[HOW TO] Update to Stock HTC Sense Lollipop when phone is S-ON and custom ROM - T-Mobile HTC One (M8)

I want to share my experience because I found many persons asking how to do it, just like me.
Warning!
The procedure of returning the T-Mobile HTC One M8 back to stock ROM has been tested successfully but let us warn you that it involves risk. Proceed at your own responsibility. Remember, you have been warned!
Do a backup, all your data will be wiped.
1) First of all, turn the *** UNLOCKED *** bootloader status of your phone to *** RELOCKED ***. This is how to do so: connect your phone to computer and reboot it into Bootloader Mode. Launch a command prompt window, type the following command and press Enter key:
adb reboot bootloader
2) When your One M8 enters the Bootloader screen, highlight the FASTBOOT option using the Volume keys and select it by pressing the Power button.
Then launch the command window again and type the following command to relock the bootloader:
fastboot oem lock
3) Now scroll to Reboot Fastboot option and select it. Once your device begins showing *** RELOCKED ***, you can start using the RUU. If you device has already a LOCKED bootloader, you can skip the above steps.
4) While your M8 is still in Fastboot mode, run the RUU_M8_UL_L50_SENSE60 as administrator, you can download it from THIS LINK.
I found the original instructions here and i downloaded the update from here.
NOTE: When I run the RUU it takes like 20 minutes to complete the installation, take your time.

can I still unlock this boot loader and instal my custom roms after this with unlocking methods used before?

Yes, using the HTC dev website methods.
Also there was honestly no reason to make this post this info is already available on multiple websites including our beloved xda just saying, don't hate me.
Aforementioned Info

does this erase any data? Should I restore stock recovery first?

[tutorial] How to Unlock Bootloader and Root your Htc One V

Here is a simple tutorial on how to unlock bootloader and root your Htc One V.
Do this AT YOUR OWN RISK and I don't guarantee it will work on all Htc One V (but successfully done on my Htc One V (PrimoU)).
First: Credits go to:
1) paulobrien for his tools & guide
2) bagofcrap24 for the stolen unlocking bootloader tutorial..
Second: It is good to have official RUU for your Htc One V version. You can find the official RUU HERE(credit : JMZ) & HTCSync in case you something goes wrong and you need to revive your One V.
Or make a nandroid backup after you successfully unlock the bootloader. How ? Read further below. So read fully before you attempt to unlock bootloader and rooting.
Third: the tutorial
Unlocking Your Bootloader
Note: After doing unlocking bootloader, all your data/apps are gone so make a backup to your PC first.
You will need to run the initial setup again.
1. Go Here "http://www.htcdev.com/" and create yourself an account on HTCDEV.
2. Download These Fastboot Files
3. Make a new folder on your C: drive called fastboot.
4. Extract The Zip downloaded in step 2 to the new folder
5. Go Here http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/ and select "All Other Supported Models" and "then begin unlock bootloader"
6. Yes, Tick both Boxes, Proceed
7. Skip up to step 8 as we have all we need for the first 7 steps
8. Power off your phone by holding the power button down for 5-7 seconds (the three keys will flash a few times then it will power off)
9. Hold volume down button, the device will boot to HBOOT
10. Select Fastboot With Volume+or- then press Power once (you'll be in fastboot mode)
11. plug your phone into your PC and open a Command Prompt.
(windows XP - Click Start > Run > type CMD in box then press OK
(Windows 7 - Click Start > type CMD in search box then press Enter)
12. cd to your folder where we put fastboot files cd c:\fastboot
13. type this into your command prompt window fastboot oem get_identifier_token
14. select & copy the text as per step 9 on the HTCDev website
15. paste your identifier token into the box at the bottom and submit
You Will Very Shortly Receive an email from HTCDev with a link to the second part of the instructions and your "Unlock_code.bin" attached
16. download the "Unlock_code.bin" from the email and save it to the same folder that we extracted fastboot files to in step 2
17. type this into your command prompt window fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin
18. The Display Will change on your phone, press Vol + to accept and power to confirm.
Congratulations You Have Successfully Unlocked Your Bootloader
UPDATE: Read the IMPORTANT note added below
Rooting with Superboot for GSM Device (Primo U)
1. Download r1-primo-superboot.zip to your computer and extract in any directory.
2. Download the modded boot.superboot.img
3. Replace the boot.superboot.img in the folder that you extracted just now (r1-primo-superboot).
Or download one of the Superboot that relevant to your device HERE
4. Power off your phone by holding the power button down for 5-7 seconds (the three keys will flash a few times then it will power off)
5. Hold volume down button, the device will boot to HBOOT
6. Select Fastboot With Volume+or- then press Power once (you'll be in fastboot mode)
7. Connect your phone to PC
8. Double click ‘install-superboot-windows.bat’
Rooting with Superboot for CDMA Device (Primo C)
1. Download r1-primo-cdma-superboot.zip to your computer and extract in any directory.
2. Power off your phone by holding the power button down for 5-7 seconds (the three keys will flash a few times then it will power off)
3. Hold volume down button, the device will boot to HBOOT
4. Select Fastboot With Volume+or- then press Power once (you'll be in fastboot mode)
5. Connect your phone to PC
6. Double click ‘install-superboot-windows.bat’
Once it complete, the phone will reboot on its own. In app drawer you will see a SuperSU icon, click on it and update SU binary then you are done with rooting your Htc One V.
You can try any app with root access to confirm it is working.

