Is my M9 locked or unlocked? - One (M9) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
Kinda noobish and would appreciate some help!
Just bought my "unlocked" M9, as in not locked to any carrier, but is that what you guys are referring to when you're talking about locked/unlocked?
Because ...when I boot in fastboot I come to download mode and it shows the following ontop of the screen:
*** LOCKED ***
htc_himauhl PVT S-ON

Latest firmware I can update to is 1.32.401.15 ...but latest available should be one ending in .33 right?
So I assume that when you guys talking about an unlocked phone it is not what the stores mean when they say it is not locked to a certain carrier, and if it is...why does mine says locked, and is this then why I can't get the latest updates?
Thanks in advance.

Unlocked in the sense that is being referred is yes carrier, meaning any sim can be used.
Then there is unlocked bootloader which unless you have a developer edition, it will come locked down.
But this can be unlocked easily through HTC dev if you so wish to then follow up with Custom recovery and root & ROMs.
Hope this clarifies

Yes it did! Thank you!
What about I have the 1.32.401.15 firmware installed but it says there is no more available updates? ...I was under the impression there was a recent one ending with 33, is this due to it having a looked bootloader? Are updates rolling out slower to those?

Bro, your REGION is 401 and the latest soft for your region is .15.. OK?

You need the flash the stock recovery, relock the bootloader and then run the RUU. That will return you to stock firmware.

hboot 0.94 comes with 1.28, this means you won't be able to run a 1.26 RUU - you can only run 1.28 RUUs or newer. If you can't get the 1.28 RUU for your CID you won't be able to run a RUU. You can still flash custom ROMs though, so if your phone is bootlooping that's your way out.

Are you on vodafone UK? The 1.28 RUU is available for that carrier.
Even after relocking the bootloader and running a RUU, it's impossible (without S-OFF) to remove any trace that you unlocked it. The repair centre will still be able to tell.

Essentially no. Once you unlock it, even if you relock it it won't be exactly the same. The bootloader will remember that it was previously unlocked and repair centres will be able to see it. That said, restoring the RUU is better than nothing, but from what I've heard the repair centres like to bill you for a motherboard replacement if you unlock your device.
UK law does give you a large degree of protection if you wanted to take it to court though (assuming you're returning it due to a fault that was not caused by unlocking the device)

[Q] Can I re-lock my bootloader and S-ON without bricking?

I've converted my HTC One M8 (AT&T GSM) into a Google Play Edition device and changed the MID and CID so that they match those of a Google Play Edition HTC One M8 in order to receive OTA updates from Google. I used the method of flashing the Google Play Edition RUU file. I usually only flash custom ROMs for a purer Android experience such as Cyanogenmod; however, now that I'm running the purest version of any other version of Android, I would like to re-lock my bootloader and set my security back to S-ON because an unlocked bootloader and S-OFF opens up several security holes within the device which I take very seriously. My question is: can I re-lock my bootloader and turn S-ON without bricking my phone and still continue to receive OTA updates through Google?

Software Status: Modied?

I just got my M8 Developer Edition a couple of months ago. CID is BS_US002. MID: 0P6B12000. The only thing I did to the phone was to root it, nothing else. I didn't S-OFF or anything. The only thing before updating to Lollipop, SuperSU binary update failed, I didn't root again as Lollipop was around the corner and was going to do it anyway. While rooting Lollipop, I found at HBoot that Software status: Modified. What could be the reason for that? How can I fix that? I unrooted, did a factory reset and nothing changes.
Here are the full details on HBoot
Software status: Modified
UNLOCKED
M8_UL_CA PVT SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-3.19.0.0000
RADIO-1.24.21331147A1.096
OPENDSP-V48.2.2-00564-M8974_FO.1211
OS-4.16.1540.8
eMMC-boot 2048 MB
Any idea how to fix that?
Thanks in advance!
It means changes have been made at some point to the system, e.g. it's been unlocked (as yours says)

It's not simply being unlocked as the device ships direct from HTC with the bootloader unlocked. That being said I have no idea what makes it switch to "Modified" status. Mine is S-OFF with custom rooted ROM (though it is sense-based and pretty close to stock) and custom recovery and it still displays as "Official".

