[Q] bootloader related. - ZenFone 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Holla! i'm thinking about getting the Zenfone 4GB ram variant .
but there is one thing that concern me and this is Custom ROMS
is the bootloader unlockable?
will it be possible to get CyanogenMod up and running on the device?

Not yet.

My 551ML does not show a locked bootloader, so I am able to flash a pre-rooted system.img file via fastboot. My guess is that CM and AOSP compiling will occur soonly.

To test whether the bootloader is locked or not, it would be a better idea to flash a custom kernel built from sources and see if it boots. According to the Asus forum (read here) the bootloader is locked and for now there is no plan to provide a way to unlock it.

I never understand WHY vendors like Asus, Motorola or Meizu makes ultra powerfull phones ... what we BUY for MONEY, and lock them for never let you install what you want...
I really want this phone ... but never will buy it if I can't install an AOSP custom made ROM ... (no CM, i hate it)
that why I always buyed unlocked phones like Nexus phones or my actual OnePlus One...
i hope the Lenovo K80, who will be released 30 april will be unlocked !
or the Elephone p7000 (for this, you can already find CM, AOSP, Flyme etc... roms on the OFFICIAL website !!!! )

I agree. I want to buy this phone, but I'm not going to until Asus allows to unlock the bootloader.

and NOW i'm REALLY interrested oO
on FlipKart you can now reserve a 128Gb version !!
NEED IT, but just if the bootloader and custom roms come ....
if not, I will buy the Oppo R7 or Elephone P7000...
seriously, what it cost to Asus to unlock the bootloader ? and let owners use our phone that they buyed ....

but..
In the warrenty document over on Asus Zenfone section the following details are interesting
Unusability or damage to the Product caused by installing and using the Unlock Device App, which is a utility that will unlock your Product's boot loader but will render the warranty null and void.
The pdf file can be reviewed from the Asus website
Does this help?

Odds are they were lazy and copied the warranty document over from the one for the previous Zenfone devices, which had bootloader unlock methods released by Asus. Hope they do the same with the Zenfone 2.

hmm...
But has anyone tried to unlock it by this method!

If bootloader is unlocked by default, people who are not suitable for that will brick the phone in a higher chance, with more issue varieties which increase the cost of after sale services like maintenance. Unless there is no warranty or support for the phone after sale, vendor will not unlock the bootloader.

I am under the impression the ZE550ML zenfone 2, I have, i that the boot loader is locked.
As it is proving impossible to root it using the pre root images available.
I have 2 sets of instructions that I have followed to the exact method, yet the phone will not root !!
1) ADB sideload method, in recovery mode, choose the ADB option. Zip file is in the folder with the ADB + fastboot files.......................................message in command is "unreadable zip or not recognised'......
Checked ADB device and ADB recognises zenfone attached to computer!
2) turn phone on and have debugging set.......................(no recovery mode) place system.img into fastboot folder...........open command via the shift + right click option............submit the line 'fastboot flash system system.img.........................continuously waiting for device......nothing else
Ive never known a more difficult phone to root, especially with all the easy straight forward instructions out there to follow.
So I'm of the impression the bootloader or something is stopping root
Anyone else had the same issue?

Asus Zenfone 5 (A500CG, A501CG) No Fix to Camera Problem after unlocking bootloader

