Those of you who have switched from a Nexus 5 to the GPE M8, have you noticed any issues with the sound? I had the GPE M8 and returned it since some notifications would distort sometimes and you could hear distortion when turning up the volume. I returned it to see if this could get ironed out and went back to the Nexus 5, but miss the build quality and battery life of the M8.
What about camera quality? Do you notice a big difference between the two. One of the reasons I went back was for the camera, but now I can't decide if that was worth it or not.
Seriously? All the notifications are very low quality files. Horrible way to judge the sound output of the device. If that's your criteria than the M8 isn't for you since that's a problem that you will face with all the M8s. As for the camera I don't miss it at all honestly. M8s camera has been great so far for me.

I was just wondering if that was an issue with the phone or the notifications itself. I had never experienced that before. It wasn't constantly, so I thought it might have been an issue. But thank you for chiming in on that.
And the GPE M8 camera isn't as good as the Sense M8, from what I have heard as it's basically just a stock 4mp camera. So I was wondering other people's experiences with switching from the 8mp camera of the N5 (which I have found to be pretty solid) to the 4mp camera of the GPE M8.
I've used the GPE conversion and noticed no noticeable difference and photo quality. Plus all the features you get with the stock M8 camera are still available to you.

TBH I do notice a difference in camera quality... it doesn't seem as "sharp". Appears more soft than when using Sense camera.

That's kind of what I thought. The quality of pics coming from the Nexus 5 seem to be quite a bit better than the GPE M8. That's the only thing holding me back.

In terms of detail the nexus 5 is probably better on both sense and GPE M8, but at least you get more camera features and tweaks. By no means is it a bad camera, just don't zoom in and it looks amazing, better than my girlfriends note 2. Only when zooming in it becomes clear. And low light performance is only second to high end nokia lumias.

Are you referring to the quality of pics on the GPE M8 or stock M8 when comparing it to the Note 2?
Another thing I noticed was shutter speed. The Nexus is definitely much faster there. Which is important when taking pictures of speedy toddlers.

Yeah the GPE M8 I had was much slower than the Nexus 5. I even tried them side by side and it was obvious which one was faster. Unless you had the flash or HDR on.

I'd assume that's probably from the bad file quality of the notifications like the first responder said.
I guess it's more an issue with the files themselves and not a problem with the phone.

prob because I don't have audio issues with youtube. although. its just the audio issues 4.4.2 has with certain things

Battery life on the Nexus is just OK. It gets through most days as long as you aren't hard core about using it. But it isn't the best.
The M8 was great. I didn't have a single issue with it. Made it through every day with ease. And that was with a lot of accounts syncing and a decent amount of use.

This was due to the old "stock" camera app available on the GPE at launch. It has since been updated with the release of the Google camera update in the play store. It has zero lag to speak of now.

Well I did try them side by side with the new camera and the Nexus 5 was still faster. Pics are definitely better on the Nexus 5, but they aren't terrible on the M8. They just seem to lack detail and color depth. Even on non zoomed in pics.

Everyone knows camera is weakest link on M8. If you bought M8, you know its limitations. It has been well documented that your daylight pics wont look as good as most other flagship devices which includes Nexus 5. Nexus 5 after the camera updates take brilliant HDR images which are comparable to even Samsung or LG flagships. Better at times.
The images on M8 are flatter. Those who want to defend the M8 Ultra Pixel camera say that it does not matter if you are watching pictures on phone or monitor, but it is clearly visible on most high resolution good quality monitors. Specially if you compare it side by side to images taken by say S4, s5 or even Nexus 5. Even when they are not zoomed in, you can see more detail and sharpness. So nothing out of ordinary here.
As far as Android experience is concerned, GPE is not any faster than Nexus 5 in terms of how it feels while navigating Android UI. The 2 things where M8 kills Nexus 5 is the feel of the phone in hands and battery life. Even on GPE battery life is phenomenal.
If you moved to M8 GPE hoping you will feel the increased performance while using phone, you will be disappointed. There is virtually no difference in performance. You are paying for the hardware quality and materials used. Not for performance.

