FireTV XBMC installed captcha help - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok guys, I've got XBMC/KODI installed on the fire box and it's working brilliantly. However, I've installed a repo to get hold of some more items to watch and when I attempt to access this particular add-on it asks for a captcha but there is no visible captcha to allow me to enter anything using either the onscreen or physical keyboard so it won't allow me to access the content? Any ideas

using kodi a long time now and don't recall coming across any captchas...I use a bare bones setup with tvaddons using addon installer to get the few addons I need and just that gives me access to just about any media I can imagine. Be weery of what repos you use. Its like anything else you download, there's safe and malicious. I have no reason to think the repo you got is bad but its just a heads up, depending on what you want there might be better options.

The thread is kind of useless if you are not gonn tell us what addon you are having problems with so that we can see if it happens to us too. I use other addons that involve captcha popups, but it depends on the stream and not the addon. Some sites require captcha input for streams. A good example is the "TV-Release" addon, all their streams in the addon require you to solve a captcha, but I have never had a problem doing so. Maybe its not the addon causing the problem, maybe its your skin that is not letting the captcha popup, or maybe its entirely something else. Its hard to know a solution without knowing what addon you are talking about. Please reply with the name of the addon. Also, change your skin and see if that helps. I have used skins in the past that would not show captchas.

Sorry but as stupid as this may seem I wasn't sure about the rules mentioning add ons etc but the add on in question is 1channel ie primewire. Is it a question of trying out various skins to see if any work. The other problem is that because I wasn't able to input the captcha it shut me out of the add on?

I have never had a captcha popup while opening 1channel. I have had to solve captchas for certain links with 1channel, but never to open the addon. What you need to do is uninstall it manually. Find your Kodi folder and delete the 1channel folder from the addons folder, delete the 1channel folder from the addon data folder and delete the 1channel db files from the database folder. Reinstall 1channel, but make sure you install it from the tvaddons.ag repo. If you haven't got that repo, google for directions on how to install it.

Maybe not been clear, I can open the add on without problem and I can go to the TV series folder and view any one of the programs. But when I go to the movies folder and try and open one of the movies, that's when I got the captcha come up. Because I couldn't enter the captcha it booted me back into an empty folder. I can still go into the TV series without problem

Like I said, its normal to have to solve captchas to watch certain streams. I frequently have to solve captchas to watch movies or TV shows. Not sure why you are not able to enter captchas. Does the stream you are trying to watch have several sources? If so use a different source that does not require a captcha. Heres what we are gonna do, tell me the movie you are trying to watch and I will see if the same happens to me. It is a certain movie thats causing the problem right, or is it all movies that you try to watch?

The movie I attempted to watch was "Last Knights". I reinstalled 1channel and instead of booting me out of the listing when I failed to enter the captcha I returned to the movie listing and can view other movies without a problem, well so far that is. So possibly just Last Knights that is causing the problem

I just had no problem playing the movie. I tried every link and only a couple required a captcha, and there is exactly 30 different link sources. When you click on the movie there should be a popup with all the different link sources for the movie, if one does not work, click on the movie again and try a different source. Some sites require you to solve captchas to watch content so depending on the website that the link is from you may have to solve a captcha, but for Last Knights there were only a couple sources that required a captcha to be solved. I exclusively use 1channel for reruns and movies, but there are several other addons that basically do the same as 1channel, so you might wanna try watching the movie from another addon. 1channel is far from perfect, it has several quirks like everytime I watch an episode from my favorites it sends me back to the addon screen and if I hit back it sends me back to my favorites, but I still think its the best addon for TV and movies. Is your version of 1channel 2.5.64?

Well, this is a strange one. I currently have two fire tv boxes, one in the bedroom and one in the living room. When I open up 1channel in the bedroom I can navigate to both tv series and movies without a problem. However, when I use the one in the living room I can access tv series but when I attempt to open the movies section it immediately tells me I have to type the image on the screen to proceed. Obviously I cannot see any image as this was my original problem so when I quit it just takes me to a blank directory. No matter what I do I cannot get passed the "type image on screen to proceed". I even attempted to uninstall 1channel and reinstall but when I open it up again all the settings are still there from the original setup so it still won't allow me to enter the movies section. How can I completely wipe the box of 1channel and setting so I can try to start afresh?

