VPN slows down the speeds a lot. But from what I've been able to find out, I can tether just fine for laptops and cell phones but whenever I try with my ps4 it won't let me log in

Uuuuuh no. I used to work for Tmobile and this might be hard for you to comprehend in all your self righteousness but there are actually people who use 1 terabyte or more a month and that's who tmobiles worried about. Don't believe me, that's fine, go do some reading for yourself. Tmobiles not a backyard company who's multi billion dollar network can't handle a measly 113gb. Besides I rack up about 47gb a month just on my phone alone with no tethering. Yes I have a life and job, no I don't live in my moms basement, so keep the childish comments to yourself.

Yes I ran into this issue with the Note 3 and Note 4, but I started using FoxFi and it's been working fine on my Note 4 for the past week.
I just made my tethering mod for this new lollipop for my wife's Note 3, and yesterday I wound up using her 3gb tethering and then I got blocked by the Tmobile message, and tried it again just a few moments ago, and to my surprise it was working again,
She doesn't like me messing with her phone, so I have to wait till she is asleep to play with it.
So it is working with lollipop with FoxFi. I will keep playing with it and see what happens. It is in testing stages.
I wasn't able to make my rom work with @dsixda kitchen, so i was using @mastergrillo stock rom and edited a few files and its working with @jovy23 turorial, that's how I've been able to make things work. I need permission from @mastergrillo to use his rom before I can post the Tethering Mod Rom.
I tried it last night and the only thing that wont tether is signing into the ps4 network but Netflix and YouTube works just fine, also tethering to a laptop. So it does look like they're finding a way to block it. But the thing is I never got a message from Tmobile saying that I used up my 5gb of data. Very weird

Using a built-in hot-spot to tether is not a big deal as long as you use it accordingly and for the purpose it was meant.
2.5 G of data is plenty for the average user powering a tablet, laptop or media player on the go or outdoors away from a wifi signal.
It comes in handy while on long road trips and the misses wants to watch some Netflix or Amazon prime.
But trying to run your entire household off of T-Mobile's network is kind of lame, I guess that this over tethering abuse is OK with XDA and when you least expect it T-mobile is going to make a case of it and drag somebody into court and the lawyers will have a field day with it.
If you're allowed 2.5gb and you want to use 200+gb, technically it can be called "theft of services" , give yourself peace of mind and buy some Internet service from a provider, 30 or 40 dollars a month isn't such a hardship.
I personally use it sparingly but really appreciate having it to use and not abuse.

The problem is that for the 2.5GB data users paid for, there is only 500MB allowed for tethering.
Users want to use their paid 2.5gb data, either on the phone or using tethering, because they already pay for the 2.5gb data and they should be able use their paid data the way they want.

According to the plan comparison chart on t mobile site you can tether all of your data quota except for the unlimited plan where you are capped at 5G, which makes some sense.
I would very much like to have the freedom to learn how to bypass tether restrictions but at the same time running an entire household worth of data off t mobile network isn't right. Just imagine what AT&T would do to you if you used 100G on their LTE plan.
Please don't get me wrong, I'm not giving a moral lecture. I am making a practical point. We all switched from AT&T or Verizon because we like what T Mobile is doing. If we abuse the system T Mobile will fail and we will have to go back to AT&T. I make a living designing telecom electronics for a company you all know so I can tell you with 100 percent confidence that if we all run our entire home Internet on t mobile network it will break and they will have to reduce the data rate for every one. It's a simple application of the available bandwidth, Shannon's theorem, and the number of users in a given cell.
So as a practical issue, let's figure out how to by pass tethering and then use it responsibly.

Get a $30 month flip phone and spend the money your saving on some Internet for your home.
I don't subscribe to cable, I just have a middle plan from Cablevision thats $50 month with Netflix, Prime with a smart Tv , a Roku in the bedroom and an antenna, and get board watching TV.

My understanding is that with PDANet, tethering looks like normal data use. Does Wireless Tether or the hacked Sprint Hotspot app (warm 2.2) also show up as normal data use or can Sprint tell you're tethering over wifi?
I ask because apparently AT&T has been sending letters to customers who use MyWi forcing them to either sign up for a tethering plan or stop tethering... Can (would?) Sprint do something similar?