Opinions are like saying blue looks better than red. When you can actually clearly see and know there is no way in hell a 4MP camera will capture more details than a good 8 or 13MP camera in daylight, it is not a opinion. It is a fact. M8 camera is good at certain things, but definitely not best thing to have to take images with good details. Especially in scenes where there are lot of details outdoors.
I bought M8 knowing what to expect. I had original One. With couple of tricks added thanks to Duo camera, the level of details were simply not going to improve dramatically. Resolution shows its limitations in cases like these.
It is not a ****ty camera by any means, but what OP described is very well documented and known. People expect a $650 phone to blow $350 phone out of water in everything. That is simply not going to happen with phones like M8. It is designed knowing they are compromising something to get gains in other areas. They stuck to it. Whether people like it or not is different matter.
I'm on the verge of picking up a new phone. I originally wanted the Note 7, but waited and then heard about the LG V20 with its Quad Dac. I'm still holding out hope that the Pixel XL has some really nice audio out capabilities (at least better than my Xperia Z3v or Galaxy Note 3). I prefer the quicker updates the Pixel will get, but still. My main use right now would be the 128gb model as I use my phone everyday for listening to music (as well as typical phone stuff). I refuse to carry a DAP and a phone. So basically, what do you guys think? I haven't seen anything discussing the audio capabilities.

I have heard anything in particular with respect to audio quality either.....but if your looking for headphone quality I doubt it will get better than lg v20....if you looking for speakerphone quality then you may as well save some money and get the 6p with the dual front facing speakers and still get pure Google experience and updates.
Either wait for the V20 ( slow updates, hard to root, no development...I have a v10)
Or get the Pixel and a outboard DAC/like a Opportunity HA2.
The 6P with the dual front speakers is obviously the better option for video without headphones.
The best all around solution is 6p and use viper4android to get the quality audio experience you seek plus ffs plus current Android updates
Well, I was looking for a device that had a decent DAC built in. I'm not sure what the Snapdragon 821 brings to the table. I do not subscribe to using software/DSP/EQ to make the audio sound good. I use nice headphones to listen to my music so I don't want to muck it up with software that "fakes" the sound. I don't want to add external devices (such as my Cambridge DacMagic XS or Oppo HA-2) as I'm trying to trim down to a single device.
The best sound by far will be the Htc with viper4android as it rocks I doubt you will find any smartphone that has as good of audio as the Htc 10 with viper4android.

I was thinking about the HTC 10, but Viper4Android is something I wouldn't use. It seems to just be an EQ. I don't use EQ nor do I have any interest whatsoever in doing so. It doesn't increase the quality of the audio coming out of the device.

I'm in the same boat as you. I used a HTC m8 and purchased a Nexus 6p for pure android. The Nexus DAC was terrible so I traveled with both phones. Last month i sold my 6p in anticipation of the event because of HTCs history with audio. I'm regretting that now: I'm sure if the Pixel had a dedicated DAC Google would have played it up during the event.
I'm currently researching a phone to replace my m8: It seems like best are the LG G5, v10 upcoming v20, Axon 7, and of course HTC10. The HTC10 will probably be my next phone: it sucks because it seems like you always have to compromise something.

Agreed! To be honest, I find the Xperia Z3v merely acceptable. It is a little better sounding than my Galaxy Note 3 was. I'm not even looking for something "powerful" as I have 25-32ohm headphones. Though they are quite resolving and I enjoy using them around the house and when I go out in general. If in the end, the Pixel doesn't have good sound (ie... needs to be at least 24/192), and the V20 isn't going to work for me. I'll just keep using my external DACs.
Nexus6p or V20 would work for now...

This is the same reason I am still using Nexus 6 as my daily driver, i tried many phones (Note 4, N6P, Note 5, S7 Edge, Note 7 SD820 version etc..) in the last 2 years and no phone has better audio quality thru audio jack than N6. HTC 10 has some what better audio quality but I don't want to downgrade screen size below 5.5".
It infuriates me whenever people suggest Viper/Arise etc.. to make up for the poor DAC in the phone.
Hoping pixel phone has decent DAC.
I'm going to get the V20 due to the audio quality of the Note 7 (and I'm guessing it's not great on the Pixel either). Quad DAC is going to be amazing.

Funny how people criticize a phone for not having front facing speakers, but the HTC 10 doesn't have them and it is one of the best sounding phones out there right now... and yes, I have a 6P as well. I encourage everyone to save their judgement for when we actually get to hear it or someone gives a review on it.

