M9 Overheating? - Verizon HTC One (M9)

HI All!
Looking forward to purchasing an M9. I have owned the Incredible, Rezound, and M8.
I have been reading around, and I am seeing some overheating issues with this phone. Has anyone experienced issues like this? If so, would running a more efficient ROM possibly resolve this issue?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
996

I've had mine for a week now, and only had heat issues when using Waze in the car and leaving the screen on while driving. At the end of my hour long commute, the phone would be very hot. To resolve that, I just keep the screen off until I need to look at it.
Other than that, I haven't noticed it being any warmer than any other smartphone I've had (Galaxy S3, S4, and iPhone 4)

If you survived the rezound, then this is nothing. It does heat up faster than the m8 though and I think it's mostly software related. I've noticed an insane improvement in heat and battery life after a new rom. It never over heated though. It just got warm faster than I was used to on the m8. It's about the same as my m8 now.

My car mount attaches to the far left driver side air vent, so the AC keeps it very cool while running Waze, streaming Google play and whatever else. Otherwise I'm sure it would be toasty!

Not too bad, but I got this error once on an earlier build of ViperOne

I've also had that a few times. Only when it's 80 degrees out and my phone is in the Car Dock with screen on. Mine does get a bit warm if I am charging it and making the phone work (Ex. Playing even simple games). It's not a bad "overheat" by any means, but noticeable.
I've also heard some people having it heat up and crack the lens on the camera... good news on this is that HTC is aware of the issue and you don't need to use your Uh-Oh protection--it's part of the 1 year standard warranty coverage.

I have the cracked camera lens due to overheating. Link on more information about being covered under standard warranty?
Thanks

It does definitely get warm quicker than the m8 but I've never had it overheat. Usually around 117 is where it will peak and average use around 100. Still pretty warm to the touch likely due to the aluminium body. I'm sure tweaks to shut down cores/undervolt/etc can make a difference when they become available. If you are very concerned about heat, stay with the M8. Additionally until sunshine is updated for verizon devices, you'll need to find someone with a java card if you want to root and start tweaking.

Yeah I have got this several times in the vehicle. Never had it happen with my m8

I'm not so sure HTC is aware of the issue, it looks to me like the HTC rep did him a favor and granted him a warranty replacement. My email to HTC claims they are not aware of an issue with the camera lens.

I'll hold my final opinion until I get this thing S-Off, unlocked and rooted...but now that I've been using this thing stock as my daily driver the past week (I still have my S-Off, unlocked, rooted M8...I just swap my SIM in it when I need mobile hotspot)...despite some very good aesthetic changes, I find this phone frustrating:
it doesn't overheat...but it gets warm QUICKLY. to the point that the M8 is a faster device. At optimum..the m9 is faster...but once it starts working it really starts to suck.
I know bench marks arent everything....but optimum on Quadrant I'll score 30-34,000.....when it's working and very warm and feels sluggish...I'm putting up 19-20,000.
The m8....no matter what I do to it I am always between 24-27000. Summation..when you are actually using the phone...the M8 is and feels better/faster despite having lower specs.
Boomsound with Dolby....it's nice...but this thing needs the H/K mod....my M8 sounds better....and is actually "louder" though maybe that could be the stock software on M9 limiting output.
Battery is abysmal...well not abysmal but not good....something is up, may be my phone...but the radio on my phone is draining the damn thing. This morning...I was off the charger (100%) for 5 minutes...it drained 4% with the radio sucking 40% of that...no clue what's going on there lol A reboot usually will cure that but still it's annoying.
Again, I have a feeling a lot of this will be remedied once I get this thing S-Off and Viper running on it....but right now not a big fan.

I can confirm for you that rooting and viper will solve your problems. My battery life is great now and my phone barely gets warm now. Amazing how software can make THAT much of a difference.