IMPORTANT
As some people forget to make a nandroid backup for their stock ROM, after they successfully unlocked their device,
when a soft brick happens, it will be a big problem to be back on stock when they are unable to find the official RUU for their device.
So make sure, after successfully unlocked your device, don't do anything else yet, flash the CWM recovery and make a nandroid, make nandroid and nandroid of your stock ROM.
Download the Recovery for GSM Device:
CWM 5 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28153112
Direct download link : http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-5.8.4.5-primou.img
CWM 6 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1871243 (the latest version as at 05 Sep 2012)
Download the Recovery for CDMA Device:
CWM - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1749798
How to make a nandroid backup ?
Once the CWM recovery installed:
Press power once (to go to hboot)
press volume down/up to navigate the menu to RECOVERY, press POWER once
Once in the RECOVERY menu:
click backup and restore
click backup
the backup process is running. It will be a few minutes to complete.
once complete, check whether the backup is successful
click backup and restore
click restore
you will see your backup files, e.g: 2012-06-12.0.13.04
click Go Back or use the back button
click reboot system now to boot your device
once fully booted, mount your sdcard to PC, browse to \clockworkmod\backup and copy the 2012-06-12.0.13.04 folder to your PC as a second backup in case something is wrong with your sdcard.
2012-06-12.0.13.04 is an example only, you will get a different no.
Alternatively, you also can use TWRP recovery:
GSM version - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721749
CDMA version - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1764183
Now you are ready to do the rooting process.
Once your device is rooted, you are free to do whatever you want to do with your device, to flash a custom ROM, a custom kernel... whatever.
If soft brick happens and there is no official RUU, a stock nandroid backup may helps you
It doesn't work !!!!
It stucks at -waiting for device- in
11. type this into your command prompt window fastboot oem get_identifier_token
It works perfectly when s off and root. But why cant i gain root access when i already have SU app?
I tried to update the SU but it failed on gaining root access and busybox list.
When i used root uninstaller app, it asked me for adb access which i dunno. What do i have to do?

I don't see why rooting is a development issue. Development is for, well, software development like ROMs and recoveries, etc. Rooting is required to develop, but isn't development per-se.
I am planning on buying this phone.
I just have a few questions.
What is S-off and S-on?
Also, what is RUU?

I just give a basic explanation:
S-Off - security off - you can change everything including hboot partition layout, radio, system, data & recovery
S-On - opposite of the above, all cannot be change (which normally with a locked bootloader)
S-On + unlocked bootloader - you can change only system, data & recovery
RUU - ROM Update Utility - and exe file which consist all the OS files to be installed to the phone.

