're almost done. If your bootloader is locked type fastboot oem unlock
Now from the factory image copy the image-razor.zip, bootloader.img and flash-all.bat to the platform-tools folder.
Double click flash-all.bat
That's it.
I think that it will be beneficial for you to look into using virtual machines (VM's). It allows you to run different operating systems directly from your computer.
The second half to this equation is learning to use Linux (Ubuntu is my choice). Since Android is built from Linux, you don't need special drivers to recognize your devices.
Another option to run Ubuntu is to create a Virtual Hard Drive on your PC, and install Ubuntu onto it (YouTube it, and follow the directions carefully).
Lastly, you can always get a flash drive that is 8gb or greater (16gb or 32gb is recommended), and install Ubuntu onto it was well. It will move little slower than your PC, but your issues will be solved and manageable.
Why am I advocating for Ubuntu? Because it works. PM me if your are interested in learning more, but don't expect me to do all of the work. You need to educate yourself a bit to actually follow my instructions.

First off, let me explain that this device is almost impossible to destroy by flashing the wrong rom. Your over reacting due to inexperience, your Nexus is fine as long as you can boot into Fastboot. When the device is powered down, press the power button and the Volume down key for about 30 seconds, if you can boot into Fastboot, your device is just fine.. Nexus devices are extremely hard to hard brick.. RELAX and realize this is a good time to learn something new, this device is the perfect device to experiment with... You seem to not have the patients and you just need to relax watch a few youtube videos.. No one is going to do it for you.. About 5 years ago I was in the same place you are right now, and I took the time to figure how to fix what ever I did to mess it up.. Its not hard once you realize what your doing. The Toolkit is a swiss army knife of tools that can fix, repair and flash stock roms. Did you unlock the bootloader? Take a breather, give it some time and figure it out like we all did at one time or another, none of us here had our hands held during the learning process with Android devices..
Edit: I'm almost sure you did not unlock your device, to know for sure if your device is unlocked you would see a small padlock that appears to be in the unlocked position at the bottom of your screen while powering on.. If you power your Nexus on, and you DO NOT see a unlocked symbol at the bottom of your screen, you DID NOT unlock your device, thus meaning you have to unlock it to flash it properly.. There are dozens of people in this forum right now that would be more than happy to buy your device cheap and fix it themselves.. If they can do it, you can too..
^Yeah like my last post, those are perfectly fine instructions. If that don't work, stuck at "erasing user data" or something you're ****ed. Most likely.Try a different cord/usb 2.0/computer
Tried a few things. Got any other ideas?

Thank you for your reply. Do you have any suggestions though for my situation? My bootloader was unlocked. I did try locking it then unlocking it several times though. I've tried two seperate stock ROMs, different usb cables, different usb ports, and it now tells me that fastboot is not working. even a link is greatly appreciated. I think it is a driver problem. My tablet does boot into the OS though. I can use the ui for about 10 seconds, then a notification pops up mid-screen: "unfortunately, the process android.process.acore has stopped." Please, even a link is greatly appreciated. I've tried just about everything to get these drivers working, and to get this tablet working. I will continue to research as well. Wish me luck!
Wug's tool has been invaluable to me in the past. I have gone from KitKat to Lollipop, back and forth, different ROMS, stuck boots, bad flashes. Like Zap says if you can get it to Bootloader then get Wug's tool to connect in fastboot, it will do the rest.
A couple times I have ran into problems where my computer has not seen my Nexus 5 because of the drivers, just google nexus usb drivers and install the latest ones.

Got any ideas on Fastboot.exe stopping working when the flash process begins? it fails sending bootloader and then fastboot.exe fails. It says on the screen when i close the error message it's booting into bootloader, but the tablet never restarts. it stays on bootloader(where i had it in the first place.) It should turn off the screen and go back into bootloader. Please, any feedback is appreciated.
Have you tried selecting the option of hardbrick on the tool?

My HTC M8 Stuck at ONE Logo once restarted. No Recovery, No DWNLD mode available.

