I have never flashed a custom ROM before but as long as you unlock your bootloader through HTC Dev, you should be good to go

Oh wow I wasn't aware of that. I bought the dev edition straight from HTC instead of going through AT&T so that I could avoid all of the carrier bloatware., but I didn't realize that they also lock down the bootloader. Verizon and AT&T are really POS carriers. They either lock you into a 2 year contract for a subsidized phone or make you pay full price for the phone over 12-18 months and then lock down the bootloader so you can't actually own your device. My advice, unless you have Verizon (HTC doesn't sell a CDMA unlocked phone), buy directly from HTC and you can do the bill me later option with Paypal and then just pay for it over a year. We need to stop giving carriers our money until they actually change their ridiculous practices.

AT&T phones are easy to unlock the bootloader (choose Other @ htcdev.com) / Only Verizon blocks unlocking

what's the difference in paying the carrier for the device over a period of time or giving it all to htc at once? You don't actually think the carriers are going to give you a discount do you?
I will give you that the locked bootloader is annoying I don't believe we're providing enough $$ to verizon to make a difference.

That's the whole point, if you do the ATT Next plan or the equivalent plan for Verizon, you will pay the full price of the phone over 12-18 months (depending on which plan you choose), but they give you a phone with a locked bootloader and a SIM lock. If you go through HTC though, you will pay full price (obviously), but you can opt to do bill me later with PayPal and pay it off over a year with no interest. By going through HTC though, you can get a SIM unlocked phone and if you go with the dev edition, the bootloader comes unlocked (no need to go through HTC Dev). Unfortunately for Verizon users, if you want a CDMA phone that has an unlocked bootloader, then you'd need to buy an unlocked (SIM) HTC One M9 from Sprint and then unlock the bootloader via HTC Dev since HTC doesn't sell CDMA phones themselves. To be honest, I'm never going to buy a carrier branded phone again. They come with too much bloatware, they're sim locked, and you have to wait for the carrier to push software updates. In summary, it's ridiculous that carriers allow you to buy a phone, but not really own it.

I bought mine off the HTC website for Verizon and the bl can't be unlocked as far as I know. Lol unless I totally read your post wrong. I do apologize if I did

This looks like an old thread but just to clarify there are exploits we can use a Java Card to unlock just find someone nearest you in the Verizon HTC One M9 Java Card thread. We have s-off and root. (just in case someone new see's this thread)

I am on AT&T. Should I order an Unlocked T-Mobile, as I hear they do not have locked bootloader?? Or just stick with AT&T version. I know AT&T record with Updates is also Terrible and Slow.

They vowed a year ago that all their upcoming phones would have locked bootlaoders. They said something like, "we will not support unlocked bootloaders." And I don't get that because their version of the M8 can have its bootloader unlocked.

I think it's because HTC themselves released a method of unlocking the M8's bootloader. I doubt Samsung will ever do something like that.
As title says, is there a difference? Reason for asking is that in order to keep the unlimited data plan I would have to go the retailer route. Question is, does this matter whether the phone comes from HTC store or from Verizon retailer ($50 cheaper)? What else I need to pay attention to so not to be tricked by Verizon getting off unlimited plan? I did my homework as best as I could but just could not find a reasonable answer.

Silly me. "unlocking SIM" vs "unlocked bootloader"... the word "unlock" got used interchangeably but I get it now. lol Blame this on my deteriorating brain cells.
I just switched from Rezound to M9. I bought M9 from Verizon retailed so I can keep my unlimited data plan. And now waiting for s-off. Just curious if there's an easier and cheaper way to achieve all that. I am not a heavy data user but was comparing the prices of data plans the other day and I was in awe.

According to THIS post by dottat, it's SIM unlocked.
As you realized, Bootloader unlocked is a thing of the past. With the M7, you could HTCDev.com unlock your phone for a few hours, even VZW variants. After that, it looks like they smartened up and send all the Serial #'s to HTC to block before they were shipped/sold to the public. S-Off exists for the M9, but the VZW cannot be (temp) rooted so Sunshine won't work until that happens.
If you own the phone and there's no balance why can't Verizon unlock it so that I can unlock the bootloader? I have a Tmobile Oneplus 6t as well and I purchased it outright and the TMobile Rep unlocked it for me. Has anyone ever called Verizon to unlock the Pixel?
I've used my pixel on T-Mobile without any issues.

