Mount NAS (Drobo 5N) as Source in Kodi - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Drobo 5N as a NAS with all of my media on it. For the life of me, I can't get Kodi to mount it as a source. I am able to see the Drobo in the list of servers but I can't get past that point. I have disabled any security on the folder share and I have also tried to manually add the SMB share with the IP address of the device but haven't had any luck. There are other protocols that can be used but I'm not sure if it should be that difficult, nor do I know how to use the other protocols. I am able to see and access my PC shares just fine. Does anybody have any ideas?
I am a newbie to Kodi and I am beyond excited to get this working. I have been using a WDTV Live Streaming Media Player for many years and this is going to take my movie experience to a whole new level if I can get it working. Any help is appreciated!

Anyone? I'm dying to get this thing working. I've had a small taste of what Kodi can do by connecting it to my PC but I need to connect it to my NAS. I'm so close but so far!

Simply use the following connection:
smb://droboIP/share_name
Mine was smb://192.168.1.100/movies

I keep getting "Error - Connection timed out" even though I have a hardwired Ethernet connection! Can you help?

I don't have a Drobo 5N. I have a Synology unit. SMB was way too problematic. I use NFS instead and it works much nicer. I don't know how easy/difficult it will be to set up on your NAS.

[APP] Subsonic

Just set this up again after trying it out about a year ago. It's AWESOME!
Requires a donation for the server after a month trial, but it's well worth it.
I can stream my ENTIRE multimedia library (which is stored on my home Windows 7 machine) to my phone. Flawlessly.
Music AND video files!
All the work is done server side, so it'll transcode (on the fly) files into whatever bitrate mp3 you specify.
For video, I have it set up to transcode into flash video, which works FLAWLESSLY on the Epic Touch!
The Android app can be set to cache ahead so if you lose a data signal your music is still there.
This combined with WoL magic packets means I can remotely turn on my home PC and have instant access to gigabytes - nay, terabytes - of media.
Take THAT iCrap! (Actually, there's iOS clients too, though they'd have trouble with the flash video....)
one of my favorite apps.
love the app, but why? dd-wrt router, vpn setup, network shares... my phone sees it as if i got 1TB sdcard

cool, i bet you'd rather me have access to your subsonic server than your network shares.
there's 25 or so of my friends that have access to my Subsonic with bitrate settings etc, its incomparable.
i have an apple & an orange if you want to debate their similarities.
Yeah, a network share is cool and has it's advantages, but this is something completely different.
On the fly transcoding and cache ahead are huge - especially for drives through the mountains where data is slow / non-existent.
I really like being able to give anyone access too.
Drdrewdon, do you know if it's possible to set up user-level access control? Ex. User a can see all folders but user b can only see one folder?
There arn't user rights yet, but its a common request from what I see.
You can also get gap-less playback on your droid by creating a new transcoder for ogg with a single step 'oggenc --quiet --quality=9 -o - %s'. Then set the player for your doid to use only that transcoder. Now you are streaming ogg instead of mp3.
Cant get this app to connect for some reason. Anyone have any setup instructions?

can't connect to your own subsonic server? explain what you've done so far
I Figured it out, I had to change some of the settings on my router. The app is great but Im liking Audio galaxy a little bit better, besides the fact there is no options to add users.

Help....want to stream video from PC to N7

I want to be able to stream varies video files (avi, mkv, etc) to my N7 from my PC while away from home. Tried looking to see if this was already talked about but couldn't see anything.
Tried Plex however unsuccessful in setting it up? Any links or suggestions or best app's or tutorial on setting this up? UPnP/DLNA or FTP (old school way)? Plex or BubbleUPnP or something else?
FYI....running Windows 7 x64 at home. Have N7 connected to my i9100 most of the time. Have newer Netgear WNDR3700-100NAS Wireless Gigabit Open Source Router at home. Also my N7 is not rooted.
Thank you in advance.
Have you tried orb or playon?
Have you tried VLC, or XBMC?

