HTC M9 force AC fastcharge? (with stock kernel, or a kernel recommendation) - One (M9) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, so in theory this should be a sort of straightforward question, but I'm not sure there is a good solution yet. I've found that the M9 is veeeeeery conservative with charge speeds and rating chargers it deems worthy to give it fast charge speeds. With that comes many reputable third-party chargers giving the phone little to no juice, and I would like to override this.
So what I'm looking for is a way to tweak the charge speed allowed manually. On my Google Play Edition S4, this was called fastcharge (not quickcharge, not interested in buying one of those, as every charger I have has more than one usb port and I'd like to keep it that way). It was something that I found on a custom kernel and allowed you to set a max charge speed for both AC and USB charging (with AC being able to be tweaked all the way to 1900mAh).
With all that being said, does anyone know how to allow something like this with the stock kernel? I've seen a couple kernels that advertise this as a feature, but they also all seem to be in beta, and have bugs that aren't squashed yet. I'm on Viper 1.6 if that helps at all, and any help with this would be appreciated!

LeeDroid Kernel v2

and the LeeDroid kernel will work on Viper rom? Have you experienced any problems with it so far (if you're using it)

None here and have been using it for some time now. Very snappy, superb battery and very fast boot. Using with insert coin currently and controlling with "adiutor" kernel app. Working flawlessly here

Okay then. I'll do a nandroid and give it a try, thanks!

ElementalX is great

It's a shame that you find the HTC One M9 charge rate to be too slow but don't wish to do the only thing that will give impressively fast charging with stock software: obtain a Qualcomm certified fast charge 2.0
The fast charge capability comes from using chargers that use higher voltage than the standard 5 volt.
Higher voltage leads to higher charge current which shortens charge time.

I think you just need a 2A charger. I get very quick charge time with the Nexus 6 charger.
Why HTC didn't include this is beyond stupid. This thing is capable of charging to full in an hour or less
The thing kernels have is USB fastcharge, which increases the current when connected to a computer USB port.

Thing is, I have a ton of chargers that should be able to pull more than 2 amps, and have on other phones. I have an Anker one (with charge detection up to 2.4 a port I believe) and an Aukey one that's the same. Also have the stock HTC and Samsung S4 one, those do seem to pull about 1-1.5 out of it but the third party ones aren't doing anywhere near what they should be (normally getting betweeen 3-800 out of them, topping out at about 1 amp).
And yeah I've found that out about the kernels so far, USB only. I was thinking that based on the reading but I figured I would try. I wonder when/if an AC fast charge will be implemented, or if it even can (not sure how it works with quick charge 2.0 interfaces). My S4 did have the setting for both USB and AC so I was hoping to find the same for this. It's not a huge huge deal, but I would like it if possible. Or if a company could come out with a slightly affordable 4 or 5 port charger with at least one or two QC 2.0 slots that'd be lovely as well.

There's one on Amazon
It's from a manufacturer called CHOE or CHLOE
It's a 5 port charger with 2 ports capable of quick charge 2.0 and rest of the 3 ports upto 1.5 or 2 amps
It remains for 30ish

Yeah they were the first ones to get it and now a few others are too, but 35 is still just a liiiiiiiittle steep for me to pay. Thanks for looking out though, appreciate it.

What app are you guys using to check your charging speed? I used galaxy charging current on my S4, but it obviously doesn't work on this device. I've tried a few from the play store but nothing seems reliable.

Ampere is good. It had a hard time reading an octacore on a fast charger (one of those two was giving it issues) at first but recent updates seem to have sorted it out.

problems charging the note 2 in the car - any ideas?

here is my setup in the car and i can't get the note to charge - well, it does say its charging but at best it will maintain my charge level it never actually charges
dedicated charger into my fuse box
note hooked up with mhl to my pioneer appradio 2
gps running, mhl running, bluetooth running. i use a screen off app to totally black out the screen.
now, this setup with my gs3 worked perfectly it would charge the gs3 like crazy as fast as a wall charger it seemed. with the note it will never increase in charge but at best maintain or slowly use charge. the power it is getting cannot keep up with all the tasks its doing.
now, i know this phone is a beast...but can anyone think of anything for me to try or buy to get this charging no matter what? i figure it may take custom kernals or something like that to finally get it done.
that being said - if you are using an android phone you absolutely must check out the pioneer appradio 2 with the appradio liberator app. you hook the phone up via mhl and with the app have full touchscreen control and mirroring of your phone on the 7inch touchscrreen radio display its pretty awesome.

