[Q] having problems with unpacking root files. - Sprint Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The link below is of the site im talking about, i rooted my note 4 no problem before with this and im doing someone else phone. I downloaded the root files, go to extract and i get error and it wont do it. tried it 3 times on 2 computers same result. suggestions?
had to put a space before (.com) so it didnt show up as a link.
androidxda .com/root-samsung-galaxy-note-4-sm-n910p-sprint

Open the archive with 7zip or winwar and drag the files to an folder/location titled appropriately, like root or Odin under a main folder like SM-N910.

Thanks, i will try that when i get home. Just odd it worked fine when i did mine and now it says its corrupt.

No go with 7zip.

Chain Fire has a policy against redistributing his work. When I go to his thread and follow the link, I end up with the link below.
http://download.chainfire.eu/585/CF-Root1/CF-Auto-Root-trltespr-trltespr-smn910p.zip
Also, no md5 to verify a good download. I'd suggest the proper link from this thread and use a PC to download. Maybe the source or bad download is what you're dealing with? You did try open archive and select all, drag to suggested folder, right? Don't recommend extraction; just double-click Odin, once folder is created, to execute and pick the file as directed in the thread below.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=55865442

Thanks, i actually just found that about 30 mins ago and it worked great. saved that page for future use if i help anyone else to root there phone. been coming to this site for years very rarely do i have to post cause everything i ever need to know is on here somewhere.

are you by any chance extracting the file when you get it? if so, dont...the setup file you are talking about is an xml file...just leave everything in the cab file
take this file as it is (do not extract/unrar), and transfer the whole thing over to the phone and then run it.
still
I put it in as the rar/zipped file and clicked then it opened it and had a file that said start menu and windows I clicked on start menu and it said my tools clicked again and it said extras and then it had another one of those files with random words. So I went back to the windows file and it had the files etp excalibur 1-6 and then a file that said changer.I clicked on changer and it asked what language. After that it said for everything to take effect I need to reboot so I did that and nothing happend. Is there any way to but back on mobile 6.0 its already been like 5 hours of not being able to use the keyboard??

if you cant install a cab file then maybe you should switch back. its really this simple. copy the file (unmolested) to the phones \windows directory via activesync. then using resco explorer, browse to \windows on your phone and just click on the file..dont open, dont extract, dont pass go and dont collect 200$. it will install. then reboot and THATS IT. we have all done this 100000 times here so im not buying the fact that you are the one off case where it doesnt work.
look in the sticky's at the top of this forum for the wm6 rom

[Q] Error [240] file open This is STUPID

I Read and Read and Read. The surprising part is that, what I need the most there is no video nor any instruction to fix the problem.
I'm trying to flash a ROM on my tilt 2 GSM phone.
I have already HSPL it,
I did task 29 using RhodiumWAdvancedRUU.zip because I couldn't get regular task 29 to work.
Now I get a white screen with HTC on it and it doesnt pass it. So I enter bootloader and make sure that at the bottom it shows USB. (yes I do see SPL-0.85. OliNex)
Now I try to install the ROM and here is where the problem starts.
My ROM:
I dled NRG MAXSENSE ROM which is Energy.RHODIUM.29022.Sense2.5.MaxSense.Jul.08.7z
My Rhodium Update Utility (RUU) is
Rhodium_CustomRUU_v1.1.zip
I Open it and I see
CustomRUU.exe
Here is where I don't know what to do. Some instructions say that I need a .NBH file. Where do I get this file. They say it should be with my ROM.
All I get when I dl the ROM is
Energy.RHODIUM.29022.Sense2.5.MaxSense.Jul.08.7z
Format 7z not .nbh
I get the Error [240] File Open when I run CustomRUU.exe. To fix it they say
"When this error message appears, check whether the downloaded image is placed in the DIRECTORY of RUU. If, for some unknown reason, you find that the ROM image is not located in the RUU folder, you have to download the RUU and retry again."
What is the "DIRECTORY" of RUU"? Whats a directory? I never heard that term before.
Of which RUU? CustomRUU.exe?
Do I make a folder and put CustomRUU.exe in it with the Energy.RHODIUM.29022.Sense2.5.MaxSense.Jul.08.7z ?
Where is the .nbh file? Do I rename the ROM IMAGE to .nbh?
Please give me step by step. Ive read so much already and I dont know what to do anymore. Thank you for your help.
-___- I cannot believe I spent all this time for something so dumb. We should put this on the Help for NOOBS thread. The file " .7z " cannot be opened with Winzip. To open the file you have to use WINRAR. And from there we can see the Rhodium_SoftwareUpgrade.exe (RUU) and the RHODIMG.nbh files. And double clicking the Rhodium_SoftwareUpgrade.exe the software will start walking you through the process for flashing. I think it would be a good idea to add on the HOW TO FLASH A ROM that the 7z file requires WINRAR to be opened.
But thanks to the Lord I learned how to flash the Rom successfully.

