Slow Front Camera - One (M9) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Why is nobody talking about how slow the front camera is!? This is truly shocking.
Put your camera into front facing mode, wave it from side to side focused on your face and see that SHEER lag! The lag is so great that you can put the front facing camera on someone stood in front of you, and if you turn the phone around fast enough you can still see that subject on the viewfinder when you turn the screen back to facing you.
I don't know if this is due to the UltraPixel camera, or just shoddy camera software. Surely it shouldn't be like this!? Replicated on two O2UK locked models of the M9. Does anyone else have this? I'd say its about 1 and a half seconds out of sync.

Think there may be a problem on your phone. Mine is pretty snappy on the Ultrapixel. Unlocked UK Model.

I Have lag on mine but not that bad, On unbranded uk model

Turn off the make-up mode or whatever it is called. That makes the camera slow.

That's it, turn the Live Makeup mode off and the camera is fast as hell! Soon realized it couldn't be a hardware issue as Snapchat worked just fine. Cheers!

Blurry Camera

Whenever I try taking a picture it takes a few tries to get it right and not blurry. I noticed many people have not had this problem as there aren't many posts about it but I find it annoying. I am coming from an HTC Sensation and that phone didn't have this problem. I think the blurriness is caused by the slight movement caused when tapping the shoot button. I also noticed that when taking photos with voice commands this problem doesn't show. I already have it on auto focus mode so can anyone tell me what else I can do? Just got it and was trying not to root or flash for awhile at least.
Have you tried gong into your camera settu ng and turned on anti-shake on? Is your lens dirty? Have you dropped your phone? If so you may have jarred something lose...try those first ones and see if that fixes the problem.

Anti-shake should definitely be on. But also, instead of tapping the shutter button, hold it down until you get the beep and green autofocus box on your target. Then, when you release the button, the shot is taken. Much less blur inducing vibration in that motion rather than in tapping. It's amazing the manual doesn't even mention that. "Burst shot" also sometimes yields good results. More pics to sort through later on in that mode, but multiple pics taken all at once increases your chances of finding a more desirable and less blurry shot out of the bunch. Good luck!
The autofocus is on and lens is clean. Also is there any way to make it so that autofocus can account for the camera tap? other than holding the button for a longer time? Any hacks?
Also holding the capture button longer doesn't always give clear shots

Tap the screen where you want to focus then take the pic
So in a situation where I am moving (ie. on a plane, in a car, bus, train) this camera is useless because the phone will not take good pix? I'm sorry if I sound like a brat or anything but a camera is important on a phone as that is my only camera. Maybe a rom can fix this or a hacked version of the camera?

Maybe I'll give it a little time to settle, I just did a factory reset and notice a little lag as well. I did transfer a lot of sms from my old phone using sms backup pro so maybe thats causing it? But hopefully a little time will fix if not then I will try factory resetting without restoring messages.

I'm also disappointed with the camera and don't think you're being a "brat" for expecting more from this phone. Seems like the optics might be poor quality...or maybe the CCD itself. Dunno. But hopefully I'm wrong and dev's can improve the camera's performance by modifying the software at some point. The "premium upgrade" that's due soon and already out for others is supposed to fix the cam's poor low-light capabilities(among other added features), so Samsung has already admitted there are real issues with the cam. If we're lucky the upgrade will fix the other cam related stuff too.
That said, there'll be plenty of people out there willing to argue their T999's take fine pictures...Wait, there's one now! Haha... But unless our particular phones are an exception to the rule, this cam pretty clearly(pun intended) has issues. I certainly wouldn't characterize the cam as "useless" though. In fact, I actually like the video it captures better than it's still photos. All focus, shake and grainyness issues aside, as long as you're prepared to do a little post-shot processing on still photos, the cam takes 'acceptable' quality pics, IMHO.
Of course it's possible we do have bad devices. In fact, I've had multiple issues with this S3(including something like the "lag" you mentioned, interestingly enough) and will have a replacement by early next week because of those issues. I'll let you know if my new phone takes better quality photos.
Hey just to update, my camera seems to have gotten better. I messed around with it and even turned off anti-shake and turned it back on. Maybe it was just me not being able to handle the bigger phone (not as comfortable to hold, well at least without practice). But Anvil Vapor try turning off anti-shake and turning it back on. Also mess around with the hdr mode and let box turn green on its own. Pictures are much better now.
Thanks everyone.

