[Q] Help required in upgrading from HTC One X. (M8?) or (M9?) - One (M9) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys. I have been an ardent HTC supporter from the day I got my HTC One X way back in August 2012. Even though the phone still is swift and runs awesomely well for my needs, it's camera has taken a toll (front and back both). I have been waiting for the release of this year's M9 (Hima) and I'm almost at the point on buying it once it hits the stores in my country (India). But I have been comparing the M9 with M8 and I'm having a tingling doubt. M8 is about 60% of the expected price of M9 in my country.
So here is my question. Should I go for M8 or M9 or wait for M9+ to hit the stores? The feasibility of M9+ coming to my country is pretty low.
One constraint I have is that whatever phone I go for, I'll be using it for at least 5-6 years and my primary mobile. (Yes, I maintain my phones in a pristine condition. HTC One X of mine doesn't look more than a couple of months old still. :good
P.S. I have a $150-$175 sale price for my HTC One X in the markets here, the money which I can use to buy my new phone.

I absolutely loved the M7. The camera I had had no purple tint problem, and it was fast and a good size. The M8 was also brilliant. The M9 has let me down. It doesn't perform quite as well as the M8, with lag here and there and low performance in games. Also the camera is a let down.
I'd get more opinions rather than just mine though as i'm feeling really bitter and jaded right now lol.

Wait until HTC has released some more software updates and ask again. The M8 wasn't as good at its release as it is now thanks to some major updates. The performance of the M9 will increase in the coming months due to some software tweaks that HTC probably will release. I switched to M9 from an M7 and I think it is better in some ways but not as much as I'd hoped.

Is it worth upgrading?

Hey One X community, I wish to ask you if it's still worth upgrading from Sensation XE to One X these days? Or maybe is it better to wait untill HTC One drops of it's price?
Both are good phones, but if you're looking to buy, go for the One instead.

Flog your sensation on eBay, throw in a few more beans and buy a used one x. It will make you very happy till the price of a new One drops. I came from sensation to one x and still very happy with it. Just be aware you can't soff it unless you buy one that has it from factory. It just means your tied to flashing roms from your pc otherwise its no bother.

I wanted to switch from Sensation XE to either One X or One next month or if prices will be still too high on november, december. I really like features that One brings in to mobile market ( Boomsound, Snapdragon 600 etc.) but I don't really want to spend my entire money on mobile device. One X is cool but I'm afraid of HTC dropping it's support as I get it (the same thing that happend to me as I got my Sensation). If I want to buy a phone then I require it to last for some time.

Well the HTC phones are very good ,BUT they really lack support from HTC ( software department ), especially when it comes to upgrading to newer versions of android ,and i really don't understand why HTC does not upgrade their phones especially older models. They really dont know what they are doing. SAMSUNG IS MUCH BETTER WHEN IT COMES TO SOFTWARE UPGRADE. In my opinion buy an GS4

Is it still worth buying an one m8?

Why you need a smartphone ??!!
For all your needs HTC One M8 can get the job done well.
buy it now and you will never feel sorry.
I tried so many smartphones LG G3, Galaxy S5 & iPhone 6 for some time but at the end I decide to get the M8, and for me it is the best smartphone I ever used.
Same here tried a hell of a lot of devices they all suck except the m8 best ever !

I am coming from nexus 5, g2, and s5 to HTC m8. I kinda regret waiting so long switching to m8. It's definitely one of the best smartphone I ever had. Build quality is top notch with amazing speakers. Battery life is really good and I really like sense features. Camera is decent but that's not the main reason why I bought it. I usually take pictures with my dslr.
i previously had xperia z2, then galaxy s5 and now HTC m8. and there is no doubt M8 is best among them. and i think it is still worth to buy one. amazing speed, good camera, beautiful finishing.
I've also tried all the top of the line phones and switched to new phones monthly, and than I got a m8 and the switching stopped.

Whether the phone is "worth it" to you, isn't a question other people can answer for you. It depends on what you have now, what you need the phone for, how much the money means to you, etc.
Its a great phone, and I can honestly say its probably still the best phone you can get at this time. Meaning, if I lost or broke my M8 and had to buy another phone for full price; I'd most likely just buy another M8.
On the other hand, if you have a decent phone now, there is likely going to be an impressive new HTC flagship coming in April. So you may want to wait. On the other hand, some folks switch phones like I change my underwear. So it really depends on you.

I think it's time to move on from HTC?

