No love for the LG - T-Mobile LG G3

I love my LG G3 and the pictures it takes, but I would like a little bit more. So I rooted my phone and love the roms that it offers. I just think that every single rom out there is the same with just a different name. All of them are Lollipop. At first I did like Lollipop, but now I'm bored of it. I do install different themes to give it a different look but it still looks the same. All Lollipop roms looks the same and I use one that the Dev updates all the time, which is awesome that he updates and keeps us wanting more. But, I think of unrooting my phone and jumping over to either the new Samsung when it comes out or the new HTC One M9.
I know when the update comes to the LG it'll be just the same. I've seen videos of pretty much nothing new added or anything upgraded. I hope that the LG continues to grow. I'm on t-mobile so I don't have that "Theme" option on my phone so I can't change themes if my phone is un-rooted. We'll see in about a week when these new phones pop up. I will miss the camera on my phone but I didn't get a phone for the just the camera.

I want this 20 seconds of my life back

Okay??? Cool story bro. Don't expect much of a change with the newer phones coming out. Seems like you don't even know what you are looking for. You can theme a phone without being rooted. Several programs out there. One is advertised right on this site. Themer

I do like theming my phone, I've noticed using themer that it won't work for a rooted Lollipop rom, unless they fixed that. I haven't used it in about a couple of months. I sometimes use launchers but whenever I update the rom I would have to install all those apps again and again. So I got tired of doing that so I don't use launchers. I'm leaving my phone plain for now and holding off for the HTC I miss the whole Sense thing.

You want the new m9 or Sammy well you're not giving the G3 a fair battle. If you miss the HTC so much then switch don't hesitate. When the G4 comes out it will blow the m9 and Sammy to dust. If you want to customize so much might as well get a 1+. Stop complaining the G3 is the s**t

I bought a GS1 when it hit the shelves in 2010, paid cash for it. Stayed with Sammy as well - GS2, GN1, GS4 (still my daily driver) and my wife's Note 4. As with any phone, there's a lot to like... and stuff you don't. Recently, discovered you can't get past the bootloader on the Note 4 (Bell). My wife doesn't care, but that would drive me crazy.
Still, after playing with her's for a few months, I still prefer my G3 to a Note 4 or a GS5. It's the perfect balance between those 2, and really not much bigger than my GS4. And the screen is comparable to the Note 4's QHD display.

Yes I can relate to you. Never tried an LG phone but after having my G3 for months now I can honestly say it's the best phone I've ever had. With tweaksbox and a couple of other xposed mods this phone has proven worthy. Unless Sammy or any other manufacturer comes out with a game changer the G series is going to be my go to phone. Can't wait for the G4.

The G3 is great don't get me wrong. I'm just picky and wish it can do more. Majority of the LG apps are junk. I do give it to them the camera is really awesome. I think I just get bored fast with these phones. I like to give my phone a different look each time. I know rooting allows me more freedom. I'm a gadget fanatic and just wish for more features or the flexibility of theming the dialer and messaging apps without rooting. If the G4 would come out it'll be great to have those features.

I don't know much about the 1+ but I'm hearing lots of good stuff on the new to come out GS6 I'm probably going to hold off until this phone comes out and then see reviews. I went back to stock on my phone and I do miss stock but I don't have that feature of "Themes" in my settings so I can't change the icons. I really don't like launchers, but I do on occasion use Themer.

There is no GPE G3.

Not possible right now
keep your eyes on this section of the forum
http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/development
and wait for someone to port the GPE or when the 5.0 leak.
T mobiles LG G3 is the first to get root, bootloader unlock and custom recovery. It will be the first to get ROMS like AOSP android. That's your best bet. If you can find someone in good standing and get it unlocked, it should work on several carriers. It's up to the development community and what they create. I don't know what I would have done without them.
With something like GPE, are we going to lose extra functionalities like knock on and phone movement functions (like putting to ear to answer, flip to silence calls/snooze alarm), etc?

Basically yes.
Stock Android is plain and devoid of features. That's why we all root and ROM our Nexus phones. Latest versions of Android are overrated when ROMs or skinned phones offer more out of the box.

