[Q] How to access USB storage via WiFi on Amazon Fire TV? - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Now that Amazon Fire TV officially supports USB storage, is there a way to connect to it via WiFi from a PC?
I'd like to be able to send files to the attached USB stick. Is there a way to do this?
Thank you! :fingers-crossed:

You need to be rooted. Then you can run an Android Samba app. Expect slow transfer rates. Probably quicker to unplug the stick and plug it into your PC.

Thanks so much for your response. My firmware does not allow rooting. Is there no way to do this without the root?

Could the HooToo TripMate Nano Wireless N Pocket Travel Router set up and connect the USB storage through adhoc wireless mode to the FIre TV / Stick without root?

connect the hard drive to ur pc or android device via an otg cable and push the files using adb

If all you are looking for is to manually transfer files without root, there are several apps out there called something similar to "WiFi File Transfer" that run on Android devices and let you connect to them via an ip address in a browser on another device, I've used the free version of this one (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.smarterdroid.wififiletransfer&hl=en), which is limited to 5MB file transfers, on other Android devices, it was very simple. I haven't tried this on my Stick, though it might be easy if you install Google Play first.
If you are looking for SMB network sharing, then I agree with everyone else, you need root or you need to connect the hardrive to something else like a computer or your router.

I havent tried this without root but you could run a ftp server app on the firetv and connect to it that way.
I tried googling it but got conflicting answers if it will work without root.

To my knowledge, ADB is disabled in stock recovery. And furthermore, USB peripheral mode is disabled in the kernel. Therefore I know of know way to do anything useful with stock recovery.

If your PC has two network connections (e.g., wifi and ethernet), you can connect to the internet via VPN with one connection interface, and set the other to share your PC's connection and connect the Fire TV. For example, setup a VPN connection via Wifi on your PC, then connect the Fire TV to your PC via ethernet, and set your PC to share your wifi connection over its ethernet port.

Accessing USB drive connected to FireTv from Windows

[non rooted FireTv]
So I finally connected a USB drive to my firetv and I can access it through Kodi.
How can I access the same USB drive from my Windows machine so I can copy files into it? I can ADB to it, but that's not really convenient...
Thanks!
A.

Load a samba server on AFTV and that will do it. ANDsmb is an example of one samba server
What about a FTP server? That should work.
I've tried this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=lutey.FTPServer&hl=en
It only work over wireless AFAIK.

Pushing Roms to Amazon Fire Stick. I've tried everything!

Hi there. I was able to get an emulator running on my firestick, but I cannot get my NES roms to the stick for the life of me.
I tried:
Using AGK fire to push roms directly from my android, but the folder on the fire stick shows as empty
installing JDE/JDK, and Android Developer on my PC, but I still can't see the stick as a drive when I plug in directly via USB to push the roms
What am I doing wrong. Can someone point me in the right direction? Is there another way to do this?
Thanks!!

In the settings of the fire stick, or the adb?
It is already turned on via the stick
The stick. Try toggling it off then on again. Or you can try adbfire. Its here in the themes and apps thread.

Will do...
I appreciate the feedback, but as mentioned in the OP, I tried the ADBFire and it transfers apps well, but transferring files doesn't work for me.
You could use Dropbox or Google Drive... Save them to the cloud, then download them on the stick.

Is there a way to transfer apks and files directly to fire stick with usb?

I know I can transfer via adb over my network but is there a way to transfer apks and files directly to the fire tv stick? Has anyone been able to access the file system without registering the device. I remember a long time ago on the fire tv's there was a way to do this via adb but can this be done with a hard cable directly from computer?
Go to this site to get drivers for fire stick, install them , and plug your fire stick in with just usb to your computer(wait for windows to say your hardware is ready to use). You can also install apps using adb. Worked for me on Windows 10.

Thank you for that link and info. Do you know if I have to log into an account before doing this transfer? Or can I just open the package plug it in and transfer the files?
I was already logged in, so don't know. But you don't have register the stick. Try plugging it in and see if windows will recognize it.

Firetv stick 4k bricked

I unlocked the bootloader, I did a wipe data and now the firestick is stuck on the firetv black screen, cant access the menu, cant connect through adb with the computer connected via usb.
I can access TWRP with otg cable and mouse, but I dont have any rom to flash on device, so I cant reflash it, I dont have access to adb to push it either.
If I connect a usb hub to the otg, and connect the mouse and a usb stick at the same time, can I access the usb stick memory to flash the rom zip file?
Help
Update:
Problem solved I did the unlock bootloader process again as Pretoriano80 advised and it worked, I got access again to TWRP, used adb to push the rom and flashed the rom again.
Thank you.

Yes, if you connect a mouse + usb stick (fat32) you will be able to flash a stock rom. In TWRP you will have to switch from internal memory to the OTG stick.
Thank you for the answer thats good news.
So any usb hub should work right, i will have to buy one.

If TWRP works, then you can push a stock firmware from PC to the FireTV Stick with ADB. Just make sure that your stick is connected to your pc with the original USB cable (not OTG).
I already tried.
When connecting directly to pc, no otg cable, I cant use adb, looks like after I wiped data the device lost the adb.
I tried adb shell it says no devices/emulators
I tried adb devices, none listed
So I cant connect through adb, I cant access recovery nor I can push the flashable rom.
The only way I can access is with otg cable + mouse.
That leaves me with only one option, use the hub to connect mouse + stick to the otg cable and flash through otg usb in TWRP.

TWRP's ADB should work, but probably you can't boot into TWRP without OTG. The solution is to do the unlock procedure again so after the last step it should boot to TWRP automatically.
If that fails, then you can buy an USB hub.
Thank you for helping really appreciate that.
I will run the procedure again, will keep you posted about the results.
Ok tried it
No response from device
After ./bootrom-step.sh it says waiting for bootrom, I do the short connect the device but the computer doesnt recognize it, keeps saying waiting for bootrom no matter what I do.
So I think theusb hub is the only resource now.

Ok Tried again, it works, am on TWRP with adb, pushing the flashable now, will keep updated.
Update:
Good news
Firetv fixed, thank you very much!

Great! No problem, it happened to me once and has been the only that worked for me (without the need of an usb hub, of course), so i was pretty sure that it would work for you too.