Glad to hear you're getting better results! Got my replacement S3 last Friday and have been comparing shots taken with the old and new cams. The replacement fixed every issue I was having with the phone, and it now performs more like I was expecting it to. But for me, holding and then releasing the shutter button to take the shot still captures less blurry pics than when letting it autofocus and tapping the shutter button. I do notice, though, that with the new camera HDR mode results in much less blurry pics than it used to(and maybe even less blurry than single-shot with anti-shake ON/OFF, now). So maybe the camera was bad in my old phone, or it had something to do with it's faulty mainboard. Dunno...
But for an 8MP phone camera, it's ok. And close up, macro pics look quite nice! :good:

One X focus issue

I have tried different roms/kernels what not. But i wasn't able to resolve this issue. Camera seems to be fine outdoors. But while I am taking pictures of something close, The camera doesn't focus at all. What so ever. Tried different apps/settings. I bought a unlocked phone from taiwan. It doesn't have warranty in India. So, warranty is out of question.
I am including couple of sample images. Can you guys please help me figure out whats going on?
Thank you, guys.
first of all , i love the view of from your window . I have the same issue as you , but not all the time with closed objects , also when i try to scan the qr code of airdroid it doesn't work no idea why , i have to log on to see my phone (which is fine ) , but as you said i find a focus problem at me too. Try to reset camera to default , worked for me :-??
I did that. But no result.
and another doubt, If it is a hardware issue, how come pictures are good when it is out doors?

Have you looked at the camera lens cover? Smudges and scratches can screw with focal range depending on at what focal distance the mark becomes visible to the sensor.
Smartphone and P&S cameras use exposure-based autofocus systems. As the AF drops focal distance a lens defect can begin to creep into it's focal range, distorting it's ability to gauge proper exposure and therefore focus is off.

When you pan around and stop does the camera attempt to autofocus? Or is it constantly at the same focal distance?
NO, it is not trying to autofous. Focus seems to be fixed. It is adjusting brightness though.
I found myself exactly in the same kind of situation one day. After a few experiments I realized that camera focusing mechanism is no longer working and probably because I had dropped the phone few days earlier. I can still manipulate focus between infinity or macro by tapping the phone quite hard but not too hard. It's working, because of the lens in front of the sensor can move freely. So tapping phones back moves lens away from sensor and you can shoot close ups, tapping front on the screen (just be carful) moves lens closer to sensor and you get infinity focus.
Just ordered new replacement camera. Let's see how that goes.
I hope I made any sense.

Thats it. That did it. Now I can do macros.
Felling good after figuring out what is wrong. But its awful to know that I have a hardware issue. I didn't dropped the phone even once. I am taking care of it like it is a baby. I got the phone couple of weeks go. Damn. How much will the replacement cost. approximately?

Well, if it's a new phone then it should go under warranty and shop or authorized service center will probably fix it for free. In my case the phone is no longer under a warranty and I will replace camera myself. Found one in e-bay. There are quite a lot of options. Wheater those are real deals and will the camera be the model that fits remains to be seen when I get mine this week. I will deffinitely post my experience replacing the camera.
The phone is not under warranty. Will take it to local HTC service center and will enquire about the possibilities.
having the same issue on different roms
As promised here is my experience with camera replacement. Few people in this forum have have shared their experience with replacement cameras and mainly those have been not good since they got wrong camera module. It's actually quite a bit gamble, when you buy camera module from eBay, because many sellers don't actually post correct specs and you really don't know what you are getting. For example, HOX+ camera does not work correctly on HOX. Maybe some models do but you never know.
I was lucky and the module I got http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130968093640 was right one and I must say that probably my original camera was a bit faulty since day one, because I never got this kind of quality as I do now.
Word of caution though, taking HOX apart is really quite tedious and delicate job. Specially when you need to remove also the motherboard. So find and study instructions on this forum and on Youtube before you are going to attempt to do it on your own.

[Q] Freaky front camera distortion?

Is anyone else experiencing front facing camera distortion?
I'm too embarrassed to take selfies or even use snapchat because of the craziness it does to my head and face.
Try it and tell me if yours does it, put your forehead in the top of the frame, or your chin at the bottom. It totally warps your face. The camera makes my head small when it's in the middle yet makes my nose huge when it's up close. Stock camera app or third party app, it's still there. The distortions are actually ridiculous.
This is too unacceptable for a phone which was supposed to have an awesome front-facing camera. I'm probably going to take it back and wait for 64-bit phones if there is no solution for this. I'll take a low field of view versus such heavy distortion any day.
I have not experienced anything like that ever - for me it's actually been the best front facing camera I've had.
Beauty face was on by default by quite a bit which can make pictures look really weird sometimes, so maybe check that? I'm not sure what else could cause that.

This was a known issue in GS5, but it turned out that it wasn't an actual problem! it's a wide angle lens on the front camera that the edges distort the image a little bit. So if you use different resolution, the faces won't look distorted!! hope this helps~
Maybe ya ain't such a BEAUTY FACE after all... ?