As for the others who continue to suggest V4A or other software EQ/DSP... enlighten me on how painting a smiley face on a turd of a DAC makes it sound better? It doesn't... it simply alters the sound. I have multiple headphones that I use for different genres of music. THAT is what I use to alter the sound that I'm looking for. EQ and DSP are only meant to cover up the shortcomings of the headphones native sound signature. How would I know if I'm making things worse by polishing a Turd of a DAC by warping the sound signature? If I wanted to make things more "bassy" or "echoey" or whatever you want. I'd just pick up a pair of Beats headphones and call it a day. I'm sure it is a fantastic piece of software, again... it is completely opposite of what I'm looking for. Though, thank you for letting me know that it is out there. The 5 YouTube videos I watched let me know that it wasn't something I'd be interested in beyond a novelty.

I've used it. It helps, but it's still lipstick on a pig. The amp and DAC make a much larger difference. I liked Viper4Android on other devices but there will be no comparison to a phone with a vastly superior DAC. The HTC One M8 was by far the best audio quality I'd ever heard before because of its DAC and amp combo. Did much better than my other phones paired with V4A.

It's already known the pixel phones won't have a DAC and your interest level in pure sound quality is high and clearly outweighs the custom Roms or pure Android experience or early updates you get with Google phones...so I'm not sure what the hesitation is.... Get the phone with the DAC. Honestly the pixel phones are over priced and hardware specs are not comparable to the price.... I'll be keeping my 6p

There is some potentially good news here, Guys. I just read the hands-on with Anandtech and while they didn't mention much about the audio quality, they did say that it has the Qualcomm Aqstic audio codec. So, yes, it's Qualcomm, but it's of much higher quality than the "normal" Qualcomm. The Aqstic is the same DAC/codec used in the HTC 10 which I find little fault with. I think the V10 is still a tad cleaner with a better noise floors, but these are extremely minor differences. For pure Google, fast updates and a nice design, I can easily settle for a Qualcomm Aqstic audio solution rather than an exotic "quad DAC" which still hasn't been released or heard by any audiophile reviewers I don't think. I'm all in for this phone.

Vanilla vs any custom UI is always going to be smoother.
Sense and Touchwiz and the like are getting better but vanilla will always be more fluid.
Install cm or r. Remix and you'll have the same.
Sense is really smooth though, barely any difference.
I tried the pixel, the 10 is just as fast, but the pixel is slightly smoother and Google have changed the acceleration so it feels a little more like IOS. As far as audio goes, have a watch of Pocketnow's audio review of the pixel, the results are average.

Never had the m8 but I've heard good things, had the m7 and m9 both had great matching speakers. Prefer the 10's sound quality though.

Some people using leedroid have said that its smoother. More fluid. I haven't committed yet, I'll flash this Sunday maybe..
The app opening and app switching is not by a couple of milliseconds. However the rest is pretty much on par.
This means that maybe on video the Pixel opens apps a tiny bit faster, but when something is really demanding, bot devices struggle equally

Just ordered a pixel for my daughter. I'll have a benchmark vs when she opens it on Xmas, see who wins. Have to say, pure android is a fluid system, only reason why I came back to htc was I missed sense, avoided the 10 and got the 6P as I had read that they were going with a sub par chip set, then ironically they went with the sd820, classic [emoji30]
But I have to say, the 6P the 10 the pixel, the difference is so marginal it doesn't even merit an argument, yes you'll see slight differences here and there but so long as its not lagging or halting all the time it's a difference that you'll never notice.
(Me in January, yes my good man I'd like a pixel please it's how much? Jesus, take the cash)
Then the 11 will drop and i'll be giving it to a family member. Happens a lot with me, I'm very unlucky.
Also have to say and very off topic and probably sacrilegious here, but the Samsung S8 is probably going to be a beast of a phone, they've got a lot to make up for, now if only they did a vanilla version, I'd be on board in a heart beat, least until the next htc came out.. [emoji16]

Theres no lags but both device pixel and v20 running Nougat so you feel the phones are faster than htc10