Kindle for Android mods

I love my kindle for Android! Being able to make notes and highlight is awesome. I read in the dark with the fonts white and the backgroud darkend...my wife is not disturbed in bed anymore with reading lights. Lately, the weather has chilled a bit here in SoFla so I like reading on the pool patio in the dark. Thanks to calibre, I can take all my .pdf books and convert them to .mobi...but...
My problem is:
I read from two devices (for example: Dell Sreak 5 and Toshiba Thrive and work with .mobi files on the laptop. So I've got two Androids and a pc that I switch back and forth. The laptop is NOT very important because I doen't read w/ it. Just proof files w/ it. As you are likely aware, I cannot sync my notes, etc accross the devices.
I see two problems. I want my Kindle for Android app to refer to a cloud (like dropbox) for books.
...and I want it to store the notes, highlights, etc there too. Or at least sync them to the cloud location.
I figured out how to get the app to sync with the cloud in a rudimentary way. I used foldersync from the market to sync the ../kindle on my local to the ../kindle in my dropbox. This does not have an effect on notes, etc. They do note sync.
From what I know, the Kindle app writes these notes and marks to a text file on the device. I believe that syncing this file to the cloud wont work because it will simple overwrite the older file. It cannot update the actual file contents so I think I require that the Kindle app write notes directly to the cloud. Now I understand this would require I have an internet connection at all times for this to work. I can live with that unless someone can come up with a better idea.
I do not want to break any forum rules so how do I go about getting this done? I am, of course refering to hiring a Kindle Geek to possibly modify the Kindle app for my purposes.
I am not sure if it does notes, but if you use Amazon Calibre plugin to add the amazon id (ASIN) to your .mobi files. I know that furthest page read and bookmarks sync across all of your devices/apps.
I know this isn't exactly what you are looking for but it may still be helpful.

Just update metadata after installing amazon plugin. I'm mobile right now+ will try to find a howto when I get home.
Essentially it finds amazon asin and sets book type to ebok

My apologies if I posted improperly. Since I directed my request to the developers, I figured it belonged here.
Lemmee 'splain were i'm at right now. I stumbled on repligo for .pdf's and wow! It does more than I wanted on the android platform. It integrates with dropbox so the master is easily kept on the dropbox folder and annotations are all kept within the .pdf itself.
My only complaint is there is no dictionary feature for words within the doc and saving is not automatic. You have to push the save periodically or when your done. I had to get used to dropbox cuz it was saving on the cache folder on my sd and changes did not migrate. You must make sure you are working from the cloud version and not your cached version, although I believe that is easily fixed if that did happen.
This option is ok for me, however, I am looking for a more simple scenario. I do not want to set my wife up with this because she doesnt get into the details that much. She just wants a kindle experience with annotations on both of her devices for ebooks that are not on amazon server.
For the moment though, this repligo app has rich features that make this experience wonderful. For me!

Make an app show up on the Home screen?

Has anyone figured out how to get an app to appear on the Fire TV home screen? Is it something programmed into the app, or is the Home screen somehow linked to the Appstore, thus only allowing apps in the Appstore to be listed on the Home screen?

I think it has something to do with a link to the Amazon app store. I've sideloaded a bunch of apps and the only one that showed up on the home screen was Spotify (kindle fire version). When I installed the play version of Spotify it didn't show up on the home screen.

I would place bets that it has to be signed somehow by amazon in order for it to show up on the main screen. Or like the kindle fire they put an option in to allow unauthorized apps.