Yeah...just got done with my crazy work period...headed to Myrtle for some R&R...and some non R&R...Pennsylvania trip is on my agenda after memorial day...I'll be in touch
Right after my rant this morning I had a great power cycle on my phone today...go figure lol.
But half the time the radio has a mind of its own LOL

This is me on stock (no root) while charging, flashlight on, GPS on, 4G on, USB tether on, torrenting at 30mbps and spam opening apps and gaming. The phone got laggy (felt like it was under clocked to 700mhz) and... Look at that temp.

Poor phone

And you are shocked your phone got hot? It is a camera flash for a phone, not a flashlight. I thought it was common knowledge to not leave flashlight on for long cause (it gets too hot)

By far the easiest way to keep the phone cool is to enable power save mode and turn off some of the CPU cores. For my use, the performance difference is minimal and I can always turn them back on if I want the extra cpu power. See the battery life thread for instructions on enabling power save mode with a nova launcher widget. If you're rooted, you can edit the settings.db in data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases and unhide the power save mode from the standard power settings menu.

Hmm. Alright, so what I've gathered:
Root. S-OFF. Problems will be solved. Anyone have an idea when Sunshine will be available for the M9? I remember I used it for my M8.

HTC Desire Overheating Issue

Is anyone else experiencing this? Surprised how hot my phone got from mild usage earlier today. A search on google seems to imply that it's quite widespread
Only really had issues when using sat nav, used it for an hour , while on with phone plugged in charger, the back was very hot to say the least.
The weather is unusually hot today. Maybe that's a factor?
heat is an issue i didn't know about before i bought it and it was really sad when i found out.
i suggest you to get a case so that you dont feel it so much
Never personally had any heat issues on mine. Are you using the stock ROM?
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
I am using the stock rom.
Mine gets very hot when charging and using Maps Navigation. Sometimes it even restarts itself even if I'm on a stock ROM when using navigation.
Same problem here! I was only using the SatNav around 15 minutes yesterday and the phone was pretty warm. Not sure if the warm weather played a part. I wasn't charging the phone at the same time.

look here. i've managed to solve overheating issue!

The overheating isn't even happening when i use any heavy apps. just having it on causes it to emit an uncomfortable temperature. the heat itself is coming out from the bottom part of the phone, just below the battery. is that where the cpu is?

SAme as me, but the phone doesn't get any hotter than my old Iphone 3Gs or my old HTC HD2, GPS always heats the phone up.
They have safety Protocols built in to shut down when they get too hot though, so I would be too worried about it.
Mine gets very hot. I am using stock Rom and no mods. Mine hits into a reset loop when it gets hot too and I have to remove the battery to let it cool down.

I've never had an issue with my Desire crazily overheating but every time I pick up my friend's it's boiling. I guess if you're concerned you could give HTC a ring.

it's barely a few weeks old. quite depressing sending it off for repair so soon.
I had a xperia x1 before, which had a metal battery cover, and still the back got extremely hot, I think record battery temp was about 55°C while using gps in car and charching. Under same conditions never had temp > 40°C with my desire (probably a newer one, allready had latest rom on stock).

yep. i came from an xperia too... and it also got very hot. was hoping to get away from that with the desire.
my old xda used to warm up that bad i had to put it into the aircon stream when driving so it would work again. so i cant complain about the temp of the desire.

The thing is - I'm still using my xperia. I've not put the sim card into the desire yet :S the overheating happens when i just doing very low level activity on it. Not even tried GPS yet.
Oh that's definitely not right! It actually sounds pretty dangerous to me. If it's going into HTC they'll get it sorted