If you enable file sharing you can use es file explorer and dice player to stream from your PC but it has to be on the same network. I've been watching movies this way since I got my nexus and it works great. There's no lag or having to wait for buffer.
You should just go download qloud video server and then thank me after... I guarantee its exactly what you're looking for... easy to setup and works perfect ... seriously don't know why more people don't recommend this!
Best solution to the OPs question is Plex
Or dice VPN
Dice player will play videos over a shared folder.
Did you try Zumocast?
I'd say Plex too, don't really like Orb's interface, but if the OP was having issues setting up Plex (a very easy process in my experience) I would think that they will have similar issues with any other service.
Does Subsonic handle video? If so, Subsonic = instant win... I use it for music. Couldn't ask for much more than what Subsonic offers.
Note: It's free for basic use, but for mobile use you need to donate a few bucks to unlock a key to use it with mobile devices as well. I donated like 15 bucks. EASILY worth it. I hook up my N7 to some 2.0 speakers on my deck and stream from my server downstairs.
I use BSplayer stream video from NAS

i dunno about App, but the old school way is indeed the easiest way. set up FTP server in ur PC, open and forward FTP port from your router, use ES File Explorer to add the WAN IP address as FTP server.
of course, 2 issues:
- if u got Dynamic IP (standard home cable/satellite broadband) then u need to update it every now and then
- i cant guarantee it can "stream" if using a FTP setup.
the alternative is of course using ur router, setup a Virtual server, and share the windows machine. if u set it up securely and use the correct ports, then it could be the better solution. but im not sure how to configure it with Netgear.
Dice player have built in
Smb , ftp , http support with external sub files.
No rooting is required.
Plex is fairly simple to setup. Need to make sure you UPnP on your router, if not then set the default port in the firewall on the router for the app. After you install, launch your browser or right click the icon in the task tray. Web address is http://computerIP:32400/manage. You will then tell it where your TV, Movies, Pictures, and Music folder is and let it sit for awhile depending so it can gather all the metadata.
I have been using Plex for over a year now and it just keeps getting better. I use it on all my devices when I am out and use Plex Media on my desktop connected to the TV or stream to xbox on my office TV.
Also create an account with plex forums and you can use it to log in in the web GUI and it will make it easier to connect to your N7 while out of the house.
If you have other question on setting it up, PM me and I'll try my best to help out.

I set this up yesterday and it works beautifully. It's supposed to be for Motorola phones but you can get a patched version from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1276410
Get the Patched-Rotation file
Setup is as easy as making an account and logging in to it on your PC and device. You also have to download the PC software from the zumocast site. I've tested this away from home and it works great. Streams videos, music, and basically opens any file up (like documents, pictures..etc)
Plex is best...
Ps3 media server/universal media server->mediahouse->dice or MX player and your good to go

never mind I forgot you mention away from home

Xbmc issue

I have numerous devices on my network running xbmc with no issues at all. I am using a windows 7 based machine as a media server with typical smb shares. They work fine on all of my other devices which are windows, android, and Linux based. I rooted and installed xbmc on the fire TV with no problem. For the life of me I can't get the fire TV to see anything when I select smb. I have tried manually entering the shares which kinda works but it does not find all of the media and nothing will play. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Another question may be is anyone using smb shares successfully? Should I just switch to Linux on the server and use NFS shares?

Smb shares works fine for me. Have a networked SMB hard drive and a shared DVD drive from laptop. Can you browse to the shares or do they not show up at all?
I'd never understood the issue with XBMC and network shares - until now. And now what I understand isn't a resolution or anything, but what a pain this is when it stops working.
I had solid SMB mounts for a long time. And then last night, all the network shares timed out continuously. Other devices in the house have no problem with them. This box can ping the media server, vice versa.
I also run NFS, and the DVD player can see the NFS shares, so I thought i'd try that. The fire TV NFS client can see the NFS server and the sharenames, but cannot get into any of them.
I don't know what's happened, I did not get an OTA and am still rooted, but suddenly neither SMB nor NFS work on the firetv. My DVD player can do the NFS mounts flawlessly. It's too bad, as this basically makes the FTV worthless to me.
Unfortunately, since there's no way I know of to truly reset the device, I'm not sure how to proceed. I've tried rebooting, I've tried updating to the latest launcherish XBMC, I've tried resetting the system and reinstalling XBMC - nada, except I was reminded how much I hate the setup video.
I'm well past the 100 bucks worth of annoyance at this point. The WDTV Live Plus never, ever gave me this kind of trouble. It couldn't stream Amazon video and at first this box seemed so much more capable but now? Meh.
I can't even see the smb shares unless I manually enter them and then they quickly lose the password or quit working. I have wanted to switch to NFS for a while so may try that. Just blows my mind when the server and my other devices have been working for over 2 years through numerous versions of xbmc, windows, Linux, android, etc. I set my cheap android box up in 20min and the fire TV was looking the same until this happened. Does anyone have any ideas on stuff to try?