Koying found this:
From https://developer.amazon.com/sdk/asb/faq.html#General , it appears Amazon checks if an app is sideloaded and doesn't show it on the main screen if it is. One of the way they could do so is to check from which application the apk was installed, which would return nothing when we sideload via adb.

this was my thought too.
so I pulled a copy of spotify from google, and a copy from amazon store. the amazon version does not show up in my apps list like it did for dhayman11. but the only version I could get from amazon was "kindle tablet" whereas dhayman11 said his version was kindle fire.
so the next thing I did was go on the firetv and install pandora.
luckily, the firetv has the same package install method as any generic device with amazon app store: it downloads the apk into
/sdcard/android/data/com.amazon.venezia/files/apks
and then installs it.
and then deletes it lol.
even more luckily, I was able to gank a copy of the apk safely to /sdcard/ on the first try, before it was deleted.
the KF apk of spotify, and the AFTV/KFTV apk of pandora, both have 3 extra files that the google apks do not have. signatures indeed:
KF spotify
com.amazon.content.id.MC-S-2UIMENB7RPX86 2b9caef13142184773d485b1aca955b5

kiwi 96ac1624b345483aa1b393fe52624ddd
KFTV pandora
com.amazon.content.id.MC-S-1UVY84RC4VBZ6 60e678411e0e696dee205591a51609b6

kiwi 96ac1624b345483aa1b393fe52624ddd
so obviously 2 of the files can simply be copied and injected into target apk. but just as obviously, 1 file may have to be generated somehow.
but that 1 apk-specific file contains nothing special, just text (which happens to match the filename)
com.amazon.content.id.MC-S-2UIMENB7RPX86 --
MC-S-2UIMENB7RPX86
com.amazon.content.id.MC-S-1UVY84RC4VBZ6 --
MC-S-1UVY84RC4VBZ6
who knows, maybe it doesn't need to be generated, just referenced in the manifest xml somewhere (haven't gotten around to digging into those just yet...)

of course, the other thing that only occurred to me this morning (which is dumb, because amazon has been talking lots of public talk about it for a while now)
is that repackaging apps with a new signature should be possible with their development tools. and they just happen to have the SDK and eclipse mumbo-gumbo for free download:
https://developer.amazon.com/public/resources/development-tools
(I'm guessing they make their money when you want your app in the amazon store, rather than charging for the sdk which was historically more usual)

Yeah I just tried to replicate it and its not showing up in my "apps library" list now either. Must have been a glitch or something. It was likely the "Kindle tablet" version, rather than "Kindle fire" version, I just remember it said something about being the kindle version.

It probably has to do with the exact app name (com.amazon.bah.blah.blah). I sideloaded updated Plex app (paid app), since amazon store is behind, and it shows on the home screen.
So if it's on the amazon store, and available for Fire TV, and has the same name, then it will probably show regardless of where it came from, version, or if it was sideloaded.

No, it just needs to be signed by Amazon.
Remember, this is the Apple-era, where only losers sell hardware for a profit. The winners make a profit off everything you do with "your" hardware. Amazon didn't make Fire TV so you can have a cheap HTPC box to do as you please, they made it for you to consume content provided by Amazon. This is why you can't have you apps show up on the home screen, this is also why the Home button on the remote can not be rebound or overridden, and this is also why the voice search feature will only give you results from Amazon.

the plex thing, who knows. it's a paid app so that's one major difference with everything else we've been playing with.
it's not the classname - amazon is using the same exact namespace as google and anyone else.
com.amazon.kindle
com.pandora.gtv
com.estrongs.android.taskmanager
etc...
because you don't go messing around with namespaces. no one does. for one thing, changing the classname is a licensing problem - quite likely breaking the law. and in practical terms, you could easily end up having 2 versions of the same app fighting over the same resource media/settings/etc. deadlock and threading issues, dirty reads abound.
if I sideload com.pandora.gtv taken from google, it stays in the kiddie menu.
if I sideload the pandora apk that I ganked from the amazon app store, it goes to the app menu.
but in both cases, running "adb shell pm list packages -f" reports that the firetv sees the app as: com.pandora.gtv
how does the firetv decide what happens when you sideload an app? I don't know. I have a moderately good guess.
there are:
- some extra indicator/tag files
- different RSA signatures/certs (check out META-INF)
- possibly non-trivial differences in the manifest xml
below is some info about some indicator files that are in the amazon apks. but not in non-amazon apks.
you can see that 2 of the files are identical between the 2 apks, but still generically saying hey this is some amazon apk not a regular one.
and then there is 1 file that is different. some sort of specific signature or hash.
(each com.amazon.content.id.$FOO file simply contains "$FOO" - it's some sort of unique generated string but no idea what it relates to)

between this stuff and the RSA certs, that's probably how the firetv is set up to decide how to sort out where to put things.
I imagine similar with OUYA or any platform where this kind of split-userspace thing is going on...