NO Fix to Camera Problem after unlocking Boot-loader on Asus Zenfone 5 (A500CG, A501CG)
The purpose of this thread to inform to owners of slightly different Zenfone 5 devices like me (which is does not support unlocked boot-loader) thus making no camera bug after unlocking boot loader
So, guys its i feel sad but after 2 years there is no solution to get rid of this no camera bug specifically in case of Zenfone 5
if u don't know what i am talking about,
1. This bug appears in certain Zenfone 5 devices of any SKU or any Firmware.
2. The bug cause camera to stop working in device at all on any rom (including both stock and custom) when boot loader is unlocked by any method on any firmware (by any means all available methods and all so called solutions does not work at all on certain devices.)
3. You need to lock boot-loader to get camera working but u can temporary unlock boot-loader to get root access and to install xposed then u need to re-lock boot-loader to get working camera . dont worry root and xposed is usable after re-locking boot-loader if ur using stock rom of any version.
now who i am ,
i am not developer but i tested basically tried all solutions to this problem and all firmware versions which are supposed to work on my devices but guess what no success at all, i am testing every method from xda and even from other website like zentalk and zenfourms etc. from at least six months.
why there is no solution to this problem even after so much development and so much time.
1. Because not no developer of zenfone 5 has this kind of specific devices which has this problem.( believe me i also tried to contact developers personally to just solve this problem)
2. No developer want to solve this problem , i am not sure why but if u see development threads almost all developer will just say "sry guys cant solve this problem because, i do not have this problem at all (yes they are ignoring)"
3. But wait its not developers fault because Asus made all these devices different from others and after much research i found that problem is hardware specific (most probably in mother board)
possible solution(according to me):
If someone is able to sign 'custom recovery' or maybe 'custom kerne'l to original boot-loader means if modified files are signed with original signature used by Asus to sign their files there is possibility that original locked boot-loader is able to boot custom kernal and custom recovery or maybe custom roms.
this means there is no need to unlock boot-loader, u can boot custom rom with original means locked boot-loader.
now i dont know if this is possible but somebody(reliable resource) told me that they are able to do this on LG G3 devices where they are able to boot device into custom rom becuse they signed it before flashing.
at last i really sry for my English
and i know maybe most of things does not makes sense from your perspective, but i tried and if u have any problem or u doesn't understand please comment, or if somebdy really have any solution or new method an want to try then tell me i will test it for u on my device, an let u know if it works or not.
No one has Asus sign key, only Intel sign key, which not help in this case :/
In my case it's screen freezes after unlocking bootloader...

Proper unlock request message reason

I've read that Xiaomi my reject your request for unlock of device. I've applied for the unlock two days ago but I really don't know where to check its status? And basically there shouldn't be any specific reason why one would want to unlock bootloader unless they're trying to install third party ROM? If one writes the reason as being I would like to install Xiaomi.eu ROM on my device that Xiaomi would strait off reject it or not? Because mainly that's what I would like to do until Xiaomi releases sources (if they do) at which point many will move to other ROMs (CM etc.). So.
Questions:
What kind of good reason may someone have to unloack bootloader so that unlock will be accepted without issues?
Where can one check unlock request status?
If one unlocks bootloader and then flashes official ROM (which will likely lock it again), can one unlock it without additional unlock requests to Xiaomi?
1. I said I bought from Gearbest and had a shop rom installed and want to install original rom (which was true, but nobody can confirm this obviously)
2. I do not think you can check it
3. Flashing official ROM will not lock your bootloader again
I would suggest you wait a little more and if you still do not get a reply, open a new request or post in the forums.
btw, the request completion will be sent via an SMS message, nothing else.
1. Android Developer.
It worked like a charm, received the unlock code half an out later.

Unless you are flashing a fastboot rom with miflash and select the flash and lock radio button.
I wrote flash global rom. got the approval few hours later

I said "I want to install the xiaomi.eu rom for localization."
3 hours later they approved the request.
Thanks guys. I got permission to unlock after about 4 days. I suppose they had a bit more work after Black Friday so it took them a bit longer than usual.
But of all the reasons you're mentioned I think the best one is I'm an Android application developer. Others related to fake ROM etc. are not as viable as I'm pretty confident they know exactly which ROM you're using on which device the moment you sign in with you Mi account.
Bootloader Unlocking
If any problem, If i unlock the bootloader ???
In my redmi 4 ???
Plz tell me ...
Something Emotional and Real
I got permission in 4min by giving a emotional reason like my brother flashed wrong Nougat firmware on my Redmi Note 3 and my device got bricked I need to unlock bootloader to fix it.
And got permission.

Mi5s Plus bootloader unlock problem

Wondering if anyone is able to help me.
Recently purchased a MI5S Plus and having problems unlocking the bootloader. Followed all instructions and the unlock fails at 50% with the tool stating that "the account on the device is different than current account" (or something like that).
Now here's what I have done so far:
-made sure device and tool are using the same account with phone number login
-made sure "find device" is turned on and phone can be found
-disabled windows 10 driver signature
-enabled usb debugging on the device
-made sure sim card is in slot 1 of device
So far no dice. Phone is on Global Stable (8.0.1.0) but I wanted to move to EU version (which also has the correct UK locale and some other features). I am not new to the rom flashing scene (just moved from iOS to android and had a Galaxy S2 back in the day).
If anyone could help me with this it would be greatly appreciated. No idea what else to try.
Best regards

I think what this means is that your phone is associated to a mi account different than the one you have logged in to unlock it. Make sure your phone has the same mi account as the one you are using to unlock it.
Good luck!!