my chargers i the car claim to be 2a but doesn't seem to make a difference. hell, the one charger would chage an ipad in the past
most samsung tablets need an adapter to "trick" fast charging mode on non-samsumg chargers. otherwise it'll just trickle charge. i've not tried any yet but seems i may have to since the gnote2 is gonna need the same juice as my gn101. kinda what i expected since they're pretty much the same specs.
here's a thread to make your own adapter:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=845844
page 9 has a few links buy your own. just put .com in place of .co.uk on the ebay links.
here one for $3. ships from china so it may take a few weeks.
the stock AC charger supplied with the note 2 is 2A. I also have a 2A car charger. I cannot get the note to charge at any rate higher than 1A. Yes, i do know the trick to get the phone to go into fast charge mode. I have a feeling that 1A is the most we are going to get. Yes, if you have a ton of stuff running all at once you are going to use more than 1A and end up with a dead battery after a while. It does suck. My previous phone (Epic) would not charge beyond .5A. It died while on my car charger ALL the time. Hopefully this one wont die quite as often.

Yes, the trick i use is to short the two data lines going to the phone NOT towards the charging source. If you do not do this the phone will be in USB mode which will only allow a charging rate of .38A. This seems to be an android/usb standard across almost all vendors. once i short the data lines that is when the phone will go into full charging mode. The highest i can get the phone to go is 1A and this is even with the supplied Samsung 2A charger. I have also tried an iPad charger and it still only produced 1A to the Note II.
The Note II also seems to vary the input current based on how much battery is left. If the Note is very low (i.e. 50%) it will go into 1A. If the battery is high (i.e.95%), the current will bounce around. I have seen it start at .5A, jump to .8A, then to 1A, then right back down to .5A and it will continue there until it reaches 100%.
Bottom line i have not seen anything above 1A
JD
at least one of the adapters on the other thread claims 2A, but i don't think i've seen anyone with those results.
this is a pretty ridiculous problem for samsung to do nothing about is it not? the notion that you can't even charge your note in the car is a bit ridiculous. i wonder if someone makes a kernal with fast charging enabled if we'll be able to get around this

You can't charge if you are intensively using the phone though. it loses charge.
Is there a specific car charger yet for the Note 2? I imagine this issue will be resolved with that charger.
People with the HTC Flyer/Evo View had similar issues. Unless we use HTC proprietary car charger, you lose power while plugged in. Standard usb chargers, charge it very slowly.

Using the Current Widget app (which shows you the mAh) it registers 9882 mA for one of the usb slots and 10005 mAh for the other using the Galaxy Note 1.

instead of using a usb plug charger use a stand alone charger (also called a wall wart) they do charge faster.

Most care chargers are 750 mA, the Galaxy nexus requires a 1A charger. I would double check the amp output on your charger and if it's not up to snuff, get a new one.. I highly recommend the iPad2 chargers (2.1 amp), just use your own cable.

this is what i use:
http://www.belkin.com/us/p/P-F8Z689
Edit:
Also check your phone when charging, it should say "AC charging" if it's "USB Charging" then the phone itself is limiting the charging to .5 amps.
I'll keep that in mind. I'm too much of a rush. I'm going off roading on Saturday and don't have enough time to get it delivered. I'll be passing by best buy after work today
I'm guessing this I'd while in the car. I would look for a better car charger. I got a rocket fish one from best buy. Seems to be 1000mA

Are you leaving the screen on too? That will definitely have an impact. Also I notice on longer car rides when I'm pushing my phone (i.e. streaming plus nav, etc.) it will overheat and stop charging at some point. I tend to leave the screen off while driving unless I absolutely need it.
so I got that Belkin 2.1 charger and it worked. didn't have to find a charger cord, just used the stock cord. I'm happy

[APP][ROOT][KT] Fast Charge Toggle widget

I love @ktoonsez kernel I also LOVE his fast charging option. Was using schools computer to charge and was charging at 900 mA love it.
Got tired of going through the app to toggle this. So i made a widget that can be placed on the home screen or the lock screen. Im sorry, the image is hideous. xD wasnt too sure of what to use as an image so bear with me xD
Just install the APK then either on your home screen or your lock screen add a widget and select Fast Charge Toggle. Done. Will prolly work on other kernels with fast charging option but only tested on @ktoonsez kernel
From almost totally dead, it takes me about two hours for a full charge with normal charging.
I've never bothered with tweaking charging settings. How much faster would fast charging accomplish the same thing?