You sell your G3 for $550, you buy a Nexus 5 for $300, you now have the cleanest version of Android and an extra $250 in your pocket.

And stock Android (or at least the Nexus version of Android) is still, by far, the best version available. Why do Nexus owners modify it? Because they CAN.... and it gives them an excellent framework on which to do so. Most everything you can do on ANY of these ROMs, you can find something that can approximate the same feature.... so you can pick and choose what you want. The UI isn't cluttered, screens aren't unnecessarily crowded. I had a Nexus 5 before I got my G3 and I can say, without hesitation, that I would replace the G3's stock ROM with AOSP the instant a fully functional one became available. When I first got my G3, I spent the better part of the first days of owning it doing my best to strip away the OEM stuff on there and 'Nex-ify' it.... Ideally, I'd have an AOSP-based ROM to work off rather than work around LG's stuff.
In fact, I'm going to try to build one for myself... I downloaded LG's D851 source code earlier to day actually (thank you LG for releasing the system and kernel sources). I'm not expecting this to be an easy task, not in the least... but the ONLY shortcoming that I can see in this phone is the software loaded on it, so if I can work around that, I'll be quite pleased.

Nexus owners modify their phones because stock Android leaves so much to be desired and it add functionality that mind blowingly isn't in stock — a fine example being quick settings that are actually quick (and customizable) and something as simple as showing the battery percent in the status bar.
And how do you figure that the UI is cluttered on the G3? How exactly is that so? The screens aren't necessarily crowded in the least bit. Visually, the Nexus 5 and G3 don't differ much outside of the default launcher (that most people change anyway regardless of which phone they're on) and the settings menu. I'd argue that the G3 presents the settings better since you can quickly jump to what you want thanks to them being tabbed. Aside from those, the differences are negligible because you'd only find yourself in apps beyond that. I'm not going to get my panties in a bunch of "bloat" that is easy to remove or otherwise easy to ignore.
There is literally nothing obtrusive about LG's UI here. People are just Nexus/Google obsessed. That is my opinion after owning a Nexus 4 and still owning a Nexus 5 and 7. I don't need to "Nexify" my phone because there is literally nothing that a Nexus has over the G3 except for being a download away from the Google camera and its ability to take photosphere photos.

The notification panel, like in touchwiz, is a hot mess. HTC, to their credit, left things be and themed the notification and quick settings panels, rather than smashing them into one. I hated that about touchwiz and I hate it here... thankfully, I was able to toss the worst with tweakbox.
The rest of the layout isn't horrible... just laid out awkwardly. Between tweakbox and the Now Launcher, things are pretty good now. I just prefer AOSP, visually. If you're fine with it, that's cool.
By the way, the Google camera, and photosphere, work on the G3.

How is that dumb? If he has the T-Mo version, he can sell it for more. Look at the link I provided. T-Mo's versions are selling for $550. So my original statement that he could sell it for $550 and have $250 left after buying a Nexus 5 is correct.
I didn't check AT&T prices because I did away with that worthless company last year. Still, even if he has an AT&T version, he can sell it for $450 and have $150 left in his pocket. My original point is valid either way.
Why the hell are you arguing with me about this? Is it just to be able to have an argument on the internet?

The notification panel is only as cluttered as the user makes it as any toggle in it is optional. A single line of icons with your most commonly used toggles first is not cluttered. I don't even need to scroll past the first five icons in my notification panel and I don't need the sliders either (though they do help if you want your notifications to start off lower to make them easier to select one handed). The stock Quick Settings are even more cluttered (a separate page of huge icons on a grid), so the Android L design will be a welcome and more useful refresh of the idea.

GPE ROMs have plenty of OEM features in them.

Tempted to upgrade to different phone?