Sprint can't tell unless they use Deep Packet Inspection and see something like "Oh hey, what's all this encrypted traffic coming from Netflix's server?".
As for AT&T, they're just yelling at anyone with high amounts of data usage. Simple as that.

I showed him the Rom and told him about rooting, tether and all. He said " "damm. show me how to do that on mines"....i told about Unrevoked and XDA. NOW Im sure he could be reading this thread!
i'm not sure if they can, but i think they stated publicly that they dont care. their paid one just works better, and on 3g and 4g, while consuming less battery than the rest. this is their response, and i think it works well. self-advertising while not angering devs. pretty good of them.

if you switch roms, most have a hacked hospot to work on 3g. wifi tether app also works on 4g.

you can do both no charge.
Sprint mainly checks for users exceeding the 5Gb per month for data. Other than that, it is difficult to tell without users feeling that their privacy is being invaded. 5Gb comes up quickly if you are streaming movies or downloading outside the normal browsing or youtube.

Yeah, but it wouldn't be a store employee checking anyway. Either way, seems like they don't care.
My evo was rooted with revoked, but still using the standard rom. I was able to use wireless tether without converting to any other rom. Be sure to use the security features (passphrase and access control) to prevent inadvertent use by others.

Sprint doesn't have a 5gb limit on smartphone plans, that is only on data cards on the 3g network. I just watched a commercial yesterday with Dan Hess stating that Sprints unlimited plans have no limits, unlike Verizon and AT&T.

they dont have a throttle, they just look into it if you pull that much. like somebody said earlier, if you're pulling 8 gigs from netflix's server, there is only one explanation.
Anybody know of any specific examples of customers getting called out for excessive data use or wifi tethering? I assume there would've been an outrage on XDA and I would've heard about it... I don't think it's happened yet.
I get it that Sprint says they're truly unlimited but I have a nagging suspicion that they're eventually going to crack down on unauthorized tethering. Not that that's going to stop me in the mean time!

I'd have to dig through the contract and T&C but technically speaking wouldn't tethering without a plan be a contract violation? I'm not claiming to be Mr. Innocent here. I've done the free tethering and have had tethering plans. Just seems to me that since we all signed contracts legally speaking the carriers have more of a leg to stand on than we do.

I think with the sale of tmobile to at&t, Sprint will increase their user base with people bailing either one. Maybe, hopefully not, they'll begin to check our usage.
Then again, they'll be moving to LTE. Which means those of us with wimax devices, yours truly, will be left to use our data to our desires. At least I hope so.

I use over 20 gigs a month downloading files(ROMs, files for work, etc) and streaming videos to my phone and have for almost two years. Not once have I been throttled or warned.

So it sounds like the takeaway is that if Sprint wanted to, they could tell that you're tethering, but there is no evidence that they've ever done it or taken any action against customers... Cool.

I use Slingplayer daily for hours sometimes, then I'll tether my iPad 2 and watch movies from my computer while traveling around via AirVideo. I am currently at 10GB of usage this month which is average, they never throttled me or anything.
I've hit over 12GB of usage regularly with no complaints from Sprint. YMMV.
I'm on stock GB but rooted. Any suggestion to wifi tether without install a new ROM?
UPDATE: download open garden wifi tether from the marketplace works!

They can suspect by how much data usage, and unless its a completely ridiculous amount, you are fine. I tether, but its nothing great at all.

They aren't using data usage to tell. There are reports all over of people opening tethering apps and getting redirected to warnings.

Also, in my opinion, the only way SPRINT can tell if you're tethering is if they had a way to access the routing tables (i.e. MAC Addresses) on your phone. Simply using a lot of data isn't 100% proof considering that Netflix, HULU and Google Video offer streaming services. I use HDMwIn to watch movies from my phone to my HDTV so it's not like I'm restricted to watching a good flick on my 4.3" screen.
I am assuming verizon would do something like that

AT&T and Verizon have definitely figured out ways to tell if you're using a tethering app and are using it to crack down. I'm not sure it's firmware based, but there are a few ways they could probably figure it out. So far though, there's no evidence Sprint is doing anything like this.