I thought they came locked and you can just use the fastboot command like the GPe? Obviously not! In which case, something else has been changed for it to say that

If you're not bothered about setting up the phone again you could reflash the new RUU and it should correct anything that was changed

Indeed but I don't think that was the issue at hand. He wanted to change the "Modified" status on his phone.
EddyOS suggested that he uses an RUU to turn everything back to normal, hence why he asked for the RUU.

I won't know.... What CID do you have? Mr Hofs asked this previously and I'm yet to see anything from your side. If you're on International WWE then the update is not yet out for your device. If you have Asian WWE then the update *might* be out for your device, either way we won't know. Share some info on what device you have.
In the first post you mentioned you received the OTA for your device... If you don't get it now then try to do a factory reset and see if you can get it afterwards. Though it would still help a lot to know what device you have. So get adb on your PC and in bootloader mode use the command: fastboot getvar all and share the info, just delete the IMEI and Serial number.

Sprint device? Didn't think you'd have a Sprint one, thought you were from the Ukraine going by your flag choice etc.
Either way, 4.4.4 is the latest for Sprint devices, the Lollipop update is still in 2(Integration) stage so it has some ways to go still before lollipop.

Well it looks like you've been getting OTA updates so far, so you should be able to get it when Lollipop is released, whenever that is.
Sprint - CDMA device (Verizon as well).
Other M8s - GSM Devices.
You can look up the main differences between the two with a quick google search.
It's American device yes. It would perhaps have been better if they had the Developer Edition or Unlocked Edition from the US instead of a carrier specific(Sprint) device which runs on different technologies(Radios) for their networks. Generally you won't be able to us a CDMA device "just anywhere" where as GSM is Global. Like I said though, you can get the whole explanation with a simple Google search though.
yes i have been getting OTA update. Patience or custom rom .

Marshmallow Update

whats up guys?
Im a little confused on this update process. i have an ATT M9 that i converted to dev edition. with the new marshmallow update rolling out, its only going to the unlocked version. when i check the HTC website, it says that the dev edition is only in stage 1 while the unlocked and ATT versions are in stage 3. what should i do to get the update asap? keep the dev edition, or convert to unlocked/ATT version? How would i convert to the unlocked edition without an official RUU from HTC?
you already have the answer, anyways ill paste it here for anybody else..:
1.unlock bootloader from htc.dev
2.root twrp 2.8.7.1-beta / SuperSU 2.52
3.S-Off sunshine $25 USD
4.Change CID to Super CID 11111111 MID to 0PJA10000 (international=unlocked).
5.Flash latest ZIP Ruu through SD Card Method
6.This will give you stock WWE UNLOCKED, do not flash any custom recovery or anything else, twrp will be ereased, no more root, stay stock!
7.OTA until you get 2.10 firmware (STOCK).
8.Be Ready for MM! OTA =D
Unlocked generally is WWE Edition, unlocked phones from USA are rarely seen, but you can tottally be sure this is the option, there are only 2 (unlocked) FIRMWARES Dev (current 2.11) and WWE (2.10).

rite, but the update says USA only as of now which means the WWE edition wont be receiving it first. no?
i got a fail to update due to custom software detected on device, relocked bootloader to see if that fixes anything......
I just updated my HTC One M9 unlocked edition and it's a shame there's no System UI Tuner available (kind of expected this though). The quick settings is still same looking; I wished it looked more like stock LOL. Other than that, I'm happy about the permissions; no more location services for a ton of apps . It seems to be much smoother, especially when you flick the apps away from the recent apps drawer.

Any chance of a Twrp backup for those of us wanting to port it?

Hi, and sorry for the inconvenience but my phone is not rooted or anything, I have just kept it stock. No mods, no custom recovery, nothing unfortunately. I would have definitely provided the XDA community with one if it was rooted/had a custom recovery. Sorry man!