looking for pc36img

I just recently picked up a evo 4g wimax from a buddy of mine that recently updated to a gs3 and I am trying to achieve unlocked/s-off. I am using this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1771755 and The zip file I downloaded from the thread contains a pc36img, The only thing though is every time I download from that thread the pc36img is corrupt and I can not find a download link that is working anymore. I did find this other guide http://themikmik.com/showthread.php...18-HBOOT-with-HTCDev-com-No-More-Watermark!-) that has a few pc36img files available to be downloaded but I tried http://d-h.st/XJX that one and the same thing happened, the downloaded zip file is corrupt. Can anyone help me out or point me in the right direction?

If you mean that RootEvo4Gnew.zip file:

Downloaded from a different computer and still the same issue, file is corrupt. Trying to check the md5 value and it does not even give me a md5 at all matching or not. I am going to go to a friends house and try downloading it again.
Ok, I have tried from a 3 different computers, my tablet and my htc thunderbolt and everytime it ends up in a corrupt/invalid .zip file. Can anyone link me to a known good working file so I can downgrade my hboot and get s-off?

You downloaded from 3 different computers, probably through the same connection, but I believe you tried to run them from the same computer that failed every time, just a guess.
Just tried 2 of the links:
http://d-h.st/XJX
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/38127313/RootEvo4GNew.zip
and I'm currently in the process of trying the 3rd.
http://downloadandroidrom.com/file/H...otEvo4GNew.zip from your link here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1771755
They work just fine. The problem appears to be on your end. All three downloads are OK.
And if that's not the case, here is the same file that I have been using since last year that others have downloaded. So if this one fails as well, then yes, there is definitely something wrong on your end.
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/38127313/P....15.00.0808_NV_2.15_release_220182_signed.zip
Also, I'm going to downgrade and S-OFF my old Evo with the same files just to verify that they are OK.

Stop trying to open the zip files and you'll be fine . The ones in my thread are fine, as was mentioned.
In the past with my thunderbolt and downloading the same files I have noticed if I can not open the zip file and see what is in it then it will not properly flash. But just for the sake of argument I will do it your way.

If you have to you could always download the froyo RUU and pull the rom.zip from it, rename to PC36IMG.zip and flash
To do this, run the RUU but do not click anything after it opens
With the RUU still open, open a "Run..." window (WindowsKey + R) and type in "%temp%" then enter to go to your temporary files folder
Sort the files by date modified and go into the most recent folders, find a zip called "rom.zip" and copy that to your desktop
Close the RUU, rename the "rom.zip" to "PC36IMG.zip" and you can then flash it through bootloader
Sent from my PG06100
Yep, the downloads do work. There is nothing wrong with any of the files. Phone went from 2.18, S-ON to 6.16, S-OFF without any issues from those same downloads.

I also forgot to mention that before trying to open them to see if it was corrupt or not I try to check the md5 of the zip file, it does not even give me a md5 it also says the files are corrupt. I will try again though
I'm having the same problem. I just finished repairing my old EVO and looking to downgrade it to 2.15. All the links have bad files. Tried D/L from work, friends house, parents, and to my SGS3. Always get the same message..."cant open the folder... zipped folder is invalid." I've been to numerous sites about this and i'm always directed to the same files. This isn't a rare issue, it's a lot of people. There's something wrong with those files.