my wife got a call from sprint last week telling her she had 10 days to reduce her usage or they would cancel her line...she was rooted and using wireless tether...not installed from the market....she uses mp3 rocket on her pc to download music, streams movies via netflix and various other outlets...thats it for her...it was all over 3G data connection...i called sprint to find out wat the deal was and they straight told me the sites and protocols she used...they also told me that yes data is unlimited unless u use it to stream or download things...had them push me up to higher dept manager and i complained that the 3G speed was so slow, .5 dl, and they told me that is perfectly normal and fine, you dont need anything faster to web browse...i am still furious over this...i had her unroot her phone so we wouldnt be canceled...i am still in shock that this happened...they said she was using over 5Gb a month for 3 consecutive months...

umm be happy she wasn't charged for tethering
The reality is she is the minority of users that carriers lose money on with unlimited. They did studies in the USA and most folks don't even come close to using it all but we get so hung up on having unlimited we pay extra just for the comfort. I am sure sprint has it all in black and white in our contracts so you should feel good that you weren't charged

Considering sprint advertisers true unlimited, and they emphasize the true unlimited, I would contact the BBB. Find a link to one of the sprint true unlimited ads and give the link in your report.

I have already used 2GB ... i normally never touch 1Gig ...
... and i kinda been using my phone to play some black ops ...
want to know if i should stop or if it's safe to keep using it ...
Theoretically Sprint has unlimited data but if you abuse it enough they may care.
Probably hold off on torrents and similar and you should be ok. There are plenty of people who use 20GB of data with out trouble.

If you are using 4g then they don't care. If you are using 3g they may notice after around 5gb
As long as you're not excessively roaming on data and you're not doing anything illegal you're fine.
We've had users post usages far exceeding 5GB / month for multiple months in a row with no problems.
Just be smart and responsible.
There's no need to torrent on your mobile connection.
And really, to be honest, there's not much of an excuse to go over 20GB in a month for any reason.
Abuse leads to locking down and limiting for all.
I use 7-8GB a month every month for the past 2+ years. Never heard a complaint or anything from sprint. You will be fine...

Thanks for noting this mattykinxs.... I think folks tend to forget, in their quest to max out their mobile data, that they run the risk of "achieving" limited data for all. (Not suggesting this is the OP's goal, just something to remember.)
We pay a $10 monthly premium for truely unlimited data from Sprint. This is why I didn't go with Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, etc. Verizon has a better network but I'm not going to pay $100 a month to be throttled after 2GB.
However I agree, just don't abuse it and ruin it for everyone by downloading 100GB of data in a month via bittorrent or streaming HD porn 24/7
I'm at about 25gb of data this month. Never had issues with sprint wanting to boot me

We have the right to free speech, doesn't make it right to yell the n word in a public place.
Like all things that are "free", "unlimited", "open" they all come with responsibility, with the understanding that abuse will force restriction.
Unlimited data is intended to allow you to use what you need and not have to sit there and say "what's my usage, do I have any left for this month?"
NOT so a person can download 500GB in torrents.

Simply put, with excessive abuse Sprint won't be able to continue to afford giving us unlimited data.
So I got Wifi Tether working on my GS3 on the unlimited 4g plan. I only tether once in a while to my ipad and even then use minimal data.
My question is, while tethering (using Wifi-tether set to nexus s/lte option) do i need to take any extra steps to hide the fact that im tethering? Im sure they would be able to tell. Do i need to use a proxy or different dns or something.

I just got blocked. So I tried a different phone. Still a no go. Googled it and it appears they are now sniffing user-agents for the HTTP protocol. I used tether a lot. Like over 3 gigs. And I'm really pissed right now. But I've searched the net and that all say to bypass my issue is to change my user-agent on my computer.. don't think you'll have issues with your iPad

Mobile devices (phones, tablets, etc.) use different protocols when sending/receiving information over the internet than a computer does. If I understand it correctly, they will easily detect tethering to a computer, while they may not be able to tell you are tethering when tethering to another mobile device, such as a tablet. I could be totally wrong there, but that is my understanding of it.
Just out of curiosity, were you tethering to your computer or other mobile devices? I have considered purchasing a tablet, but don't want to pay for another line of service for it, would be nice to be able to tether it to my phone when out and about so I still have internet access.
Ive always tethered to my ipad with tmobile with no problem but now i changed to the unlimited data plan, i suppose they are watching it closley now.
Can anyone confirm that protocal stuff regarding the ipad and other mobile devices?

you guys are taking this for granted...honestly tether once in a while if they take a look at your account and see 30-40 gigs thats looking suspicious as hell. not to mention T-mobile Technician are on these website reading how you guys by passing the system..they will figure out a way eventually to stop everyone because of you, so dumb!
With running netflix and pandora all day, for a month you can hit some pretty high numbers, and im sure thats what many people are doing now. I dont see how looking at data usage soley can determine if someone is tethering.
Unless it is a server side thing like the throttling is, theres always a way to beat the system.