I can't be the only one thinking about it with the lineup in 2015. The S6 Edge is sexy as hell but there isn't enough bang for the buck. HTC M9 is not even a contender this year (honestly HTC, you need to step it up). LG G4 sounds promising so far, although if LG somehow manages to screw something up in the specs/software, it's a long wait til the Note 5 and I'm not a huge fan of Touchwiz. I want to upgrade but my G3 is still pretty solid and I don't want to jump down below 5.5(ish) so I'm in limbo.
Anyone else thinking of upgrading? If so, which phone is tempting you?
No thinking about it, I will be getting the normal galaxy s6 next month. In my opinion you cant beat samsungs amoled screen and the exynos processor sounds amazing. Plus I like the idea of a fingerprint scanner over knock code now that it is touch not drag. I can live without removables, never needed to replace a battery and with 64 or more internal I wont need a sd. The G3 is a good phone but it already bores me, first phone I can say that about within the first year. I'll probably get some hate about this but my iphone 3g kept me happy longer. Sure that was my first smart phone back in 2008 but still... It was boring ios.

I agree on the G3 boring me part. My HTC DNA kept me interested longer than this phone did, for whatever reason. I was seriously considering jumping to the S6 or S6 Edge but I went to go check them out at Best Buy and neither of them amazed me. Sure their build quality is better than previous generations but nothing "wow"ed me and from what I hear, the battery life leaves much to be desired. Why Samsung went with 2500mAh, I have no idea. I can definitely live without removables too but not with a battery that small.
As much as i want to upgrade to the s6 edge i think i will hold off and see what LG has to offer. I like the G3 and have grown to like the buttons on the back of the phone as well as the knock to wake and sleep. Plus the g3 is the perfect size for me and the s6 is a tad smaller so ill wait for now.

The poor battery is from wake locks, the exynos processor Is 30% more efficient than the snapdragon 810 and the amoled screen takes much less power so after the wake lock issues are taken care of it should last just as long or longer than other flagships coming out.

The rumor mill is saying the g4 will be bigger. Personally the g3 is as big as I want to go with phones.
All in all we all have different tastes and the s6 is the flavor I'm digging right now. I guess we will see if I still think it looks tasty in a month.
Absolutely no Samsh_t for me whatsoever.
No root on Z3 stopped me from buying.
I may consider M9, but I'd like to see what G4 will be first.
Camera is a big thing for me and after having the Nexus 5, HTC M8, and a Samsung S5.... I am sticking with the G3 for a while longer. Lots of people talk about how great the Samsung S5 camera is, but I did a side by side comparison and everyone said the G3 pictures were the best. For the S6, I guess we'll see how that camera turns out. Plus, it's going to be hard to root.
Samsung is ****ing bloated all to hell and back. G4 looks like it could be much better than the s6.

You regret switching from the M8 to the G3? What do you like better on the M8?
And I agree with @dakpluto that the G4 sounds like it could be just as good, if not better, than the S6/S6E. Over-hyped phones in my opinion.

Honestly, my M8 was less laggy and just overall performed better. I know it's backwards, but in my experience, it was true. That and there's WAY more development for the HTC flagship phones on XDA than the G3.

I definitely agree on the development part. For whatever reason, LG G3 D851 had steady development but never exploded like my previous phones and seems to have dwindled now.
Thankful for what we got though!
Still loving my G3 on CM12.. Running great for me. As far as the S6 & M9 are concerned neither are worth the money (to me) to upgrade, and I even have an available upgrade. Ha. I bought my mint G3 non-contract with clean IMEI from a buddy for $275. He said it was too big of a device for him. I can't really justify an upgrade right now with the current offerings. S6 has Touchwiz (pardon me while I puke), antiquated home button & capacitive keys, no micro SD, and anemic battery. The M9 just didn't do it this year, and there's no word on a GPe version yet anyway. Safe to say I'll stick with my "Nexus 5.5" for now..

I'm actually grateful that it hasn't. Summer is coming and like many of you, I've spent more time then I care to remember flashing 3 different ROM's a day. I'm glad I don't have that issue anymore honestly.
I have the G2, and think I might upgrade to the G3. The G4 is the only other phone that has my interest also but won't be sold to probably late May. Plus, the G4 will be already on Lollipop and doesn't have an older KK bootloader to flash twrp on and might be stuck. Unless bump gets updated to work on the new Lollipop bootloader. What you guys think?

I would put down money saying the g4 will be bootloader unlocked on T-Mobile just like this g3.
It's no question for me. The G4 will be mine by pre-order. I have owned 1 Samsung phone and have had 5 Lg's including the G2 and 3 so it's only right to get the 4. Plus all of my other electronics are Lg so they sync up seamlessly.