Yeah, that stuff is kinda over my head (I guess I was wrong on that classname stuff). I was mostly pointing out that the latest version of paid Plex app, taken from google play store and sideloaded on Fire TV shows the app on the homescreen, even though the version from amazon is older and different.

yeah that really makes little to no sense I mean, I'm glad it works, and I'm sure plex-using-peoples of the world are very happy. but I have zero clue
right now I am still feeling way too lazy to download the free sdk and learn how to use it. but it does all the correct signing stuff i.e. any app you make with it should go into the grownup app menu on the home screen. and it might even be possible to use it to re-sign apk files from non-amazon sources.

On submission to the Amazon Appstore, Amazon signs all of your apps with a secure key for your account. The resulting hash code is unique to your app and different from any hash codes you may have for that app in different app stores. I wonder if someone can sign up for a dev account, get the hash keys and apply it locally to a sideloaded app and then load it into the fire tv.

Use Llama to lunch XBMC or other Apps from FTV Home
I'm using Llama app to access XBMC from the FTV home page. I downloaded an app from Amazon app store that I was never going to use "Classic TV" and created an event in Llama to launch XBMC instead of the other app.
You can go to the XBMC wiki page for the whole instructions about sideloading to FTV. To get the Llama app go to the developer page and download app for sideloading: http://kebabapps.blogspot.com/.
From XBMC.org Wiki for FTV:
Launch XBMC from an Existing App on the FTV Home Screen
There is a alternative way to invoke XBMC from the FTV Home Screen using Llama. This method uses a “sacrificial” app that you have installed from Amazon that you will use to access XBMC. The app can be anything you have installed but don’t need to use; however, some apps behave better than others (some apps will enter a loop when exiting XBMC). One app that has been tested and works well for this purpose is “Classic TV”.
The advantage of this method is that using the sacrificial app you have Home Screen Access to XBMC and you can exit XBMC to the FTV Home Screen just as you would any other FTV app.
4.1 Prerequisites
Llama side loaded on your FTV.
The app called “Classic TV” from the Amazon app store.
One Llama Event (described below).
4.2 Procedure
Install / side-load Llama.
Install “Classic TV” app from Amazon app store.
Launch Llama (From FireTV - Settings > Applications > Llama > Launch Application).
Go to EVENTS on top menu and click '+' to add a NEW EVENT.
In your NEW EVENT select ADD CONDITION then, from the Menu select 'Active Application' and select 'Choose App’. Scroll through the list of apps until you find “Classic TV” and select this app. Doing this should return you to the Events Menu.
Next, select ADD ACTION and select 'Run Application' from the Menu list. From here, select whatever the name of your XBMC build is. That should create your event. At this point you can also name your event to distinguish it from others.
Now when you start the “Classic TV” app from the Home Screen, it should automatically open XBMC. Feel free to experiment with other apps from the FTV app store. Just be aware that some will loop back and re-start XBMC when you try and exit XBMC to get back to the FTV Home Screen.

Is this possible with any other app rather than kodi?

A few good apps

Thought I would share some apps.
These apps are Google Apps for nonrooted devices. I say nonrooted, cause I assume people with rooted devices have already installed these apps.
1) Install Google Accounts Manager, reboot
2) Install Google Services Framework, reboot
3) Install Google Play Services, reboot - Latest working version 7.0.99
4) Install Play Store and login
http://www.4shared.com/rar/xFL01jekce/Google_Apps.html
Side Note: Google Play Store will not function correctly on nonrooted devices, but it still does things in the background so keep it installed. You can now install apps that need Google Play Services to run.
Live TV Streaming Apps. Mobdro, Live Stream Player, Mediahhh and World Sports Streams
http://www.4shared.com/rar/qgiPSrXhba/Live_TV_Streaming.html
Side Note: World Sports Streams uses XMTV Player and MX Player for all streams. I have provided XMTV Player but you will have to install MX Player, cause I use the pro version and I am not giving a paid app for free.
Third Party App Stores. Blackmart, Mobogenie, Aptoide and 1Mobile Market. These are great for installing apps and updating apps without needing Google Play. Also takes away the need for ADB sideloading.
http://www.4shared.com/rar/fXOGmk_pba/Third_Party_App_Stores.html
Tips: If you are gonna use the third party app stores do not auto update. Update apps one at a time and look at the version numbers to make sure its an actual update and not a down grade. All the apps I have listed in this post work much better with or require a mouse/touchpad to use.