Hi everyone,
I need some advices. I have to buy a new smartphone, I had an LG G4 before but got the well known bootloop issue. It was 6 months ago.
Since then, didn't buy anything but really need one right now. So I have to choose between 2 devices: HTC 10 or LG V20. It's almost the same price.
I was an huge HTC Fan but got a lot of problems with their after sale services with my M8 and Desire Eye.
For LG, I'm really afraid of another bootloop issue with this V20.
I didn't find any comparison between these 2 flagships but I have a lot of questions.
First of all, on the video recording. On some YouTube videos, OIS on HTC 10 seems better than V20. Sounds recording seems great(if not better) also on HTC 10, or am I wrong? I really loved manual control on my previous G4 and glad that V20 got that on video recording, but is this really an advantage with this awful shaky OIS?(I hate the one on G4 and it's look like the same)
Secondly, the battery lifetime: on some reviews, I saw that V20 endurance was not so good, but how about the HTC 10?
And finally, on the headphone output: Is there an huge difference between the HTC 10 and LG V20? DAC or QuadDAC? Didn't find any comparison...
It's very hard for me to choose, it will be my daily smartphone for the next 2~3 years so I don't want to make a mistake. I love the 5.7" LG's big screen and removable battery but still love and really want to come back on HTC brand, Ultrapixel Camera render and Sense. Don't want to go for a Galaxy device....
So, if you had to choose between these 2, which one would you take and why? I'm waiting for your help and reply and thank you in advance.

I can go for a long list what I hate on the 10.

If you really need a phone right now I will suggest get S8,or anything cheap such as MI and one plus. The soon release mi 6 is cheap and got 835, 6gb ram, but no ,3.5mm and only 1080p.

Thanks for the reply, S8 is a beast but it's so expansive. I found an One Plus 3T at almost the same price as HTC 10 and V20 but didn't really think about it. Is it a good one? And also have a look on Huawei P10.

It is a tough choice for 10 between 3T, for V20 I will not consider as I am afraid of if any bootloop issue in future and bad photo quality.
3T had touch screen lag problem, just fix in recent firmware but dunno how good it is. P10 totally against it, 1. it use 3 different kind of flash, from very slow to super fast, it like a lucky draw, 2. it lack of oleophobic coating, what the hell a modern smartphone lack of this? 3. CPU still not good enough for a flagship device
if you will flash custom rom then htc 10 is a good one, consider the hardware not so bad (except the nfc and weaker wifi reception).
If you go for 10, check the screen, it either Sharp panel or Tianma panel, talk about color accuracy (sRGB) the Tianma is better, but the Sharp panel is a little bit brighter and wider view angel, but will have some visible line on it. google the different before choose.
Actually the 10 will be my last HTC device, I can't understand how come they still can't fix the volte issue. I also have some app incompatible issue but not on my wife s7 edge.
p.s. It can't tell it is which panel until you look at the screen.

only reason to choose the V20 over the 10 is if sound quality is one of the top 3 features you want from a smartphone. That said, if you don't have, or don't plan on getting, great headphones then the V20's sound quality advantage becomes irrelevant. The 10's DAC is great and is at the top in comparison to other smartphones, but isn't quite on par with the V20. In all other aspects though the 10 is a better smartphone

I just want to share my opinion about HTC 10.
HTC was once my favourite smartphone company, because of its audio quality and UI design. I used HTC one m7 for almost 4 years without any major issues and finally bought HTC 10 on November 2016, The performance was good and Camera is also good but not the best, galaxy s7 edge has better camera. but still audio recording and sound quality was top class. I updated to nougat on january end and it was working perfectly for about a month. however my faith in HTC has got down not long ago, ever since my HTC 10 became useless on the account of bootloop issue on february 2016.
I bought the device from another country and warranty is available only in that country, anyhow i had sent it for replacement and one of my friend who was in HTC service centre told me that he had seen 12 other HTC 10 phones sent for similar bootloop problems.
I'am waiting for the replacement of my HTC 10 for one n half months. When I recieve the device, first thing i'm gonna do probably is sell it !

And what do you think about the brand-new LG G6? Did you heard something bad or weird about that one?
In my country I could find it for 599 euros right now, one month ago it was 750 !!!! what's happened? Bootloop again ?

it's said that after s8 launch they dropped the price to sell more or so. the phone looks okay, but i'm not pleased with LG and Samsung

because outdated CPU + camera sensor, same as HTC U ultra
and for G6 you will not receive the full spec unless you get the US or korea version, as I know US got wireless charge and Korea + some asia country got qual dac, feel weird?
p.s. the HTC U ultra sapphire limited edition give a large discount even when pre order to make it cheaper then S8 in my region

As a music producer and audiophile, I totally agree. The V20 has made strides in mobile DACs and audio processing in terms of handling impedance and super low noise floor; needles to say it drives my HD 650's pretty well. I don't know if I would agree with the above statements on camera quality... it takes great pictures. I will say that the one thing that irks me about the phone is its UI. At times, it handles multiple applications well, and other times having a few music applications open as well as messenger applications is enough to frustrate me. Not exactly sure what causes it but considering a re-flash soon. I just don't want to risk loosing my DAC upon install of a new rom.