Have you tried using ipaddress in place of server name? If that works, should probably make server ip static.

Server IP is static and yes. Same results. The fire TV should be able to see the shares without me manually entering them anyway

Mysql xbmc shared database

I currently have a fireTV, two fireTV sticks, and a Raspberry pi all running XBMC (my plan is to replace the Raspberry pi with one of the sticks eventually). Each of these units currently keeps it's own database which makes them a pain to keep in sync. What I would like to do is move to a shared mysql database to keep track of my library, watched status, etc.
I know this can be done on a computer which is always on, but I would rather not have a PC running constantly just for this purpose. Is there any way to host the mqsql server on the FireTV (which is always on anyway)? Has anyone tried this?
I tinkered a little bit just trying to get it to work on my tablet using Ulti Server but could never get XBMC to successfully connect to the database.
My other option is to try and host it on my RT-N66U asus router as explained here: http://www.hints.dk/en/2013/03/13/mysql-server-on-rt-n66u-or-rt-ac66u-for-shared-xbmc-library/ but that requires a bit more modification than I really wanted to do.

1. Where is your media coming from? If a NAS or HTPC... why not host MySQL on there?
2. If you plan to retire the Pi, host the DB on there. This isn't as speedy as some would like but I haven't researched this recently and only had a 256mb Pi at the time.
3. If you have a hosted domain, it most likely comes with a MySQL DB (or several). You could use this option but again, it may not be the fastest due to latency.
3. From my experience on the Windows side, the problem with your UtilServer DB is probably related to a firewall. You need to figure out how to let Android openly communicate on port 3306.

Thanks for the response!
1. Media is hosted by the RT-N66U wireless router. It can be modified to host MySQL but it requires some hacking to make it happen. Doable but not as elegant as I would like.
2. Yes, I considered that option but I have another project in mind for the pi. Still might go this route though.
3. No hosted domains
4. Certainly a possibility, although when I tried it I had the UtilServer DB and SPMC on the same tablet and still couldn't get a connection using the localhost address. I don't remember the exact errors I was getting (this was a few weeks ago).
This is actually a really interesting question. I know that there is android software to host a MySQL server, but never considered sideloading it on the FireTV for XBMC/Kodi library until now. I'm going to look into this prospect this weekend. I'll report my findings.
I haven't tested this being hosted from the FireTV yet, but I can confirm that I can host the database for Kodi on Android via my phone. I used Servers Ultimate Pro to do it and was able to connect from my phone as well as from the FireTV. I'd assume that it would work just fine from the FireTV as well, but still need to confirm.

No root. No HDD usage. Alternative?

So, I cant root the fire tv obviously and I bought it so someone i know can use it offline to watch offline movies instead of dvds. No way around this problem? I sideloaded KodiTV but its no use since I cant even use a flash or HDD
Can you sideload ES Explorer and connect to an SMB share on a NAS or Windows/Linux Server? it sounded like some people are doing that.

Is there a PC with spare hard drive space on the same network?
Kodi/SPMC/XBMC has the ability to make an SMB connection to a windows file share and play files from it. I do this with my Fire TV (box) and Fire TV stick to connect to my Win2012 server with many hard drives in it (holding all my movies converted from my blurays).
If a "Browse Master" isn't available on the network you wont be able to "browse" to find the computer and shared folder, and will instead have to manually use IP address and folder info for the "server" machine into Kodi/SPMC/XBMC when trying to setup the SMB connection. Extra info see -> http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=133624
Offline usage.
I have this Dane-Elec Media Streamer for hooking USB and SD cards that lets me connect to it through the FireTV's internet menu.
If you can sideload a matching app for one of these streamer doohickies, you should be able to connect straight to one.
There is one downside where it can stupidly auto-connect to a different remembered internet connection when you are using the streamer's connection.
I wonder if there is an offline cloud box for accessing files via "offline internet" or maybe even bluetooth?
She doesnt have a computer. I'm thinking I gotta keep this for myself since I got a few hard drives on my computer
There are quite a few Video Add-ons for XBMC/Kodi that make local storage a thing of the past. Between those and IPTV configs, you may not even notice. Although, most USA ISPs don't like streaming only households. Overages, etc may hurt the pocketbook...