It has no side effect on the battery. The stock charger has I think like 2a charging power, most computers have only 500mA. Fast charging simply tricks the kernel into thinking it's plugged into a wall outlet and charges at the full power available. The only side affect is that it could ruin the USB port. However after two years of using it I have never seen any issues myself nor have I read any.

According to what I personally saw in the source code and what @ktoonsez said, the fast charging gets ignored when it's an ac charger. Just going off of source code and what the code actually does. I have a car charger that has a spare USB plug on it. If I use the actual car charger it charges as normal, but when I plug in the white USB cord that came with the phone into the same car charger it definitely charges almost twice as fast. Living proof. I was on a road trip using GPS and LTE while streaming music. While on the car charger it would almost not charge at all, just supplement enough to not drop in percentage. Then, when I switch to the other USB it charges up no problem.. Really works.

First off, Thank you for making this and sharing it to the community. I have been looking for something just like this. Comes in very handy.
I don't know if you update this anymore, but I was wondering if you could make a choice for different icons for the widget. If not, no big deal, the icon is just a little too cartoon-y for me.

I just googled "maximum usb milliamp output from a standard computer usb port" and to my
surprise I must have found at least 25 links which I read that deals with this subject.
And all of them specifically point out that a normal laptop or desktop computer's usb port puts
out a maximum of 500 milliamps unless someone has some special usb pci/pcie card installed
inside their home computers, I never seen any that do but it is possible that such a card exists.
So this mod would really not do anything at all, it would not charge faster and it could not hurt
the usb ports of any computer since it cannot change the max. milliamp output of the usb port.
Now if we had some kind of special program which we install in our computers to allow the usb
ports to put out 2amps (2000 milliamps) then it would charge just as fast as our wall AC chargers do.
But modifying anything inside our phones cannot change the fact that it's the computer and it's usb
ports which determines what the maximum amount of milliamps that it can output.
Look at it this way, if you have a 5 gallon gas can you cannot pour 10 gallons of gasoline out of it.

The maker of this (ktoonsez) stated this in his thread. However, a lot of computers (newer ones) do have higher power outputs to power things like external hard drives, cooling fans... etc. For instance, mine, when paired with the fast charging mod, outputs 700ma but without, stays at 500ma. So while you are correct, there are a lot of computers (especially newer) that do have huger output ratings. This is clearly seen when my external hard drive won't work on my grandfather's dinosaur computer (even his new printer has issues). But plugged into my laptop, it's has no problem.
Also, I believe USB 3.0 has a 1amp output.

You know what, you are just about right, I just did some more googling and found
that the usb 3.0 ports on newer computers do have a greater output than 500milliamps.
They have a maximum of 900milliamps, still no where near the 2000milliamp which
the home charger puts out, but it's close to double of the standard usb 2.0 ports.
I read that many newer computers including mine has a dedicated 3.0 port which stays awake
even if we turn the computer off & it continues charging whatever is plugged into the 3.0 port.
So 900milliamps is a lot better than 500milliamps when comparing usb 2.0 to 3.0 however
current is current, the phone itself cannot distinguish between a 500milliamp or 900milliamp
charging rate, if it gets 900ma it will charge a lot faster than if it only gets 500 milliamps.
All cell phones have a safety feature built into their circuitry which prevents us from charging
the phone at a higher rate than what Samsung specifies by plugging it into a charger which puts
out more than 2amps, if the phone did not have that circuitry it would dramatically shorten the life
of the battery.
That's why Samsung ships 2amp home chargers with their phones and not a 2.5 or a 3amp one.
If this mod which is being discussed here defeats the safety feature in the phone's circuitry which
prevents it from being charged too fast then I would highly advise against installing or using it.
The only time a higher rated battery charger should be used is if we have an extended battery
which was rated at let's say 4200milliamps in which case a 3-4 amp charger would be best.

It doesn't defeat the security of built in kernel protection. Androids own API has a way to detect if the plug is wall charger or USB. The mod simply tells android OS that the USB charger is an AC charger and to not limit charging to USB levels. That's why USB doesn't work when the mod is enabled. It's no way harmful to the device. Been using it since I've gotten my phone and even back on my s3.

You're right!! The widget is the ugliest thing I've ever seen but it works perfect! Thank you much!!