Here's what I mean. The G3 on Lollipop can get root now. This allowed us to to modify the aboot with the previous kitkat version where we could bump the boot.img and recovery.img. This is only necessary if you want to flash custom roms, etc...
When the G4 comes out, it will come with Lollipop out of the box. It will probably be able to get rooted also with the latest exploit we have for root on Lollipop. But to get a custom twrp put on it to flash custom roms probably won't happen and will stay locked down on any carrier untill a new bump is developed that will work with the Lollipop aboot.img. The G4 doesn't have a previous version of Kitkat to do the hack that we do both on the G3 and G2 to make bump work.
My hunch is rom development on the G4 will not be possible until an exploit is found. Not sure we can put a G3 KK base aboot.img on a G4. Probably make it a brick.

I want to buy a T-Mobile G4. Some questions.

I am planning on going to the T-Mobile store later today to pick up a new G4, but first I wanted to ask some questions.
First, how long do you think I'll be waiting until I can root/flash ROMs/etc? I can live without these things for a while, but not forever!
Second, are the touchscreen and other issues something that I should seriously consider before getting this phone, or are they not that big of a deal? Are you guys all happy with the battery life?
So far I have not found any issues. It's been great on my end. Root will come.. It always does

I bought the T-Mobile version from eBay and received it on Saturday. So far no issues. The only gripe I have is slow charging while using the phone, but I just ordered some quick chargers so I should be good.

Thus far I am pretty happy with mine. I have noticed that it sometimes interprets a quick swipe as a press (thus opening an app I did not intend) and that, at least on mine, the digitizer may not go all the way to the edge of the screen. The leftmost 1/8" or so of the screen does not appear to register touch input. The right side isn't great either, but does seem better. I have not heard anyone else mention it though, so hopefully it is just my unit.
The only other gripe I have about it for now is that the viewing angle on the screen is pretty narrow. If you aren't looking at the display straight on it tends to get washed out.

You should never get a phone with the hope of it getting root. It's a bad idea. Root is getting harder and harder to achieve especially with dmverity implemented (Variants of the Note 4 after 9 months still do not have root and most likely never will without a bootloader exploit.) Bootloader exploits are almost non existent. Unfortunately the Tmobile version of this phone has a locked bootloader. You have to also think how long you will have the phone. Are you willing to wait half or more of it's usable life for root?
Get a phone with an unlocked bootloader, then you will never have to worry about it. Get the G4 815 for example or a nexus. I'm running 5.1.1 on my note 3 which would be impossible with a locked bootloader. Unlocked bootloaders will give you a much longer lifespan.
Happy with mine as well, although I'm using MetroPCS SIM on my phone.
My advice really, hold on to your Nexus 5. I think its gonna be a while before you see any ROMS or unlock the boot loader. I can't go back go my Nexus 5 cause this phone is awesome. It was an impulse purchase.
If ROMS and having the phone fully unlocked for development, please don't buy it. Also the more I use this phone, the more I believe that CM12.1 even when it does hit the LG G4, it will be not running at its full potential. Some little things that Stock has, better camera app, the tap lock and unlock screen, lock screen quick view, I mean little things that the CM12.1 Rom will be missing unless it has access to all the drivers of the phone.
I've never forgiven LG for what they Did to the G2X. This phone is awesome and will have best experience with the Stock ROM. Its Not AOSP, I wish it was but it won't.
Just wait. The main reason I got it was because removable battery and SD card. Can't wait for ZeroLemon to release the batter for LG G4.

Does the international version have all the same bands? I really want to have band 12. WiFi calling is also important to me.
I wanted to buy it through T-Mobile also so I could get it on EIP, but I could just finance it through my parents too.
Where can I buy the international version?
What do you think the probability is that the T-Mobile version will get rooted?
Thanks

I think root will come out by end of summer. If your wanting root soon then don't get the G4. Personally I just suck it up and deal with it.
I've even had horrible dirty bad thoughts of selling my G4 and waking up with a ZenPhone 2 in my hands. Should I pull the trigger? http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VWKKEYO/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_7YoIvbGEVV1H6

The stock ROM isn't awful. I came from SlimKat (based on CM) and there are definitely some features that I miss (Long press back to kill & double pressing back to switch the the most recent app mostly). But after installing Nova and reducing the DPI (via ADB) it is very workable. I am still holding out hope for root, but with how great the camera is I am not sure I would flash back to an AOSP ROM.