Hi, I will share some of my experience.
Myself had that problem too, bought mi5s plus on global 8.x.x and wanted to move to eu version . The problem with this phone is that there's no global dev rom for it just yet, and you can't officially flash the china dev rom, since the installer doesn't recognize the package. So you find yourself in kind of loop, like
==> to open bootloader you need dev rom (only china available) :/
==> to flash china dev rom via mi flash you need to get your phone to EDM ( Emergency Download Mode ) .
But to get to EDM you need open bootloader.
That's kinda sucks, but i kept looking over the internet and found the overall solution that will probably work on any xiaomi device. And that's to make "Deep flash cable". This cable let's you enter EDM ignoring the locked bootloader, this way you can flash the china dev rom, and from there open the bootloader.
The idea is really simple, just need to shortcut any of the middle connectors of the usb with the ground(the outter connector) when plugging the phone into the pc(don't even need to cut the original usb cable), that will prevent the phone from starting to charge and it will enter EDM (pure black screen without any sign of life, but pc will recognize it on COM port as long as you have qualcomm drivers installed.) In this mode the mi flash tool will recognize the phone and you can flash the china dev rom.
If you need more help just ask, and u can find some nice guides on youtube that explain how to make the cable. Good luck!

Thanks makslll, I have mi5s, wondering if the process is different?
I bought my phone with the xiaomi.eu rom (8.0.10.0 MAGCNDH), unlocked bootloader with "MiFlashUnlock_1.1.0317.1_en" and installed recovery following this (https://xiaomi.eu/community/threads/6-12-1.36462/). After this I was able to install other ROMs .
Hope this helps

Main problem I'm getting at the moment is the fact I can't get past the 50% on the unlock process. Keeps giving me an account error on the Mi Flash unlock tool. Something like "Account on the device is different from current account".
In any case I was looking at this EDL solution but let me see if I grasped this:
-I can use EDL to bypass locked bootloader restrictions. Could I just flash the EU rom without unlocking the bootloader?
-That not being the case, I'm guessing I would need to flash something like China Dev and the try and unlock the bootloader followed by TWRP flash, etc etc.
If someone could shed any light on this that would be great.
Thanks in advance

Thing is I read about a lot of people being successful unlocking their bootloader on Global Stable rom, so no idea why I can't do it. Pretty sure I have all the necessary drivers and I'm following the process as it should. Still getting the account error.

You can't flash Eu ROM with locked bootloader, since you need to use special image files of the supported roms for miflash (Can't use the .zip roms that we flash via recovery), and those available only for the official roms ( global stable, china stable, china dev).
So yeah, unfortunally this would take little longer, but i can assure you this method 100% works and it's not very hard once you've done the tricky thing with the deep flash cable =)

Yes, on my gf's mi5 i just flashed global dev rom from the updater and unlocked it easy, they really should just remove the global <==> china barrier
Update: there is official Global Dev ROM available now, so no "deep flash cable" is needed anymore, just download the ROM, copy it to phone memory, and flash it via updater, good luck =)
So, quick update.
Managed to unlock bootloader last night by updating to the new Global Dev for the Mi5S Plus.
However a new problem has arisen, as usual. Using ADB, it recognises the phone whilst in normal mode with USB debugging on. The moment I reboot it into fastboot mode (to flash TWRP), it doesn't recognise it anymore. The drivers are installed as I disabled windows driver signature verification, but the phone is just not recognised anymore.
Anyone have any idea how to fix this?
Thanks in advance.

Is the bootloader unlockable?