They can't determine tethering by simply looking at data. Just as you said there are users that easily use 10+ gig in data a month without ever tethering. There is other backend detection going on that determines tethering.

It's based off of user-agent and the HTTP protocol. And to the op, my data still works I just can't use internet explorer anymore. I have to use Firefox.

Interestingly enough, the federal government agrees. I really wish the ruling extended to all carriers and all plans, alas it only applies to certain plans on Verizon Wireless. When Verizon bought the spectrum they are using from the government, the FCC declared they must use it openly and have since ruled that they cannot charge customers extra for tethering, basically the government believes if you pay for data, you can use it however you want, but they can't dictate that on the other carriers, they simply had leverage against Verizon in this case. Charging for tethering is straight up greed on the part of the carriers.

i understand youtube and pandora but why the hell would you watch netflix on a small screen? you paid 30 bucks to use data on your phone as it intended to be, why dont you pay 50 bucks and get the tethering plan? either man up and pay or stop being a ***** about it. Your not entitle to anything but stated by tmobile, anything more is a bonus to you.

Lolwut? I (and millions of other users) watch netflix on a small screen because it's convenient and portable. We pay 30 bucks to use an alloted (or, as the case may be now, unlimited) amount of data via our cellular network. While T-Mobile has a right to dictate how you can use the data allotment they provide for you, it doesn't make it any less greedy on their part.
I don't think anyone here feels they are entitled to anything more, we simply are of the opinion that if we are paying for an alloted data amount we should be able to use that allotment as we see fit. You think T-Mobile will give you a promotion if they see you are yelling at people for not paying for tethering or something?

it says right in the term that you cannot tether the data, so yes your paying for data but your not allow to tether either. if you want to tether then pay the 50 bucks for it. no one forces you to pay them for data, if you dont like it use your own wifi, stop being cheap and try to cheat the system.

Your opinion has been noted, i posted this to get some questions answered, not to have a moral debate. You say tethering is wrong, yet you clearly want us to "hush the hell up" so they dont block it, if your against it then you shouldnt feel the need to continue trolling.
***Im still looking for someone who knows for sure how their new technique in detecting tethering works, and a sure way of getting by it

Um hrm.. last I heard, Chrome was blocked from tethering. So if IE is too. Thats something different. Which means my main browser Firefox is still win. =)
Now if I have to personally, I have no issue paying 10$ less and going back to my 2GB with hotspot ability if I needed. However not heard of anyone being blocked by rooted tether yet tho.
By Tethering are you guys referring to an App for tethering or Wired Tethering? Or is this the "WiFi HotSpot" deal too?
I usually use my Cell as a HotSpot for my Nexus 7 at work. Will this not work now that I have the "Truly unlimited plan" when I just got my SGS3?
Ok just tested something with my "Tmobile Hotspot" while on the new 4G Unl plan. It enables fine. Your PC can connect too. Load up in firefox... nothing happens, page loads blank forever. However.. Load in IE. Comes up with a message saying you are not on the hotspot plan, would you wanna add it for 15$ a month.
So seems IE has a way to parse TMOs data on tethering.
Now on my Rooted Wifi tether app. That works fine. No issues. =)
You cannot use the t mobile hotspot application if you do not have the tethering data plan. I know that you can download the wifi tether appplication that will allow you to tether your phone but as the other person said they have a way of detecting when you are tethering your phone my question is how do we get around that.

Oh so you're saying that I'm not allowed to use s beam or mhl adapter to push the video to my television? Why the hell have the features then?
Data is simply data. That's the base line it's black and white. Just because everyone is greedy is the only reason they make you pay for tethering.