No, there isn't. The zip files are encrypted, so most zip programs will throw an error if you try to open them. They should not be unzipped. The files from my post have always and still work fine. Just follow the instructions and stop trying to open the zip!
NOTE: Some browsers will try to automatically open the zip file when download is complete. In that case, try a different browser.
No go, sir. Opening the zip or not, the fact is it doesn't work. I have a few of these files and none of them are recognized when boot loader is brought back up to flash the file. It scans the zip, can't find file, image or anything. Its the same thing no matter which one I use. I'll keep looking for a good procedure and a decent download.

There's nothing wrong with Captain's files or the pc36img.zip files given on this page. They work just fine as usual. I just downloaded one (again) and confirmed it.
Is your phone S-Off? Did you flash a mtd-eng.img file to your misc partition, so that it will downgrade?
If you answer no to both of these questions, then the problem is not necessarily the zip files, but is likely on your end. And if you answered no to both of those questions, then the zip files are not likely going to work for you.
And, if one of your answers is yes, then it could be a problem with your sdcard. Sometimes they are full, or not formated correctly, or have some other issue, which will also cause the files to fail. You cannot always assume that just because a file does not work the way you expect it to, that it is necessarily something wrong with that file.

[q] need a non root stock ruu zip

I can't seem to find one anywhere. All the links I am encountering are dead. Does anyone have this file laying around or know where I can get it? My evo is dead right now and from everything I've read this is what I need to get it up and running again. Thanks in advance.
Sorry but, RUU zip? Lol thats like saying you need a JPG word doc.
Anyway, I don't think you searched hard enough, look up "supersonic RUU's" on google, first hit. Download from there, they're hosted on team nocturnals website.
Lol right, been seeing a lot of these lately. And it seems only people who put in the op that they are "noobs" are the only ones who can't find this stuff. But, Phandroid is way worse about this. Which is funny because the sticky at the top of the forum has all the links and instructions to root and unroot every h-boot and hardware version. So what I'm saying is please people just LOOK, it's all you have to do, please.

you may find the ruu your looking for here.... http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Supersonic
but the ruu will be a zip
if you want the zip, IE - PC36IMG.zip you will have to extract it.
i just did this exact thing today. i needed the shipped and pre-release ruu for some goodies contained within. followed this guide...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26541170&postcount=1
just rename ROM.zip to PC36IMG.zip instead of PG58IMG.zip
here's the gist of that thread you need to perform.
4.1 Getting PG58IMG.zip from RUU
Run the RUU executable as you normally would, but don't proceed to the second step i.e. when a second window appears, do nothing. Do not proceed, just ignore it for now, but don't close the window.
Right-click the Windows Start button and select "Open Window Explorer" option.
If you use Windows XP
Copy-paste this in the navigation bar:
Code:
C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Local Settings\Temp\
If you use Windows Vista/7
Press & hold Windows key on the keyboard and then press R (Win key + R). Once the box pops up, copy paste this:
Code:
%temp%
Right click anywhere inside explorer window (not on any folder) and select Sort by then select Date.
Locate the latest one created (first in the list & it will most likely have random numbers in the name) & open it.
You will find a second folder with a set of random numbers. Open it, inside you will find a number of files and the rom.zip
Copy the rom.zip file to another location.
Now, close the RUU executable folder & rename the rom.zip file as PG58IMG.zip

[Need Guidance] Root updated S4 with Mac.

Hi pals,
This is one of those "I'm too busy to research A, B and C, please feed it to me with a silver spoon?" posts, and for that, I'm sorry.
I'm working a lot lately, but I just bought my S4 and have come to understand that in order to root it with the May 7th update, I must follow different instructions. The problem is, I need to do this on a Mac, and therefore need to use Heimdall to do it. Not only do I not know anything about Heimdall, but I've been out of touch with the rooting/ROMming scene for a while now.
Could someone please sum up a step-by-step for a Mac user trying to root their S4 that's got the May 7th update on a Mac?
Go to an Internet Cafe or something.
Not being a jerk, but i'd rather go to kinko's than do it with a mac
That being said check out zedomax's

Unfortunately this is a matter of not having time on my hands. I have these random little bits of 10 minutes here and there in my life lately and I can only hope to root this phone during one of them lol
I'm going to Google this video though, really appreciate the heads up.
Edit: After searching, are one of these videos Mac specific and geared towards post-May 7th-update users? They're all kind of looking the same to me and I can't open them all.

