[Q] Smart Screen ? - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

G4 does not have "Smart Screen" setting to keep the screen awake while you're looking at it. Is it me or am I missing something ???
Any input ?

come on, anybody ???

I'm having the same problem. I really hope I'm just overlooking a setting.

I really hope so too...

Idk about a "smart screen" but it should have a sleep setting..

Coming from a G2 and G3, smart screen setting never actually worked for me, especially in dark rooms..
I must be doing something wrong.

Ok but where is the setting ? That's what the thread is about...

On my 811 I can't find it either.. Or guest mode

On the G3 it's under General > Gestures. I can't find it either on the G4. They removed the Gestures menu. I did find the call and sound gestures under the Call menu (where you can turn the phone upside down to mute the sound, etc). Perhaps the smart screen is buried in another menu. I looked at the logical Display menu, but it was no where to be found.

even the tv off feature when turning off the screen has been removed as well; so sad that this is one of my fave feature also.

Its in the application manager under all apps and has the option to force close. Maybe we need a way to launch it like in a task launcher.

Yeah the smart screen and screen off effects were both removed. Don't know why, but I emailed Lg to ask and they sent me an email saying that they were very sorry and would forward it to the right department so that my voice can be heard.. I asked about not having guest mode/user profile too as the Tmo edition doesn't have it either.

I called LG and there is no way to enable smart screen. It's in application manager they just forgot the settings for it.

They just forgot to enable the settings for it. That sounds like a major QC error. I love LG, but this phone does sound like it was rushed to market, at least in the US, as it seems most of the issues are on the US versions. It could also be the carrier crap, uh, software, that they added is causing issues.

Theres other apps that use facial, but facial sucks at night and isnt as accurate as kinscreen. I used kinscreen even with my Note 4.
KinScreen doesnt even show up in my battery list

Yeah to me the third party facial recognition apps suck. Kin screen is tge best of them, but I prefer the one Lg had.

Hidden Menu benefits

Hello guys, has the title says, what benefits I can get from the hidden menu on the G4 H811?
I recently turned OFF Fast dormancy mode and I see tons of options like changing bands on LTE or even LTE aggregation.
Any options I can turn on OFF that give positive results?

Not really and sometimes launching those activities outside their intended original source can cause all kinds of crazy **** to happen.. now you can use the app quick shortcut maker and make a direct shortcut to all kinds of system settings and a bunch that you cannot even get to MV system settings menus which is really cool like a direct shortcut to the usage manager that shows your battery running apps and data usage in a single section altogether that's not in the regular settings and all kinds of other settings and some that have been disabled by the carrier… be careful and for god sakes do not touch the system shutdown monitor activity because I saw someone take weeks to figure out how to pool their phone back out from a solid brick where the power wouldn't even come on at all just by clicking launch on that activity lol

I feel ya man better safe than sorry huh lol. But there is some cool stuff mainly making direct Shortcuts to specific system settings is what I do and settings and features the carrier disabled which most always disable something (verizon being the worst, control freaks). Like I can reenable stock launcher themes on my g4 verizon cut out, using the activities. The app QUICK SHORTCUT MAKER is a priceless tool and has practically no limits. Will even let you try the activity in the app just use comon sense and don't hesitate to ask and if you need any other help pm me and I'll take a swing at it. Good luck

New amazing feature I found after Marshmallow update !!!

So, I found this feature by mistake and I have been looking for something about it on the Web and can't find anyone talking about it.
After the Marshmallow update (coincidence or not, someone tell me) I have been able to dim the screen manually whenever I want by covering the whole of the watch screen! It's an amazing feature and doesn't require any proximity sensor or whatever.
Is this really new or am I telling you something so "known" that I should hide myself?
Nevertheless, I felt I should open this thread so that anyone who didn't know it until now, like me, gets to know this amazing feature.
And who already knew, how did huawei manage to do this? The screen must support multi-touch so that it feels several fingers covering the whole screen huh? I've made some tests and it is actually really really accurate.
Try it for yourself :highfive:
This feature worked for me from day one on Huawei, even before the new Marshmallow update.
Cool feature, but been there previously...

Yeah, it's been around for awhile. I guess you didn't go through the introductory demo. I believe the feature has been around since the beginning. I remember seeing it on my old Moto 360 1.0.
On mine it doesn't work? Does it have something to do with the fact that the watch is connected with the iPhone?
Sorry to rain on your parade but as I recall, that was right in the intro tutorial!
Is there a setting to turn this off and on? I can't seem to get this to work. My watch is paired with a Nexus 6.
this feature will work when you have ambient sensor like the 360

This feature uses multiple touch points and does not need an extra sensor. It worked on the Huawei from day one.

i tried by touching whole of my palm into the screen, then it vibrate and the screen is off.
is it work like that ? it's just go into standbye mode, not decreasing the brightness

Weird, maybe it is your watchface. I've tried this with pujie black, go to launcher(menu) and covered the screen.
Watch went to standby, lower brightness, exactly as if it just timed out by itself.

i tried to set always ON = ON, and covered the screen with my palm..
then the screen goes to standbye mode with dim watchface as seems like when the screen time out..
but when setting always On=Off, the screen goes off when covered with my palm. like this ?
hendry yes it supposed to behave like this
I'm pretty sure this function was in the tutorial before marshmallow even.