That is true I am also using the Verizon variante on TMobile but what I'm saying is my TMobile OnePlus 6t came with a greyed out OEM Unlock option. So I called TMobile and told them I want the phone unlocked and they did it. I just had to factory reset the phone and the option was no longer greyed out. So I'm wondering why can't Verizon do the same for the Pixel? I mean I do own the phone out right no finance.
Verizon will not allow the bootloader unlock and I highly doubt any devs are looking into it either.

That's stupid specially if I own the phone, it's like they still have control over it even though I own it. I guess that's what I get for being impatient and rushing to get the Pixel instead ordering it from Google and waiting on the shipping
I'm in the same boat but to be honest the whole point of a pixel in my opinion is to get a pure Google experience.. I don't have a valid reason to root to be honest. Also my work apps won't work on a rooted phone so might as well be bootloader locked
As I'm in Ireland and bought the 3xl while on a work trip on launch day I'm tempted to see if Verizon might unlock it for me.. really it's not making much difference to me

So please elaborate. You bought the phone from Verizon to use on another network? How and why would you do that? If I wasn't on VZW I'd never get the phone from them... oh wait, did you buy it from BB, i.e. the VZW version on discount? If so you probably need to return it if it's still possible. If not then you are locked forever. Only way is to sell it and buy another. Yes, you own the phone but they own the discount you got from BB and basically you're screwed. Damn that sucks man.

When I say I bought it outright I mean no discount, I paid just over $1000 for the pixel 3xl from best buy but it's all good I'll sell it and buy another one from google
Mine unlocked within 10 hours after purchase. I've read that all their phones were locked to Verizon before they're sold to prevent theft.

VZW will not and has never unlocked a BL on any phone that had a locked BL. They say it protects their nerwork... More like they hate people hacking their apps and loosing money.
Last unlocked BL they sold was Nexus 6... Correct me, cuz I did zero research on this... Just my cloudy damaged memory

As for the bootloader, no they will not. I just moved to Pixel 3 XL after getting an OG Verizon PIxel XL right after launch (actually immediately after the dePixel exploit was published or I would have purchased direct from Google or chose another phone). This same discussion along with the same "it's not fair since I own the device" arguments has been going on for years. Look at Huawei for evidence that bootloader locking is becoming more restrictive and not less. You can only purchase the device outright, and even they have discontinued the bootloader code request system. Eventually an exploit might come around, but maybe it won't. jcase pretty much said the original dePixel find was an accident, and it took another year and a half or so to find another for a phone that was already being replaced. Either take a risk that one will be found knowing that it might never come, or bite the bullet and buy a Google version or a 6T (where even if you get it at full price from T-Mobile you might have to wait to get BL and carrier unlock).

Does it protect their network if I never accept any OTA updates because such updates could fix any exploits that eventually will be used to allow me to root the phone that I bought and own?
I mean, I'm just wondering what they would say/do if a lot of people start telling them point blank that they are going to boycott all security and other updates until they allow BL unlocking.

Easy answer. They don't care about consumer opinion until results are felt. They are concerned with brand, lawsuits , and corporate spending. Look at it this way, this thread was last posted on (by me) over a year ago, and there hasn't even been a sniff of an exploit or getting Big Red to change even once.
Once, a long time ago, Verizon carried bootloader unlockable phones. My Nexus 6 was from Verizon and it was fantastic. Google made a marketing decision for Verizon to push the Pixel OG exclusively, Verizon forced them to make a varient that could be locked down and full of Verizon crapware, just like every phone on their network. OG, 2, 3 and now 4, sold by Verizon will never get natively unlocked. The only hope would be a temp root solution and being able to toggle the unlock in developers options.
6 years ago unlocked "dev" phones weren't readily available, but Google sells an unlockable version now, with financing if you want, most people that want root just buy that.

Yea sell that for sure. I bought a new unlocked P3XL for 400.00 on Amazon last month.
So much I want to root my Pixel 3a but OEM unlocking is greyed out because it is carrier locked. I owe $250 to Sprint to pay it off. Would they allow it to be unlocked once it's payed? Or will I need to make up some excuse why I need it unlocked besides saying I want to root it?
Any help is appreciated, thanks

My friend, it's killing me too, thinking of starting a bounty to get a work around...I just got my phone and from what I gather, once it's paid off, they will carrier unlock it and that should allow the bootloader to be unlocked as well
Would anyone be willing to throw in on a bounty to get someone to unlock it?

I highly doubt sim unlocking a phone would allow the bootloader to be unlocked. For example the Verizon Pixel 2 XL is sim unlocked out of the box, but the bootloader to this day is locked.

You can always ask to have it sim unlocked before it is payed off. The longer you have had their service, the more likely they may be to unlock it. Once it is payed off, they should unlock it for you.
Once it is sim card unlocked, the bootloader unlock button will start working.