A few good apps that work well on the fire TV that I think have become essential to my Fire TV experience:
DU Speed Booster
SD Maid
Dock4Droid (Best app I have used on the Fire TV)
AOL On (Not the Fire TV Version)
SPMC
Fast Reboot
8 Ball Pool
Facebook Desktop 2 also called FBD2
MirrorOP Reciever
DU Speed Booster and SD Maid for cleaning. I use DU Speed Booster then SD Maid, cause I have never found a cleaner yet for Android that deletes as much junk as DU Speed Booster, but as with all cleaners there is still junk left so I follow it up by cleaning with SD Maid to get even more junk off my device. No matter what cleaner you use SD Maid can still find more junk that can be deleted so I always use two cleaners. Dock4Droid is probably the best app I have found for the Fire TV. It makes the Fire TV so much better. It adds great multitsking and will also let you see app info from anywhere so that you can delete apps, force close apps or delete their data/cache fron anywhere. AOL On for news videos. Not the Fire TV version the version you get from the Play store or third party app stores. It has hundreds of outlets to lets you watch serveral generas of news. Fast Reboot used together with Dock4Droid is awesome. You can add the Fast Reboot shortcut to Dock4Droid and do a fast reboot from anywhere. 8Ball Pool, cause its like turning your TV into a pool table, and its a great game. Must use a mouse or touchpad to play though. FBD2 gives you a desktop version of Facebook without having to use a browser. I don't use Facebook a lot but when I do I use FBD2. MirrorOP Recever does the same as miracast, but its a backup for people that cannot mirror their device to the Fire TV. Just install MirrorOP Sender on the device you wanna mirror.

can you check that 4shared link? I cant seem to download. Tried 2 different devices. Thanks.
All links are correct. You eiither need a free account or login with Facebook, Twitter etc. If you are downloading them on Android, click the link then click download, but sometime it will take you to a different page for some reason, so hit back once and click download again, then pick free download and then either login to your free account or login through Facebook, Twitter etc.

All links I posted are working. Google drive may be better for you, but I use 4shared. I do not use anything just because someone else thinks its better. If you wanna downloaad the files either create a free account or just use you Facebook, Twitter etc to login to 4shared. I refuse to upoad my files to anoter site just because someeone is too lazy to create an account or connect through their Facebook etc.
Not trying to be rude at all, but I refuse to do anything for someeone who just wants me to make it easier for them to do something. It takes 20 seconds to create a 4shared account and 1 second to connect to 4shared with Facebook or Twitter. I have provided the files so if you want them you will have to download them from 4shared.
That's why I hate 4shared,they force you to (risk privacy) make an account.
It has NOTHING to do with laziness, more about privacy, they even bait you into thinking you could download files without needing an account, only to prompt so.
They used to be GOOD where you didn't have to do stupid stuff just to download a file.
It's like Dropbox pushing you twice to make an account when downloading a file, and it puts the "no thanks" link too far on the screen (Opera for Android via FireTV) where you have to first manipulate it with doubleclick zoom before bringing up the prompt, but at least you don't HAVE to create an account.
In some cases,a 4shared download can be directly accessible without making an account, but I can't remember how the link text looked.
In the near future,I reccommend 2shared,as I always have a great experience with that site.