Very little developing going on. M8 receives 6.0 before m9 think nexus will be my new phone . Sad because I've owned every HTC phone released to Rogers in Canada seriously disappointed with them anyone else have an opinion
I rather enjoy a stable android 5.1 than a buggy 6.0. Hopefully, camera will be improved in 6.0. I'm still in love with htc m9 because of its gorgegous hardware.
As markkenzy said. Stable over latest. No point in having a phone if you cant use it because it crashes all day..
I wish I stole my HTC M9.

You are disappointed in HTC because there is not enough third party development going on? How is that HTC's fault? Oh wait, you are disappointed that the M8 gets updated before the M9 and feel that it is a reason to dump HTC. I find that silly. Well, you won't be disappointed with development for Nexus. I went from HTC to Nexus and back to HTC. I had plenty of fun when I had my Nexus. You will also always get updates first with the Nexus. This is probably a good choice for you based on what you place as most important.
I had the nexus 4 and went back to HTC, I've had all the HTC flagships over the last 4 years and I love HTC. I sold my M9 and got a nexus 6P and it's the best decision I made. The sad thing is I don't miss sense or HTC anymore. Battery that lasts over a day, a camera that can take pictures at night time is enough to make me realise HTC made a poor device. It makes me sad that the forums for the m9 are pretty quiet too. Hope HTC pick it up, they're my favourite phone manufacturer but even I'm not going to stay with them if they can't make a device that can compete with the latest

I'm with you- I've had HTC for 7 years now...
Though I understand their plight, they still make the highest quality android devices. It isn't plastic, has a good heaviness to it (Though I preferred the M8's heavier weight). I would love to see HTC make the next Nexus phone. That would give them a refreshing boost.
Other than that, I am skipping the A9. I got my M9 in April 2015, so I would like to hold on to it for a long time. Of all my HTC phones, I've used them all for two years each.

I also came to the M9 from a Nexus 4. For me, the Nexus 4 felt cheap (it was) and the screen was horrible and you could barely hear the external speaker. It also got a lot of complaints in regards to the camera. But for the price, it was a good phone. I'm sure the 6P is much better, but I'm finding the M9 to be a really nice phone. It has a solid build and runs really smooth. I haven't had any of the overheating issues others have had and the battery will last me all day, around 16 hours, on moderate usage. The camera was touch and go at start, but with all the updates, it is greatly improved. I find it sufficient for on the go shots and if I want better quality, I will switch to RAW. Honestly, I find the camera to be on par with my wife's Note 4. I have made many comparisons.
I'be been with HTC since the legend and have had only HTC since I'm gonna keep my m9 like all my phones get the nexus 6p just to see how it goes I won't jump ship just hope the new HTC flagship is a hit with development

That's the exact same reason I got rid of my nexus 4 and went back to the one s! The phone did feel very cheap. Completely agree with you on the camera on the M9. Don't get me wrong the m9 is a fantastic phone, I had mine since launch as my daily driver till now. I think in good lighting picture quality is truly amazing. I just couldn't get anything decent from low light situations. Marshmallow should bring a lot of improvements to the device which will be well received.

I wanted to stick with Nexus, but at the time, it was the Nexus 6 that was out and I didn't want a screen that big. I don't like TouchWiz and have always had poor experiences with Samsung phones. The M9 was the most current premium phone out that fit my needs and taste, plus I have always liked HTC phones.
If I move from HTC, the next phone will be iphone

M9 or wait for M10

I just had to return my M9 due to my IR blaster not work. I had the phone for about a week and REALLY enjoyed it. If I had to complain about anything it would be the battery. But debloating seamed to drastically improve the batteries performance and I was not quite finished debloating when I sent it back. I'm coming from a Nexus 5 just to give you an idea of what I'm comparing the batteries performance to.When I returned the phone Amazon had run out of stock on the Gun Metal Gray version and the listing was updated to, Manufacture disconnected.
I now sit here pondering if i should hold off a bit or spend 649$ and buy the phone from HTC's website. When I had the M9 it seemed like a couple roomers popped up on the M10. I'm not a big fan of the larger screen but the rest does intrigue me. I'm just worried I'll play the wait for something better game and never decide on a phone. Especially since the launch date still seems to be a heavily rumored April.
So my question to you all is would you recommend waiting for the M10 or just buy the M9 again for 649? My main reason for asking is like I said, I only had the phone for a week. I'd like to hear from people who have history with the M9 and what they would do if they were in my shoes.

Ive had the m9 since september last year, and i got no problems with it whatsoever. Had the guts of rooting my phone last week on MM. Nice experience, but if i would buy a new phone today, id probably go for the 6P. But thats just my opinion. Id suggest that you wait until the m10 drops and see if you like it first.