That because you have a Verizon phone. It's the only US carrier that bootlocks the Pixel phones.
You live in the Cleveland area(from your profile), so can you tell them you need a sim unlock because you got a job across the lake in Canada and want to use a Canadian carrier to cut down on costs - or even say your new(fake) employer has a work sim for you to use? It's a practical and believable excuse as people do commute across the border regularly for work.
& if the sim unlock gets you the OEM unlock option - BOOM: you're all set.
*It's just a little white lie to a giant corporation that lies to consumers all the time(sprint has the best service? my a**). You've got nothing to lose, so why not try?

I called and said I will be visiting Canada soon. Sprint said I will have no problems using my phone out there, lol. I will have roaming charges is all. Then he tried upgrading my plan, lol.
I'll say I'm going to Australia for a while. If that don't work I will straight up ask what's a guy gotta do to get that bootloader unlocked:laugh:. I'm worried that paying it off still won't unlock it

And I'm curious about the unlock after you pay it off too, but I have heard in the past on some devices Sprint does give you OEM unlock once it's fully paid for. Verizon is the main carrier where you are stuck no matter what...paid off or not.

I called and straight asked what I need to do to enable OEM unlocking. She said all I need to do is pay it off and it will be no problem no matter the reason I want it unlocked. Sadly I have to wait at least 2 weeks before I can do that

It's been 2 weeks... any status update? I can't seem to find anyone who has actually gotten the sim unlock and the bootloader unlocked with it, all people saying that is how it is, but nobody saying they did it.

Not sure what you mean. As long as we aren't talking about Verizon, there are plenty of people that have gotten their phones unlocked from the carriers and then had the bootloader unlock work. Google has simply tied the bootloader unlock to the SIM lock which makes sense because if you could bootloader unlock the phone, I'm sure there would be a way to SIM unlock it. There isn't anything special that Sprint needs to do other than SIM unlock the phone - the phone will automatically allow bootloader unlocking once the phone is SIM unlocked.
The Verizon models should be considered bootloader locked forever. There were some reports that people have been able to bootloader unlock the Verizon model, but I would chalk that up to early errors on Verizon's part vs a change in their company's policy.
If you are looking for a way to get Sprint to SIM unlock the phone, then that is another issue. Obviously the company policy is to only unlock phones that have been paid off unless there are special circumstance (ie you are traveling out of the country). I will say that calling the customer service line is the hardest method of getting a phone unlocked. The most success comes from people DM the carrier using Twitter. That must go into a different group and they seem to be much more likely to unlock a phone than the normal call center. But you are always at the mercy of the person handling the request because it is generally an exception to the rule.

I will say that calling the customer service line is the hardest method of getting a phone unlocked. The most success comes from people DM the carrier using Twitter. That must go into a different group and they seem to be much more likely to unlock a phone than the normal call center. But you are always at the mercy of the person handling the request because it is generally an exception to the rule.

Wow, this is fantastic, and exactly what I was looking for. I've been hesitant to pull the trigger on buying a 'sprint locked' Pixel 3 XL because I haven't seen anybody who has actually said "Yes, I've done this." Only folks who said stuff like you, but I think I'm gonna go for it. I'm very confident of getting sprint to SIM unlock it.

Couldn't you just buy a sim unlock code from a service other than your carrier, unlock it and problem solved??
The title about says it all. I'm on an AT&T business plan via work and we get our choice of upgrades every 18 months or so. I'm trying to plan my next upgrade. Just curious if there is anything at all that is either a developer edition or something with an unlockable bootloader. Sure I know the answer already but figured I'd check anyway! Even if it is hackable to get unlock I'd love to know. Thanks!

Most carriers sell phones with bootloaders that cannot be unlocked. Sometimes though there are hacks/exploits to get access and unlock a bootloader that cannot be unlocked. Usually if one wants a bootloader unlockable phone they have to buy directly from Google (or Best Buy or Amazon or other retailer that sells fully unlocked devices). An unlockable bootloader allows you to customize software on your device and make it run or do the things you want. Carriers don't like that ... quite frankly IMHO it's 100% about monetization of you, the product. If you are interested, stay FAR away from Samsung stuff. None of it is unlockable here in the states without an exploit (correct me if I'm wrong).

Did I understand correctly from the first post that you work for AT&T and would like to break the locks on phones ordered from manufacturers for the employer/client?

See if they have a Pixel or Xaomi and you have a prayer. Other options would be talking a majority of CO workers into T Mobile stage a rebellion over phones they give you cuz they spy on you. Let freedom reign!