I'm really considering getting this device, my brother just got it and it seems great but, before I commit to it I want to make sure the bootloader is unlockable. Can anyone confirm that you can unlock the bootloader with the OEM unlock command?
BL is not unlockable at this time.
That's too bad hopefully that changes in the future. Either officially or unofficially.
there was a topic on nokia 6 forum for unlocking bootloader for 2nd gen but there are no codes available anymore we missed the boat

Usually oem provided unlock codes are generated on a per device basis so doing this would be pointless. Basically you send a command to the device it gives you a number and you give than to the OEM and they give you another code to use with OEM unlock and mark your warranty void. Which is honestly probably illegal now (in the us at least) based on what the FCC had been doing lately. I mean them voiding your warranty like that is illegal. That's probably one of the reasons they would stop giving it codes.

Hopefully someone can find a free way to generate the codes but if not we'll see if this method works on this device and if it leads to it getting twrp and Lineage OS or other roms.

The official answer of Nokia about bootloader
These is the official answer Nokia customer when I ask about bootloader
yes its unlockable you just have to pay $5 for the service. my question is why is there no twrp or root yet? I cant post the link to the unlock but you can do a google search.
Nokia havent relesed yet bootloader codes. If you buy one (its a tool that is like server and they have a guy in the nokia or maybe have hack nokia server and the send you your unlock.bin file) these is the commands that you need but first you must unlock the dev option and put on oem unlocking
install fastboot drivers for phone.
power off phone.
run
fastboot -i 0x2e04 flash unlock <signature file>
connect phone to cable
run
fastboot -i 0x2e04 oem unlock-go
follow instructions on phone display if any
if you are in android 7.1 and not updated ,there's a way ,through 9008 mode to unlock it.
if you already updated through ota, there's only paid way to unlock it till now.
PM me for unlock bootloader

Is Mi Unlock really needed to unlock bootloader?

I have searched for a very long time how to unlock the bootloader to this phone. What I came across was the proper way to unlock the bootloader, using Xiaomi's unlocking service. This way tends to take around a week to actually unlock your phone. I am far too impatient for this and have yet to find a better option to get my phone's bootloader unlocked. Is there any better way to do this?

No, you'll have to be patient.
For some reason, mine came unlocked. I bought it from the Xiaomi Ali express store.
I want to buy this phone but am wary because of my past experience with Huawei's locked bootloader, and their requirement to go through them to unlock; which they discontinued right after I bought the damn thing!
This required a payment (about $25 iirc) to a third party in order to get an unlock code.
Is this something I should be worried about with Xiaomi phones?

This shouldn't be a concern for now. Xiaomi isn't planning to restrict unlocking the bootloader. Another thing you should consider is that Redmi note 8 pro gets easily bricked by flashing custom twrp, magisk, etc. but it's not easily recovered as it requires xiaomi authorised account.

Thanks for that info! I'm thinking I'll go with my other phone choice, as I like to mess around with all that stuff, and custom ROMs.
Can someone explain how is it possible that after unlocking the phone and rooting,it still shows my phone is locked and secured?

You are using the stock rom, right? This is a false alarm. If you can flash modules and edit system files you are rooted for sure.

That's a serious red flag. Make sure you flash every possible firmware from the stocks here...
But if I were you, I'd return it and get it retail properly. Ali Express is notorious for vendors that put spyware and other ****e on their phones prior to shipping.
I got a proper Redmi Note 5 Plus (Vince) once, and retail was supposed to have a locked bootloader in the same fashion as this phone. On Redmi 5, however, there was an even cooler known problem where they would keep people's bootloaders locked, but flash malicious firmware using a testbed by taking the phones apart. So people would receive their Redmi 5's from Ali Express bugged and they would have to wait out those weeks to unlock it and flash clean images.
On an unrelated note, I did use an exploit on that MIUI version by creating two accounts, logging off, signing off, I don't remember. But I unlocked the bootloader the day I got my Vince. I'm not sure if this will work anymore. Not that I needed to. Again, I would never get a phone of Ali Express.

I don't know about spyware but they mainly unlock the bootloader on china variant to flash the global rom and sell it as a global variant. Later the user receives an update notification and installs the update and voala you get your device bricked.

Yes, once in a while they do it just for the sake of putting on a "better" ROM. Some of those Ali Express Note 5's reportedly came with even beta ROMs.
I'm saying just to exercise caution, is all. But a different ROM that would receive the wrong OTA sounds just as bad. I've never even thought about that scenario...

Fortunately, that has not been the case and I've been able to install several updates to the global rom since purchasing.