Download this Heimdall Suite for MAC here: https://github.com/downloads/Benjamin-Dobell/Heimdall/heimdall-suite-1.3.2-mac.dmg
After it's downloaded install the suite.
The Suites package contains the frontend which uses a Graphical User Interface simular to Odin for windows.
Here is the link for the STOCK Tmobile Heimdall flashable Samsung Galaxy S4 Touchwiz Jellybean 4.2.2 official firmware:
http://k0nane.info/rom/M919UVUAMDL_M919TMBAMDL_TMB.zip
After you download the firmware, unzip and extract the TAR file and then extract all the files which are inside the TAR file
into a new folder on your computers desktop.
Be sure that you have installed the proper samsung usb drivers for your phone before trying to use Heimdall.
Download and Install the Heimdall Suite. (this is a Odin replacement for the MAC)
Using Heimdall
Step 1: Run/Execute “heimdall-frontend”
Step 2: When Heimdall opens there will be different slots to put files into, the filenames correspond to the name of the slots.
Navigate to the new folder on your desktop which has all the files you have extracted out of the .tar file
Example: Under FactoryFS click browse and find the FactoryFS.rfs file that you extracted out of the .tar file into your new folder.
When you’re finish double check that the correct files are in the correct slots.
Make sure that you do not checkmark the repartition device!
Step 3: Check to be sure that all the necessary files are in the right slots and the necessary checkboxes are checked.
When you’re finish reboot your phone into download mode and connect it to the usb port that you installed the drivers to.
Wait for about 5 secs. to let your computer recognize that your phone is plugged in the usb then click START.
Wait for Heimdall to complete finish the flashing.
You should get a “flash completed successfully” after it's done and the phone will now restart.
Good Luck!

Hey thank you so much for laying that out!
One question; How do you extract the TAR.md5? From what I'm reading, you need a Windows PC and a special application and all this crazy stuff to do it. Can I do it with a Mac application?
Edit: Wait, can I just rename the md5 to zip? Duh?
Edit 2: Yes, you can, I did, and I'm all set lol Gonna go for it now, thank you!

Ok, so I think I may be having an issue due to using the latest version of Heimdall. I've checked out the guide on Heimdall here and it's based on version 1.1. I have version 1.3.2 and I don't see anywhere to select certain files. All I seem to be able to do under "Flash" is select a PIT file, which I don't have.
I tried to "Load Package" on the first screen, but it's telling me it's not the right file size.

Sorry, I forgot about the MD5, just remove the md5 from the filename so the extension is simply .zip
then unzip it into a new folder on your desktop...
And NO you do not need a PC.

It's been so long since I used a mac, I know I am forgetting things.
You need to click the BROWSE box in Heimdall Suite's Front-End which opens another window where you can "navigate"
to the TAR file which is located in the zipfile. (you don't need to use pit or any other files besides the TAR for anything).
Just unzip the ZIP file so Heimdall can see the TAR file when you navigate to it with the Heimdall's Front-End.
Good luck!

Sorry, I forgot about the MD5, just remove the md5 from the filename so the extension is simply .zip
then unzip it into a new folder on your desktop...
And NO you do not need a PC.
Good luck!

Ok, haha, I feel so bad because I'm being a pest at this point.
I've got the files, 12 of them, extracted to a folder.
I'm using Heimdall version 1.3.1.
When I open Heimdall-frontend, I'm presented with two options (others are greyed out): Either load a Heimdall Firmware Package under "Load Package" tab, or load a PIT under "Flash"
I see a space for "Partitions (Files)" where I'm assuming I would add the individual files, but again, it's greyed out.
What am I missing here? I checked out the Heimdall guide here and it looks totally different given that it's version 1.1.

Do you see a "Browse" box?
Click the BROWSE box and it will be looking for a TAR file which you navigate to.
Also, don't do anything with PIT files, you don't need it and if done wrong or incomplete your phone will be bricked
exactly the same way as if you were to flash a pit file in Odin.
The PIT file is the partition information file, and once that's on your phone it never needs to be replaced or over-written
unless your phone is bricked.