Overheating, random reboots.. out of warrenty

Hi, I have a HTC desire, its nice but it gets hot latley when playing games like angry birds for a bit when the battery drops to 20% or so, and I plug in in.. it starts doing reboot cycle.. I think it only happens until the phone cools down.
I know the only real fix for this is a new mainboard, but I am not under warrenty..
any suggestions on how to live with it, or work with it.. someone told me a bad sim card or sd card might do this to the phone... I have already put 2.3 on it and factory reset and such...
thanks
How old is it? In the eu the warranty is 2 years.
Sent from my Motorola Startac running Atari 2600 software!
Wow, good to see im not the only one. I have the same problems, and depending on the rom they get worse or better. im running CM7 now and i have little problems, but when i was running the ICS beta it happend a lot, both on and of the charger and in my pants pocket or out.
If its overheated and i take out the battery i can smell a sort of molten plastic / overheated electronics smell.
for me it was the same - main problem is motherboard.
in the end service center exchanged for me motherboard and now this problem is gone.
but before this exchange i did following:
* decreased max cpu speed to 576-768MHz (via SetCPU)
* in one of old kernels I was able to manipulate with CPU voltage level, so i was decreasing it for all freq. which was used by me.
* charging only via PC usb ports - when it was able to be fully charged and not overheat
but the proper way would be only to bring your device into service center...
I would also suggest decreasing the max speed
might be that sleep mode doesn't work entirely as it should in some roms, not making the CPU frequency drop enough when the screen is off.
And your device might be getting old and wear is starting to show.
If it's actually damaged, replacing parts may be the only solution
This is a known problem for the first devices. The solution is to change the motherboard, of course at the service center.

You need to pick a good firmware I worth Runnymede AIO V 5.0.1 Special Edition-> Base Runnymede 1.22.461.2 Official Sensation sense 3.5 Android 2.3.5 [CM7/r2] [STOCK] [AD2SDX] [A2SD] [BEATS] [RCTWEAKS] [Aroma Touch Installer]
no problems found! the same problems arise Earlier.
How did you void your warranty? Rooting or installing custom does not void hardware warranty. At least I got my pvt1 motherboard replaced even when I had rooted and used superglue to fix some broken plastic under back cover.
Sent from my HTC Runnymede
Ya, the phone is just out of warrenty, it really is only 1 year in Canada.. no ifs ands or butts...
But the phone only seems to do the reboot loop when I play angry birds when the battery is low and or when I play angry birds when the phone is charging ..
I think it happend once in google street view...
in other words intense apps... that make the phone warm up and then the sensor tells the phone to restart to protect the processor from overheating, but when the phone reboots the thing is still hot so it keeps rebooting.. only solution is to take the phone battery out and let it cool..
I guess this problem could get worse but it doesn't happen with normal web browsing at this point. I might have to live with it until I find someone to replace the mainboard cheaper than HTC wants.. otherwise not worth it.
I guess lowering the CPU max might be great so it doesn't overheat in the 1st place, I will try that.
I don't really understand rom, I have 2.3 gingerbread, is there something else I can change to perhaps get a better radio signal on this puppy ?
THanks GUys
I have this problem, although until recently it only when trying to use it as satnav.
I'm glad to hear it's a known problem though.
I contacted my provider and they said perhaps the battery is getting tired and causing it to reboot due to lack of power. I pointed out that it was the other components near the sim & sd card slots that were getting hot, not the battery, so they sent me another one. I did buy another battery too and that has made no difference either. As soon as I rooted the replacement phone it started getting warm too. I'm also pretty sure that the "replacement" was a refurbed one, since the optical joystick doesn't always respond and when typing msgs sometimes the vibe feedback stops working mid-word.
It's very frustrating not being able to use it for navigation any more (although it works happily with My Tracks for recording routes).
However since I've rooted it, I don't think I'd get away with requesting another replacement phone. I've tried installing other rom's that might run cooler, but when I do they always lock at the HTC splashscreen and I have to restore nandroid backup.
Hello,
i'm new to XDA developers. Should i buy this phone? I'm thinking about it these days but i'm not sure if it is worth. Thanks for your answers.
The same Problem on my Phone! While charging i can not use my Phone.
My solution: Don't touch while charging. :-(
I think I have same problem...my Desire in regular use get worm at 35% and at 38% burns my hand...and what is wors, for 15/20 min. regular use(not havy or gaming) temp. rise from 28% to 37% but something confuse me...last night I play 3d games for an 1 hour and at 20 min. I put it on charger and continue to play games and 40 min. later temp. is 40% and stil no reboot but butom side of phone(not battery...front side (buttons and screen) and back side) is so hot that I can burn my hand on it. I put statistic that battery indicator show(time,%,temp.). So is it like that to you guys? Is your phone have that heat thing for 15 min. of regular use?
Its pic of last night 3D gaming and its all statistic of temp./ % / time...