Okay, see what you mean.
Did you know that there are 3 or 4 free apps at the playstore which display the amount of mA
the phone is being charged with at any given time, it also displays the maximum mA that the
charger or usb port can charge. Here are a couple links in case you or anyone is interested:

Charging The 10.1

I lost the original charger to my 10.1 2014 Edition and I've had problems ever since. Earlier this week I thought I would order a Limefuel 24W 4.8A dual port rapid charger. I thought to myself: Hey I can untick Power saving and have all my needed apps running. Even using a root mod to run 4 way multitasking. Yet it's still sucking up more juice than the charger is spitting out. Am I doing something wrong or did I get a faulty unit from China? This was NEVER a problem when using the Damn Samsung charger along with the foreign adapter dongle it shipped with. I thought getting one so powerful would charge it even faster.
Maybe I should just ship it back and get an official unit from Samsung? Although I don't see how getting less energy will make the tablet charge any better

4.8 amp should do the trick. Could be a fake unit. Is it heavy? 4.8 amp is pretty much, so it should be as big as a lap top charger.
But remember , a cheap usb cable may also be the problem. Try a short one of good quality.
Edit.Just tried a 1.2 amp Nexus 5 charger on my P605. Charging good on full brightness.
Thanks

The charging circuitry and s/w on the device determine charging speed. Do a search. Someone posted the different charging amperages using the stock charge and Apple and HTC chargers and USB cables. The device detected the latter and charged at about half of the former.

Yes thats obvious and i doesnt even need to " do a search ".
The problem was it wouldnt charge at all.
Thanks

Does the p600 also not charge correctly with a non samsung charger? I remember my p1000 requiring an adapter that had a resistor between two connections to charge correctly at a laptop or different charger.

M8 - Max charging current with MHL adapter and battery life

Hey guys,
I currently own a SG4 and briefly tried the older HTC One, but returned it because it didn't meet my specific needs.
I use my phone in conjunction with an APPRADIO headunit so max charging current, battery life as well as a fully functioning MHL adapter (capable of supporting 2amps) is required.
Currently my SG4 has no problems keeping up with current draw and can even charge while in use, however the M7 I tried could barely make it half a day. The only reason I'm comtemplating replacing my Sg4 is due to a BT compatibility issue with Samung and APPRadio that causes BT drops, hence causing me to lose control over the screen via headunit.
My questions to you guys are:
Can you guys charge your M8's at 2 amps?
Can you charge at 2 amps with an mhl adapter installed?
How does the MHL adapter work for you guys?
If you can charge at 2amps, does it require a custom kernel (fast charge)?
Anyone?

Some people have used 2a chargers yes ..The BlackBerry playbook charger is 2a and works fine....as we have no official 2.0quick charge yet.....M8 is far superior to S4..'

But does it actually charge at 2amps with a MHL adapter plugged it?

That I could not say.. I don't use mhl on my phone....just on my tablet.

Just to clarify, I'm not taking about QC 2.0, just standard charging at 5v 2a through a MHL adapter.
It won't charge at any higher a rate then the phone is designed for. No matter the charger.

Doesn't answer my question at all.
Phone was designed to charge at QC 2.0, which is much faster than 5v 2a.
All I'm asking is if someone is actually getting 2a charging with a mhl came connected.
Good luck! ?
Just wanted to chime in about your setup. I have a very similar one in my car right now, however, instead of an appradio, i'm using mimicsX2 and the stock radio's video input. But i'm typically running media apps, streaming, screen on, etc. Instead of an MHL connection though, i'm using a wireless miracast adapter (push2TV). So far, it's been amazing. I can still charge the phone while using all of that and while it does get a tad warm, it's not enough for it to be much of a concern. I've read that people have hooked up miracast adapters to appradios and that it does work fairly well. The only downside i've seen so far is a ~half second delay with interactions. But to directly answer your question, in my experience, charging isn't an issue.
EDIT: Forgot to note one other thing you might want to know about MHL. It seems like only stock-based ROMs work with it, and the adapters are quite limited. If you get an adapter that is MHL 1.0 it makes the phone run at 24 or 30 FPS and the UI lags like crazy. However, all of the 2.0+ adapters all seem like they are the short variety, so if you're trying to hide the adapter somewhere in the car and just run the one wire out, you may need to buy an extender. ALSO, note that the M8 uses standard MHL and NOT the proprietary 11 pin one that Samsung uses.
EDIT2: Looks like monoprice has them on sale today for ~$7 (double check that this is MHL2.0 though) http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=108&cp_id=10833&cs_id=1083314&p_id=8675&seq=1&format=2
I think the software only allows the mate to charge at 1500ma tops as of now.
Really unsure, because the stock charger provides 1.5A of current. I don't have a 2A charger to test, sorry.