Touch issues are fixed by the keyboard update. Just be sure to do all the updates available and you should be right as rain there.
Battery life, I get 28+ hours while streaming Spotify through BT speaker for 12 hours, an hour voice calls, as well as a bunch of other goofing around on the device. It's not Note 4 life, but it's far better than any most other phones I've had.
Root/unlock will come, but it could be a while. Honestly, I like the phone well enough stock to not really be all that worried about it. While I'm sure that some devs could make this a bit snappier by debloating it, the stock UI really is pretty snappy and nice.
Camera is also fantastic. Fast action shots come out clear....close up shots have TONS of detail.

True, but I can't stay locked down without root forever while they wait for the bounty to get to $15k. I give it another few weeks for root, or I'm thinking of jumping ship to the ZenFone 2.

I had to pay a whopping $317 just to get my hands on a G4 through tmo's financing department. At least my monthly payments on it are very low.
But it will cost me $322 shipped for that ZenFone 2! I just want to play with it! lol
The phone is great, few things though, the root and subsequently the ROMs will be limited especially when compared to a nexus or even an S6, I have owned every nexus since the Galaxy nexus and I also owned the LG g3, which was a great phone, but development even to this day just never compared and that's mainly because of the carrier specific versions. So if you really like to try all kinds of different ROMs I suggest getting the Nexus 6 although I would say this phone is much better in my opinion but I miss and will continue to miss the variety of ROMs and customizations from my Nexus 6 as well as the screen and front facing speakers. Biggest benefit over the nexus 6 is the camera as well as the size/design/weight. As far as the battery I highly highly suggest using nova launcher instead of the stock LG and disable the LG apps if you can makes the battery life way way better, also get the free battery and SD card that will help to Haha.

I think it's more about the app.

Well said sir,
I screwed up and bought a Note 4 because of the deal I was getting ($400 outright), I immediately put away my flashaholics LG G2, and head to XDA only to see the At&t Note 4 has no ROMS, Kernels, or TWRP. Could not be more disappointed, a phone that should be a beast is hampered by no root. I would never touch the G4 or any other phone without full permanent root available in first 90 days of retail release. You are better off waiting to see what the new 2015 Moto X, Nexus ??, and OnePlus 2 will offer.

New VZW G4 Thread

I see that there are new carrier-specific groups. Pretty sweet! Root and bootloader unlocks are just around the corner.
How is everyone liking their VZW G4? Which device did you come from?
My previous device was the G2 and i loved it! The G4 is a great upgrade.
Don't forget to go put your name down to donate to the root and bootloader bounty! We owe a lot to these devs! :highfive:
*EDIT* - People keep asking about root and bootloader - The devs have found multiple ways to root and plan on releasing the first root method soon. They also say they are on track for a global bootloader unlock method. Stay patient and you'll have your root! Enjoy!

I came from the S6 and am liking the G4 very much. It wasn't much of a upgrade but the camera and manual mode really drew me to the G4 along with the removable battery and extSD. They are both great devices but in the end for something different I went with the G4.
EDIT: Great idea on the new thread structure, I was just thinking if they were going to do this.
EDIT 2: Back to the S6 for me... the G4 is too buggy for me. The one i just had had to be returned because of camera problems. It's a shame because I was really liking it until I took some outdoor photos.
Do you guys know how to take pictures in manual mode with raw format? How many other features are missing from our phones that the other carriers left alone?
Came from the G3, which I passed along to my father. I've been flashing it for him to feed my habit, but things are starting to look up for the G4 now.
Came from the S5 which I came from the S4..glad to be done with Sammy