simply installed it, and it had it run at lowest speed on idle so it could remain cooler
(you can check the settings on it to see what it runs on idle and modify to your needs anyway)
I have similar problem like yours. I suspect the problem is come from SIM because there is no this kind issue happened IF turn to flight mode or tool out the SIM.

Galaxy Nexus Overheating

So I just got the Galaxy Nexus (upgraded from the Nexus S) and just after the first day of use (no heavy workload, wifi or GPS) this thing became painfully hot. We're talking touch it to your skin and *ouch* hot. Strangely the massive heat output seems to be limited to just the top quarter of the device. Also note that it takes only about 10min until it reaches 'unusable' status.
Does anyone else have experience with this problem? Admittedly I was warned by the provider I got it from that they had had feedback from customers about it's excessive heat output and other people I know have also commented to the same affect. But I never thought it would be quite this bad. I could fry an egg on this thing. Considering my Nexus S never had this issue - this is disappointing. Are we talking hardware design fail? Or perhaps a bad batch in my country?
If this was an iPhone they'd be headlines going on about 'heat-gate' and Larry Page coming out saying that we're 'cooling it wrong' lol
the nexus does get abit hot around the camera area, but it shouldnt be THAT hot lol.. what are the ambient tempreatures around where you're using the phone?

Not that hot - maybe 20-25c
Perhaps monitor battery temp with an app, it won't give you a precise indication of your processor temp, but there should be a correlation. The phone does get warm around the camera area, but never painfully so (for me). Was your AOS usage abnormally high?
I think the OP is overreacting just a little, if it burned you then the phone would have melted
Anyways, its perfectly normal. the OMAP4 chipset runs really hot, I read somewhere that it operates normally between 85-105 degrees Fahrenheit.
Here it says that the OMAP4 platform has a temperature range of -40° to 85°C. I think thats overstating it, but its all there

Well let me put it this way. It's hot enough for me to consider claiming on warranty. No phone should generate that much heat right next to your head/ear. That's unusable in real terms (at least with this particular one). And i've had my fair share of android phones in the past to compare...

The Tegra2 chipset runs VERY hot when overclocked as well, I've had hot experiences on both my Galaxy Tab 10.1 and my G2x, and I can also say that the OMAP4 runs hotter than that! Just offering opinion is all, it's perfectly normal for it to be running extra hot, and it happens fairly quickly.
I completely agree with you that the phone does get abnormally hot, but then again, from my experience, so does the RAZR with a sister chip in it.

Android 4.0.1, stock Nexus Galaxy, going on 2 weeks. It's in an otterbox defender case, after 1.5 hours of running video it's warm in my hands, but that's under constant workload that nearly drained the whole battery. In other words during normal operation I am not finding the serious problem you are describing. Empathy out to you.
What temps we're talking about? Mine stays at +36C +38C while browsing web/watching youtube and gets a bit (around +41C) hotter when playing games. And these temps are far from hot-to-touch.

Sometimes my GN becomes really hot too. It also happens when i'm watching hd video for a half an hour or more. Then it turns terribly hot.
mine goes to 48C and then it starts lagging like hell
Mine gets warm around the camera and earpiece. It's pretty normal, I'd say.