I can't use a different resolution in apps such as Snapchat (the only time I actually take selfies). Hopefully a custom rom/app will fix this later. For certain angles the distortion is just terrible, though.

I have a beautiful face, the Note 4 is worse than an unflattering camera, it literally distorts the hell out of it.

I have the same problem, had a lg g3 and I am disappointed
Yeah I have this problem too. It's distorted and also very laggy. It's a very wide camera angle too. I'm hoping there's going to be a module to fix it.
The one solution that I have is to turn a filter on the front facing camera and see if that fixes it. I know you can't use those filters on Snapchat but try it and see if it's any better.
That's odd there's multiple people reporting this. When I read the OP I assumed you had a faulty front camera. My front camera is MUCH better than any other phone I've had! I didn't think even had a wide angle lense but simply offered the option for "Wide-Selfie", which is similar to Panorama on the rear camera.
Wide angle lenses all suffer from this issue. The note has a wide angle lens, the only way to avoid this is to stay away from the edges of the screen.
Note 4 camera distortion
My note 4 is experiencing the same problems, I absolutely love this phone but I am so disappointed with the front camera distortion, especially in snap chat. If anyone can help. please let me know.
Note 4 camera distortion SOLVED!
I know this thread is quite old but I wanted to share the solution I found which is simply to change the picture size or more specifically the aspect ratio. I believe the default photo size on Note 4 is 3.7 M with 16:9 aspect ratio, if you change to 4:3 aspect ratio the distortion goes away. No more cone head

THANK YOU SO MUCH! Your solution worked for me on my LG V20!!! I've been wondering about this issue for the last couple of years actually, especially when I had the S3 and S5. I didn't realize it was actual problem with Android phones until I Googled a couple days ago and found this thread! Thanks again for saving my sanity! LOL! ???

Now that there's root, fix camera issue?

Is there a way to change the annoying feature of the camera (only issue I have) that just loves to float around? Holding camera still, it still moves around which drives me NUTS!
Hmm what issue is that? I shook my phone around just now, and all it did was focus quickly, then stood still.
do you notice any drift when you lay the phone on a table or a cell phone mount? any other movement might be just phone trying to focus to your small hand movements.
Are you referring to the OIS, cause that's normal if so. Not an issue to my knowledge..

Hmmm, I don't have this problem. If my hand is slightly moving the image stays relatively still, and if my hand is still the image is perfectly still.

I've just noticed the camera drifts even when I'm perfectly still, it may be the OIS but to me that's an issue and is ridiculously annoying as I can't zoom into anything because it just moves all over the damn place. Wonder if we can fix that somehow with root
If I'm not mistaken, OIS is controlled on the board of the camera. Due to this, there may be no way to control it. I would maybe stop into a Verizon store and play with a floor model. If the floor model doesn't exhibit this behavior than I would try to exchange your current device for a new one.
I personally do not have any issues with drift. The only I experience that floating look is when my hand is moving when trying to aim the camera.
If I rest the camera on something stationary, then zoom in fully to 8X, I will see the image move around. I don't notice it when zoomed out.
I have seen this on at least one other Verizon G4, as well.
Those who don't see the image moving around, can you reproduce it if you try it the way I described above?

Irrelevant sound/noise from camera

Hi guys.
I have a problem in recent days with my 10. I explain it with some examples.
When I'm working in other apps like Telegram, Viber, Instagram and ... I hear a sound from my phone. It's something like activity of camera lenz. If you want to hear it on your phone you can go to camera and switch between front and rear camera.
My question is why ? When I don't use the camera, why it's lenz should make this sound? Go for check in HTC phone repair?
Regards.

I think it's front camera, I can hear it when I switch from selfie to front. But it's nearly inaudible on my device.
Yes, this is a normal sound. Going back to my first phone with a front facing camera (HTC Evo 4G *worst naming ever*). I was all in a tizzy back when live wallpapers became a thing. So of course, I had a 'see through' wall paper, which was just either your front or rear camera being used to 'show through' the phone. Looked cool for awhile, got old though.
Anyway.
Any time I unlocked my phone, I would feel/hear that clicking after awhile. Once you're aware that it makes that noise, you can never really tune it out unfortunately, on any device. You'll notice this on everything more than likely now, like I do. lol
TL/DR:
All devices with digital camera lenses make this barely audible 'clicking' noise. This is the camera simply doing it's thing. Don't stress!
Not all digital camera lenses. More specifically, ones with OIS tend to have audible sound as the lens is stabilized to prevent shaking.