Actually 4shared added the account login feature to make their site more secure. Also its just an ad that pops up and 99.9% of sites do similar stuff, cause its how they make money from advertisers. They also added the social network connection feature cause it is way more convenient to most people, and they added it because people asked them to add the feature so that they could connect through Facebook etc. There is very few sites or games that do not have the same exact feature that 4shared has, they are even a lot of sites, apps and games that require you to connect using GMail, Facebook or twitter. You would be hardpressed to find a website, app or game that does not require you to either give your email, Facebook, Twitter etc. Also, there is not one major file sharing site that does not either have a popup or a redirect page. The difference is that most of them have a popup which does not get in the way, while 4shared has a redirect instead of the popup. The popup and redirect do the same exact thing, it shows an ad to usually download something, which is not a big deal at all, cause all you have to do is go back one page and continue downloading what you were there to download before the redirect ad popped up. I get redirect ads all the time even on this very site. If popup and redirect ads kept people from using sites then people would basically have to stop using almost every website on the internet. If giving your email or connecting through Facebook is bad then why use XDA, cause they require you to give an email address or connect through Facebook, Twitter etc.

Because I am actually involved in using XDA for replying, making posts, and other useful things, while 4shared is merely a file sharing site,XDA is a community driven forum of developers, testers, and users alike for Android devices of all kinds.
(though I find XDA's current interface frustrating compared to the old design)
It took me a bit just to find the quote button on your post.

4shared is not just a file sharing site. Its also a place to store media or whatever else you want to store. 4shared does not require any information that any other site doesn't ask for, So I am not sure how you can say they invade your privacy. Every site you use will require you to login to use the functions of that site. 4shared is also used on devices of all kinds, not just android. There is a 4shared app for several different OS platforms. 4shared is a legit site and is not sketchy like most other file storage sites that are basicaly just a place to downlad free movies. 4shared is not rapidshare or one of the other shady sites, and thats why they require you to login. If you notice all the highly illegal sites do not require you to login to upload or download, but 4shared does, cause they are not like those sites. 4shared is more geared towards storage than sharing.
4shared 4shared Just pointing that out... XD
I was just saying it is not a forum,so it shouldn't make an extra 100,000+ people become members just because they needed to download something from it.
Of course you should have to be logged in to upload files, but not for simply downloading them.
Sure, they can make a feature to require one to be logged in to download certain files the uploader marks for requiring it though.

The thing you are not realizing is that 4shared does not force anyone to do anything, cause the internet does not revolve around 4shared. There are hundreds of other ways to get the same files that are on 4shared. You do not have to use 4shared. Every single file that I have linked to 4shared is widely availale in thousands of other places. A search engine is a beautiful thing and if you do not wanna downlad files from 4shared just use google, bing, yahoo or the search provider of you choice to find it elsewhere. Also comparing a forum and a file storage site is apples to oranges. There are also a lot of people that use storage sites a lot more than they use forum sites. You are making a big deal out of nothing. Every legit site makes you login to use their services.
That escalated quickly...
Download from 4shared or find your own files. Pretty simple and straightforward. Don't think we need ten posts about what one likes over another.
With 5 out now we should be able to install the Android TV Launcher, and with it, the Android TV Play store. I tried to sideload the APK from GAPPS but it failed. Perhaps it has other dependencies. Anyone have any suggestions?