Give me root or give me death! Coming from an HTC m8, Galaxy Nexus, Droid X.
I came from the S4 was pretty happy with that phone (actually I'm still happy with that phone) but the G4 just looked like a great upgrade. Can't beat the SD card slot and removable battery.
I had the GS4 before this, and Sam lost me with what they ditched in the GS6 design. The LG G4 has made me a very happy customer, and I marvel at its performance. Even better, I get an extra sd card and battery through that promotion!
I'm still rocking a G3 until the G4 gains root access.
The G3 has been the most boring phone I've had. I really enjoy flashing roms, but life is just too busy now. Which is why the G3 (and I assume the G4 will be as well) is so great. This phone with root and TweaksBox is perfect. I just froze a few things, added a few features and changed the colors and I have a stable device that has everything I want and need.
Came from G2. Missed having a removable battery and SD card. Love the camera, wish there was an option to change the resolution though. I didn't think I would like the curve as much as I do. A little put off by how much Verizon stripped the LG features too. All in all I'm just as happy as the day I got my G2. I was actually sold on the nexus 6, but I couldn't get over my love of the back buttons.

I had a G2, then a G3, and now a G4. In between these I had bought and returned a Droid Turbo, S6, One M8, and likely 1-2 more, but I always found myself coming back to LG.
I prefer the looks and ergonomics of the G3 the best out of all of them, it looked and felt much smaller than the G4, and looks more premium. The G4 has excellent performance and the best camera out of all of them though, so it makes up for it.
Umm hey guys, I have been trying my best to keep up with the root info on vzw g4, and last I heard, no luck and no bootloader unlock... Now, i dont want to jump the gun, BUT i have found a way to enable oem unlock. Is this something that has been accomplished yet? Or am I just all happy for nothing?
Everyone coming from the S4: I'm glad to see I'm not the only one ditching Samsung for their anti-user policies. I have owned every Galaxy phone 1-5. Not anymore. I've all but decided on the G4 for my upgrade next week. Excited about developments here!

Are you talking about the option in Developer options to Enable OEM Unlock? If so, that's old news. It doesn't mean you can unlock your bootloader. It's just one more hurdle before unlocking it.
Okay, just making g sure.. Back to rooting exploring.. Hey, but at least I should get some brownies for showing up right?? Where might one find a list of tried exploits or is there no such list?
I've been an android user since 2012, and this January something possessed me and I bought an iPhone 6 after having a really bad experience with the Droid Turbo. Then I realized what a monster I had become and I sold my iPhone and got the G4. Best decision I've made, and root is just going to make this great phone greater.

I took a greater look today and I found the option in the manual mode for raw format.
But I am starting to wonder if I have a defective phone. My battery life is horrible, I am only getting maybe two hours of on screen time and I dont use my phone most days. I have tried factory reset, not loading third party apps and the like but it still wont go above the 2 hour mark of on screen time.

I had the battery drain once. It was 3 hours for me, but it was only once.
They have the raw setting hidden in plain sight. I googled it.
Reviewers all out the G4 up against the S6 and its nearly as good as my older point and shoots. You need to check further into defects.

List of ROM's (getting new phone)

Hey all,
I'm almost ready to make my switch (from AT&T to Verizon). I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 that I put Candy5 ROM on it, and I really liked it, so I'm planning on trying that on an LG G4. I like the built in Privacy Guard and Ad Blocker....but as I read these forums it doesn't appear that Candy is developed for the G4. Advice...go with the G4 and see what other ROM's will be similar, or go with the G3 as I'm getting major discounts and a choice of phones? Thank you much.