We have to wait until a developer finds an exploit.
To root, it is mandatory to have S-OFF?
Can I just make the root without the S-OFF?
Im here again:
How can I make S-OFF in my HTC One V, the HTCDev teaches seeks to remove the battery, but the HTC One V has internal battery (you can not remove)?
Someone who has made S-OFF on your HTC One V, could you help me?

You cannot do restore factory settings when you moved some system apks out from nand.
In order to flash a RUU:
1) you need an official RUU for your device.
2) you have htc usb drivers installed on PC.
3) relock the bootloader
in fastboot mode type fastboot oem lock
4) flash RUU
Do you have some kind of note of your actual software version number ?

Maybe I have to push system files again with adb?

[supertool] [CWM 5.0.2.8] Yet Another Root Guide

I know there are quite a few root guides out there but I just wanted to share exactly how I rooted my Wildfire S and installed CWM Recovery
1.
First things first: is your bootloader unlocked or S-OFF? To find out, turn off your phone, then hold in the vol- button and while holding it in, press the power button. Do not let go of volume down until the bootloader menu appears. It should say at the top LOCKED or UNLOCKED and/or S-ON or S-OFF. If it does not say either S-OFF or UNLOCKED, you will need to unlock your bootloader before you can root the device so proceed to step 2. Otherwise, skip to step 3.
2. (Bootloader Unlock)
Warning: this step voids your phone's warranty!
Head over to HTCdev and register an account. Then click the Unlock Bootloader button on the main page. It will walk you through all the steps to unlock your bootloader. Nothing to add to their instructions really. If you get really stuck here's a video guide
3. (Root)
There are several root methods but I chose to use htc supertool v3 which you can get here
Credit to frigid for this tool. The tool is not mine.
Extract the zip file that you should have downloaded from that thread. If you didn't download it, do so.
Open the SuperTool.exe file in the extracted folder.
You should be confronted with a terminal window with this text:
Code:
@eFrigid on Twitter for updates

6 Relock bootloader
7 De Sense (Disables Sense DOES NOT DELETE)
8 Re Sense (Re-Enables Sense)

10 Unroot
reboot Reboot your device
Make a choice or hit ENTER to quit:
Press 1 to prep with zergRush and press enter. then when it comes back to the main menu, press 3 and then press enter. This will attempt to root your device. If it doesn't work, try using option 2 instead of option 1. If it still doesn't work, try both again. Hopefully your device will be rooted by this point.
4. (Install CWM Recovery)
There are two ways I'm going to go over to achieve this, the ROM Manager method and fastboot method.
BTW CWM Recovery is something you need if you're gonna flash any ROMs or mods or anything really..
ROM Manager Method
Go into the Play Store and search for "ROM Manager" (the developer is called clockworkmod)
Install the app and open it.
There will be an option to install recovery. Use it.
It will install CWM recovery in a few seconds.
To get into recovery mode, boot into bootloader (you should know how to do this by now) and choose recovery in the menu and it will boot into recovery
Fastboot Method
Find a recovery image. (Make sure it's for the right device!)
Boot into bootloader then select fastboot in the menu (with the phone plugged into PC). You should know how to get into fastboot by now, anyway.
Open a command prompt in the same directory that you have the recovery image in. (If you don't know how to do this then it's a good time to learn how to use Google )
Use this command:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
If the recovery image was not called recovery.img then type the actual name. It will always end with .img
It will flash teh recovery :silly:
The End.
Please say if I missed anything out. I wrote this 100% from memory
A clean guide.....but the only problem is that there are too many of them....and they all have been buried down after sometime....leading to noob questions again

[GUIDE] How to revert back to stock Android. VERY EASY!