Thanks for the input.
I would go with the 6p in a heart beat its just to big for me. I don't want to go larger then a 5.2" screen.
As for the 5x I need more storage then 32GB. That's another reason why I liked the M9 is the expandable memory.
I love my M9, but I'd never pay $649 for it. Got mine last summer on swappa for around $400...you should check what's there now. But the price will come down even further if you can wait until the M10 comes out. Then again, the M10 may be worth going with, due to its SD 820 and better battery efficiency.
But I'm very happy with my M9...switch between it and my Moto Maxx.
i got m9 just one month after launching market i had really bad experience ( Bad battery , Camera , Design ( M8 was better) , thermal problem . its been several years iam using HTC flagship phones every year iam upgrading to new one but this M9 after one month i gave it my sister now iam with G4 waiting M10 and you should wait M10 .
The consensus is that it's much improved now vs. when it launched (due to software updates/optimizations, etc.). A good discussion is here regarding its update to Marshmallow:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3304457
HTC One M9 Lollipop vs Marshmallow Comparison
The ONLY thing that keeps me happy about my m9 is boomsound. Nothing more.
I'd happily trade in if i could find another stereo device of equal spec.

I'd hold off at this point for the m10. Especially if you are going to pay full price for the m9.

Well I ended up picking up the M9 from BestBuy for 389. Paid about 50$ more compared to the one I got from Amazon but this one comes with a proper US warranty. If I would of had to pay full price I probably would of waited.
I noticed a couple hardware differences with the att version compared to the developer version I got from Amazon. But it's already imaged as a developer version and I'm near the end of my debloat process. Battery life is good and storage is nice and plentiful.
Thanks for the input everyone but I guess I'm a little to impatient.
P.s. - I do have the v2.1 810

Best Buy has some great deals ..My partner at work got 2 Galaxy S6 edge plus this morning for $214 and $200 in gift cards
they also had the Galaxy S6 edge for a penny and the same $100 gift card (he's on Sprint and was up for contract renewal )
Seems crazy their paying people $100 to take their samsung phones right now
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/samsung...rint/4424016.p?id=1219627836413&skuId=4424016
i got it for just 210$ (2nd phone but it pretty new). really cheap for a flagship
the only problem i have is bettery life (i move from droid turbo)
I bought the m9 after my m7 died...it should be here Monday. I was so in love with my m7 that I did not even bother reading reviews on the m9 -- big mistake. I have since checked into it further and am wondering if i should have purchased the galaxy s6...

Don't worry, the M9 is a much better phone than the m7 or m8. The reviews are old and wrong. The have nothing to do with the m9 on marshmallow. It's an outstanding device.

That's what I am hoping for! I have been trying to find some recent reviews and it seems they are all from 2015. I was really bummed when I saw the poor camera and battery performance....I am hoping the update fixed both of these. I cannot believe the battery is larger in the m9 but reviews said how it drained much faster than the s6. I also wish the m9 had a fingerprint sensor, but I figure I can live with out it since I have not had a phone with it yet.
M9 ****ntastic go fo it pal.

Looking to buy m8

Hey guys i had g2 and g3 now i think i will go with htc one m8, since you guys know the device, do you have other suggestions? I choose m8 because it is cheap and i liked it back then... I prefer buying an old model, and having a good community on xda...
M8 is a bit over 220usd in here, because of taxes.
220 bucks for an m8 in late 2017....just drop the idea man...its way too much than what it should be, even more than double the reasonable price if u ask me.
I bought a sprint m8 just a while back for around 100usd and even then I believe I paid a lot more than what I got eventually.
The problem with buying an m8 this late is that the battery would have lost its original capacity and just won't hold up charge(this was the case with my device), and u wud surely require a battery replacement.
Otherwise the m8 is an awesome device with development still active. The best VFM device if u can grab one at 100~120usd(220 wud be a no brainer for me)
I can only agree with the poster above. Way too much for this old device.

Yeah that shud make more sense and cost a lot more less too, but its just not possible for everyone, considering how complex the internalities of the m8 are.
Nor is everyone a risk-taker
Anyways. I'm planning to disembark from the HTC ship very soon by trading my m8 with a OPO(I tragically bought a Sprint one which can't run 4g on networks outside the states)
And thanks for ur reply

How much can you buy a OnePlus 3 where you are? I'm seeing prices in the US around $250-300. Just a bit more, for a phone that is a couple generations newer, much faster, and a huge XDA community which is still very strong. Where the M8 community is getting pretty quiet. I loved my M8 and the community here. And everyone's situations is different. But to me, the M8's time is past.