You're talking about a Browse button under Heimdall Firmware Package? Yes.
Do I just navigate to the TAR.md5 that I extracted from the original zip? Or am I navigating to a TAR file in the folder I made with the 12 files? Because if it's the second one, I don't have any TAR files in there.
Sorry man, I know this is a pain. I really appreciate the help though.

Hi pals,
This is one of those "I'm too busy to research A, B and C, please feed it to me with a silver spoon?" posts, and for that, I'm sorry.

I think I found something better and easier for you.......
Check this out: https://code.google.com/p/heimdall-one-click/downloads/list
Download and install both of the files, both of them are JAR free standing apps and they work on Mac OR PC since
they are both written in JAVA.
.
I forgot already, but on a PC before these files can be used the latest version of Sun System JAVA has to be installed
or updated..
But I think if I recall correctly, on a mac it's perhaps not needed.

Oh fancy. Java is needed and I'm downloading it now. Thanks. So this is basically the Heimdall suite but simplified?

So I've got it all running, however, the one-click asks for a "tar.gz file" and I don't have one. I'm reading that the Heimdall front-end creates a tar.gz file, but since browsing to the .zip I originally downloaded leads to an error, I'm not sure how this is done.

Yes, about an hour ago I recalled a guy here on XDA called Adam Outler and he is
the one who designed and made these two JAR Heimdall applications.
He used to be around here in XDA about a year ago and I just recalled his name
about an hour ago because we were talking about MAC and Heimdall.
He made many other projects for us here in XDA who had MAC computers
and had no access to a PC.

That's amazing. The never ending kindness of the community at its best lol
I'm still trying to figure out how to make a tar.gz file. I'm understanding that front-end makes it, and I've even watched a video guide, but no one specifies what file to use when you click "Browse..." and choose a file to put in as "Heimdall Firmware File"
I've been using the original .zip I downloaded from the rooting guide, but I get that error about the file being the wrong size or something.
So I tried to download the PIT just to see if I can even make parts of this program work. It failed.
When I researched the error "Claiming interface failed" I found this.
It describes some sort of issue with the fact that I've installed Kies.
Is this part of my problem?

Did you rename the TAR file? - if you did try naming it back to the original name.
All firmware TAR files are fully compatible with Heimdall and Odin plus Heimdall One-Click..
Also I know one thing for sure, that when you press the "Browse" button it's looking for a TAR file.
The MD5 just tells the winzip or winrar if the checksum of the file is the same as it's sopposed to be.
Another thing, the Heimdall One-Click JAR file also wants the TAR file, none of these things work
with Zipfiles with the exception of Mobile Odin, but that has a problem now, it's not yet compatible
with any of the Galaxy S4 variants like the M919 , I9500 and all the others.

Here's exactly what I've done so far, and I've re-downloaded everything so I have fresh files and filenames/extensions just to clear any mucking up I did:
I downloaded this file from this thread as I understand this is the stock firmware necessary to use here.
I unzipped the file, and used 7-zip to extract the tar.md5 which also extracted a .dll.
The tar.md5 file is named: M919UVUAMDL_M919TMBAMDL_M919UVUAMDL_HOME_.tar.md5
I have installed Heimdall version 1.3.1 as the download site claims that version 1.3.2 broke compatability with many devices.
I downloaded the two .jar files you linked to which make up the one-click.
If all of this is correct so far, I'm understanding that I need to now feed a tar.gz file to heimdall one-click, however, I don't have any files that end in .gz. Just the tar.md5, which the one-click does not accept.
The button on the one-click literally says, "Select a Heimdall tar.gz for one-click" - So I'm lost there.
I'm reading that the front-end GUI is what would be used to create a tar.gz, but it seems to require downloading the PIT file from your phone, and this is failing now, possible due to me having installed Kies and now having different kernel extensions that apparently need to be unloaded (no idea how to do that lol).
This is so complicated! Makes me want to go buy a cheap netbook lol

Why not browse to the TAR file, you can also add the .gz to the filename.tar and see if it helps.

I've tried that too, and it just says, "error Could not write to temp folder" and then "Could not write to file"