[Apk Request Granted] App Store(FireOS Version) for AFTV 2nd Gen

Though it never seems to get mentioned, the fire TV uses the Amazon App Store for an app drawer as well as in-app purchases. I was prompted to update mine so I searched for, found, and installed one only to find that the version I installed was for non-fire device tablets only. Now I have to launch all my apps through the settings menu. How can I extract the fire version's APK, and where from?
:The answer to this disaster was for me to open ES File Explorer and from the home screen to go in to apps from the "App" icon. At this point you want to navigate to the App Store icon that represents the user version that was installed on top of the System version. Here it will give you the option of uninstalling, which actually only uninstalls the user update, the pop-up will confirm the detail of this action. This is the easiest way to revert. For me it was the only way since the 3nd user apk I installed over the first 2 prevented me from installing any other version or even going back to the other versions I previously installed all because there has been no access to the Fire OS version of the App Store on any site or archive.
Until now...
Presenting the Amazon FireOS Apk Below
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BxBTuEYnt3qeOURfbWdpYVBqLTQ
I spent over 30hrs scavenging the internet through forums, archives, I even called Amazon. They were clueless. This is the only link to it that can be found. I requested on several threads and sent private messages to many of you, where only 1 would even consider to give so much as an "I have no idea what you're talking about" response. Therefore much credit goes to sconnyuk, who was that only person, but that was not his response. He was trying to retrieve it but my new fire device came in the mail before he got a chance to finish. I used my file browser to go into system/priv-app/com.amazon.venezia/ and the copy that original apk, paste it to the download folder and use the application Apps2Fire to send it from one fire device to the other. The problem then was, from the beginning, me being prompted from within an app store game(crossy road by name) that my version of the app store was not the latest, and was out of date. I tried to use the link the game provided but the device refuses to open external links. So I googled it , found the OEM website and downloaded and installed the non-fire version of the app store, and there is no button in the app manager that lets you uninstall updates to system apps like there is on Android phones and tablets. So me, picking and poking, finding other App store versions and trying them out, went from not able to play certain games but now can't even try any other version, the installer would fail faithfully.
I was no longer able to open apps from the launcher, I had to go the app manager every time. My Games refused to open, giving me the "internal error" message. Longpressing the home button and selecting apps was useless. The apps category and the "your apps & games" category from the launcher was pitch black and unacceptable, I mean unaccessible. My kids dropped out of school and started a rap group, my best friend became the first man drafted to the WNBA.. my life was bottomless pit of despair. Now, howevr, my system is back to normal, I got an extra fire device, my kids still rapping but they back in school, and my best friend is still in the WNBA but he's just the mascot now. My life is... weird!

Google Family link set-up?

I installed Google play on my daughter's kf and now I'm trying to set up my Google family link. The problem is that I can't figure out how to add her Google account to the kid, since she is under 13. Her child account is limited to what apps she can use, and all the apps I can think of where I might be able to add her (like Gmail), she doesn't have the permission to add herself.
Is there any way to add a Google child (under 13) user account?

Just some school & game apps, youtube, etc. I want it mainly so I can better control what they see on youtube...
you have to create the account from the parent's Family Link app on your phone.
Were you able to figure this out? I'm having the same problems. At first it wouldn't install on the Kindle Fire because it was connecting to her father's g-mail account so I reset to factory settings. Now it's saying I can't install using her gmail address and password.
We're you able to figure this out? I am stuck because I believe it needs the Google settings app rather than the fire version. I am getting the error "this profile manager is required for kids under 13". Rather annoyed by every aspect of the fire tablet and this seems to be the final straw.
Curious to know
I ma curious to know if you ever figured this out? I just jumped down the rabbit hole of the Google Family Link account for my twins but can't seem to figure out how to use it with the Kindles.... Any help you can provide would be so appreciated.

I'm working on this one as well. Keep getting stuck in a loop, I try to log in my sons account, it wants to install Family Link Manager, installed Family Link apk, it leads into the same thing, saying it needs to install itself..I'm just looking to do a custom rom at this point I guess. Should probably just let him use the Freeplay thing from Amazon but paying for the whole damn Google Play Premium One whatever family plan...
I have been playing with this and got a little farther. I have an old SGS5 and got my kid set up there. Then I extracted the Family Link Manager APK (different than the Family Link APK).
Then:
Installed the four APKs needed to install Google Play Store: https://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/general/how-to-install-google-play-store-fire-t3486603
Installed the Family Link Manager APK. I posted it here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1eVmTXa1KqvZ_MV9tmYaZYYsd-2E1351C
Launched Google Play Store
Signed in as my child
It asks which parent is setting up the device. I choose myself.
Got a warning about Android 5 and not be able to control an apps permissions after approving.
Then, a message that Family Link Manager needs to be installed. I already installed it at this point.
Checking Info...
It asks for a name for the Device
Asks which installed apps should be blocked
Then I get a screen that says, "Next, you'll activate Family Link Manager, which helps parents..."
After clicking next, I get a screen that says, "This profile manager is required for Google Accounts managed with Family Link." The only option is to click, "GOT IT." I then end up on the previous, "Next, you'll activate..." screen. If I click NEXT there, I see the same, "This profile manager is required..." screen. The process is now stuck in this loop. Does anyone have any idea what may be preventing the process from accessing the profile manager? Is it talking about the default Android profile manager? Has Amazon replaced that with their own?
One other thing: I cannot install the Family Link APK. It looks like it is going to, but then says "App not installed". Does anyone know if this is my whole problem? I have four kids, each with a Fire tablet. I am going to try this process on another one and see if I get closer.
Found a workaround for anyone interested. Create a new gmail account with a date of birth older than 13 (if in the UK, may need to be older for other countries). Invite this new account to join your 'family'. Install Google Play on the Kindle Fire (which can be done without root), install Google Play Music, add the new account to the Music app and job done! [EDIT just noticed the post above has links for installing the Play services]
Only downside I've found is that if more than 1 child then they are 'sharing' the account and any playlists they create are also shared.
This is what I've done for now as well, just was hoping to take advantage of the schmancy new parental controls and such via the family link thing. Hope it works for Chromebooks now that they are the new Android tablets