I've seen already this thread suggested by XDA thread locator.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/help/verizon-htc-one-m8-stuck-htc-logo-t3163088
But I'd try to explain as simple as possible the whole situation which happened hours ago.
Don't know what happened but my mothers phone went off and restarted with htc one logo on it and nothing else later.
Power button itself doesnt work and is not responding.
Configuration PWR + VOL UP gives me restart but no recovery mode, giving me sound effect of restarting phone and ONE logo on it without any other reaction whatsoever.
PWR + VOL DWN zero reaction
PWR + VOL UP & DOWN pressed together restarting the phone and then gives me HTC ONE LOGO and nothing else.
when Phone is plugged in to the computer and I'm forcing the phone to restart it shows me new Device on the computer as a CD Driver every time.
So I think there is still hope to get this guy back to life.
It's running on custom rom but unknown version because it was purchased as a refurb from ebay 2 years ago and it was running just fine utill this very day.
I'm absolutely noob with flashing twrping etc so please ELI5 if possible, any type of help will be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Hey, I had this same problem a couple of days ago. Here's what I did to get the phone into fastboot, from where you can install a recovery, factory reset etc.
1. Hold the power button + vol up button for about 10-20 seconds. This should shut down the phone.
2. Hold the power button + vol down button to restart the phone back into fastboot.
If you can get into fastboot, there are plenty of guides which can help you flash a twrp image. If you want me to give you some instructions on that just reply and let me know. Good luck!
Note that this phone doesn't have download mode (as some other Android devices do); nor is there a button combo to go directly to recovery. But you can almost certainly still get to bootloader, and from there boot recovery. In the current condition, you can get to bootloader by:
1) Hold Power+ vol up (as you have been) to restart the phone.
2) Once the screen goes dark (signaling it is about to reboot) let go of the buttons, and only hold vol down
3) Don't let go of vol down until the bootloader screen appears.
4) If the above sequence fails, its virtually always because the user just didn't get the timing right (either started pressing vol down too late, or let go too early). Just repeat steps 1-3 until you get to bootloader.
Once in bootloader, try to reflash the ROM, or restore a TWRP backup (if you have one). Spontaneously stuck on HTC logo screen is often a result of the OS/ROM becoming corrupt or otherwise damaged, and flashing/restoring the ROM will often fix it.
Thanks @redpoint73 I've managed to get to the preinstalled recovery.
Sadly reflashing/factory reset failed few times due corrupted files.
I'm ok with the fact that I lost the data on the phone since most of it was stored on the cloud.
Now I need ROM to flash on the phone thru recovery but I don't know which one would you reccomend.
It's my mom's phone so basically reliabilty and robustness over flashing lights and numerous unnecessary functions.
Version of android doesn't really matter.
Thanks again for help so far.
Can I put the rom I'm about to flash on external SD Card or I have to transfer it thru computer to the phone?
TWRP might be extra helpful or the recovery it's functions are just fine?

I'd need to know more about the phone in order to give any suggestions.
With the phone connected to computer, boot into fastboot mode, and (assuming you have fastboot setup on your computer) do the command: fastboot getvar all
Then post the results (delete IMEI and serial number before posting).
Also, what version TWRP (if that is the recovery installed)?

You will be able to flash a ROM from the SD card, if using TWRP.

Not sure what is being asked here (can't quite understand). Are you saying that another recovery besides TWRP is presently installed?
@redpoint73 I don't have TWRP but this...
Maybe pictures will justify the real situation.
I don't have the fastboot preinstalled on computer. (yet)
I wouldn't mind link to the pack with "must have" to complete the process

You have what is called the "stock recovery" or official HTC recovery.
You can't flash anything but OTA updates, or other official (HTC) signed zips with this. You need a "custom" recovery like TWRP in order to flash things like custom ROMs. So I'm curious what you meant before when you posted:

What exactly were you trying to "reflash", what were the exact steps, and the results (specific error messages, etc.).
I did the factory reset but it didn't help still stucking at ONE logo like posted initially. So this is basically the situation right now. I was able to get to recovery but nothing else.

Okay, so you're confusing the terms. Factory reset doesn't flash/reflash anything (flash meaning to install some firmware or software to the device). The only thing that factory reset does is wipe user data.
At this point, I'd suggest the best/easiest course of action in the current conditions (stock recovery, locked bootloader) would be to run the RUU intended for your device. Your device is the AT&T version, so the RUU can be found at the bottom of the page (and instructions on how to install): http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-one-m8-att/news/
RUU is a complete factory image. You download to a PC (PC required, won't work on Mac or Linux) connect the phone (booted into bootloader-fastboot mode) then just run the RUU, and it will do the rest.
I'm confidant this will get the phone up and running. Your mom may not like all the AT&T branding and apps, if it wasn't there before, and AT&T is not her carrier (one of the main reasons for these devices to have custom ROM - to remove carrier branding). But we can cross that bridge (if need be), after we get the phone working.
Installed Software, downloaded RUU from website provided, turned phone into fastboot before installing RUU.
Something started happening with the phone during installation but installation itself cant be finished, it's an endless process of update, phone is already plugged 3rd hour or so to the computer but the update status remain the same.
Should I try different approach?

It just gets stuck sometimes. Just kill the process, and start the RUU again. It will probably work fine on the next try. It's a bit scary, as it says not to stop the process or disconnect the phone while it's running. But if it gets stuck like this, there isn't anything else you can do.
Good News, it's working. But it's bloated to the bones. How I can get rid of the carrier unnecessary software?
I was to afraid to kill the process during update to avoid scenario of bricking my phone completely.
But It's working!