There are multiple threads on this, but I'll say what I've said before: it's a dual core device, it runs hot, it's not "overheating" unless your phone is crashing, shutting down, or otherwise obviously malfunctioning in some way other than getting hot.
What do you mean by "it reaches 'unusable' status" though? Are you just afraid of using it because it seems hot? Mine gets quite hot when I use it heavily...have kept it going for several hours in this state (while plugged in) with no other issues.
Mine gets hot in the same area, but it has never been that hot, just warm. My OG Droid was OCd to 1.3ghz and that literally reached 150+ degrees F quite a few times and is still fine to this day. The OMAP SoCs seem to run a bit hotter than others, but they can definitely handle the heat.

Basically out of the many smart phones i've had in the past. This is the first that I would say I would refuse to hold it up next to my ear due to the excessive heat. It's bad enough just holding it landscape to type on let alone sticking next to my head. It's really annoying considering how otherwise the interface and physical design of the device is better then anything else i've seen on the market.
I think i'm going to get one of those laser thermometers to find just what the temp on the surface of this thing actually is.

It's hot on the back of the phone like other uses have said, not the front where your ear would be (unless it is which is an entirely different problem). Plus, when your phone reaches those temps through extraneous use (videos, games), you normally wouldn't be putting it near your ear anyways. I don't see this as a huge issue. If you do something taxing, much like a computer, expect the phone to work a little bit harder and hotter.
Oh and I doubt it's hot enough to fry an egg. You would smell the plastic melt first.
I've had once when my GNex was really hot. It was when I try factory reset many times since there was a bug that factory reset does nothing in a custom rom. But I didn't know at that time. I tried reset, flash rom, reset, etc. My GNes ended up really hot.
The only time my galaxy nexus got really hot was when I was switching kernels every 2-3 days, and one kernel (I think it was one of Franco's earlier builds) made it run hot even when I wasn't using the phone that intensely. Changed the kernel, and it's never been hot since (I play games, listen to music, browse web, push notifications, etc.) I don't do much video/HD streaming though...
I have been getting that too. Around the earpiece gets warm when only slightly used. Also, I can hear a faint buzzing humming sound from there. Open the back cover..can hear it from the camera too. Is something wrong with my phone

Brand new Nitro getting really hot

This thing gets hot. I've had an HTC Hero, LG Optimus, and HTC Evo 4G before (all on Sprint) and none of them got hot unless I was charging it and talking on the phone.
But this Nitro gets hot after just a minute of browsing the internet, or even just playing with the settings (ie not using the radio). It's not the battery getting hot either. It's up on top of the phone around the camera. I have no idea what's causing it.
Anyone else experiencing this?
Yeah.. that happens to all of us. Under-volting helps a bit.
Welcome to the hell that is the Nitro's constant overheating!
Well I'm glad I'm not the only one experiencing it! lol
Maybe I won't notice it so much when my Body Glove comes in today.

Depending on how new your phone is, if you can still return it I would honestly suggest doing that. This phone WAS good when it was first released, but the other offerings on the market now (HTC one X, galaxy S 3, Galaxy Note, Galaxy Nexus) blow it away.
The screen is awesome, but you can't only base a phone's performance on it's screen quality.

The bodyglove will get hot as well. Only happens to mine once in a while when I'm using it heavily.
It's a software issue I believe. If after using ur browser of the Facebook app and hit home then open the stock application manager u will see the browser can use up to 28% and Facebook spiking to 70% CPU usage and since the small logic board holding the core CPU is at the top of the phone it can cause the overheating in that area

It's my work phone, and I don't think any of those better phones would cost the same amount. I had to pull all kinds of strings just to get into an Android. I can't be any more of a PITA and exchange it now.