I am going to try this process on another one and see if I get closer.

i found a few useful nuggets with `adb logcat` . Unfortunately, they exited my scroll back buffer before i could write them down.
the initial loop (downloading the app)
it doesn't have permission to write to storage; looks like its downloading and discarding
... it should be like "[email protected]%# where'd my download go?"
thanks for the apk - sideloading gets us moving on
the next loop (activate manager) ... more permission issues
this time like "denied granting because this is not a system app".
i thought its trying to become a device admin -- so i manually enabled it in the settings > device admin ... no change
would someone (smarter than i) please point out which permissions & how to grant them, or tell me if i'm way off base ? alternately, with root - we can make this a system app, so it is not blocked from what it needs ?
FWIW: i also managed to use my sons account for ~7min ... opened the store - accepted T&Cs -- updated installed apps, grabbed a few from the family library & request a few new apps ... then i got a notification (on parent and child devices) "the account was removed because setup was incomplete"
I have been trying to get this working as well. From the looks of it, it is down to a missing settings page. I guess we could sideload the settings.apk from a AOSP device and see if that gives us access to the required pages to enable access for the app? Would that work?

I tried installing a settings.apk from apk-mirror but the name conflict with the one already installed
Stuck at the same place
Hi, did you managed to figure this out because I'm stuck at the same place as you!

So I went through the process of installing on a android VM, and it looks like this might be down to profiles. It looks like there are multiple profiles on the device after setup.
It seems to work until some timeout triggers and the account gets removed, but I'm able to install apps and have the approval come through to my device.
I haven't been able to break out of the loop. If I manually installed Family Link then it would prompt for which account to add. Selecting the child's account would stay in the loop. Adding my own would break out of it and I'd be able to access to Play Store but only as myself. The top left selector allowed my to choose the child account but would just put me back into the loop. Eventually I cleared away the Family Link stuff in the hope that a fresh attempt would work but once I was the sole account in the Play Store, I found it impossible to break out of that situation, even after deleting data from the various Google apps. I reckon removing either the Android user or the Google account record from the "Users & accounts" section in Settings would allow me to proceed but bloody FireOS hides this in favour of their own hobbled multi-user stuff.
I have made a discovery though. I found that the Humble Bundle app is also broken and despite the problem being very different, I believe the cause is the same as you get the exact same Download Provider permissions error in logcat. This post explains that it is down to an incompatible difference in FireOS compared to stock. I tried to replace DownloadProvider and DownloadProviderUi with APKs from LineageOS 12.1 but got INSTALL_FAILED_UPDATE_INCOMPATIBLE. I then "uninstalled" the existing apps using the same trick that the debloater does but then I got into a real mess as the earlier error remained and I wasn't able to restore the old apps either, even with the APKs, as they have separate ODEX files. The app isn't even really uninstalled as it is a system app and I do not have root but it seems sufficiently broken that I will have to wipe and start again. I still wonder if this is the right direction for solving this problem though. Any bright ideas?