TL;DR If you need a rom, wait, if you can get by without it, I highly suggest the G4.
At the moment, there are no ROMS for the Verizon variant of the LG g4. You can root and disable some of the bloat wear, but that is about it. We don't have custom roms because the bootloader is still locked and this prevents us from installing a custom recovery (such as TWRP) that would allow you to install a ROM (if one existed).
If your hopes are to put a ROM on the LG G4, then I suggest you wait until the bootloader unlock happens (if it ever does).
HOWEVER, and you can take this with a grain or cup or whatever of salt, I had a Note 3. The development on it was extremely slow because it too had a locked bootloader. We used a program called SafeStrap which allowed stock based ROMs to be installed and deployed to the device. Another option was FlashFire which allowed you to flash a ROM, backup, or update from inside the device. So there are options available to get a ROM on the device, if they existed, but they would have to be stock based.
Both of these tools helped to bring some ROMS to the Note 3, but never succeed in providing a CM based rom.
I am a heavy ROM freak. I love to flash new ROMs, everyday if I can get by with it, but I usually test them for a few weeks and document how the ROM functioned on the device.
Normally my major complaints (coming from samsung) would be the bloatware and the UI overlay that the mother company puts in, such as Touchwiz. But I think that LG did a REALLY good job of keeping the bloat down, the UI smooth and nonintrusive (the same CAN NOT BE SAID FOR VERIZON!!! Their bloatware is atrocious and they have ways of spying on your device to see what is running and if you are rooted), so even though LG did a great job Verizon screwed the pooch, as always.
I really enjoyed the stock elements that LG brought to the LG G4, and all in all I say its a good switch. The device has a good battery life with the stock battery, there are tweaks with Xposed to make the DPI a little more manageable, and the Phone, at least my phone, is super smooth with NO crashes to this day! If you can get by without a ROM, I think the G4 would be a good upgrade.
If you HAVE to have a custom ROM, I suggest you wait a little longer to see what happens with the Bootloader.
If you have the ability buy one of the H815 European versions of the G4, LG will allow you to unlock the bootloader on the device which will allow you to install TWRP, and there is already a ROM for it!
Hope this helps!
I love my G4, don't get me wrong, but I just pre-ordered a Moto X Pure (starts at $399 - no contract price) and it's 100% unlocked for all carriers. You can use it on AT&T (with full LTE) for now and bring it to Verizon when you're ready. We know that the bootloader is unlockable so as soon as people begin receiving these phones, XDA will blow up with development. And this phone will be on of the first to receive Android M since it's running pure (or close to it) Android.
Again, the G4 is an amazing phone and has quite possibly one of the best cameras available. But if you're looking for roms and development you're going to find yourself checking a bare forum every day just to respond to off topic posts. The MXP is the clear winner for development and it hasn't even started shipping yet.

My sentiments exactly. I couldn't wait for the G4. Slick design, leather back, great camera. A class act phone, but I don't want to keep waiting, and hoping, that the bootloader gets unlocked. The MXP has almost the same specs, and I know development will be huge. Gotta feed the need.

Sucks for you. Mine comes next Thursday.
As others have said, there are no ROMs out there currently for the Verizon G4.
No roms yet for the LG G4 but honestly the stock rom is golden. I've been a fan of stock LG ROMS since the G2. It's just about as close to vanilla as you're going to get.
Your best bet is to root, debloat, then install xposed, change your launcher to Google Now Launcher, then install the GEL xposed app (to change grid sizes, tweaks to launcher, etc).

Im also considering ditching my G4 for X Pure entirely because of the GUI and no root/roms. The GUI is not even close to vanilla. In fact from everything I've read on the forums the stock launcher was merely ported straight from the G3's KK ROM and doesn't include any/many updates for L. No support for native equalizer.
G4's battery life is mediocre at best, but receiving a free spare from LG and it being removable in general is a big plus. The display on the G4 is above average. If i could have an unlocked bootloader G4 with AOSP it would probably be perfect.

My Pure is being delivered today. I can't wait for the devs to get theirs, so I can start flashing ROMs again. It's been a long three months. :victory:

What color combination did you get? The Pure is really intriguing, but I want to see reviews first and make sure it gets rooted.

Just got the black/gray, and I'm not worried one bit about it getting rooted. With an unlockable bootloader I'm sure there will be mad development. I love my G4, but I'm not holding out much hope for the bootloader at this point.
Got my 32gb white/bamboo MXPE arriving on Friday... Goodbye G4! (Sorry to hijack the thread)
Getting rid of the g4 was hard, but the nexus 6 is working well at this point. I forgot how nice it is to have a working touch screen.

I'm tired of waiting also. The only thing that has prevented me from ordering the mxp so far is the possibility that the g4 pro is going to be an awesome phone. I'm sure it will have the same development issues as the g4 but if the spec rumors are close I might can live with it....lol