Ambient Display Fix?

If any of you clever developers / tinkerers know of a 'lite' app to use to fix the non working ambient display issues I.E. pick up to wake doesnt work, a recommendation would be soooo welcome. I looked at apps like gravity etc in the play store, but they are a. rather large and b. the permissions they require are a bit suspect. Thanks in advance
Did not know something was wrong.
So I pick it up it does not wake up, I think is a good thing. When I pick it up and I want a display, I press something and have no problem with that.
This maybe one reason the Pixel XL has an excellent battery life.
At the suggestion of another user here, I installed https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tomer.alwayson
It's reminiscent of Samsung's version but has a lot more customisability. There's also an option to turn of the display completely when the proximity sensor is activated. All of the permissions make perfect sense fit the features you select and it doesn't cause a terrible battery hit.

Ambient display is only meant to flash notifications on the screen in black and white for a short period then turn off. As far as I know, the pick up and bump to wake is an OEM added feature that Motorola, Samsung, and likely others added, but it isn't in stock Android.

On the Pixel XL it flashes only once which i find to be a disappointment. Also on the Nexus 6 , 6P and 5X the notification/time flashed once upon picking up or moving the phone a bit. This is not enabled on the Pixel models for some reason.

But obviously the OP feels different so why bother to post.
This feature does not even work for me at all (but I am able to get the light to pulse). After talking to pixel support for about 30 minutes they did confirm that Ambient display has an engineering problem they are currently working on.

Damn !! I was going nuts trying to figure out why this phone was not acting like my Nexus 6. lol I loved the Moto display then had to end up liking the Nexus 6 version afterwards. Then this Pixel XL only flashing the notice once then never again was aggravating. and of course no good app on the play store to emulate this function with 7.1 lol
well I hope this engineering problem can be fixed with software. :silly:
I've created an app that wakes ambient display when you take the phone out of your pocket or if you have the phone face down and turn it over. The app is in addition to Google's ambient display and does not change your lock screen in anyway.
I added a few other paid features for pulsing at an interval, wave to unlock, and battery percentage display on the ambient display.
I would love to have a few beta testers for the extra features, as it's a work in progress. Message me if you'd like a free code to redeem for the paid features.

"AOE" Notification Light Alternative

This app is a great substitute for OnePlus 6T and no LED. Allows you to get colorful notifications from your favorite apps.

Tips and Tricks: Things that work for me
1. Battery Optimization don't optimize
2. Do not check my lock screen as background. ( helps get customized app color )

Make sure you have the app set to Don't Optimize if you haven't already. I'm not sure why it isn't working for you and not sure what you have for set up.
It is an amazing app!
I'm using this, had figured it out even before this thread.
Turn on 'New Notifications' in Ambient Display and also do not optimise the app.
It works. And it's the coolest alternative to a notification LED.

Mine uses little or no battery at all. Right now I have been up for 13 hours and AOE doesn't even register and I have been getting all my notifications
Use it for 2 days because I thought plus beat not working anymore ( I accidentally turn off lock screen notifications).
AOE working well but lack of feature I want - battery full notification.
Now back to plus beat.

Just installed this and it appears to be working. This is the first app that I see doing what I wanted (a very unobtrusive way of telling if notifications have arrived).
Did not need to to activate "New Notifications" under Ambient Display for it to work. Are you sure it's needed?
I'm not managing to customize the color of the colored stripes according to the app sending a notification. Not that I care too much, on Nexus 6P LED color was mostly irrelevant to me. I just needed a visual cue that something needed my attention if I missed the audio one.

I got it working but it times out after 1 minute. I have my display set to sleep after 1 minute of inactivity but if this follows that rule it's kind of useless for notifications.
Maybe I'm missing a setting?
Edit: found the setting I was missing.

What setting? I also see this behaving strangely. It seems that, as other apps, it gets killed in the background even if one opts not to battery optimize it.
OP behaves exactly like Apple in this regard: they get to decide how I should use *my* smarphone.

Yeah, I set all that. Results have been inconsistent as far as working after long inactivity is concerned.
I wish OP had thought of baking something similar in their OS, when they decided to take away the LED.

I agree, I wish OnePlus had baked something like this into the stock ROM. My second screenshot doesn't look like it posted for some reason so here it is.
5% battery usage. Not cool. This with "Stable" edge styling, which should be the best for battery.