For the last two days I tried to revert my HTC One V back to stock android. As in, the way I got it when I first booted it up. I experienced that this progress was pretty difficult. Maybe this was because I was used to the AOSP niceness of Google's LG NExus 4 or because HTC made it very hard to say the least to downgrade/upgrade to their own stock ROM.
I may not have the original sources for all files because I deleted some original .zip files and only have the extracted files.
First off, I wouldn't do any of this if you have important files on your device, I wiped everything from my phone a dozen of times in the process and it didn't care because I didn't had any important files on their.
Alright, so what we want to achieve is to get to the latest version of HTC's RUU version "2.22.401.7". The RUU I could find was "2.22.401.1" so we're gonna have to d/l some OTA's later on via our device if everything is set up.
So obviously everyone who is trying to revert back has somewhere unlocked their bootloader by doing
fastboot oem get_identifier_token
and
fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin
Please remember this: ANY RUU will fail every single time if your device is LOCKED. It will ONLY work if it's unlocked or relocked.
So first off what we gonna have to do is relock/unlock our device. You can relock your device by going into fastboot[1] mode and running the following command:
fastboot oem lock
Myself have expierenced an error that told me it "FAILED". Please reboot your bootload:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
And check the locked status at the top. If it says "RELOCKED", succes! If it didn't, retry the command above.
Next, we're relocked so we can run the RUU. Please look at the text file at the RUU source [2] for the download links. In this .zip file are the files inside the RUU wizard. You can run the wizard by executing "ARUWizard.exe" and you can view the contents of the actual ROM in "rom.zip extracted" and you can find the original ROM in "rom.zip". Since these are the files the wizard will be using (except rom.zip extracted folder) please do not touch them.
Alright, so we've got the extracted files of the RUU and we're ready to update. Please boot your phone in fastboot mode and connect it to your computer via USB. Now run the "ARUWizard.exe" file and let it update. I couldn't think of a situation where this could go wrong, so please ask below if you face any problems.
The wizard will flash stock radio, recovery andsystem.img (the actual ROM you all know) so by doing this you lose your custom revovery.
When your phone boots up you've gotta go through 3-4 updates till it's on "2.22.401.7".
I recommend not flashing a custom recovery right away because when you install/download OTA updates it isn't able to flash it right. In the meantime if you want root[3] use this command:
adb install -s supersu.apk
When you're on the latest version you have to unlock your bootloader, otherwise you cannot flash a custom recovery or kernel or whatever. You can do this via HTC[4]. I think there are enough guides on how to do this, but in short:
- create an account with an legitimate email address
- Select "all other supported devices" from the list
- follow on screen instructions.
Seriously everything is on there, HTC made it really easy.
If you want to install a custom recovery I recommend using TWRP[5]. Please flash TWRP by booting into fastboot and running the following command:
fastboot flash recovery twrp_recovery.img
Troubleshooting
There isn't really a lot that can go wrong if you do this. But when you're stuck on a screen or you think your device is "bricked" or stuck in a bootloop do these things:
- First off, hold the power and volume down button till the device goes down. If it's down, release the buttons and then hold the same buttons again till you're in bootloader
If that doesn't work do either of these commands (make sure your device is connected via USB, hehe)
Make sure fastboot and/or adb is working first:
fastboot devices
adb devices
If fastboot is working:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
If ADB is working:
adb reboot bootloader
adb reboot recovery
If you have any questions, please ask me. I did a dozen of things these two days, I may forgotten something because I did a crapload of things all at once.
Cheers!

Before flashing CWM recovery, you have to unlock the boot loader, using the command:
Code:
fastboot oem unlock
Then press Volume Up in phone to confirm.
Now you can flash.
Note: Unlocking bootloader formats the User data (/data partition), such as apps and other settings. Take a backup using Titanium Backup Tools, then proceed
Your recovery partition is locked.
1. Make yourself a developer (go to Settings -> About Phone -> Tap on Build until developer
2. In Developer options turn on Enable OEM unlock
3. Flash the new recovery, don forget to "fastboot oem unlock"
4. Important: don't allow phone to complete a normal reboot after flash. When rebooting, press Vol Up + Vol Down + Power to enter CWM recovery directly. Otherwise the stock recovery will replace CWM again.
When I type the command "fastboot oem unlock" and press enter, my phone displays a long-ish disclaimer text about the dangers of unlocking the bootloader, ending with the instruction to use Volume Up key to confirm ("YES, unlock...") or the Volume Down key to cancel ("NO, don't unlock..."). Pressing Volume Down works as expected: the line "returning to fastboot in 3secs" is displayed, followed by a return to fastboot. But pressing Volume UP seems to have NO EFFECT at all!! NOthing highlighted, no change in the screen, pressing power afterward does nothing. It is not a hardware problem of the Volume Up button either -- Volume Up/Down keys work in normal apps and in recovery mode just fine.
I was hoping that perhaps it just silently succeeded, but when i next try to flash the CWM recovery img, I still get 'sending recovery' OKAY but 'writing recovery' FAILED??
what do I do to get the volume UP to work while the phone in this mode??
BTW the phone is a Rook 4G phone from EE here in the UK. This is apparently the same as a ZTE Blade 3 A410 phone with carrier branding.
THANKS in advance for any help!