Gotcha.
Does anyone know if CM9 fixes this? Or maybe the ICS update will?
The phone will always get hot if you are heavily using the CPU, regardless of what ROM you're using. That is considered normal. It doesn't mean your phone or ROM is defective UNLESS your phone is rebooting when it gets too hot (i.e., it's overheating).
The Nitro is just designed with a CPU that gets hotter than most.
mine doesn't get hot. warm yes. hot, not in the slightest.
Mine starts to get hot after about 10 minutes on a voice call. After about 20 minutes I have to go to speaker phone because it's just uncomfortable to have next to my ear. I'm hoping that this is a software issue and that it gets resolved with the official ICS release.
lg lu6200
my lg lu6200 also gets very hot while playing games but stays at normal temperature while internet browsing

? snapdragon is in alot of phones wtf are u talking about.
mine only got "hot" one time, when i left it in the direct sunlight in the car with the windows up and was shopping for 30 min or so, when i came back it was hot, i left it on mistake.
other than that i've only had it very warm a few times, when charging while doing heavy usage, this is because your battery gets real hot, you can get widgets that give you the temperature of your battery, which is more likely to overheat than your cpu, unless your cpu is overclocked too much.
if your phone is getting warm brand new, your battery is getting broken in, don't panic, keep an eye on it though and it should break in over time. my battery got warm alot faster when it was new, and it didn't get as much lifespan as it does now, as far as i know this is normal.

Reports of Dimming On Over Heating

Just read the review by PC Mag, and I have to admit it's making me a little hesitant to pick up the phone Sunday. Essentially when the phone gets warm it auto dims the screen. I wish he posted more details about the issue.
I've been jazzed about the phone for a couple of weeks now, but it does have some drawbacks for me right out of the box. The non-removable battery, the lackluster camera, and lack of micro-sd slot on the Sprint version. Still I could live with those issues, by and large, but the dimming issue reported by PC Mag has me to the point where I'm reconsidering buying in.
I'm hoping people who get this phone over the weekend weigh in with their experience on the issue.
Here's the relevant excerpt:
"One big problem: I did most of my testing with the screen brightness set to maximum. I noticed it dip considerably after about 10 or 15 minutes of benchmarking. When I checked on it in the phone's Settings, I saw the brightness level had dropped down to 66%. I tried to turn it back up, and got the message, "Unable to brighten more due to high temperature. Try again later." I encountered this issue on multiple occasions. Especially when using processor-intensive applications like games, the top half of the phone becomes increasingly warm. LG claims it has not encountered this issue, but two test units as well as our AT&T model of the phone did the same thing."

Who keeps their phone on max brightness? 66 is twice what my brightness is set on :/
But yes, I will agree that it's an unusual thing to force user to take those measures.

Totally agree. That's why I'm sort of waiting with anticipation for people to get them in their hands and report their experience with that issue. I've got my current phone set to like 30% most of the time, so this is workable, but there are times when I need that brightness maxed out for a significant length of time.
I'm hoping the reports are good. I really want this phone.
If the phone overheats I'm going to ask Sprint to cover the restocking fee when I return it. On the contrary, that's the only review that has mentioned overheating that I could find though.

Yeah but they said it happened with three test sets, with both the AT&T and the Sprint hardware versions. Looks like it dims by design given the warning message they received. That tends to indicate LG knows they run hot on heavy usage.

That's not good news, I'm going to stay optimistic with it since it's already on the UPS truck and if it overheats on any normal use I will return it as defective. In all fairness, I've never had a smartphone that didn't overheat, especially during tethering.

received mine yesterday and I was able to recreate the pc mag error. It wasn't that hot either, wasn't doing much. I'm a bit concerned.

I haven't encountered the error yet, it runs a bit warm, but I keep my screen at about 36% to save battery.
My screen brightness is at 40% and looks great.
People have to understand the powerful hardware runs hotter. It's physics and unfortunately, unlike PC, cars etc, they can't simply install a better cooling system so they use software to tone things down when things get heavy. Also, it's not "overheating" unless the phone acts erratically. Running "hot" does not qualify as "overheating".

More like running warm, I think people might be over reacting a bit whenever this issue is brought up.
This user is reporting random reboots. Also, the sprint rep recommended they pull the battery for about a minute... on the lg optimus g.... with the fixed battery door.

Sorry to hear that. No problems yet. The camera is disappointing, but everything else is working well. The dimming issue is an issue. I was out taking pics to test the camera and needed more brightness but the phone was locked at like sixty three percent or maybe forty three i cant remember.