So I've been fet'up with getting throttled from Straight talk using my tmobile note2.. good service anda good deal.. but you get what you pay for $45 for unlimited everything with the "asterisk". So I was at a tmobile store in Bellvue, wa. yesterday and after testing the network at least in the store(20mb up and and down!!) I decided since no contract to pay the 25 more this month and give it a shot. And it's good.. I'm in tacoma and average 5mb up and 2mb down. Now.. my question is red flags.. do I need to watch my tethering? For example.. If my comast was out for 5 days and I watched some vudu hdx and netflix hd movies and used multiple gigs or whatever via wifi tether would I need to worry about getting a call from TMO or anything or what? Also I'm using a t889UVALJ1 based rom.. would I be getting better speeds with the UVBMB4 based rom? I can't seem to find any current LTE coverage maps..

I don't think Tmobile throttles you just for tethering so long as you're within your data cap. when I joined they told me to tether as much as I want.
T-Mobile is going to start additional service w/additional price to 4G Unlimited plan. The additional service is tethering. Tethering data usage will be limited to the tether plan you choose. But the 4G Unlimited plan will stay 4G/LTE unlimited. I don't know when this tethering addition will be available.
I believe that 500meg tether plan will be part of the default pricing plan. If you want more tethering data usage then you have to pay more. Correct me if I am wrong.
At this point no one is providing true high speed unlimited tethering. Basically no cellular provider wants to be a data provider to desktops and laptops.
ok I see.. I knew that the unlimited no throttle 4g plan was 70.. and now that I look at my bill it shows 500mb of tethering included.. I was thinking when you were rooted and using a 3rd party app to tether with they couldn't tell that you were tethering.... is this wrong? they can tell no matter how you tether?
I'm not a tmobile customer...yet, but Sprint can't tell the difference between tethered or untethered data when rooted and using 3rd party.
Sorry to ask off topic question but how much data were you using on Straight Talk? I'm considering giving them a shot.

My data usage was sporadic.. a few times at first I had streamed a few gigs over a weekend when commuting between Eugene Oregon and Seattle and wasn't getting throttled.. and sometimes I would stream talk radio at school a few hours a day and get throttled. I have some friends that also use straight talk and don't have problems.. one jogs and hour a day listening to pandora or xmradio online and doesn't ever get throttled.. I think if you kept it under a couple hundreds mb's a day you would be fine.. but that one time you stream netflix for a couple hours one day.. or couple days of heavier use and you'll probably get the squeeze. The internet still works but it's 56k slow. And if you get throttled it isn't till your next billing period before it gets reset.. so if it's the 12th of the month and you get hit you won't have full speed till the 1st of the next month.. then your a little paranoid to use it too much.. I had no coverage issues with straight talk and the price is unmatched but unless I'm on a tight budget the $70 uncapped tmobile service will likely be worth the extra 25 bucks a month.

T-Mobile will be able to tell you are tethering since they read what kind of packets are being sent. Laptops and desktops send a different type of data packet than mobile devices. If you are tethering to another android or ios device you can tether all you want no problem,but a laptop or desktop you will need to use a browser like chrome or firefox and change the user agent to either android or ios. That to me that defeats the purpose because if I wanted to look at mobile version of the web I can just use my phone.
You can use an app called pdanet which will let you USB tether and hide your tether usuage, but some websites might not work.
Another option is to set up a vpn and connet to the internet via vpn. A vpn connection encrypts all data transmission so t-mobile cannot read it so no need to change user agents.
Really I think tethering should be free. Why should I have to pay for the same data twice. That's the biggest rip off that all carriers are doing, but untill enough people complain it will stay as it is.

You are not paying for the same data twice. If tethering was unlimited in theory your neighbors could tether if you let them. You can run multiple devices and different data. It is all about bandwidth

Technically you are. There is no difference from the data the cellular companies send to your phone vs tethering. It's not like they use a different source of data for tethering. It's the same but they want to charge you as if it's different or costing them more if you tether. If I use 20 Gb a month on my phine or tethering to my laptop or pc whats the difference. It's still 20 Gb. Whether mobile or not the data is srill the same and from the same source, so why charge as if it was different?

As far as I am concerned, it is costing them more in bandwidth usage. If everyone was allowed to tether all they want, the network would become so congested that data shows might becone slower for every user.
I may be wrong. Someone with a broader knowledge correct me if I am.

Not talking unlimited tethering.. But if I am paying for 5gb data, it should be up to me if I want to burn it watching Netflix on my phone... Or if I want to stream it on my laptop...

Of course they can they just choose to look the other way. Carriers can at any time they want put a packet sniffer on your account.