Absolutely identical experience here with the Alcatel One Touch Pop 3 - 5015x. I was following this tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/and...lcatel-one-touch-pop-s3-t3060092/post65430049, had a problem with the OEM, solved it by finding the top post on THIS thread and now I have the exact same issue as you two gentlemen. Any help would be appreciated, cus the phone seems bricked as it is. It's stuck in boot loop and receiving no input.
Thi is NOT the exact same issue as we have: you are stuck in a boot-loop; we have a version of fastboot which seems to have disabled the volumeUp button, thereby making it impossible to confirm our request to unlock the bootloader. e can only press VolumeDown (which cancels our request to unlock the bootloader).
i posted at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=65462453&postcount=48 a suggestion for how to proceed in your case: just use SP Flash tools to reinstall a stock recovery image, and then use that recovery to install a complete stock ROM.
,BTW, Sir, when you say:

note that the solution given in the top post of this thread is designed for Android One devices, and your Alcatel One Touch does NOT appear in the list of supported devices for that "fix." can't say it's entirely surprising that you would get into a bootloader problem if you apply top your phone a bootloader unlock solution for some random other platform!! LUck would not likely be with you when doing that.

Go in bootloader mode, connect your phone to your computer and tell me what do you get if you tape in your console "fastboot devices"
I want to know the number before fastboot.. mine is strange and maybe not the original

Take a backup using Titanium Backup Tools, then proceed

really thanks:angel:
I can't
I have an error installing a ROM, partition x not allowed.
I can't go in recovery mode + I can't open my phone to enable usb debugging.
I don't have root & and I don't have my OEM unlocked.
How can I install my ROM for Asus Zenfone GO ZC500TG? :'( :'(
Anyone, please?!!
ADB devices allowed?
I have the same problem, but i just resolve it now. First, i've connected my phone in normal mode, then i opened cmd and wrote: adb devices, and a popup displayed in my phone to allow adb debug. I allowed and reboot to bootloader and follow all steps to unlock bootloader.
I also have problems, my phone is a polaroid turbo c4 plus and i cand get through the setup, so i can't install cwm and i am searching for methods to recover it, it's pretty hard since theres nothing online about it

Lots of problems trying to unlock the Bootloader

This E9+ is my fifth device to root, and the first one in which I've encountered issues.
I'm following this guide that is specific for my phone here on xda.
First step is unlocking the bootloader, for which I'm sent to the htcdev website.
First step there is to reboot to Bootloader or on some devices, Download mode. No problem so far.
Next is to select Fastboot. from the menu. There is no Fastboot. Some Google-fu suggests I reboot my phone, go to Settings>Power>Fastboot and check the box. There is no Fastboot in that menu. I also checked in the Developer Tools menu. HTCdev suggests enabling OEM unlocking in the Developers Tools menu, however there is no OEM unlocking in that menu.
I had tried a few other things as well.
Usually rooting is as easy as pie in the sky due to the wealth of information online, but I have been stuck at Step 0 for days now.
If anyone could help, I would greatly appreciate it.
You DON'T select fastboot. fastboot is a command that you enter with a combination of commands to do certain things like flashing the stock rom or a custom recovery.
boot to the bootloader mode
choose download mode
then with the use of fastboot files enter the commands that you need
i am trying to unlock the boot loader of my E9x as well, after choosing boot to download mode, the screen displayed "This build is for development purposes only. Do not distribute outside of HTC without HTC's written permission. Failure to comply may lead to legal action". please help me