I don't have a ton of experience with LG's UI, but it seems to be almost as lightweight as Sense 8. A major problem with a stock version of Sense 8 is that HTC sets it's kernel parameters to be way too conservative which causes hiccups similar to what you describe on your LG. So it's possible the same thing is happening.
I did some reading on the V20 forums and noticed some saying the Lineage based ROMs still sounded great. None of them had any HD 650s, but, as I'm sure you know, audio "quality" is highly subjective so it might sound degraded to your ears. I'd try it and if the audio sounds worse just go back to stock.

Alright I'd be willing to try that! My only problem is I've always had issues reverting to stock after a flash. My Evo from back in the day was the worst at that.

All you'd have to do is make a full backup in TWRP before you flash a rom. Then if you don't like the rom just restore from TWRP
HTC One M8 is the best phone I have ever come across, its been 4 years and it is slow now. I'd buy one more (if available) but there have been a lot of technological advancements. I want to buy a new phone in the near future that is as mighty as M8 and has the same user base. Still when I come to this thread I see something new going on, this community never stops. I want a phone with complements. Having all of you guys makes it easy to resolve any problem, so many of you developers bringing out new things for us with lack of technical know how. HTC phones are out of picture especially after the deal with Google. Any latest phone or to be launched that you guys will recommend?

I bought the OnePlus 3T a year ago, and no regrets. It's a great phone. I only hang out in the M8 section still, to help folks out.
The 3T was superceded by the 5, then the 5T (there was no 4, as it a bad luck number in China). If I were to get a new phone today, it would probably be the 5T. One review called it the best Android phone, at any price. That may be arguable. But it's definitely one of the best phones for the price (cheaper by hundreds $ US than Samsung S8, Pixel 2, etc.).
Just as important, OnePlus phones have a great community here on xda. That was the other big reason for my purchase of the 3T.
If not for the 4mpx camera, I'm sure the M8 would be considered the best android phone ever created. With the weak camera it's "only" considered one of the best. IMO this phone had everything you wished for when it was released.
My M8 will die someday and it will be a very sad day. I'll have to get a new phone of course, but m8 has spoiled me so much that I think there's simply no better phone feature wise even now.
If I was to choose now, I'd think between LG V30, Sony Xperia XZ Premium or XZ1, strongly leaning toward the LG. If I was really low on budget I'd settle for HTC 10.
As redpoint73 said, OnePlus 5T would be a great choice too, considering the quality to price ratio. Personally I wouldn't buy it as I find it lacking in some aspects, but it's still a good phone.

I would highly recommend the M9, they are cheap to buy now and Octa Core with 3GB ram, that's some real punch. They are also identical in shape and size to the M8, have a good following on here and well built!!
I bought a ZTE Axon 7 over a year ago because my M8 had bad battery life (I didn´t want to replace it after seeing some tutorials) and my top speaker didn´t work anymore.
The Axon 7 has a similar look. It is all metal, has dual speakers which are pretty loud with a good quality and has a great 1440p OLED screen. The camera is also much better with OIS, 20MP and 4K video recording.
The modding community is also very active and ZTE is even supporting the devs of LineageOS with code so they can get Oreo working on the device.

The HTC 10 is a very nice upgrade, if you're going to go "low-ish" budget.
If I had to replace my M8, I would go with either the HTC 10 ($350) or the new U11 (now $550) - if anything because it's waterproof with good build quality and camera.

No budget constaints, also HTC will minimizing if not closing its operations in the smart phone segment as most of the talent is given to google in billion dollar deal. Any other recommendations?

If you don't like my recommendations, then do your own @#$% homework!
Shop around for the features you want in a smartphone and buy the one that meets the highest number of your needs.
I gave a couple of good recommendations, so if you don't like them don't whine and ask for other recommendations please.

Axon 7 looks like a great phone. It really looks like a good successor to the "spirit" of the M8, with a serious emphasis on the audio experience (with the front facing speakers like the M8). The only thing that was holding me back, was the (almost complete) lack of developer support for previous ZTE devices. But (surprise to me) the Axon 7 really caught on, and looks to be enjoying some really great support, as you mentioned.
